An excellent Hendrix compilation. All of the famous stuff still played on the radio is on here, as well as lesser-knowns. Definitely get this if a Hendrix fan. 20 tracks, over an hour of music. Great value.

I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!

listening to 'hey joe' for the first time was a major milestone in my decidely short-lived musical career. When I attended the Berklee college of music, I cited this as a huge contributing factor to the genesis of my passion for music and the audio genre. I still listen to this from time to time and and become giddy at the unashamed, unstoppable vision of a very special man. This is considered one of the greatest albums of all time for reason folks. get it. listen to the genius and the pure art.

The Jimi album.......2007-05-15

This recording laid it down for Jimi Hendrix and in his short life in the spotlight, he never recorded a better album. I believe that he might have at least given this a run for the money down the road had he lived, but that's all speculation at this point.
The hits are here and there is surprisingly no filler. Even though it came out during the zenith of the psychedelic craze, it is far less trippy than Electric Ladyland two years later. The focus of this record is thoroughly blues, r'n'b, and rock based. Even Third Stone From The Sun has enough of a point and vibe to not succumb to the obvious psychedelic theme. The additional tracks mostly lifted from Smash Hits are a nice bonus, especially Red House, one of his greatest songs.
This is the definitive Hendrix album and one of the most important rock records because it introduced this phenomenal artist and his shocking and spectacular guitar brilliance which continues to provide inspiration for guitarists today. Without Hedrix, you can write off dozens of famous guitarists to come in his wake who tried to recreate just some of his magic. If there is one necessary Hendrix album (and there are only a few in total), this is it.

I Am Now Experienced. Are You?.......2007-04-13

Today I was going through my dad's old LPs and Are You Experienced caught my eye, before this I had only heard the biggest cover songs(Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire etc.) When I brought it up to him and told him I had never heard it he gave a shocked expression, as our record player no longer works I had to go out and buy the C.D. Afterwards my dad went into a whole story on how he went to see The Experience at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and afterwards he got to shake Mitch Mitchell's hand.( Our last name is Mitchell so that's kinda cool) Some of tthe best guitar riffs i've ever heard are on this album. I also enjoyed the balance of different music styles in the album, Hard Rock( Fire, Manic Depression, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze), Blues( Red House)and Ballads( The Wind Cries Mary). In conclusion I reccomend to anyone who appreciates REAL music not the new fake s*** they put on MTV.

Also reccomended: Band of Gypsys, later work of Hendrix if you don't have the means of finding the album at least download Machine Gun.

Excellent Debut, Excellent Re-issue.......2007-03-12

This album was originally released in 1967, yet its still brimming with raw vitality and brilliance. This edition was released in 1997, and its still a shining example of how to do a re-issue.

First off, the music itself is timeless. Who hasn't heard "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" or "Purple Haze"? Tracks 1-11 represent the breadth of what was the original US LP version of the album. And man, is it great. There's variety galore in this. From the tender approach on "The Wind Cries Mary" to the psychedelic jazz-like excursion of "Third Stone From The Sun," there are plenty of avenues that this album embarks on. This ain't no blues rock plodfest. This is an experience in and of itself.

But wait, there's more!

Tracks 12-17 are the 1997 bonus tracks; some were originally on the UK but not US version of the album, while others stem from other sources. But, unlike some bonus tracks that only sully the content of the album, these go along quite well with the first 11 songs. Certain songs, like "Stone Free," are bursting with energy. Others have a bluesier vibe but its actually rather refreshing to hear that after the mindblowing nature of the album.

And the packaging itself is quite commendable. Long (albeit tremendously sycophantic) liner notes, lyrics and release dates for the songs. Well done!

Is there anything bad? Well, if psychedelic rock isn't your thing, you might not particularly like the album anyway.

Overall, this is a great example of a re-issue. They restore the album, add bonus material that compliments the original work and give us the best liner notes possible. Oh, and the CD itself has a groovy design as well.

A must-have!

