4 out of 5 stars This group brought me back to rap! Back in the day........2004-10-09

My album is titled U.T.F.O. HITS,same sequence. U.T.F.O saved me with hip-hop in the early 80's. See,I was into rap but was drifting away because rappers like Melle Mel and Run-DMC wasn't movin' me anymore then Brooklyn's U.T.F.O. came out with "Roxanne,Roxanne". The wordplay was confusing in the beginning,I wouldn't give 'em a chance, then a high school classmate told me to try again,so I bought the "Hangin' Out"/"Roxanne,Roxanne" 12" single and throughout the years,I wore out that 12".

This is a great collection of hits here, span by 4 albums (the 5th album BAG IT AND BONE IT songs are not listed here). 20 selections separated by quotes by famous rappers/DJ's in U.T.F.O.'s favor and great mama's boy tunes. "Ya Cold Wanna Be With Me",the 12" version of "Spilt Personality","Leader Of The Pack",Bite It","The Ride",the infamous scratching record ever "Pick Up The Pace" is here (listen to the end and you'll know what I mean),of course "Roxanne 2x","Fairytale Lover" and "Wanna Rock" are all the worthy. MIXMASTER ICE's solo rap My Cut's Correct" could have replaced "Bits And Pieces" and "Battle Of The Sexes" would have been more sexual than "Masterbaby","We Work Hard" or "Kangol And Doc" would have been the good last song of the disc instead of a tired unreleased "Lollipop" duet with THE REAL ROXANNE (that duet should have been happened).

Overall,it's great to hear these tunes all on one disc. Missing a chosen few,it's still good to hear the old school. Again.

Although this album contains classic joints, what happened to their first release, "Beats and Rhymes"? There will never be a rap group to construct a phenomenom such as U.T.F.O. did. Roxanne Roxanne spawn over 15 different "answer records"! Unbelievable. Well, That's how hip-hop was back in the day. In it's purest form. Not for the money. For the skills.

4 out of 5 stars U.T.F.O.......2001-09-25

Any old school fan of hip-hop will appreciate the collection of classics on this album. The memories those songs bought back are unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Takes me back.......2007-01-22

I don't know if this album is as good as I think it is but in elementary school this was great. On a side note, I was upset to hear that Cool C is sitting on death row.

5 out of 5 stars UTFO - The True Meaning of Hip Hop.......2003-02-24

This album is one of my all-time favorites. If you are a fan of old school hip hop, I recommend you to purchase this album. This album also tells you what hip hop is really all about. Hip hop of today is all about the money which hip hop in the history was all about having fun. The hip hop artists of yesterday have put more meaning to their songs which hip hop artists of today just put out anything to make money. This album contains rhymes laced with simple beats which less sampling was involved.

I also have the vinyl version of this album. My mother have bought this album for my birthday when I first turned into a teenager. I still enjoy this album until this day. My favorite tracks of this album are: "Leader of the Pack," "Beats & Rhymes," the big hit UTFO is very famous for which is "Roxanne Roxanne," "Bite It," "The Real Roxanne" which features Roxanne, which she disses UTFO, and "Callin Her A Crab (Roxanne Part 2)" which is a song answers to "The Real Roxanne" which UTFO disses back on Roxanne. This album is an archive for your collection for the true hip hop fans! Go ahead and cop this album.

5 out of 5 stars Good example of Golden age rap.......2002-09-18

UTFO hit high schoolers and young adults full force with "Roxanne Roxanne" in 1984, with it's simple beats and amusing story. If you were in junior high, high school or a freshman or sophomore in college in 1984 who was into Black music, you'll remember this. Classic, innocent pre-gangster rap filled with sprase beats, amusing rhymes, and excellent delivery. Kangol Kid, Dr. Ice, the Educated Rapper, and Mixmaster Ice made an excellent debut (remember how the teenybopper girls swooned over "Fairytale Lover?"). Sadly, UTFO and rap music itself would take the low road lyrically as time went on.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2002-06-27

I remember listening to this album when I was 10, and I am still mesmerized by it 15 yrs later. One of those albums that stays with you. So many song styles to match any mood.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for all rap fans.......2002-02-09

I got this on vinyl for my 6th grade graduation and am glad it's finally out in the digital format. Roxanne, Roxanne started a craze in 1985 that would lead to several disses and reply tracks - Real Roxanne, Roxanne Shante, Sparky D, etc...

