With her breakthrough 2002 debut, Let Go, Avril Lavigne tried to market herself as the bona fide alternative to tarty teen queens, Britney and Christina. Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. But there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a teen-pop icon actually reveal her soul. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars I really like this one.......2007-05-28

I like this CD a lot. It's very Avril with lots of angst, and hurt. Lots of ballads, a lot of songs you can sing a long to.
Fall to Pieces is a favorite of mine on this CD, and upbeat song. It also includes " My happy ending" with a different beginning- a different sound. I am not sure the album shows much growth from her last album but it was good too, and Avril is in pretty uncharted waters here anyways....as most of her counterparts are less rock, and more bubble gum. It's a CD you can listen to more than once over and find a new one you like. There are a few songs on here that are a little weak....but otherwise it's a good cd.

1 out of 5 stars sad.......2007-04-14

What does she have to be so sad about? She is a multi millionare and shes crying and whinning over nothing. Get over yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Avril Rocks It.......2007-03-10

Avril Lavigne's cd cover almost says it all.Dark clothes.Dark makeup.Deep lyrics.Right?Yes.

The cd sounds wayy darker that the poppy lyrics and sounds of the first "Let Go."It has the radio explosion song "My Happy Ending."The song that all girls will love,"Don't Tell Me" is also included in this great cd.

Though many say she is goth at this point of her career, think.Loooking goth and being goth are NOT the same. Her lyrics and pure voice is what reallly counts. Not all these tags such as 'punk, goth, prep, and some more.'

The cd is great and filled with wayy more great songs then I have mentioned.Besides, the music rocks, the lyrics do,and her voice does too!

5 out of 5 stars A popular chick singer who is actually a musician!.......2007-02-26

This isn't a review as much as it is an observation, though I would give this album 4.5 out of 5 stars for great vocal maturity and a better rock edge than her previus release. It is simply TERRIFIC and unfortunately, rather rare to see a popular female artist who can actually play an instrument! And not just play, but totally ROCK OUT!
I have always thought it was ridiculus and quite stupid that artists like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson ever even became huge, pop- culture icon artists. Why do we fall in love with "artists" who aren't even musicians, or in Britney's case, can't even sing? (at least without a synthesizer) The pop-icon thing even sucks in good artists like Lindsay Lohan, who is quite a rockin' guitarist, and turns them into mediocre pop singers, making artists with a promising future like Lindsay into just one of the other zillion pop singers and groups.
It is also nice to see an artist like Avril who doesn't feel the need to make racy videos to sell her work. She simply lets the album speak for itself, which is good because "Under My Skin" is a truly great album.

Keep on rockin', Avril!

ps: By the way, if you like female singers who can play a mean guitar, check out Krystal Meyers. I know she's technically "christian" rock, but her stuff is easily as good as anything else out there, including Avril. Her song "Together" has been featured on the awesome NBC TV show "Heroes" and featured on the NBC website.

5 out of 5 stars More "mature" then the "Let Go" CD.......2007-02-20

I had already bought and listened to the Let GO CD several times. It reflected the young 17 year old singing it but I still liked it very much. Avril's "Under My Skin" showed a lot of maturity for the 19 year old. Under My Skin was more rock & Roll then Pop music. I am looking forward to Avril's new CD "The Best Damn Thing" coming out in April of 2007 and hope for more maturity. From what I understand the new CD is more pop and punk, hope it's at least equal to her first two CD's

Since his solo flight from Fleetwood Mac, Lindsay Buckingham has earned the kind of artistic acclaim for his sparse solo work that many peers have tried to achieve over the course of a lifetime. Under the Skin, stripped down to a mostly acoustic base with ethereal vocals and subtle affects, surfaces as if from a deeper soulful realm that is both magically fleeting and somehow permanent. It's a deceptively simple album with its acoustic guitars zinging South American flourishes here, semi-classical guitar figures there, and country-like riffs. Both "Show You How " and "Down on Rodeo"  beg to be adapted to the full rock-pop sound he and his former bandmates created. Buckingham's tempered vocals sound mysterious throughout, given the ambient production scrim he drops over the record's 11 tracks, including a remake of the Stones' "I'm Waiting" and "It Was You," with its suggestive Caribbean flavor and soft, industrial-percussive edge. Strange, alluring, and disarming, it's as if Buckingham can offer only passing personal glimpses into his own life and psyche as a father, husband, lover, iconic pop star, and California songwriter dabbling in but never anchoring himself in one place for too long. This pleasing shadowplay at times borders slightly on the self-conscious, but generally, with the quality of such lovely self-confessional songs like "Cast Away Dreams," Buckingham leaves us willing to follow him any place, wanting more. --Martin Keller

Album Description

Buckingham's first album in 14 years, Under The Skin, is a pop masterpiece worth the wait! All tracks were performed and produced by Buckingham, and all but two were written by him.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-07-05

Lindsey Buckingham is one of the best guitarists around. This solo effort highlights his brilliant fingering technique. The songs are reflective of an artist who is mature and aware of the life around him.