Great sound quality.......2007-05-16

The sound quality of Electric Ladyland is great from the BOOM BOOM BOOM at the start of "The Gods Made Love". This album was originally a 2 LP set & has much longer & blusier jams than on Hendrix's first 2 albums. I was glad to see the CD has the original artwork because I recall for a while in the 90's Hendrix's first 3 CDs were issued with different artwork than the originals which I thought was a major crime. I like the title track which was obviously inspired by Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, I wish it was longer. My favorite track was "1983,A Merman I Shall Be",a true psychedelic masterpiece I sort of wished was the album closer.

I voted yes on the review button on the reviews that give this less than 5 stars;it's good to hear what everyone has to say on this classic album. I disagree on anything less than 5 stars,though. Jimi proves to be a guitar God,and the songs themselves have stood the test of time. Eddie Kramer,the engineer,will tell you himself that this album was groundbreaking and phenomenal.As a guitar player,I consider this THE lesson on how to mix it all up. As a fan and listener,it always transports me into the mind,heart and soul of Hendrix. This "aural" painting has very subtle colours and masterful strokes...if you want to get a 5 star CD that bangs all sensibility out of you,go listen to AC/DC's Back In Black.If you want a taste of everything on the banquet table,buy this CD.It's cheap,too.Amazon is giving this one away...
Long live Hendrix!

Not his best - not a masterpiece.......2007-04-12

Ok - most of you can just skip down to the "no" button and trash me before you read on since I'm not bowing down at the altar, but for those of you who do read on, I'll try my best to tell you why it's three stars and not a flat out "But, it's Jimi!" five stars.
First, it is not his best studio album. That would be his first. I would put this after Axis: Bold As Love as well. My biggest gripe with this, as with much of the sixties music, is that it is so dated and trippy sounding that it just wears away at you. Buried beneath stoned lyrics about breathing underwater and psychedelic (yech!) trickery is some brilliant guitar work, it's just a shame that you have to wade through the dopey stuff to get to the nugget below. I'll no doubt piss plenty of folks off, but I don't consider Jimi a particularly great songwriter. He had the riffs, no doubt, but his lyrics tended towards the silly sixties b.s. that I truly can't stand. Still, he did put together some beauties and there are some on this album as well.
The first four songs are solid, mostly because the first track is short and to the point despite not really being much of a song as much as a lot of effects. The soulful Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is sweet and Crosstown Traffic simply rocks, ala Fire and so many of Jimi's most inspired moments when he cuts the crap and just lays down the rock. Voodoo Chile is a slow blues that just simmers like a delicious stew punctuated by Jimi's hummingbird wail that about shatters glass. From there, the next five songs are good, as well, with the only questionable inclusion being Noel's Little Miss Strange. Burning of the Midnight Lamp is very good and the guitar work on Gypsy Eyes and Come On (Let The Good Times Roll) are pure Jimi brilliance.
The biggest problem I have with Electric Ladyland begins afterward, on what used to be the third side of the record. Despite a nice guitar melody on 1983, the lyrics, studio/psychedelic silliness, and the whole dated sixties vibe just kills anything else that is contained on these three tracks, and there are some nice guitar moments at the tail end of Moon, Turn the Tides, just to mention one spot. This whole section is little more than self-indulgence and filler, something left for headphone orgasms and acid trips.
The fourth section of the recording might be the best with the second half of Rainy Day (called Still Raining, Still Dreaming) kicking it off, followed by the final three strong cuts which culminate in one of Jimi's crowning achievements, Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
This is a mixed bag of stuff. I love Jimi Hendrix - at times. But there are reasons I won't just carte blanche this five stars. This album seems to lack direction, as if no one was there to tell him (or no one had the courage) "Hey Jimi...what is that crap?" It was all so groovy and so hip and so trippy, man, that no one bothered to question Jimi's self-indulgence in the peace, love, and grooviness of the times. If you want proof that perhaps even Jimi realized the excesses herein, look at the songs he recorded after this one. Those songs were concise and much more straight ahead lyrically and structurally. There is much to love on this recording but there is also much that I don't care for at all. For this low price, you won't regret the purchase, but I wonder how spectacular this often sprawling document might've been had someone cut away the trippy filler and stuck to the meat.

