Solo album with a diverse lineup.......2007-06-09
If you're into heavy metal, you must have heard of Jack Frost; or at least some of the bands he's played in. From his own band Seven Witches to the terribly underrated Bronx Casket Company, he also played with Metalium, Speed, and Savatage, albeit in different capacities. Out in the Cold is his second solo album after 2003's Raise Your Fist to Metal.
The album sees a huge list of guest musicians supporting Jack Frost; in fact, there is a different lineup on pretty much every single song. From hard rock singers like Danger Danger's Ted Poley and XYZ's Terry Ilous on "Wasting Your Luv" and the title track respectively to the more thrashy, heavier pieces such as "Hell or High Water", featuring Watchtower's Alan Tecchio; and "Crucifaxation" with Anthrax' Neil Turbin, Frost certainly opts for a diverse album. Sadly though, the less than steallar production has totally rendered some of these songs unlistenable -- some of the vocal harmonies barely come through and the rhythm section seems way too buried for my tastes. Frost's playing does not differ that much from his past works, but he's certainly played more melodic solos in his previous bands, most notably Seven Witches. This disc features more of his crunchy rhythm work than his searing, in-your-face heavy guitar leads as well as some ballady material like "Passage to the Classical Side".
Of the eleven songs on this disc, three are covers: Foreigner's "Cold As Ice", sung by the great Jeff Martin, features killer keyboard work by Vox Tempus man Eric Ragno; whilst April Wine's "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" is treated to a cool melodic solo. On the 38 Special track "Hold On Loosely", Jack Frost does the lead vocals himself, but honestly, he is not that great a singer in my opinion. That said, the album features a great list of bass players with Symphony X's Mike LePond, Fates Warning's Joey Vera, and WASP's Mike Duda.
Only recommended to die-hard Frost fans. Otherwise, approach at your own risk because Jack Frost has released much better albums. Also, maybe he could a little break from releasing so many albums in so little time, and focus harder on stronger songwriting.

Michael Keaton plays a musician (Jack Frost) about to make the big time who must choose between his career and his family--except an unfortunate car crash kills Jack, and his son is left with only memories and a harmonica that his dad promises, "If you play this, I will always hear you, no matter where I am." Lisa Loeb and Bob Carlisle fulfill the sappy sentimentality with "How" and "Father's Love," respectively. Keaton fronts the bluesy Jack Frost Band for two cuts, "Frosty the Snowman" and the Keaton-penned "Have a Little Faith." Lucinda Williams kicks in with "Can't Let Go" from her acclaimed Car Wheels on a Gravel Road album. Hanson contribute three cuts, including a cover of the Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," previously available on their live video. Trevor Rabin rounds things out with "Frostbite," a piece of instrumental film music. --Rob O'Connor

awsome soundtrack to an awsome movie.......2003-12-26
This soundtrack to the movie Jack Frost is awsome. It has several songs on it that just make you feel great when you listen to them. It has some upbeat ones and some slow ones, I dont think I could pick a favorite because they all sounded awsome. I would reccomend this CD, for everyone and not just for the holidays for anytime.
Great soundtrack from a great movie.......2003-05-12
I thought this movie was really good, corny...but good. Part of what made it so good was the music. My favorites are You Were There, Hey Now Now and the two tunes that Michael Keaton sings. He is a pretty damn good blues singer. I wish he would so some other stuff.
A pretty good, but not exceptional, CD.......2002-01-04
This CD, in my opinion, had some good, solid tunes. Most of the songs from the movie were there, such as "Hey Now Now", the song played when Charlie and his dad (the snowman) sled down the hill away from the bullies. However, one song is missing from the collection. The song played when Charlie builds the snowman (who ends up to be his dad), is, in my view, a very emotional and wonderful song. I was disappointed to find that it was missing from this CD. I even tried to find out the name and author of the song, but I didn't come up with any results. Nonetheless, unless you are dying to hear that song like I am, you should buy this CD. For those of you who enjoyed the movie, it is definitely worth the money.
Great Soundtrack!.......2001-04-11
Some songs in this CD can really make you feel like dancing. My personal favorite song is "Hey Now Now" by Swirl 360. This song was played when the boys were chasing Charlie and the snowman-turned-dad. Other songs by Hanson wasn't bad, either ("Good Lovin'"). I don't remember hearing "How" by Lisa Loeb, but it's still great to listen to this song on soundtrack.
where's the mac?.......2000-08-11
to the record company-where is the most touching song from the whole movie:fleetwood mac's LANDSLIDE? other than that not a bad collection of artists and titles and a phenomenal movie.

