Album Description
Lee Michaels rose from the San Francisco scene in the late 1960s with a sound that embodied gospel, rock and pop. Wielding an organ like a lead guitar, Michaels crossed all musical boundaries. He embarked on a solo career in 1968 that saw six A&M albums over the next four years, all of which brimmed with funk, soul and rock. In 1971, Michaels penned a song that he thought to be a throwaway, "Do You Know What I Mean." The song, which tells the posttraumatic tale of losing a girlfriend to a buddy, quickly took on a life of its own, landing in the Top 10 and becoming a rock staple. This collection culls together tracks from all six albums, offering a more complete look at this versatile artist.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-05-27
Lots of good vintage Lee Michaels cuts on this one, but cutting the "Tell Me How Do You Feel" medley in half was unforgivable. It's not as if Frosty's solo was the greatest thing since Buddy Rich - editing that down would have been perfectly okay. But LM's entrance after the solo, and the finale of "My Friends", was arguably the best moment on the entire "Lee Michaels" LP.
Very disappointing.
Fantastic Musician & Vocalist.......2007-04-25
I am one of the lucky few who got to see and hear Lee Michaels (and Frosty) perform live at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium back in the 1960's. And even to this day, after having been at live performances by Genesis, The Cars, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Creedance Clearwater Revival, .38 Special, Clover, The Youngbloods, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joe Cocker, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airman, Canned Heat, Buffalo Springfield, Ike & Tina Turner, The Righteous Brothers, Wang Chung, The Who, B.B. King, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jethro Tull and more...Lee Michaels & Frosty STILL stand out as one of the most cell-exploding live acts ever! It was absolutely impossible to feel down at a Lee Michaels & Frosty concert! The dynamic, envigorating and mind blowing combination of Lee Michaels voice (with it's incredible range), his musicianship on his Hammond Organ and Frosty's perfectly meshed drum playing blended into one of the all-time best evenings of my life (no kidding!) And not only were they great live, they sound almost as good on their recordings. Buy this CD, get to know these magnificent performers. You'll become a Lee Michaels & Frosty fan forever.
A Rare Treat.......2006-11-23
I've taken a moment to read many of the reviews of Lee Michaels' various albums. He is absolutely an amazing player of the Hammond B-3 with its Lesley speakers; and has a voice that can get way up there.
The album omitted one of my favorite songs ever, "Basic Knowledge" from "Recital". --I guess that gives me motivation to go get that album/CD!
Good but not complete.......2005-11-26
I bought this CD & was extremely disappointed to hear the Medley of "Tell Me How Do You Feel" "Don't Want No Woman" & "My Friends" was cut short. Frosty does a fantastic drum solo & then Lee does some amazing stuff on the B-3 to close out the song & it's all gone! I had the original recording of this from the Lee Michaels album but the cassette broke & I haven't been able to find it anywhere. The rest of the album is fantastic but I sure wish they hadn't cut what I feel was some of Lee's best organ playing.
Outstanding.......2005-03-28
I have a rating system for all music I purchase and this CD received the highest overall rating from me.It is an outstanding early to mid 70's rock recording featuring Lee Michaels on keyboard with fantastic vocals! While his earlier material is better than the older it holds up well enough for 5 stars. My only compaint is me.......why did I not know this artist growing up in the musical 70's era?Buy,Buy,Buy. You won't be disappointed.

I'm with everyone - This is a perfect GBV mixer.......2007-04-11
There's a book about Guided by Voices - 'Twenty-One Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll'. The Filmaker Richard Linklater says 'my list of favorite GBV songs runs to about 150 songs'. This collection 'The Best of Guided by Voices' comes in with about 30. Its a very good start.
If you are GBV collector maniacs, you will already have everything on this cd (in box sets, and twice on vinyl). If you are new to GBV you can either start here, and see if you can stop, or just jump to the box set Hardcore UFO's (where this disc is included).
