This is the complete Brownsville Station collection. It reminds of the songs you forgot they did from the 70's.

I would love to review this CD, but it has been 30 days since I ordered it, and I still have not received the CD.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S BROWNSVILLE STATION!.......2005-07-15

Motley WHO??? The title trash track of this boot-stompin' compilation was a number two juvey delinquent call to arms when i was in high school and has been ever since. If that's all ya know about CUB KODA and his grinnin' gang of Detroit Rock City brats, then fer cryin' out loud, whattya waitin' on??? Slap it on, tune in, and shut up!!! Ya got yer rocked up reggae tune (LET YOUR YEAH BE YEAH, as JIMMY CLIFF never envisioned it). Ya got yer killer glam-slam (GARY GLITTER's punk anthem I'M THE LEADER OF THE GANG). Ya even got THE MARTIAN BOOGIE, a spaced out JUNIOR PARKER-meets-THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER mind-meld that's been a DR. DEMENTO SHOW fave for light years. Plus, you also get THE great lost killer rockin' roll single of the seventies, LADY PUT THE LIGHT ON ME. Acclaimed liner note king/music journalist CUB KODA does the honors here, chronicling the band's slow rise and free fall; if only he'd penned an entire book about them before he went to that "great greasy gig in the sky"! Many, many albums have made the proud claim, "MADE LOUD TO PLAY LOUD!"...only BROWNSVILLE truly meant it.

4 out of 5 stars Only missing a couple of things but still great!!!.......2005-06-07

This CD gets my vote for must-have status alone for its inclusion of the shoulda-been-bigger single "Lady (Put the Light on Me)" from what I consider their absolute best album, 1977's "Brownsville Station" on the Private Stock label (so far unavailable on CD)...if they'd included a couple more titlaes from that album and at least "Never Say Die" from their "Air Special" album, their last one released on Epic in '79 as Brownsville...this would be perfect! Overall, a great introduction to one of Detroit's coolest and most flat-out rock & roll bands in the 70s. And yes, I agree with the concensus...
their version of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" puts Motley Crue's version to shame from the very first note. There was so much more to this band than that tune, and you can bet Cub Koda is rockin' them right down to their shoes up in rock & roll heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Cub Koda Could Really Rock!!!( Rest In Peace Man).......2005-06-06

This album contains the Classic Rock song "Smokin' In The Boy's Room" which a lot of my peers did back in High School.Back then they used to smoke filter cigarettes. Sadly these days the filter cigarettes have now been replaced with a more potent addictive drug. Anyway back to the album. The guitarist and singer of this band Cub Koda was a Wild Man of Rock who was always great to watch in action as he jumped from one place to another on stage. They don't make them like him anymore. This album ROCKS so play it LOUD and forget about the neighbours!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2005-08-12

This collections gives you 7 of the 8 tracks from the 1985 Power Station album - at that rate, just buy that album. Moreover, it only features one track from the much better 1996 Power Station album 'Living in Fear'.
I'd only recommend getting this if you are really keen on getting the other tracks not found on either album.
But basically you might as well get the first album to get most the songs found here and get Living in Fear to get all the ones missing from here.

3 out of 5 stars I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to..........2004-12-26

First off, let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the original two Power Station albums (The Power Station and the sadly overlooked Living In Fear). Andy & John Taylor of Duran Duran put together a side project that really kicked some ass, and proved once and for all that they really could play. It's dance music, but the most rockin' dance music ever recorded. But, the band only recorded two albums, so a compilation is completely unneccesary, especially since the second album didn't feature any hits (despite the fact that in many ways it featured better songs). So, if you just wanted a collection of hits by this band, then pick up the first album. But this compilation throws in a couple of rare tracks, which would really only appeal to fans of the band. But if you already own the first two albums, then you are spending money really on three songs.

Regardless, if you are fan of Duran Duran or The Power Station, then just wait for the new deluxe edition of the first album. It will feature at least two of the rare tracks from this album (don't know if the live track will be included, but that wouldn't be much of a loss, since it features Michael Des Barres on vocals, because Robert Palmer refused to tour with the band), along with a bonus dvd. And if you're a casual fan of eighties music, you are much better off buying a compilation cd of eighties songs that feature Some Like It Hot or Bang A Gong...since those are the only two songs many people care about anyway.

This really only would appeal to someone who was told that The Power Station were great, and are curious. Other than that, don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars Good material, but it just isn't enough.......2004-01-27

In 1985, the five members of Duran Duran temporarily separated into two side-project bands. One of these bands was the Power Station, which featured the legendary Robert Palmer on lead vocals. Although the band didn't score a good deal of hits, they were still an excellent band. In addition to their self-titled album in 1985, the band reunited in 1996 for a reunion album, Living In Fear. Recently, the band got a best of CD in the Ten Best Series. How does it measure up? Read on and find out.

PROS:
-If you're a casual fan and you're just seeking the band's biggest hit, Some Like It Hot, it's here for your listening pleasure.
-There are two excellent cover songs here as well - a cover of the Beatles classic Taxman, and T. Rex's Get It On (Bang A Gong.)
-A number of underrated masterpieces can be found here.
-It's budget-priced.
-Unlike other CDs in the Ten Best series, this one has rare and unreleased recordings.

CONS:
-WAY TOO MUCH emphasis on the first album, not enough on the second one.
-The band only had TWO albums, so a best of album for them is extremely unnecessary. If they wanted to make people by the rare tracks on a best of, why not just make a compilation of rarites and such?
-It doesn't fill the CD to the eighty minute limit.

