"ANTICIPATION": CARLY SIMON'S QUIET STORM.......2006-12-08
Carly Simon's second album, "Anticipation" was released in the same year as her phenomenal debut, "Carly Simon", and helped win her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of that year, 1971. I was ten years old at the time and quite oblivious of her, but not for long...
By the time I was twelve, in 1973, I was already hooked on her "No Secrets" album when one Sunday evening my family was at the home of some family friends and in the 8-track player was a various-artists-hits-sort-of-thing and then suddenly there was THAT VOICE! A-ha! She had other things of which I had not been aware and the love affair was really on! So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen...
"Anticipation" is a quiet storm. It has rock-and-roll punch and pop verve subtley mixed into its folkiness. It's basically stripped-down power comes from the intimacy shared between Carly and a few core fellow musicians who had been touring as her band in 1971. There are no "studio musicians" in sight (or hearing!). Her "songs of the road", as it were, lend themselves well to this intimacy. It can't help but be that the listener feels that intimacy and the unpretentious power of her songs...
"Anticipation" - the title smash and perennial favorite
"Legend In Your Own Time" - another hit and just a really great song about the lonliness and emptiness of fame
"Our First Day Together" - a haunting song of two people on separate wavelengths
"The Girl You Think You See" - Carly at her not-so-coy, sexy best!
"Summer's Coming Around Again" - airy and bright, light jazzy summer song
"Share The End" - apocalyptic and, yes, somewhat frightening
"The Garden" - bucolic rebirth of love, nice juxtoposition with previous track
"Three Days" - song of longing for a fellow musician taken to different parts of the world
"Julie Through The Glass" - sweet little song for the birth of a new baby
"I've Got To Have You" - Carly's take on Kris Kristofferson 's song of raw emotion and sexual desire
Carly Simon's second album, "Anticipation", gathers its strength from its firmly being rooted in acoustic simplicity (which still sounds fresh and untrendy and) which allows an uncluttered effect with which to showcase a set of expertly crafted songs.
Carly's sound becomes more focused on her sophomore album.......2005-05-02
Anticipation (1971.) Carly Simon's second album.
Through the course of the seventies, a number of singer-songwriter type musicians would be come wildly popular - male and female alike. One of the most popular female musicians of this era was Carly Simon. She had the ability to write excellent songs and melodies, and managed to create a sound all her own which was universally appealing. Hell, she was even married to James Taylor for a period of time! It's only proper that she gained so much respect as a musical artist back in her day. She released her first full-length album, which was self-titled, early in 1971. Later in 1971, she released her sophomore effort, Anticipation. Read on for my review.
Carly Simon's debut, in my opinon, lacked focus and direction (but it was still a good album.) With the Anticipation album, Simon begins to truly find her sound as a singer-songwriter. The first album featured a lot of experimentation with different sounds/genres, and that isn't the case here. Most of the songs here stick to a general formula, and ultimately that makes this the more focused, balanced release of her two LPs from 1971. The obvious hit here is the title track, which has become one of her biggest hits, and a definitive pop classic - and the fact that it got heavy rotation in Heinz ketchup commericals a few years back only adds to its popularity. On the first few Carly Simon releases, each album had ONE BIG HIT - no more, no less. Interesting. There were also a few minor hits from each album, and one of the minor hits on the Anticipation LP was the classic Hero In Your Own Mind. The lyrics in this song are great, and no one else could possibly deliver them the way she does. Also not to be overlooked is the cover of Kris Kristofferson's classic I've Got To Have You. Believe it or not, I may actually prefer this version of the song over Kristofferson's original (but I won't deny that I'm a bit prejudiced there, being that I'm quite the Carly Simon fan.) Overall, this album stands as an excellent release, and it was a prelude to Carly's massive pop success that was right around the corner.
Unfortunately, Carly Simon's catalogue was only released on CD once, and those old CDs seem to be going out of print. She is one of the finest musical artists of all time, and it's insulting that her catalogue's availability is so dismal. If any record company executives are reading this - rerelease her catalogue! And while you're at it, remastered sound and bonus tracks and/or twofer albums would be nice.