What am I talking about? I'm talking about G.B.V.: the song delivery mechanism for songwriting junkie Robert Pollard that functioned in absolute obscurity for at least a decade, before exciting non-Ohio native music fans with a fully formed catalog of hundreds of songs during the 1990's. These guys were making rock and roll so long ago that the vogue was to sing with a fake british accent - I'm not sure but I think Pollard even pre-dates REO speedwagon in this. If you are getting the impression that GBV had their heyday back when Chicago had their third album out, you might be missing the point. GBV's last four or five albums are as good as any of their formers, and all five are represented in Human Amusements at Hourly Rates. If rock reviews were more succinct, it wouldn't influence anyone's buying decisions anyway, but sometimes a group is so good, you just have to do the wrong thing, and talk about them a lot, instead of listening to their music. GBV is just such a group, and if you are new to their rather massive catalog, I envy you. Try 'Human Amusements', if you like it, there's plenty more where that came from (A small town somewhere near Dayton Ohio).
Probably the Greatest Best Of, of all time.......2007-01-03
Yes folks, you have your Beatles Double Disc greatest, but GBV is a band that has produced many albams which the majority believes has brilliant songs and then some not so brilliant songs muddled in.
This takes their Best, and has to be considered The Greatest Greastest Hits album in Rock n Roll history, in my mind of course.
So many other groups have those albums that you need to listen to the entire album to get it's full impact, and the hits album doesn't measure up.
This is that once in a lifetime wierd exception.
My recomendations would be to get this album, Earthquake Glue, and Half Smiles of the Decomposed, and you've got a hefty amount of incredible GBV material.
Don't listen to this album if you want to start a band........2006-08-18
After listening to this and many other GBV songs, I have come to the conclusion, what is the use in starting a band, it will never be done better than these guys. This band truly takes it to 11 in their music, melodies and band name. The more you listen, the more you will love them. Tractor Rape Chain is the best example of Lo-Fi rock music and should be in a time capsule for future generations.
GUIDED BY VOICES.......2006-07-25
IT'S MY FIRST TIME DOING THIS BUT I HAVE BOUGHT 2 CD'S BY GUIDED BY VOICES -EARTHQUAKE GLUE AND THE BEST OF.THEY GROW ON YOU AND GET BETTER EACH TIME LISTENING TO THEM.NEVER HEARD OF THESE GUYS. HEARD THEM ON THE RADIO AND HAD TO INVESTIGATE.AL STEWART STILL IS THE MAN.
One Big Fat Piece of Genius.......2006-03-05
Guided by Voices are one of the best bands I ever heard because they can create epics out of concentrated, 2 minute blasts. Just gorgeous.

Best Of Classical.......2007-04-11
I don't know much about classical music and have just started listening to it. I like this CD because it contained a variety of pieces and composers that I was somewhat familiar with. I think this will help me in future choices.
A Very Good (and cheap!) Box Set For Beginners........2002-10-09
This is a great box set for beginners (especially considering the price). The sound quality is excellent (unlike many other [inexpensive] classical CDs). Also, a wide variety of classical favorites are covered in this set.
It could use some notes about each piece in the CD booklet though.

The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954.......2005-04-17
Bill Haley usually gets his due for helping to kick off the rock & roll era with "Rock Around the Clock" in 1954, but as it happens, Haley had been cutting solid rock sides several years before that. Haley covered Jackie Brenston's epochal "Rocket '88" within a few months of its 1951 release with his Western swing outfit, Bill Haley & the Saddlemen, and after that it didn't take long for Haley and his bandmates to make with the boogie and add some strong proto-rockabilly material to their set. The result was a string of regional hits for the Essex label that eventually led to Haley's signing to Decca Records and the recording of the song that became both his greatest triumph and the millstone he could never escape. "The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954" is hardly the first album to skim the cream off Haley's pre-Decca hits (pick up "Rock the Joint" for a more complete picture of this era), but it's more concise and better sounding than most collections of Haley's Essex sides, and leaves his lukewarm hillbilly material by the wayside in favor of straight-ahead rock & roll (though Billy Williamson's blazing steel guitar solos point to the band's country roots). These recordings prove that Haley's showy style had fully evolved long before "Rock Around the Clock" made him an international star, and if anything this material makes for a more satisfying listen than the vast majority of Haley compilations on the market, with "Rock the Joint," "Real Rock Drive," and "Crazy Man, Crazy" standing alongside his very finest work. "The Best of Bill Haley and His Comets" is a well-considered tribute to the formative years of one of rock's more neglected pioneers, and it's plenty of fun to boot.
