5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Why don't more people know about this band?.......2006-01-10
"I try to tell you, yeah I can only say it when we're apart."
"Sometimes girl when I'm lonely, this is how I think about you"
These are lines of great writing and singing. Some of the best lyrics you'll find anywhere, there's more but I'm listening to it now and can't remember them without skipping the tracks and I don't want to. I remember really being into this when I worked at this tv show and had to drive back and forth from Pasadena. This album got to me while driving under those train track looking bridges. It just melted over the radio and soothed me even though I had to run stupid errons, it didn't matter, this was where I was heart and soul into this thing.
The album starts so sweetly and then slowly you come to heartbreak and the soothing feeling afterwards of starting over again. It's their best and holds up over time, makes you remember the good things about lousy days.
Exceptional songs.......2006-01-07
I have never been a Go-Betweens fan but this cd is exceptional. When I purchased it the salesperson told me it was well worth the money. She couldn't have been more right. As far as I'm concerned there isn't one bad song in the lot. I would recommend this album to anyone who asked for my opinion.
My Favorite Album of All Time.......2005-12-14
This would be my desert island disc, if I could only choose one. Sheer bloody magnificence is contained in these 10 perfect songs. I can't even choose favorites - my favorite is whatever one I'm listening to at the moment - but highpoints include: the fragile, but optimistic "Love Goes On!", the deceptively sunny, but dark "Streets of Your Town" (it's "full of battered wives") and "Quiet Heart", a tender love song that contains the somewhat depressing, but nonetheless true, wisdom "No matter how far you've gone, you've always got further to go".
"Dive For Your Memory", too, is sublime, Zen perfection. Very forlorn, but deeply poetic lyrics, set to a gorgeous, simple folk melody, accompanied by rich and tasteful acoustic guitar fills...
And, let me not leave out the romantically tortured narrative of "I'm Alright"...the protagonist of this song has been beaten down, but is, somewhat shakily, ready for a comeback.
Every Go-Betweens disc is worth picking up, but this is the most masterful and perfect distillation of their gifts so far.
(I'm a huge fan of them all, but if I had to narrow it down, I'd say the ones to get are: "Tallulah", "Liberty Belle", "Spring Hill Fair", "Oceans Apart" and, of course, this.)
hugely under-sold masterpiece.......2005-11-18
You can't say this is underrated - critics have raved about it since its release - but at about 18,500 in the Amazon sales list, it is obviously unknown to millions of people who would adore it.
See previous reviewer for the run-down - I agree totally. I know all this group's albums. I saw them live, and McClennan solo - in fact I'm seeing Foster and McClennan at the Sydney Opera House next week. Sometimes they're not entirely easy to like; they make you work for it a bit.
But this is their masterpiece. Every memeber was in top form, despite personal turmoil, and the 'indie Rumours' is a good description. It's probably the best 'serious' rock/pop album to come out of Australia (challenged only by the more confronting Nick Cave). Gorgeous is the word. Pop music of the most affecting kind. In a fairer world, 16 Lover's Lane would nudge its way into the best 50 albums of all time.
The Go-Betweens best moment given fantastic treatment........2004-11-30
Without a doubt, this is a must-have for any fan of the Go-Betweens and the place to start if you are new to the band. "A man far wiser than myself once referred to "16 Lovers Lane" as 'the indie Rumours'" the liner notes say in this fantastic re-issue of the Go-Betweens ultimate set of songs. No truer words were ever spoken about this amazing set. Why this album didn't spawn at least five top 10 singles is a mystery that will never be solved. But needless to say this is a fantastic set made even better by the wonderful packaging and extras included with this re-release
For those of you unfamiliar with the Go-Betweens work, this was the consummate work of their 80's heyday, for a great many reasons. The music is bright pop music, crystal clear, but in no way is it featherweight pop. The songs are beautifully arranged, every instrument, vocal, handclap, and anything else perfectly placed with not a note out of place, but this can be said of nearly every Go-Betweens release.
The lyrics, plaintive ruminations on love, are clearly written by two songwriters/lyricists going through the opposite sides of relationships. I will not go into detail here as the liner notes tell the story, but the interplay within the band as these relationships play out are what drove the entire release. Each lyricist, Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, gets about half of the album's lyrics, and that is what makes the CD special. Images of the giddyness of new love ("Love Goes On!") are juxtaposed with images of love lost in such as way as to be almost shocking. "I'm ten feet under water/standing in a sunken canoe/looking up at the water lillies/they're green and violet blue/still the sun it finds/a place to light me" from "Love Is a Sign" has to be one of the best descriptions of how it feels when a relationship falls apart that has ever been placed in song. These themes are repeatedly dealt with in different ways, from young lovers meeting and breaking up to the "old" love of couples with children ("You Can't Say No Forever") having a fight.
The bonus material in this handsome double-disc set is truly welcome. The videos to "Streets of Your Town" (still undoubtedly the best song on this incredible collection) and "Was There Anything I Could Do?" underscore the relationships going on in the band while not seeming too terribly out of date. The bonus disc of outtakes and b-sides is also a fantastic addition to the set as it includes several songs that didn't make the final album cut but are presented as they were at the end of the recording sessions, being nearly complete but having that rough edge of a final demo.
The real treat come with the acoustic "demos" that are included. "You Won't Find It Again," "Apples in Bed," and "Head Over Heels" are played only by McLennan and Forster on acoustic guitars, providing for an intimacy that is unmatched anywhere.
To top it all off, the packaging (including an awesome essay by British songwriter Andrew Male) is exquisite, providing detail on the circumstances surrounding the album as well as any pertinent recording information.
This is "16 Lovers Lane" as it was meant to be heard--enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
One of the great albums of the 80s.......2007-03-14
Criminally unknown here in the US, this album has some of the most poignant, catchy, melodic, yet bittersweet, pop music of the 80s. To any fan of alternative rock/pop of the era, this is an essential addition to your collection.
More than any new indie rock band.......2005-04-29
Ok, everyone is now enchanted with Montreal's Arcade Fire, or spending their money with Bloc Party and over consider things like Mars Volta, but I think they're still far from great original indie core. "16th Lovers Lane" was recorded almost 20 years ago,and still it's songs are pristine and loveable as the first time I've heard it. "Love is a Sign" is the most strange love song I've ever heard: "I wish you had a big house, and that your work would start to sell", needless to say more. Buy it, thanks God for this new edition, and when you went really deep into the Betweens, go and check out, for another Aussie stars as The Cannanes.
16 Lovers Lane - Buy This CD Now!.......2004-05-03
I had purchase this on cassette tape from many years ago, but just purchased this masterpiece on CD. This is by far the best recording by an underated band who deserved more credit in these United States. Every single song on this album is brillant. 16 Lovers Lane is magnificent, simply breathtaking. I urge you Alternative Rock fans to purchase this. I would rate this in the top five of all the the past albums from the late 1980's. I know my music. So do yourself a favor & purchase this gem right now. You won't be sorry.
as melancholy as lost love.......2004-02-02
Good sensitive souls of the universe, who carve a world inside songs to build a safe home for their hearts, please, won't you buy this record?
Beautiful, longing, romantic pop.......2003-09-02
Just one of several great albums by this endlessly inventive songwriting duo. As usual, all the songs are catchy in a thoughtful, subtley structured way. The lyrics are somewhat minimal, yet immediate and engaging and evocative, effortlessly throwing up a narrative you feel more than you follow along like a plot. There's an overall sense of happiness tinged with a kind of sad longing, not exactly bittersweet. It's more mature than that. Seems to have a lot to do with the fact that they recorded this in Australia, after having lived in London for the past decade. You get the sense of happy homecoming that also reminds you of the lost past. The last song, about diving for your memory ... what a beautiful phrase. And then the band broke up, because after years of critical acclaim, they just weren't able to sell enough albums. Thankfully they've come back and started recording again. Their last two albums, "The Friends of Rachel Worth" and "Bright Yellow Bright Orange" don't miss a beat. Just more great songs for a new millenium.