Jimi at his Best.......2007-04-12

Why bore y'all with long, pseudo music-mag reviews? I'll just throw in my two-cents that this "double album" (originally) is so chock-full of beautiful music, trippin' music, blues, and everything else Jimi could do (which was just about everything).

I miss you, brother. Only a once-in-a-century musician like you could influence the playing style of a bloody bass player like me, and for that I modestly thank you. You've touched lots of lives in your short stay on this planet.

Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Arguably his best work........2007-07-24

Amazing how well this album holds up. If anything it seems more creative and masterful forty years after it was released. When it first came out, this album astonished young and old guitar players alike. We could not comprehend how Hendrix was making the sounds he so effortlessly created. In the USA we did not yet know about the sound of an overdriven Marshall amp and a Univibe effect pedal. It is ironic that Jimi, a professional R&B player with serious chops and road experience, had to go to London to be appreciated as a soloist. On this album he is confident, explorative, poetic and emotionally expressive. The dissipation and excess that mars some tracks on Electric Ladyland had not yet set in. Pure artistry and genius. Mitch Mitchells drum work reminds me of Keith Moon at his best. It is a shame he never worked with the Who after Moon passed. The engineering by Eddie Kramer is masterful and captures both the delicacy and drive of this trio. I suggest you skip over bass player Noel Reddings middling compositon "Shes so Fine". It detracts from the work.

Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04

I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.

The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27

Like Terry Gilliam, Hendrix at his worst was still better than everybody else at their best. Astoundingly, Hendrix secured his place high at the top of the rock guitar pantheon on the strength of just three albums, recorded in rapid succession. Axis: Bold As Love, is the middle child, or perhaps, the redheaded stepchild. It can't touch Are You Experienced? or Electric Ladyland - but it's still pretty darn hot.

Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.

More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.

The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.

Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.

Kowabunga!!.......2007-05-08

When I first heard snatches of "Are You Experienced", Hendrix' first album on Philly's premier, local, underground FM rock station of the time, I couldn't believe that here was a black, American expatriate, living in England, producing what had to be ARCHE-typical California psychedelic hard rock/funk like no other person before or after him! There was a confidence in Hendrix' singing/songwriting and guitar playing that NO ONE has equaled...white, black, hispanic or otherwise, since! Though he played sideman to people like Little Richard and James Brown, he was a better musician than ten of those two put together, though their influence on him was obvious. Here was a man who took three idioms: soul/R&B, rock and psychedelia, and melded them together in a unique consumme that no one has been able to duplicate, though Cream and Arthur Lee's Love came closer than most.

"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".

His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!

In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!

Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....

Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. The French violinist Jon-Luc Ponty broke barriers as a sideman with Frank Zappa and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and with his own critically acclaimed recordings for over four decades. This latest JLP cd surprised me. I think i was expecting another "power house" recording; instead, in my opinion, the Acatama Experience (and i don't care if the title is misspelled) shows JLP's softer side. To be honest, at first i wasn't sure if i liked it because i had listened to mr. ponty rocking the house for so long. but the more i played it, i began to appreciate and love it as much as his previous albums, and i can't stop listening to it now. this latest recording is a must-have for your JLP collection!

I have followed Jean-Luc for over 20 years, and never stops amazing me!
His latest give more feeling and beat than the last few albums. He delivers much better live, but this is one of his best studio albums! He has a top notch band right now on this album, and he has toured with them extensively.

This is a great record, and maybe one of Ponty's best in the last years. Despite the misspelling of the chilean Atacama Desert, it should belong in any Jazz Rock aficionado library. Of course, it's not A Taste for Passion but even so it is an album well worth owning.