rockin, swingin' rhythm and blues........2005-01-21
An amazing collection of Haley's pre rock around the clock recordings. It's a swingin' collection. BIll Haley is the true king of rock. the best songs on this cd are rocket 88 and rock the joint. this is the original rock. Bill began rock and roll by blending country and western and rhythm and blues together. it's a great cd for the hard core bill haley fan!
Before "Rock Around the Clock," Haley went crazy man, crazy.......2004-06-24
Before Bill Haley began rocking around the clock tonight, he released singles with his group the Saddlemen. So what to call this new brand of music? Western swing mixed with polka? A fusion of country-western and 40's R&B set to a steady beat? Country boogie? Call it what you will, but this collection consists of A and B-sides of his singles on Holiday and later Essex Records, which veers closely to his later chart-toppers.
Clearly, Haley saw this R&B style music as his fugure, given by his own cover of Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88", which is considered by some to be the first R&R song and not "Rock Around the Clock," and Jimmy Preston's #6 R&B hit, "Rock This Joint," both included here. The latter definitely predicts his later style, with some piercing steel guitar reflecting the country roots, but it was also the song Alan Freed played over and over and yelling "rock and roll, everybody!" on the King of the Moondogs show.
Songs like "Green Tree Boogie" would have rhythms repeated in their later material as well as stuff done by Little Richard but more raucously. The steel guitar and loudly pronounced bass enhances the beat. The brisk "Dance With A Dolly" sounds like early Louis Jordan material, especially with the piano boogie solo in the middle, with a kind of nursery rhyme-like beat.
One day, Bill Haley asked some kids how they liked his music. One responded, "crazy man, crazy," which Haley wrote down on a napkin. This standout song which reached #12 on the charts in 1953, was the first blip he made before he exploded with "Rock Around The Clock." With its "go go go everybody" shouts in the middle, accompanied by the Comets' trademark country guitar, how could this miss? I heard this song via a compilation LP my father bought back in the 50's. Another song that was on that compilation was "Farewell, So Long, Goodbye," with its rude-noise bari-sax note after each time the chorus was sung. Or did the Comets have some really strong chili before the recording session?
Chanting harmony choruses were prevalent in a cover of Faye Adams' R&B hit "I'll Be True" and "Live It Up" with its opening tribal drums and frat choruses.
Another observation is how nursery rhymes were recycled with early rock and roll arrangements and additional lyrics. Again, this seems to echo what Louis Jordan's nursery rhyme medley, "School Days (When We Were Kids)" earlier. Here, Haley gives the R&R treatment to "Pat-A-Cake" as in Pat a cake, pat a cake, baker's man, and "Ten Little Indians," which despite its as stance at being condescending to Native Americans today, does put on a thrilling beat. "Stop Beatin' Round The Mulberry Bush" also borrows from a nursery rhyme, and it was just before this song came out that Haley and company ditched the cowboy outfits, donned the suits and ties, and became the Comets in 1952.
"Fractured" was based on slang kids were using then, as in "this music fractures me," showing the Haley was attentive of the times and his audience, the pop market with its white teenagers. And his R&R cover of the 40's standard "Chattanooga Choo Choo" shows him reaching back to the big band days, with the female backing chorus reminding the era of the original.
There's no denying Haley brought out a new brand of music to white audiences, and helped changed the face of popular music,--and I really dig this stuff-- but what must be understood is that his fame came at the expense of many black artists unable to reach white audiences due to the recording industry.