Carly Simon's sophomore album, despite not being as popular as the albums that would immediately follow, is really nothing less in the quality department. If you're a fan of her work and you want to go beyond her big hits, her self-titled debut and sophomore LP are just waiting to be rediscovered. If you're a new fan you'll probably be better off starting with a compilation of sorts, but any tried and true fan should add these underrated gems to their collection.
TALENT CRYSTALLIZED INTO THUNDERING CINEMA.......2000-11-22
Between Les McCann, Weather Report, Yes and Spirit's 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus, it was a strange favorite amongst the bunch in 1972. Carly had grabbed ears a year earlier on AM radio with "That's the Way I ALways Heard It Should Be" with her self-titled debut, but the album was all over the place, an imperfect mixture of East Coast folk and oddball country. But someone focused her many talents by the next year when "Anticipation" arrived with its shiny cover and odd dozen batch of beguiling songs, and not a dud amongst them. The production was even more stelllar than the first album, and the whole thing seemed infused with a cinematic grandness (and not grandiosity) that made the whole things SOUND and FEEL bigger than life.
Even the hard rock kids wanted to hear it.
People have described the songs better before me, but the hit title tune has regrettably been spoiled by that ketchup commercial in years past. Nevermind. The sun-dappled and shimmering "Summer's Coming Round Again" is worth the price of the CD itself, and little else in the folk-country canon has been more EROTIC than "(If I Have Known You Only) Three Days." Feeling ennui and lacking that zest for life? Spin "(Come into) The Garden" and be transported to Nirvana instantly.
Last but not least was the maturing fledgling's cover version of Kris Kristofferson's "I've Got to Have You." Ooooooooooh! This is still a scorcher! Carly comes off as the 50 Foot Woman in the best way imaginable, and the production gives voice to sexuality and angst rarely heard in folk or country.
If any album from this period so effectively captured a dance with the Passions, it was "Anticipation", and time has not spoiled its great power as a pop accomplishment.
And this is where we parted ways, but I will always say Thank You.
A Terrific Early Album By Carly Simon!.......2000-08-22
Carly Simon straddled the world between folk and pop music in the early 1970s, and forged herself a place in the pantheon of very successful singers like Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, and a number of others like Carol King who were on the pop charts and in the folk clubs earlier in their career. This was her first big album in terms of success, and had the smash hit "Anticipation" on the album pushing it up the charts. Yet there are also a number of other interesting, provocative, and beautiful selections here, including "Legend In Your Own Time", a song obviously about her then-beau and soon to be husband James Taylor, whose professionally educated parents (his father was a physician) strongly disapproved of his non-academic and quite unprofessional choice of careers. My personal favorite here is "The Garden", which never got any air-time, but is a moving, intimate word picture of a song with a lovely melody, evocative lyrics, and an absoluutely haunting vocal. "Anticipation" was one of her first autobiographical confessional albums, and it gives us an interesting vantage point with which to understand her better. This is a great early album by an artist who is often under-appreciated. This is one I heartily recommend. Enjoy
A quietly moving folk-rock masterpiece.......2000-05-12
In retrospect, Carly Simon's second album showed so much songwriting prowess that the future likes of "You're So Vain," "The Right Thing to Do," and "Let the River Run" should have been easy to see coming. In this gentle, flowing acoustic set Simon's always-impressive writing, as well as her remarkable voice, is in absolute top form.
"Anticipation" and "Legend in Your Own Time" were strong enough to become and remain radio staples, but these songs only scratch the surface of the depth of material here. "Our First Day Together" and "The Garden" are stark and beautiful ballads on a stylistic par with early Joni Mitchell. "Three Days" and the playful, near-Beatlesque "The Girl You Think You See" were definitely missed opportunities for singles, ditto for a stunning cover of Kris Kristofferson's "I've Got to Have You," which features the album's only electric guitar.
"Share the End" is a bit unusual, with its apocalyptic lyric and bizarre banshee wails...it's one of the rare moments in Simon's career that's hard to figure. Elsewhere, the drop-dead gorgeous, Bossa Nova-ish "Summer's Coming Around Again" (not to be confused with "Coming Around Again," Carly's theme for the 80's film "Heartburn") is a revelation, and the lovely "Julie Through the Glass" is a touching ode to a newborn baby.