Through the years, violinist Jean Luc Ponty (a well recognized musician that doesn't need presentation anymore), has demostrated through his mamoth of finesse recordings, not only his musical inventiveness with recordings that have became cornerstones in the jazz fusion genre, but furthermore, by the high level invited musicians that have contributed to embellish his albums with their habilities and particular emotion every time. Between others, we can find guitarists like Daryl Struemer, George Benson or Scott Henderson, but we must to mention the most revolutionary of all: The maestro Allan Holdsworth, who has colaborated with Jean Luc-Ponty since 1976 in the recording ENIGMATIC OCEAN (One of the cornerstones that I have talked), INDIVIDUAL CHOICE (1982), and now this new Ponty's production named ACATAMA EXPERIENCE (2007). the middle aged man Allan Holdsworth only plays in one song but his powerfull exotic and melodic solos help to create the ambiance for these new and beautifull Ponty's sketches that by the way, after years of recordings abscence, these listen with a more matured sound. This recording is in a traditional Jazz format (more than Fusion) containing all the essential Ponty's elements: The inviting rhythms and the hypnotic melodies, but this time with a kind of an african-brazilian flavor supported by an acoustic piano instead of the sinthesized wall of keyboard sounds that the Ponty's fan know very well. The track "Point Of No Return", offers a different musical view with disonant violin and fluglehorn melodies on top of a rhythm section and a grand piano progression, leaving beside the hard traditional kind of Jazz format just to find the influence figure of the great Miles Davis... Fantastic!

Another new is the 3 track playing of guitarist Philip Catherine, a veteran musician that played with Thjis Van Leer in seventies with the Progressive band FOCUS! So just sit back, relaxe, and enjoy again a great instrumental album with Jean Luc-Ponty and his friends... Good Luck

Pleasing and pleasant album........2007-06-05
Let me say from the outset that I enjoy this album, and it will I'm sure be played much in the future in my household.
He is a wonderful 'jazz' violinist, and as we all know there are very few of them about, and I can't help wondering if record companies are perhaps struggling to find a way to market them to their (and Ponty's) best advantage.
The veteran musician has an enviable technique on the violin, and a wonderfully full and warm tone; and when given reign to do so can swing like the clappers. He has a great harmonic sense, and loves to play.
For the long time listener of Jean-Luc Ponty, "Acatama" or...better "ATACAMA" is the product of a band that has been playing together for at least six years and a culmination of Ponty's entire fusion career.
2001's Life Enigma marked a welcome return to the studio after an eight year drought, but his crack band was utilized sparingly.
Ponty chose to play or program most of the instruments and bring in band members to help in varying degrees as he saw fit; Individual Choice seemed to be the template that he was working from.
In contrast, JLP includes his band much more for The Acatama Experience, and that's a good thing, because some of his best records have resulted from using a road-tested rhythm section. It's the the same touring band he employed sporadically for Life Enigma: William Lecomte on keyboards, Guy Nsangué Akwa on electric bass, Thierry Arpino on drums and Taffa Cissé on percussion.
Another old trick that Jean Luc pulls out of his bag is bringing in guest guitarists for spot duty, and true to his ol' form, only the finest will do. In the past, Ponty has hired luminaries like George Benson and Genesis tour member Daryl Stuermer. This time, he brings in guys who played with him back in the heyday seventies: Belgian/English fusion heavy Philip Catherine and that electric guitar virtuoso's virtuoso known as Allan Holdsworth. The overall approach of tour band + star sessionists and just the overall sound of this record makes it more akin to 1989's consistently good Storytelling.
As if to be starting a globe trotting journey in his home country, the first song of the collection is a modernized version of Bud Powell's sunny bop classic, "Parisian Thoroughfare" complete with a mildly hip-hop beat.The funkiest song is saved for end; "To And Fro", with a nice, syncopated groove provided by Akwa (Ponty's best ever bassist) and Arpino.
There is plenty of full-bodied and melodic violin, coupled with gently swinging and sympathetic backing.
The session has that degree of spark and something special that ignites and inflames the mind and turns this pleasing and pleasant album into something memorable.
It's a very enjoyable listening experience.