The headwaters of rock 'n' roll.......2004-04-30
For many artists, the public's perception of their career begins with a watershed moment. For Haley, that moment was the 1954 recording of "Rock Around the Clock," magnified by the song's re-appearance in the 1955 film "Blackboard Jungle." But also like many artists, Haley's career - nor what he was really famous for - was born in that seemingly single moment of inspiration. This collection shows off the years before the public's light bulb switched on, as Haley and His Comets transitioned from a western swing band to one of the (if not "the") earliest of rock 'n' roll acts.
Throughout the 40s Haley had made his way as a western swing artist. But when he signed with Essex Records in the early 50s, he began to cross-pollinate his country influences with beat-oriented R&B. The seeds of 1954's "Rock Around the Clock" can be heard loud and clear across the sixteen tracks anthologized here. What's particularly fine about these sides is their transitional nature - they're not country or R&B, nor are they yet fully transformed into rock 'n' roll. They're a hybrid in the making with slap bass and fine stick/rim work on the drums, but also featuring pedal steel guitar. There are danceable backbeats, but they often swing towards a western two-step rather than the more freestyle rhythms heard on the race chart. The sax and guitar clearly begin to define rock 'n' roll conventions, borrowing pieces from R&B, country and blues and fusing them into something entirely new. Danny Cedrone's iconic 6-string solo from "Rock Around the Clock," for example, was lifted from his own performance on 1952's "Rock the Joint." Imagine what that sounded like on Alan Freed's Cleveland radio show at the time!
Haley was unfairly reduced to a footnote for many years, obscured by the large shadows of Berry, Presley and others. What these tracks show ever so clearly is that he was fusing country and R&B into rock 'n' roll before the other "founders" were on the scene. So too was he writing prototypical rock 'n' roll songs, leaning on teen slang for "Crazy, Man, Crazy" and delving into his own imagination for "Rockin' Chair on the Moon."
This is a most welcome release in celebration of Rock 'n' Roll's 50th anniversary!

More than a one-hit wonder.......2004-12-10
Although Fontella Bass has a new lease of popularity thanks to the likes of the Cinematic Orchestra, she is best known for the 1965 hit, Rescue Me, her first solo single for Chess Records subsidiary label Checker. It takes pride of place in this 16 track compilation, which collects the best of her output for Chess, but there is far more to her than that.
Rescued includes one previously unreleased 1968 track (Joy Of Love), one released only in France (Free At Last) and several singles not previously included on album, and there are indications that Checker were slightly caught out by the runaway success of Rescue Me and weren't sure quite what to do with her, as some of the subsequent singles sound like blatant attempts to capitalize on her hit by sounding as much like it as possible. Some of her best material, conversely, was buried on B-sides, for example The Soul Of The Man (the B-side of Rescue Me) and Don't Jump, a duet with Bobby McClure which became a big favourite despite being consigned to the other side of flop single You're Gonna Miss Me.
The biggest omission is the only A-side not to be included, Safe And Sound, an obvious attempt at using a formula to recreate the success of Rescue Me. It can be found on Ace's compilation Where The Girls Are Vol. 3.
Her only album for the label was The New Look, rushed together to cash in on Rescue Me and was largely made up contemporary covers, quickly learned from the records. However, Lester Bowie, best known for his work with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, who played trumpet on the album sessions, went on to marry Fontella, and they worked productively together when they quit the US for Paris around 1968-1969. Two selections from that LP are included here: Since I Fell For You and Oh No Not My Baby.
Fontella Bass grew up singing and playing piano, as her mother Martha was a major gospel star and all her family were deeply into gospel music. Fontella started out professionally as a piano player in Little Milton Campbell Junior's band in 1961 and became their female vocalist one night by chance when Milton failed to show up and their musical director Oliver Sain got her on stage in his place. She and Bobby McClure later sang in the Oliver Sain Revue, which brought them to the attention of Leonard Chess. Her first couple of singles for the label where duets with Bobby McClure, including the hit single Don't Mess Up A Good Thing.