Go Between the Churches.......2003-04-28
One of the benefits of the sporadic release schedules enjoyed by a lot of the better artists over the past decade or so is the freedom it gives them to explore alternative paths without having to make the experiment a permanent commitment. Most good musicians have more going on in their heads than what they restrict themselves to in their mainstream releases.
"Jack Frost" was released in 1991, the year after the demise of the first run of the Go-Betweens. The Church, of course, were still in business. My guess is that Grant McLennan jumped at the chance to explore more electric and more psychedelic approaches than Robert Forster (or the fans for that matter) would have countenanced in the Go-Bees. And perhaps Steve Kilbey just jumped at the chance to work with a famously prolific songwriter.
A few tracks sound amazingly like something from Howard Devoto's band Luxuria, particularly "Every Hour God Sends" and "Geneva 4 a.m.." It can't be a coincidence--Kilbey must really like Devoto; even his vocal stylings ape him. Classic McLennan surfaces on "Civil War Lament," "Thought that I was Over You," "Providence" and "Trapeze Boy" where Grant introduces us to Mrs. Morgan for the first time. Perhaps the most seamless melding of the musical approaches of Kilbey & McLennan occurs on "Threshold." But surely the most astonishing track is the gorgeously psychedelic "Everything Takes Forever." What a magnificent creation! It makes a fine closer to a really fine album.
Amazon reports this release to be out of print. If you enjoy either Grant McLennan or the Church, this album is an absolute must have. I also recommend it to anyone with a taste for atmospheric jangly pop. Buy it used or find it somehow.

Customer Reviews:
A hot album for Jack Frost.......2005-08-13
On this album, the duo Steve Kilbey and Grant McLennan have matured greatly since their last self titled album, Jack Frost. On their first album, which I loved, they sang their lyrics separately, but on this new album, they interweave their voices so it is almost impossible to tell which singer is which. They have blended their voices well and also added heavier and rich guitar layers to the music. With every listen, the songs on this album get better and better. This disk reminds me of the Re-Formation disk that was made by members of The Church - Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, and Tim Powles. What a great partnership that you can hear on the album.
Good Job for Snow Job.......2001-06-23
If you are reading up on this disc, then I have to assume you are at least a casual fan of The Church and/or The Go-Betweens. Jack Frost is the moniker for the collaboration between Steve Kilbey of The Church and Grant McLennan of The Go-Betweens. Snow Job is their second effort and a fine one at that, much more polished and flowing than their first. That is not to say that Snow Job is commercial sounding. The only cut with commercial single possibility would have been the excellent "Dry Dock" with an outside chance for the quirky, two minute plus "Little Song". Steve and Grant really seem to groove well together throughout the whole album resulting in songwriting, music, and vocals that are quite cantabile for a collaboration. Both play bass, guitar, and keyboards while alternating lead vocals through most songs. The other will sing backing vocals then along with Russell Kilbey. Steve's trademark neo-psychedelic ambiance does pervade Snow Job but, Grant's level-headed storytelling keeps things from drifting off course.
The bottom line: Buy it if you already really dig both Steve and Grant's solo material (or The Church's 1990s material). Jack Frost is like barleywine or Scotch. It can be revolting at first but, rewards greatly once you have completed training on the aural road less traveled.
Steve Kilbey rocks out.......2001-02-22
For diehard fans of The Church (like myself), the side projects of its members are extremely interesting and divergent recordings that, if nothing else, fill in the sometimes lengthy time periods between new Church projects. Of all the members, lead singer/songwriter Steve Kilbey has had the most interesting and varied solo career, but for the most part, nothing he nor any member has recorded can match what The Church produces as a group.
But Jack Frost, one of Kilbey's many side projects, comes very close. Jack Frost is collaboration between Kilbey and Grant McClennan of the Go-Betweens. McClennan's influence may account in part for their strong pop sense and solid songwriting, which is very evident on SNOW JOB.
What's surprising about this record is how much it rocks! Unlike the majority of Church recordings, Kilbey really lets loose here on "Jack Frost Blues," "Shakedown" and "Dry Dock." Traditional - some might say simplistic - rock songs, but carried out with gusto. It's hard to underestimate the influence of drummer Tim Powles, who would later join The Church and contribute to their updated, ambient-type sound in the late 1990s. He is perhaps the most powerful drummer Kilbey has recorded with, and pushes Jack Frost sonically.
But most of the album is the sort of "jangle pop" that early Church records, and nearly all of the Go-Betweens' back catalog, are known for. Kilbey and McClennan make an excellent duo - at times, it's hard to distinguish one voice from the other. The result is the sound of a tight new band that is truly the sum of its parts, without carrying the baggage of the members' "day jobs." Very catchy melodies and superb musicianship throughout.
If you search through the cut-out bins, you may find the first self-titled Jack Frost record, which is also excellent, if not more Church-sounding. But SNOW JOB is a highly recommended disc that tends to surprise those who know, or think they know, all about The Church.
an alternative to alternative.......2000-07-02
In a time where alternative is overplayed, it is nice to find some music no one has heard of and no radio stations play. I spend most of my time looking for such music, and this fits the bill. I would like to find their first self titled album. I don't find anything fancy about the tunes, and that is what makes them enjoyable. If you like The Church, you will like this.
Strong, solid set of songs.......1999-09-08
A friend and fellow Church fan bought this cd for me. At first listen I thought it strange, but with each subsequent listen I've gained further appreciation for the blend of styles it represents. It's easy to tell what Kilbey brings to the table and which parts come from McLennan, and while they're stylistically different, they mesh well together and share a common thread.
My favorite song is Cousin/Angel. I'd like to locate the previous recording released by Jack Frost, and I look forward to further collaboration from these two gents.