Some of Carly Simon's other albums are better known and may feature more charted singles, but "Anticipation" stands up as a strong artistic statement that gave ample indication of the distinguished career that lay ahead.

"The Definitive Recording".......2004-04-02
Having finally listened to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of this masterpiece, my verdict's in and clear: the London Cast Recording is the definitive version.
The voices of the London Cast are, to a man (and woman) far superior -- this is most obvious when listening to the Quartet who open the show, and act as the chorus. The American artists, while excellent, simply can't compare to the power, range and tone of the Brits.
The arrangements are gorgeous, the choral work astounding, and the version of "The Miller's Son" found here will floor you. Not only the best recording of this particular show, but possibly the best recording of any Sondheim show available on CD -- Sweeney Todd is the only other contender, for my money.
The Orginal Cast Recording is great for a historical value. The British Cast is what you listen to when you want to hear the best show you'll never have the privilege of seeing. It's ruined me. But I'm not complaining.
Sondheim's Greatest.......2003-07-10
I'm of the mind that A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (and SWEENEY TODD) are Sondheim's two greatest works. Why? Because they drip with intelligence and exist entirely within the world of the music. NIGHT MUSIC is propelled by the steady pulse of 3/4, creating the impression that none of the characters would ever come to the realization that they are merely parts being acted and presented on stage--it happens in its own little universe. It's so yummy...
Having said that, I conclude that the perfect cast album could only be completed with the physical presences of Desiree Armfelt and Fredrik Egerman and the rest of the gang. It seems that, when approaching these personalities, actors and actresses treat the music as the music and not as a phase of the dialogue--they don't attack the parts with the brand of boldness and self-importance that each of these characters possesses. The London cast album suffers from such problems. None of the performers have the arrogant voices needed (unfortunately, only a couple have achieved voices somewhat-worthy of the score). Henrik cannot hit the high notes (he goes into falsetto); Charlotte is too shaky to be sufficiently biting; Fredrik seems too feminine; the Count--goofy instead of condescending--seems molded from Sesame Street. The quintet features voices too uneducated and careful. Still, Anne is cutely bubbly (even in voice), Petra is a fine belter, and Hermione Gingold as Mme. Armfelt really makes the listener savor every consonant in her speech. It is an excellent archive of Sondheim's greatest. I would recommend this over the New York cast simply because Jean Simmons creates the closest Desiree I could ever imagine.
Not comparable to the broadway recording.......2002-09-03
The performances are adequate, in some cases skillful, but from the opening note of the show (which the chorus member, in a misguided attempt at humor, aborts in order to insert a racous throat-clearing), this recording lacks the taste and dignity of its Broadway counterpart. I do not recommend this recording.
A wonderful CD release.......2002-02-15
I, ofcourse like so many other reviewers of the same cd, own both the London and original Broadway cast albums, and frankly the London recording does laps around the original. First- I will admit Jean Simmons is not the ideal Desiree, but what she lacks in beauty and glamour makes up for Glyniss Jhon's creaking melodies. There is no song on this recording that is worse then the original, and very few actors ( ofcourse, who could top the original Fredrick, definately including this one). Anne is supurb. Her voice is extremely beautiful, and makes up for the corny fluffieness of the original Anne, and her expression in such songs as " A Weekend In The Country" is simply hillariously funny. This Charlotte is also devistatingly wonderful, with her delicious voice, although you can't realy balance the two Charlottes out (the other from the original), as they play the charector with much difference. This Petra is also stunning, especially in "The Miller's Son," which is recomended in all of these reviews. And what a great operetta Quintet, along with Hermoine gingold's wonderful aged performance. All the male parts are also met to the very top, especially Henrick.
A few of my favorite songs on this album is the wonderfully light and fast paced, elegant little romp of "A Weekend In The Country," and "The Glamorous Life" (which has always been my favorite song from the production, with a much better Fredricka then the origianl).
