If ever a hip-hop outfit could be classified as a one-hit wonder, it's Audio Two. MC Milk (cousin to MC Lyte, who covered Audio Two's hit on Seven & Seven) and DJ Gizmo produced one of the most name-checked rap attacks ever--"Top Billin'"--and it still holds up as a classic B-boy jam. Unfortunately, what follows is strictly doo-doo. The rhymes are instantly repetitive, while the beats are thinned-out drum-machine tracks and James Brown samples. Even with Stetsasonic's Daddy-O stepping to the boards on a couple of tracks, there's no juice here. If you're looking for the hit, try Hip-Hop Classics, Volume One, where it's at least surrounded by some other good tracks. --Todd Levin

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

What more can I say?!?!?!??!?!?!.......2007-05-24

I had to put a review on this one. I grew up listening to these kats and still like them today. No this isn't a classic album compared to some of era that it came from and the other artists that were around (KRS, Rakim, Big daddy kane, etc). But it is still a fun album with decent beats adn some ok lyrics. Now we all know that Milk is Mc lyte's cousin. So I pose this question. Knowing that this is not a superior album, would these kats have made it without MC lyte's help? I would probably say no. But I am glad lyte did get them in the game for the brief time period they had. My favorite joint on the album is definitely top billin'.

A Classic From Hip-Hop's "Golden Age".......2007-01-23

Although this is by NO means a great collection, it IS a very accurate representation of pre-gangsta, pre-superstar hip-hop. Most acts from this "golden-age" period of rap (1986-1991) name-checked Audio Two either in print or sound. What really sold me on this group were the videos; I can remember one Saturday night NOT going out with friends just to see the debut of "I Don't Care" on 'Yo! MTV Raps'. Back when a VW Jetta was considered "bling"! So, although it won't be remembered like Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions..."( what CD will?), this is still a
good example of the period, and, for all you "haters"--both of Audio Two's albums are listed at EIGHTY DOLLARS apiece in the 4th Edition of Goldmine's Record Album Price Guide.

One song on here Top Billing is considered a classic the rest of the album is really boreing.

I had this tape when it came out. There's definitely some worthwhile songs on here (I Like Cherries, I Don't Care and I always liked Hickeys On My Neck)and it is damn entertaining but it is NOT a classic. In fact, when you consider what else came out the same year as this (PE It Takes A Nation Of Millions, BDP By All Means Necessary, NWA Straight Outta Compton), this sounds pre-historic. Audio Two had their own sound. But it was lyrically very lightweight in comparison to what other people were doing. Sort of like a better, not-quite-as-wholesome version of Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince. I hadn't thought of this album in years till I saw it on here.

For the 1988 B-Boy era.... THIS IS A CLASSIC !! For those of you that were not around or into hip hop then, this is what it was all about. "TOP BILLIN'" IS CLASSIC THAT SET STANDARDS OF THAT TIME. Milk D & Gizmo (even thou u might think the names are corny ) were one of the dopest duo of their days. These guys put the foundation there for today's artist to do their things. " I Don't Care " ( the song )..... influenced their 2nd album titled .. I DON'T CARE (THE ALBUM). First Priority Music ( Audio 2, MC LYTE , POSITIVE K , ALLIANCE, BARSHA, MICHIE MEE, SOULSHOCK... and i could go on ) was HIP HOP in their day. LONG LIVE AUDIO TWO !!!!! and EVERYBODY go get any of the artist listed above.... THEY DOPE CLASSICS !!!! ..... And if anyone EVER find out what happened to AUDIO TWO "First Dead Indian" which was supposed to be released 1992-1993 .... LET A BROTHER KNOW !!!! ( or lets just find First Priority's Music CEO - Nat Robinson & demand a release ) ....... holla

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