5 out of 5 stars Lindsay Never Disappoints.......2007-07-03

I've always looked forward to Lindsay's solo work--he IS Fleetwood Mac in its current reincarnation as far as I'm concerned. But this is by far his most profound music. He moves me more than ever. You cannot go wrong with this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good; not great.......2007-06-27

L.B. fans will likely find favor with 'Under the Skin', but I don't believe this CD was produced for mass consumption. I can't imagine the casual listener taking an instant liking to it. The vocal tracks have been layered, overdubbed, and tinkered with to the point of distraction. I don't understand why Buckingham chooses to do this; his normal singing voice is fine and minimal studio wizardry would suffice. This release is inferior to his previous solo effort, 'Out of the Cradle', but there are still a few good moments. My personal favorites are 'Down on Rodeo' and 'Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind'. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed, but that won't stop me from buying future solo releases.

5 out of 5 stars Flawed but rewarding work.......2007-05-30

Some listeners have complained about the production of the album and restrained singing, but these things - while they don't help the album get on radio playlists - were part of Buckingham's intention. He wanted a spontaneous, non-processed piece of work, something that would capture the creative moments of playing and composing during Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Will" tour. The result is sometimes self-conscious and can seem a bit claustrophobic. Because we're used to slick production values, we might wish songs like "Down on Rodeo" would get the full L.A. pop treatment suitable to its name. But the album, like Buckingham's tracks on "Tusk," succeeds in communicating an emotional intimacy. It is a work in progress that was never meant to be finished or polished. Get to know it - it's worth the effort even if it's not a good album for driving or aerobics.

4 out of 5 stars Breezy Mac.......2007-05-29

Like most members of Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham seems to release a new solo album every thousand years. Fortunately, Under the Skin, his most recent album, is a great offering.

Now, Lindsey's vocals aren't quite as accessible as they were in the `70s and `80s (although in "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind", he's singing in a different voice for some reason), but he still says some good stuff. Quality songs include "Show You How", "Cast Away Dreams" and "Down On Rodeo". And while I highly enjoy his remake of the Rolling Stones' "I Am Waiting", the cover of Donovan's "To Try For the Sun" blows it out the water.

With a slim 11 tracks, Lindsey Buckingham still proves that he has what it takes to create great music, so add Under the Skin to your collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love this album n the bonuses.......2005-10-10

I love this album as much as her first one. Avril Lavigne is a talented musician and a great songwriter. My absolute favorite song on the album is "My happy ending" she really hits the nail on the head with bad breakups and dumping a guy too chicken s*** to stand up to his friends. "I also have the habit of hitting the repeat button for "Don't tell me" "He wasn't" and "Nobody's home" The rest of her songs send strong messages about not giving into the pressure to have sex, not having to be perfect and getting the courage to stick up for yourself. If I ever had a daughter, I would be happy if she listened and dressed like Avril. Rather her than certain artists out there. This CD is a breath of fresh air from the nauseating unoriginal songs on the radio (see my scathing review on Britney n Jessica)

I was thrilled to see her music videos on the 2nd Cd. They were done really well n the whole reason I bought this dualdisc. I haven't really gotten to take a look at all the extras but when I do, I'll be back to give an update!

Conclusion: Both CD's: addicting
Britney backlash as a result of this album's popularity: priceless!

5 out of 5 stars If you like Avril, you'll like this.......2005-08-19

Yes, I already had the CD. but this is worth it for the video extras alone. "Nobody's Home" is fantastic, with the young-Angelina Jolie(Foxfire) look-alike. my only complaint is that it should have been longer.
If you are already an Avril fan, or if you are looking for an introduction to this wonderful, talented young woman's music, Get this disc!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a taste of something worth listening to!!!.......2005-06-14

Avril Lavigne expresses herself really well in this album. None of the songs sound the same, and her voice is so totally COOl! You wont regret getting this album coz it rocks and you should also get 'Let Go', her other album coz that also ROCKS! This is one singer im not dissapointed in..never will be. Its also really impressive that she writes all her songs on 'Let Go' and writes all her songs in 'Under My Skin' too. She's really creative and she's the BEST female singer ever!!!!

My favorites are: Who Knows, Nobody's Home, Take Me Away, Together, My Happy Ending, DOnt Tell Me, He Wasn't... in other words ALL OF THEM!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dual Disc Disaster?.......2005-06-11

All dual disc problems aside, might I say that I love Avril Lavigne's music. She is a great and fresh addition to today's music realm. I was at first skeptical about her first album, "Let Go," but it captured my attention and devotion, and now, "Under My Skin" has strengthened my loyalty.