The guy was damn ingenious with a guitar, but not half as industrious as the folks who've packaged and repackaged his posthumous material. First Rays of the New Rising Sun, however, is an attractive assortment of "spiritual, very earthy" late recordings that surfaced in the '70s via The Cry of Love, Crash Landing, Rainbow Bridge, and War Heroes. Hendrix appeared to be in transition between flamboyant showman and serious musician personas at the time (meaning his work, had he lived, might have been twice as meritorious and half as fun), and that makes many of these tracks all the more interesting. --Steven Stolder

After guitar god Jimi Hendrix died, he released more albums than he did when he was still alive. Control of Jimi's music fell into the hands of attorneys who saw the opportunity to turn a fast buck, and quickly released this excellant music chopped up into several different albums (Rainbow Bridge, Cry of Love, War Heroes, etc.,etc.). After much litigation and several years, control of Jimi's music was given to Jimi's father and sister. They formed the Experience Hendrix record label and went to work. The first task at hand was to put together First Rays of the New Rising Sun, Jimi's title to the double-album he was putting the finishing touches on when he died. Through interviews with the producer, engineers, and musicians who worked on the project, they finished the album according to Jimi's specifications. The music on the album is sophisticated, energetic, and precise. Hendrix fans will recognize most of these songs. Freedom, Angel, Dolly Dagger, Roomful of Mirrors, Isabella, Hey Baby(New Rising Sun), and the beautiful Drifting are all highlights. Like The Beatles leaving behind the cute mop-top Beatlemania era with Rubber Soul and Revolver, Jimi seemed to be breaking away from the psycadelic wild-man theatrics of his early days, and getting down to the business of creating serious music with a conscious. You will find some of Jimi's best songs, vocals, and guitar playing on the aptly titled First Rays of the New Rising Sun. No Jimi Hendrix fan should be without it.
Cry Of Love.......2007-02-16
Back in the 70's I wore out my vinyl copy of Hendrix's Cry Of Love Album. Songs like, Drifting and My Friend have been floating around in my head for all these years and I had tried to find a copy of CRY Of Love on cd several times with no luck. Well, here it is under a different name and with some additional songs ! These are some of the best cuts Jimi Hendrix ever recorded and the music sounds as good today as it did when I was a kid. Absolutely great stuff.
A must-have. It's as simple as that.......2006-12-20
This is the geniune article, folks: The tapes that Jimi was working on before his untimely death. Seventeen songs, and all but two (Beginnings and Stepping Stone) are must-haves for any serious Hendrix fan. Of course, it's got the lovely, oft-covered ballad Angel, which has quickly become a Hendrix standard and is one of his best songs, perfect lyrics, perfect melody, perfect instrumentation... it's all there. A masterpiece. And it's not even the best song on the disc - I'd go with either the title track or Drifting, a low-key ballad that is one of Hendrix's more underrated. Rockers In From the Storm; Freedom; Izabella and Roomfull of Mirrors are perfectly complimented by the ballads (Night Bird Flying; the aforementioned Angel; Drifting) and the funk songs (Ezy Rider, another favorite; Dolly Dagger). And then there's the hilarious, wah-wah'ed Belly Button Window. Hendrix's last recordings have been repackaged several times, but this is the one to go to - it's probably what Hendrix would've approved of, unlike the Allen Douglass releases. Hendrix's music was taking an interesting turn before his premature death. If you're curious as to how a fourth studio album would've turned out (and really, who isn't?), this should satisfy you.
Wonderful Treasure.......2006-07-17
This is a treasure chest full of early unreleased Jimi. These songs really show the heart and soul of Jimi Hendrix as a thoughtful songwriter. As always, the guitar is wonderful and amazing; but there's something peaceful in even the most scorching of solos on this disc. Enjoy this wonderful collection of songs that illustrates Jimi's command of the blues and how he was able to stay true to it's roots or help it blossom into a rock 'n' roll explosion.
Jimi's Version.......2006-05-13
"In 1994, Hendrix's own handwritten track selection for First Ray surfaced and was reprinted in the french magazine Folk & Rock (November 1994). Surprisingly it was never used when attempts were made to complete the unfinished project in the years that followed. Hendrix only completed a song list for three sides of the double LP, and wasn't sure where to place the track "Night Bird Flying". With a darker-colored pen, he seemed to indicate that it should be the second song on side A. Hendrix's track selection for First Ray of the New Rising Sun was:

Side A: Dolly Dagger, Night Bird Flying, Room Full of Mirrors, Belly Button Window, Freedom.

Side B: Easy Rider, Astro Man, Drifting, Straight Ahead.

Side C: Drifter's Escape, Comin' Down Hard On Me, Beginnings, Cherokee Mist, Angel."

The above and any other quotes in this post are taken from the book, "Black Gold the Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix" by Steven Roby.

The album is refered to above as First Ray instead of First Rays because Jimi at first was going to call it First Ray of the New Rising Sun. Another quote from Black Gold:

"Billy Cox worked on the unfinished album, and recalled the time when Hendrix asked him about the correct wording: "He asked me, 'Is it the first ray, or the rays?' I said, 'I don't know. He said, 'What do you see when you get up in the morning? When you look over the horizon do you see one ray or rays?' I said, 'I'd have to check that out.'

Hendrix would seem to have had a cover for the album in mind too...another quote:

"There is also evidence that Hendrix may have had a cover in mind for the release. On September 17th, 1970, he sketched out various faces to form the shape of a cross, with his own face in the middle. The right arm of the cross had faces of white people, including J.F.K. and Hitler and two women and a baby. On the left arm of the cross was Martin Luther King, Jr., a black woman with a crown, an African woman, and a baby. On the bottom shaft, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Cochise, two women and a baby represented Native Americans. Above Hendrix's head, the top shaft of the cross showed Buddha, Genghis Khan, a Japanese woman, and a Chinese baby, representing the Asian Peoples."

I like this CD and gave it 4/5 stars. But knowing that there are existing track listings by Hendrix out there I tend to wish they had tried to stay closer to the song orders he had chosen (Of course Jimi might have made many changes to those song orders before the album was completed).

Since these days most people can make their own CDs I would probably arrange a version (for my own listening pleasure) to look something like this:

Since the only version of Cherokee Mist I have heard is on the Box Set and has simliar patterns to that of In From The Storm I left it off. I left off My Friend since it was a leftover track from 1968. For those who are into having an instrumental open the album there is a spacey guitar instrumental called The New Rising Sun on the now deleted Hendrix CD compilation Voodoo Soup...I just wasn't sure how to fit it in due to space limitations. Pali Gap is also a track that could have been on the album as it was recorded during the same time period. Of course everyone's version of this album would probably be different (including Jimi's).

I could go on and on about this but I guess the bottom line is I like the music on this album very much I just wish it could have somehow stayed closer to Jimi's vision...

Each song blessed my soul in a different way. There is something on this CD for everyone. Favorites are Faithful, Grateful and for the young(er) people, On Time God.
The Best Gospel CD In Some Time.......2007-03-11
This has to be the best Gospel CD in some time. The landscape has been lacking strong, melodic, traditional and spirit-filled Gospel songs led by a Gospel choir that can take the songs to another level. This CD does just that for me. Hezekiah Walker's releases have been consistent, for the most part. He is always able to deliver a message in both upbeat songs as well as the slower, inspirational tunes.