Perhaps Chess/Checker didn't know quite what they had but is all here in these grooves to be enjoyed today

Very tight cd.......2001-02-09
This is a great cd to play at a party, or for just kickin it. Everlasting Bass is the best song on here(it's the reason I bought it), but the other songs I like on here are This Is For The Homies, Say It Loud, U Don't Hear Me Tho, Oldie But Goodie, Get Ready To Roll, Nobody Disses Me, and DJs & MCs. This is truly a great cd, so check it out!
Bring Back Da Memories.......2000-03-12
This is a must have album. The beats and arrangements glorify the 80's rap scene like no other. I was in college during Rodney O's hay day. Song's like "everlasting bass", "nobody disses me" bring back memories of when rap was fun and fresh. My friends and I used to chill out in are dorm room and jam to these songs all night long. Buy this and you wont be disappointed.

So Underrated!.......2005-05-18
I guess you can't email other reviewers and I had to send a word out to zzjeep about seeing Lee Michaels in Hawaii 1969-70. I was there too! You cannot believe the sound that those two performers on the HIC stage made. Frosty abusing that poor drum set (with his hands!) and Lee wailing at and on and with the organ. Whew!
However, I'm buying the "live" album - to replace the well-worn vinyl copy.
Good keyboards at a good bargain!.......2002-02-03
I picked this up on a whim when I noticed it was less than $10. Lee Michaels was predominantly a keyboard player/songwriter for A&M Records from the late sixties until the early seventies. His popularity declined and he then switched labels. This bargain releases compiles the better cuts from his 6 A&M albums from 1968-72. The disk highlights his stature as one of the better blue-eyed soul singers of his era. The music is a mixture of rock, pop, psychedelic, soul, and blues. Michaels also contributed guitar to a number of the cuts. Highlights include "Do You Know What I Mean" and a cover of "Can I Get A Witness" his two biggest hits. Other favorites include the funky "Heighty Hi", "Hold On To Freedom" and his take on "Stormy Monday" which spotlights his organ playing skills. The lyrics are par for this era with diatribes against the war such as on the songs "War" and "Thumbs". An interesting aspect of his music is that he often incorporated the harpsichord into his songs. His organ playing was impressive enough to be asked to jam at sessions with Jimi Hendrix. In comparing this set with Rhino's "Collection" another anthology of Michaels' work from this period one finds that this set is cheaper and contains more music. This set however has no liner notes. The length of this disk while longer than the Rhino disk is still only about 68 minutes. Two of my favorites "Murder In My Heart For The Judge" and "Keep The Circle Turning" appear on the Rhino set but not on this set. They could have easily fit on this set. "Forty Reasons" another of my favorites appears on neither set. However 68 minutes of music for under $10 is hard to beat and it provides a good introduction to Lee Michaels' unique brand of psychedelic soul.
Lee & Frosty - underrated to a crime!!.......2001-09-10
Don't know how you feel about 60's music and some of the pioneers, but this man (and his hefty drummer) Barry Frost-Smith, personify the California Summer-of-love (and beyond)as well as any of the bands of that era. Don't hold it against him that he scored a couple of top-40 hits ("Heighty Hi" & "Do You Know What I Mean") that are still played today. His soulful vocals set a standard that are inexplicably overlooked in most historical settings; but if "Thumbs" (for example) and the covers "Can I Get A Witness" and "Stormy Monday" don't move you, then you're beyond hope! His live performances were awesome ear-shattering events (saw him in Hawaii in '69 & '70) that mostly overshadowed the headliners! Lee & Frosty make you glad you have a volume control that goes to 10!! Thanks for the music Lee!!
TOTALLY UNIQUE.......2001-04-02
Mostly remembered for his 1971 top 3 hit, "Do you know what I mean," Lee Michaels is underrated and made lots more great music. All his songs are melodic and catchy and his style is unique with the prominent sound of the organ. My favourites on this delightful album include Hello, Carnival Of Life, Sounding The Sleeping, Stormy Monday, Day Of Change, Do You Know What I Mean and Can I Get A Witness? There are a lot of anti-war songs too, reflecting the concerns of the times. Very elegant, sometimes exuberant, rock music of a style that no one else has explored since.