Anyway, the Dual Disc was a pricey investment. The original copy of the album came out in June of 2004. I had already purchased it the day it arrived in stores. Of course, now in 2005, the Dual Disc formatted version comes out and I'm left to pay for a second copy of the exact same album. This was only because I was interested in the music videos and behind-the-scenes footage. As for the "high quality" sound, you can't tell the difference. I suppose you would be able to if it was say, an acoustic or opera performance. I thought that the original version was already produced in enhanced stereo anyway... I only wish that Dual Disc had been available last year. Nevertheless, it IS nice to have a back-up copy of the original. I also noticed some differences between the two versions. On the original, the album cover art is a clear, black/gray/white and a clear image. On the Dual Disc version, the album cover art is a more sepia/old-photograph style with a soft, blurred image. I'm not sure if this is coincidental, but maybe it will lead to something in the future.

All in all, the bonus videos and behind-the-scenes footage is a nice addition to an Avril fan's collection. It is well worth the extra $14.00 if you already have the original copy.

Always keep rockin' on...

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this CD!.......2005-05-08

I am one of the few people that buys all of his music (instead of illegal downloading) because I want to support the artists that I like. When I buy a CD I always make a copy so I can burn a back-up, play it in my portable player, make my own mixed cd,etc. These new "Dual Discs CANNOT be copied/ripped on a computer!!!!! I have tried 4 different programs and it wont work. In my opinion it ruins the way that I want to use the music I purchased. I will NEVER again buy a dual disc. What sense does it make if you cant listen to the music the way that you want to enjoy it.

BE WARNED. BOYCOTT THE DUAL DISC!

5 out of 5 stars The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24

This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2001-11-25

Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17

Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

4 out of 5 stars A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04

Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.

The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.

There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.

Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24

Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

Its been along time since i've listen to this. The premier music services do not offer it for dowload, so i broke down and brought the album...Still sounds awesome. Klay Scott/Scot albert or whoever he is on this album, shows his uncanny ability to mix the most opposite of sounds to produce a very powerful mix. As you can imagine from the cd cover art (the term "dont judge a book by its cover" does not apply in this case) indicates that the overall feel is one of retribution and bitterness. If your not overly sensitive to this and love metal/industrial/samples, this cd is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21

Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.

And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).

5 out of 5 stars This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.

1 out of 5 stars pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here

4 out of 5 stars Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30

This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.

5 out of 5 stars Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06

John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

The cover art for this ablum Philip looks like my Ex best fiend Daren while the profile shot of Philip looks like Sam Roesenthal from projekt records. Its canny that his voice sounds like Dan Ian from Astrovamps. Love the song She's Risen. This band has the makings of a great goth band. PLEASE LISTEN, BUY and Support this band.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly suprised and delighted.......2005-07-06

Not knowing what to expect from this band, I popped their new cd, Malice, into the player. The sounds that came forth were comfortably edgey and transcendal. Very few artists in the past two decades can make me want to hear their entire album again after the first go-through but SFE has been in heavy nonstop rotation on my player. Their deep sound, and swirling melodic beats makes for an excellent atmospheric choice in music. Especially if you like dancing to intelligent accompaniment...these guys are gooooood!

It would be great if there were sound clips on this Amazon page so you can get a taste of SFE. But, until then, go to their site screamingforemily . c o m and watch their promo video... NICE!

5 out of 5 stars Kostelanetz Treasures.......2001-02-08

In my opinion, the composer series recordings by Kostelanetz are among his best. The arrangements are for full orchestra and some of the best examples of Kostelanetz' passion and insight into the golden age of musical theatre. Six of the Cole Porter selections I had on '78s when they were first recorded, and the arrangements are the essence of Cole Porter. Kostelanetz indeed, plays the words, that is, during recording sessions, the orchestra members had the lyrics as well as the music on their music stands. My favorite is Porter's "I Love You". The Kostelanetz strings have a way of reaching my heart strings - it seems to express in music the way I feel about my wife of 42 years - you guessed it - I'm in my late 60's. I have this CD on back order, and have not really listened to it - but I have enjoyed these recordings for many years. However, to evaluate the quality of sound on these CDs I purchased the CD in the same series "Music of Irving Berlin" . The sound is outstanding, and true to the Kostelanetz original recordings. The Vincent Youmans recordings are a bit newer and first appeared on mono-LP. Again, they are excellent Kostelanetz arrangements and outstanding performances. What a treasure to find both of these wonderful LP recordings on one CD. I expect to have my copy of this CD from Amazon within the next week or so, and I will update this review after listening.
