Responsible for many influential sides, the Wild Pitch label was at the vanguard of the second-generation hip-hop indie labels. The label first made its reputation with sides by DJ Mark the 45 King and the Flavor Unit, including Latee's "This Cut's Got Flavor." By the '90s, they had moved on to representing left-of-center acts like Main Source, Lord Finesse, and O.C. Before selling the label in 1994, Wild Pitch had big hits from the Coup and Ultramagnetic MCs. Among the seminal sides included here are Ultra's "Raise It Up," Lord Finesse's "Funky Technician," Gang Starr's "Words I Manifest," O.C.'s indomitable anthem "Time's Up," and no less than four gems (including two rare ones) from the legendary Main Source. This is a truly fine overview of the late '80s and early '90s underground. --Jeff Chang

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get better than this. Really........2001-05-12

There's not a dud on this comp. You'll be amazed and entertained from start to finish. Anything less than 5 stars is underrrating this masterpiece collection of classic underground hip hop. I can't wait for the second volume.

3 out of 5 stars Old School, Underground, Classic.......2001-04-06

All in all, it's a mediocre disk, but it's got a few classics on it, that make it worth the few bucks. I mean, where else can you find Live At The Barbeque (Nas's first track) on CD? Huh? And tell me you don't remember when Lookin' At The Front Door use to be the joint (Woo-woo, woo-woo-woo, woo-wooooooo)! Who remembers Hush-Hush tip? N-Tyce? Pre-Venom days? And, yup, that was Method Man on the hook. Even the corny tracks like Blue Cheese, have a bit of nostalgia to them. I gave it 3 stars, because most of the songs are forgettable, but it does have those few jewels that make it a worthwile addition to your collection. Hell, if one of my boys in college hadn't got me for mine, I'd be listening to it right now!

4 out of 5 stars classics.......2001-04-06

I'm not that down. But I can recognize classic hip hop and all these songs are and I'm enjoying it alot. "Looking at the front door" is a little played for me but it's still good. All these other songs are just aghh i don't know. This is the rap that an average rap fan doesn't hear alot of, but really wants to. I promise you. "Live at the BBQ" is great, Nas's debut on a record, and he rips it up. I think he was only 17 or so when he wrote those lyrics and not much older when it was done. "Court is now in session" is also, Biggie got his beat for "Friend of Mine" from this and oh these are classic songs. get it. There is Kool Keith before he was really annoying like he is now. You'll enjoy it i promise.

It may not be "real" or whatever to get a compilation like this but so what. great songs all on one CD... SOmething for everyone. it doesn't get 5 stars because that'd be weird to give a compilation 5 stars, but almost all these songs are definitely 5 stars and all the rest are 4.. get it get it get it