Starts off good and hard, but softens up.......2002-07-23
Frostie is a veteran of the scene, so anything he touches should be gold...i really dig the way the disc starts, if you like techstep style jungle youll love the fact that he mixes 2 of the biggest choons to come out of the ram records camp ("hush hush" by shimon and titan by andy c, shimon, and ant miles a.k.a. ram trilogy) within the first 3 tracks...from there it gets a little jazzier and lighter (with a few exceptions, i.e. "messiah"), but it stays good and pretty fast throughout...i think its a good disc for someone who likes clean, crisp, jungle, but if you have been listening to jungle for awhile youll probably notice that a lot of these tracks are older and may even seem kind of dated, due to the fact that, a lot of artists in the genre (high contrast and dj marky come to mind immediately) are changing jungle and taking it in new directions and reaching new heights..id recommend the disc though, especially if,like me, you are a junglist stuck in america where there is very very little opportunity to see top jungle talent like jumpin jack frost
Good selection, average mixing skill.......2001-07-31
If you wan't my honest opinion there haven't been too many drum & bass mix cds worth listening too-- many bootlegs and live broadcasts are much better... but I may be a little biased, because I'm hardcore into this music scene. If you are new to drum & bass it gives a decent slice of the selection going around in the UK maybe 8 months ago. If you like this check out John B (for some more jazzy flavor), DJ Patife & DJ Marky (Brazilian flavor). DJ Marky IMHO is the best to come out of the scene (ironically not even from the UK) in a LOOONG time. I would keep your eyes peeled for a new Volume of this Fine Tuning series with him starring. (or maybe Marcus Intalex-- he's dope too)
Drum and Bass savior?.......2001-07-24
Well people are talking about this album being the fresh new sound of where drum and bass is going. Is it? I would say that thre is a whole lot of where we have been in where we are going. That is not a bad thing. You see when a music evolves it usually loses some of it's fans. Drum and bass has always been known for it's gritty style, and hard edge.
This album shows you what we Americans never really get to hear. The Brit's point of view of this genre. Super gritty, super hard, and pretty fast. But it all works together to produce a peak and valley type of 'dnb' album we rarly get. Wonderful and scary, sweet and spicy. The best in a long while.
