Thrilling Performances, Gorgeous Sound.......2002-12-01

I bought this CD just to get 'Deserts' in its full form, but after listening to whole thing, I decided to dump my Boulez version of the other works on this disc, because the performances of 'Arcana', 'Integrales' etc., are superior in every way. The clarity, wit, drive and spaciousness are as good as can be. So buy this, and use the money you would have spent on Boulez or Chailly to check out other challenging music.

"new music" from 75 years ago.......2001-10-01

this is my first introduction to varese, so i can't compare it against the many other recordings available. but i like
what i hear- it's amazing that most of these pieces were composed over 75 years ago.

from the loopy but compelling "offrandes" (settings of surrealest poetry) to the orchestral-industrial riot of
"deserts", this stuff isn't easy listening but has an odd internal logic of horns, precussion and angry strings.

someone commented parts of deserts sounds like a videogame of some sort. i think the inclusion of the tape sounds was a wonderfully brave move and makes the whole piece work; i can't even imagine it without the tapes sounds now.

A Wonderful Collection .......2005-12-17

This is an excellent sampling of the music of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, displaying a wide range of emotion, from the enthusiasm of the first selection, the Festive Overture, to the soaring lyrical beauty of the Romance (track 5), to the poetry of the andante movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 (track 9), to the slow, deep, intensity of the Largo movement of the Piano Trio No. 2 (track 13), very movingly performed by the Stockholm Arts Trio.

At the same time that the various musical selections exhibit Shostakovich's range and diversity, they are nonetheless arranged in such a way that the listener doesn't experience any unpleasant impact from the sudden change in tempo that occurs, for example, when the Romance in track 5 ends, and the very next selection is the highly energetic allegro movement from the Symphony No. 10. Rather, the feeling is one of stimulation and excitement as one moves, from one selection to the next, through the wonderful variety of Shostakovich's compositions.

The quality of the musicianship on every track is first rate, including the selections played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its talented conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The andante movemont of the Piano Concerto No. 2 is a slice of musical heaven, played wonderfully by pianist Michael Houston and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is power, intensity, tenderness, subtlety, and great beauty in the wonderful performances on this very reasonably priced CD. The sound engineering is also first rate, with crystal clear sound and excellent balance of the instruments. For those who want to hear a greater number of selections from this composer, Naxos has now released the two-CD "The Very Best of Shostakovitch."

Amongst the "Best of" or "Greatest Hits of" classical music CD's that I have, this is one of the best. Highly recommended.

Traditional & Modern, Russian & Global........2003-03-21

This CD opens a door for me to explore the huge music treasure of Shostakovich. I love every piece of music on this CD. "The Gadfly" film score suit is especially beautiful and performed by first-class musicians in National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. There is too little, this is the only problem with this CD to me.

Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

Superb.......2002-01-10

All too infrequently can one find a superb performance of classical work that is equally well recorded. This disk is one of them. Gee's treatment of Resphigi's airs is wonderful, as is the playing. This ensemble should get much more exposure.

It's really too bad Resphigi didn't apply his rich, more modern touch to more baroque pieces than these and those few Bach works he transcribed. A throughly enjoyable cd worthy of the most revealing audio equipment.

Find this if you can.......2000-06-03

It is a shame this disc is no longer available through Amazon, because it is superb. Also, the current picture of the cd cover used by Amazon is not the correct cover. I was only familiar with Respighi's Roman triptych until I stumbled upon this cd. "The Birds" is lovely music, melodic and peaceful and the "Ancient Airs and Dances" is equally pleasing. The Australian Chamber Orchestra sounds world class here, and the sound quality is excellent. Again, it is a mystery why so many quality recordings like this are not available. Note to Omega Records: Please bring this one back.

Pity for the music.......2001-04-24

The booklet describes Markevitch as a genius and this composition is something we've waited for for years and we've to be sorry never heard it before. I'm not so sure.

In the eighties, while I was a musical student, I heard the first performance of this piece in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw and played by his excellent chamber group: the Schonberg Ensemble. Then, I was totally overwhelmed by this music and I wanted to learn the score by heart.

Today, after much more studying, I find this music not so satisfying anymore. Possible the performance doesn't help, the singing is not first rate and that's one thing the music needs, but I couldn't find the new things again I thought this music had.

I dislike categorizing music - sounds like this and that, seems to be so and so - but for me this is rundown Prokofiev with a Hindemith sauce.

Busy writing for all the instruments in all but one part; I find the first movement the most likeable, the most telling, perhaps the place where you can hear what an extraordinary talent Markevitch was.

The soloists of the Arnhem 'A Bridge Too Far' Philharmonic (what's in a name - over here they are called Het Gelders Orkest but that doesn't sell) is - except the singing - very convincing.