In conclusion, this recording should certainly be bought by "A Little Night Music" fans, and especially Stephen Sondheim,in the words of another reviewer, who's lyrics are the real star,
a beautiful recording.......2001-12-19
After proving to producers that she could handle performing the role of Desiree on the National Tour, Jean Simmons was asked to come to London to debut with the show at the Adelphi Theatre. Running for a little over 400 performances the show also featured Hermione Gingold reprising her role of Madame Armfeldt.
Ms Simmons is quite affecting as the flighty and insecure Desiree who feels she is ready to pursue romance after years of broken promises and false hopes.
Gingold, now qute comfortable and honed in her role; performs the comical and contemplative "Liasons" wonderfully.
Stephen Sondheim's most complex and multi-faceted score is given a grand treatment here. Almost certainly this is Sondheim's most interesting and most beguiling score which runs the entire gamut of emotions.
A must for all true musical theater fans.

its a damn good cd but will someone sell me it already????
ANTICIPATION...YES!!!!!!... WORTH THE WAIT...NOPE.......1999-03-11
MAAAAN... Actually I give the album ABOUT four stars. When 11-5 came out it was straight knockin the whole first album I thought was TIGHT same wid the second. And everybody was talkin bout TAYDATAY finna come out wid a solo. People couldnt wait, but when it had came out, I was really disapointed. Sure TAYDATAY could flow (tight) and cuttybang and a few songs were knockin but the overall album wasnt as good in comparasent wid the other two 11-5 albums.I just wasnt feelin the beats in this one...But TAYDATAY is just one of those artists you just have to go check out for yourself cuz he is on of the tightest in the bay!!!! so go check it out and support your bay area rap....YOU SUCKA @SS SELL OUTS!!!
Best of the Bay.......1998-10-03
When you think of the top Rappers from the Bay Area, E-40, Too Short and Digital Underground always come to mind. Even in the Bay Area, people are sleepin on this joint and they shouldn't. Taydatay (of the group 11-5) is one of the best lyricist to come out of the Bay for quite some time now. So if you can get a hold of any 11-5 records off of Dogday records do it now, they have 2 cds already out, and they are off the hook (the song Garcia Vegas has been an undergound hit since it dropped a few years ago). Anyways the few of us who follow him have been waiting for him to go solo. Anticipation is a good album, not great but good and won't letdown any true fan. With tracks like Cutty Bang, Tay flexes his flow. The down side is he seems to come alot stronger on tracks with faster beats and I also think he has way to many guest artists on the album with him. But overall it's a good buy. PEace

This Anticipation is Malicious!.......2001-12-09
This has to be one of the hottest breakbeat compilations that you can get your hands on! It has 13 bangin' trax that will have you rollin' from start to finish. Four of the DJ's on this disc are from my area, South Louisiana, who really know funky breakz. Let me "break" it down.....Track 1 is Floor Killers "Dance Floor Killer" which is a great starter; Track 2 is Diana Fox's "Running On Empty(Infiniti Mix)" this is the best remix of this blow-up song; Track 3 is Astroline's "Close My Eyes(DJ Trashy's Bayou Breakz Mix)" this is another hot female-vocal track with a remix by my boy DJ Trashy; Track 4 is Jinnel's "When I'm With U(Malicious Mike Electro Breakz Mix)" tight female-vocal track; Track 5 is Naimee Coleman's "Love Song(Malicious Mike Electro Mix)" if you dug her remake of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World", then you will love this; Track 6 is Malicious Mike's own "Move Yo Body"; Track 7 is DJ Icey's "One to the..." any track by this guy is smokin'; Track 8 is my boy DJ D-Zam's "Blast Dis" you won't find this one on any other compilation; Track 9 is my boy DJ Oliver Twyst's "Gimme A Break" check his style; Track 10 is my boy DJ Johnny CaGe's "Get Ready to Roll" this slammin track features cool, rap-style chants; Track 11 is another by Oliver Twyst called "Tell Me" great female-vocal track; Track 12 is another by D-Zam entitled "In My Heart" another exclusive by this guy; Finally, Track 13 is Wiley's "Slipstream" a sweet track by this Florida-breakz master. Warning: This CD may rot in your player because you won't want to take it out. I highly recommend checking this one out. I'd rate it 10 stars if I could. If my review was helpful to you, then don't forget to vote. THANKS!