If you're a fan of hip hop, you really should own this album. This is classic old school. Highlights include: Leader of the Pack, Beats and Rhymes, Hanging Out and the afore mentioned Roxanne, Roxanne. The only way you will be disappointed in this album is if you hate old school.

4 out of 5 stars Not a band jam from the summer of 86.......2002-09-18

I remember this from the summer of 1986. Pretty popular among the teeenagers at the time, but was overshadowed by Run DMC's "Raising Hell." This is almost as good as the first UTFO CD. Funny stories in "Split Personality" and "Bad Luck Barry". "Kangol and Doc" contains some really nice harmony as well as syncopated raps. The Educated Rapper is missing from this one, but his absence is not really felt. Overall, good old school rap that is sadly forgotten today.

4 out of 5 stars Successful follow up to their self-titled debut.......2002-02-09

While not as good as their debut album or anywhere near as popular, this piece contains some very good raps. Check out Split Personality, Bad Luck Barry, and Just Watch. If you're looking at UTFO, get their debut album first and if you like that pick this one up. Good stuff.

        3 out of 5 stars A Gem From '87 {3.5 Stars}.......2006-12-04

This is one of those albums where I knew exactly what I was doing when I heard it. It was '87 (I was around 10 or 11) and I was on my way home from baseball practice when my neighbor and friend, Duane (14), called me over to his porch and turned it on. He played about three tracks and I ws hooked. Here it is 19 years later and I think this set holds up well. You simply can't deny the funky go-go swing of "Mo' Bass" and I think everyone knows that "Ya Cold Wanna Be With Me" is undeniably a classic. There are a few fillers like "Burning Bed", "Master-Baby" (which features Full Force on the vocals), and the hilarious "Ask Yo Mama" that also make for a pretty decent listen.

As far as flaws, there are a couple. This album contains stinkers like "Lethal" (which features Anthrax), The Ride, and S.W.A.T. (Get Down). Those songs don't really hold up well and they're kind of corny. Even back then they were skip material for this listener. And quite a few of the Full Force productions left a lot to be desired.

Lethal is an album that did what a lot of rap albums didn't do back in '87 -- try something different. Sure, this wasn't the same candy coated, fluffy UTFO from the previous releases, but the changes worked on this album. Rap was beginning to move toward more tangible topics and UTFO followed the trend. It didn't hurt them on this release, but it would prove to be a bad move on their next two releases. I recommend getting this if you want the to hear UTFO's last album before they fell off. They simply don't make 'em like this anymore.

Standout Tracks: Burning Bed, Mo' Bass, Ask Yo Mama, and Ya Cold Wanna Be With Me (My Favorite)

4 out of 5 stars Top Ten Rap Album of All Time.......2003-06-24

...All tracks were produced by Full Force who added some slick R&B beats which was fresh for 1987 in the world of rap. This album predates New Jack Swing era etc. UTFO member EMD had just completed a rehab program and was a welcome addition back. (Skeezer Pleezer was an awful album prioor to Lethal which EMD did not participate in). Lethal is hard rap with a pop edge. It makes for an easy listen especially for new hip hop fans looking for old school records. It is in my top ten rap albums released from 1983 - 1991. After purchasing some 1500 rap casettes from 83 to 91 I feel somewhat of an authority on the old school. I still love this album.

1 out of 5 stars They dropped the ball on this one.......2002-02-09

After two excellent albums, UTFO put out this piece of tripe. The only thing that would remind you of their ealier stuff is Diss. On everything else they started experimenting with their sound. Now normally I'm a big fan of acts moving beyond their traditional boundaries and exploring new musical routes, but UTFO blew this one big time. It's absolutely horrendous.

Where did this talented artist go? Roxanne rapped just right. Ladies, especially, if you buy this CD for 'Go Down But Don't Bite It' alone, you're in for a bargain -- it gets down! The whole album has great personality, with Influx being a kickin' duet with a male rapper, but Roxanne holds her tough feminine own on all other tracks. You've got to hear 'Go Down But Don't Bite It.' Roxanne rox. Now the question is, where did she go?