LIFT HIM UP--As the lead single, this uptempo praise joint is amazing. It has a very unique, vaudeville, showtune kind of feel to it. The lyrics are repetitive and it does last a little too long, but it's a fun song nevertheless and a good song to kick off the CD. A

DO YOU KNOW JESUS--After the Gospel workout that was Lift Him Up, this slow, inspirational ballad is the perfect song for an altar call. I know a few choirs here in Chicago that have sung this song as an altar call because it speaks to the notion of truly knowing Jesus personally and then showing that relationship. It starts off understated and low and then goes into the stratosphere towards the end. Do you know Jesus? A

IT'S MORE THAN THAT--A nice breather after the tearjerker or the wake-up call of the previous song, this uptempo has a nice, laidback groove with repetitive lyrics but with a message that speaks to the fact that a relationship with God is more than just the "things" He can provide. The choral harmony in this song is good. A-

HOLD OUT-One of those traditional Gospel songs that has a lot of power and umph and it's a solid song that really makes you want to "hold out" until He comes. It's not as strong as the previous song, but it's still a good uplifter nevertheless. A-

NO DEFEAT--One of my favorite songs on the CD--this is one of those powerful songs with a message. It speaks to the fact that with God on one's side, one cannot be defeated because "since God is the greatest power, we cannot be defeated" as the song says. I like the vamps and the key changes in the song. A+

JEHOVAH REIGNS--I like the message of this song. It is traditional. It sounds like something from the late 90s, but it doesn't have enough energy and pizzaz to take it to the next level and following the previous 5 songs, it is not as powerful and edgy. I usually skip over it, and the lead singer is not the strongest. B+

HE'S ABLE--Another traditional song with a pretty strong lead. The message is what the song states that God is more than able to see you through. It doesn't have that same feeling and vibe as the others, so I usually skip over it. It's better than Jehovah Reighns. B+

CELEBRATE--Now moreso than any other song on the CD, this one is one that will put people into an exubernt praise mode. It does as the title says which is to celebrate the name of Jesus. The lyrics are simple, but it's a powerful song. The choir handles this well. I listen to this a lot. A+

FAITHFUL IS OUR GOD--This has to be my second favorite song on the CD. It's currently a single. It has that traditional meets 2005 kind of song. It speaks to the faithful, holy nature of God. The powerful choir's vocals coupled with the key settings of the song and the musical arrangments make this a basic masterpiece. A+

ON TYME GOD--This is a nice song even though it's kind of unique and weird. With some of the things or lyrics the choir says, you can tell that they're traditional, but they're trying to be contemporary. B+

GRATEFUL--This is the 2nd ballad/Inspirational song on the CD. This is worth the CD itself. It talks about the power of God and just being grateful. See, you have to listen to the rest of the songs that talk about the nature of God, the power of God and just having a relationship with Him. When you transcend beyond just appreciating God, you can then be grateful for all that He is about. In the bridge, the choir just repeats "grateful, grateful, grateful." They also modulate while doing it. After that, you just go there. It reminds me of slavery at times and how to just be grateful to God where He's brought African-Americans and many other things.

This is a stellar Gospel CD, and I see why it's received the acclaim it has and the Stellar Award for best traditional Gospel CD.

I think this album is not as good as hez first album. His first album is i,ll make it back in 86. thats the real hezekiah. Now dont get me wrong lift him up is hot,but 2 of the songs u people heard on his live recording at radio city 2 is from his 1st recording i,ll make it. Now hez is my no 1 gospel choir, but i really hope he brings back his sound from the old days.
And dont worry he is still the man in gospel and God still loves him no matter what people say about him.

LIFT HIM UP! ENOUGH SAID.......2006-07-11
I List Hezekiah Walker , Donnie McClurckin and Micah Stampley as gospel vocalist with the most range and you hear how much range he has at the end of lift him up, he is almost singing soprano. This album takes awhile to get used to.There is a Mix between live songs and studio songs, different from all of the rest of Walkers' albums.My favorite song is lift him up, and im pretty much satisfied with the album because it lifts me up when i listen to it.I was blessed to see Hezekiah Walker live and he sung lift him up, ive played in my car ever since and its hard not to shout off of it.I must say I like the live recordings better because i love live instruments .The one thing i must say is that Hezekiah Walker does not dissapoint and his music is about ministry and not about all the technical stuff that musicians and song writers worry about. Hez carries an anointing nobody else carries, he is a pastor first and a singer second, his albums are not about lyrics there about ministry and lifting up jesus.so if you are someone that cares more about lyrics than anointing you might want to try someone else whose anointing is not as powerful as Hezekiah Walker.