OVERALL:
GET THE ALBUMS INSTEAD. This compilation might be enough for you if you're a very casual fan, but that's about it. Hits compilations are often scattershot, and this one is even worse since it's a BPC (budget-priced compilation.) I can't stress it enough - buy the albums!

4 out of 5 stars The best of (but only from the 1st album) !.......2003-12-18

The Power Station was a side project for Duran Duran's John & Andy Taylor. Together with the late Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, they formed this supergroup in 1985 and recorded an album which featured 2 US top 10 hits ("Some like it hot" + T-Rex's "Get it on").
Palmer left the Power Station shortly after to go on solo but in 1996, he re-formed the band for a second album "Living in fear" which failed to chart.
This low-budget collection concentrates on the 1st album. The only track from "Living in fear" included here is the cover of George Harrison's "Taxman".
3 tracks make the CD worth purchasing : a previously unreleased live version of "Dancing in the street" and dub versions of "Communication" and "Heat is on".

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-01-07

There are some gems on this CD. Most of the music is nondescript when you listen to it; it is much more suited to being the background music of a TV show, of course. In other words, it's not like regular music you get on a regular commercial band's CD. In my opinion, the best songs are the Main Titles, in particular the 5th season.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed it is........2007-01-05

With his compositions Franke shows how much he understands the B5 universe
of JMS. A true epic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-05

This is a wonderful sound track. Chirstopher Franke catches the mood of the series with his music and it sounds even better when you listen to a recording, away from the episodes. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars This really is the Best of Babylon 5!.......2001-11-04

Thank you to Christopher Franke and Sonic Images for The Best of Babylon 5! Although I have most of these tracks on other B5 CD's, I really enjoyed this one because of the consistently great music. I would rank this one as excellent, along with my other two favorites, Babylon 5 Volume 2, "Messages from Earth" and the episodic CD, "Sleeping in Light." Two tracks deserve special mention: Track 2 is (I believe) a reworking of music from the album Babylon 5 Volume 1. With the "Battle of the Line" music in the background, Chris Franke adds new ideas to enhance the musical experience. The other notable track is the last one, Track 18 "Bonus Theme." This is a fabulous new track, which I understand was written for the (unfortunately never released) Babylon 5 CD-Rom game. This is six minutes of great music, that cannot be mistaken for anything other than "Babylon 5-style" music. It's a thrilling piece, which alone makes me glad I bought the CD. Let's hope we get the same quality offering with the "Legend of the Rangers" movie soundtrack, which I hope will be released next year.

3 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi pre-history.......2007-05-07

Before becoming a platinum-selling megastar, Jon Bon Jovi was just plain old John Bongiovi, a janitor at his uncle's recording studio The Power Station. While working at the studio (and before forming the band Bon Jovi), he recorded several songs that have been collected on this album.

There are at least half a dozen different versions of this material, released by as many different (but always small) record labels. I have to assume that the songs were never intended for release, otherwise Jon Bon Jovi himself would have issued the album, and you know that would have been a decent seller for a major label. The various releases contain anywhere from 10 to 20 songs. If you're going to track this album down, you might as well try for the one with the most songs.

As to the actual music collected here, it's not bad at all, though it falls well short of what we heard on the debut Bon Jovi album. These songs take a more straightforward pop approach than the (relatively) hard rocking Bon Jovi material. It's almost like Bon Jovi was doing his best Springsteen impression, which oddly enough is pretty close to Bon Jovi's current sound. It makes you wonder just how much of Bon Jovi's early (and massively successful) hard rock sound came from people like Richie Sambora, Aldo Nova, and Desmond Child.

The Power Station Years (or the Best of John Bongiovi, or whatever it may be called) is an interesting bit of Bon Jovi history, and one that all serious Bon Jovi fans should check out. You probably won't find yourself reaching for this disc very often, but it's always interesting to see an artist's humble beginnings, and even more so for a star of Jon Bon Jovi's status.

1 out of 5 stars First attempt by John Bongiovi.......2006-04-23

I owed a demo prior to him releasing this years later. I couldn't get the label I worked for to jump in and sign him based on lack of voice qualities and poor arrangements at that time in the 80's. The only workable song is "open your heart" he could have saved/rearranged it and stuck it into the band he quickly created after Runaway. This is a very raw attempt to break into the industry. It lacked then and even worse now. Good thing he created a band rather than solo, this album/CD solo is NOT worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars more than a bargain.......2001-11-06

for the bon jovi fan or just a fan of john's, this cd is a must. it captures all the essential ingredients of a bon jovi cd with the individuality of john's persona. you can tell the pure quality in the music. my favorites were MORE THAN WE BARGAINED FOR and DON'T LEAVE ME TONIGHT. these sum up the cd and justify john's talent pre-bon jovi. a good starter cd for bon jovi fans.

4 out of 5 stars Years of rock and roll.......2001-03-31

John Bongiovi's album the Powerstation years lets us in on his music long before the band BONJOVI. The songs in a way are similar to the usuall bonjovi music but these songs also have there scent of individuality of Johns music. My favourite songs on the album include Dont leave me tonight,Hollywood dreams and in johns case these dreams came true with his success in the movie industry. I also liked More than we bargined for and talking in your sleep. This is a must album for those who are fans of Bonjovi or just John.