Some of Jimi Hendrix's live radio broadcasts for the BBC were released by Rykodisc in 1988 on Radio One, but The BBC Sessions, remastered and fleshed out into a two-disc completist's dream, is perhaps the best document of how the Experience sounded live in 1967. From blues stomps such as Muddy Waters's "Catfish Blues" to surly R&B vamps such as the three takes of Curtis Knight's "Driving South," Hendrix explores his roots with hardscrabble passion. Meanwhile, he pushes the psychedelic-pop spectrum with surprisingly rich versions of studio-tweaked numbers like "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp." There's plenty of slop--a stumbling jam with Stevie Wonder on "I Was Made to Love Her"--and lots of horsing around and awkward interview fragments. But in its balance of pop form, interstellar improv, R&B pedigree, and sheer charm, The BBC Sessions is about as accurate and honest a snapshot of the charismatic, still-pimply 24-year-old phenom as you're likely to hear. --James Rotondi

Jimi Hendrix first became a hit in Europe before he was noticed in the U.S. The BBC radio in England had a policy of airing a specific amount of live music broadcasts. This gave Jimi, along with Noel Reading and Mitch Mitchell, an opportunity to perform live in the BBC studios. Thus, this recording combines the best of a studio recording and a live recording by having the band perform live in the studio. The result is an amazing recording.

First of all, the quality of the recording is fantastic, especially considering the technology back then. The sound is crisp and clean. Second, the band is having a lot of fun playing and it comes through in the performances. Third, because they performed live to tape, there are no overdubs, studio effects etc. so you get to hear the band in its purest form. I own many Hendrix albums, but this is the one I listen to most often because the performance are so fresh sounding. Highly reccomended!

Before the Hendrix family got the rights to Jimi's recordings, select songs from the BBC studio recordings were previously released on a single CD, called Radio One. However, this recording contains the complete sessions, including all songs and the DJ chatter, and so is a better, more complete recording than Radio One. The BBC Sessions also contains a very informative booklet. Get it, its worth it.

these are pre-canned radio shows with the ever unbearable alexis korner talking on top of the songs as wow cool groovy DJ "intro". the old Radio One was a real live in studio show that was GREAT. THese are mostly studio released cuts from the first and second album mixed with DJ chatter and one HEndrix interview with a phoney, well let's hear that song now shall we intro to the recorded album version! As one who has been seriously burned by repackaged Hendrix stuff in the past, and as a loong time fan (I remember when he lived and died) it takes alot for me NOT to recommend all things Hendrix, but I cannot recommend this. Find the actual LIVE RAdio One recording, not these packaged cut and pasted radio shows

I was pretty impressed with the perfomances of Jimi Hendix in this album. He, as usual puts his soul into all of his songs, but also is able to just fool around and jam like in his cover of "Hound Dog". Jimi gets to experiment with the blues as well in this album and I personally think that is where Jimi is most talented. I am also impressed with BBC as a whole, first because I have the Led Zeppelin BBC sessions, and they were equally as awesome. Second because in BBC sessions, the artists get to just have fun with the music and play with raw talent. I highly suggest this album if you are a Hendrix fan and you should look for other BBC versions of your favorite artists as well.

This is an awesome Hendrix album I connot complain about it in one way except for the fact that the sound quality could be better but besides that this thing can't get much better. It is cool because you get to listen to Hendrix play live at the BBC Studio. If you're thinking about buying it my opinion to that question would be definatly yes I have no idea how you couldn't like this album it is well worth the money and I highly reccomend this Hendrix 2 disk set!