"top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18
If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.
Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.
Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

Album Description
Richard Maltby worked as an arranger for Paul Whiteman in the late 1930s before working for Benny Goodman - and writing his hit, "Six Flats Unfurnished." He formed his own band in the 1950s, and recorded several LPs, including these two he did for Columbia. During this time, he recorded for many different labels, and directed backings for Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Johnnie Ray, Vic Damone and Ethel Merman. Maltby later became Lawrence Welk's arranger and conductor.

Customer Reviews:
A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Genius?:.......2006-03-11
Grown men singing about ghosts, devils, souls, gods, and angels. When they move onto reality they sing about rain, not just rain, but spring rain from the Liberty Belle release, easy to see the genius here. Seriously when you buy an album and put it on you can tell what your going to get with them. It will be solid and hopefully grow on you. Unfortunately the items I have bought from the Go-Betweens have never lived up to their promise. The songs remain precious and dull. This is their best offering, but still it is rather bland and it does bother me when a band is ignorant and conforms to the worldview shared by the masses. They continue to do this and remain a band that delivers many types of love songs. Not always going below the surface, but always trying. Pretentious.
Just buy it..........2001-10-09
Following the mixed bag of 'Tallulah', '16 Lovers Lane' offers a more cohesive collection of the Go-Betweens unique, ultra-melodic brand of pop. This is their most polished album to date, though the studio-sterile sheen does not detract from the depth or character one typically expects from the Go-Betweens. In fact, the mellifluous, airy feel of the album suits the songs well; crystal-clear (largely acoustic) guitars weave intricate, lovely textures which, when combined with Amanda Brown's oboe and violin, form a mesmerizing sonic tapestry.
Of course all this atmosphere would just meander aimlessly were it not for sharp, solid songwriting, as well as the conviction that emotive singer/songwriters Forster and McClennan bring to their insightful, adult tales of love and loss. "Steets of Your Town" is one of the most beautiful, infectious tunes they've ever done, while its line "watch the butcher shine his knives/and this town is full of battered wives" makes for some brilliant, stinging irony. Likewise, Forster's hook-filled, moving "You Can't Say No Forever" features another thorn beneath the rose with "Yes my world's tumbling down/stone by stone to the ground/please take out the garbage". Brilliant.
What also makes this album different from its predecessors is the ease with which it all seems to come together. On the surface, the songs all seem to have a simple, even effortless quality, though repeated listens expose the complexity and sophistication lurking not far behind the soothing sounds. That they can take simple elements like acoustic guitars and major chords, and weave them into something so refined, demonstrates the brilliance and resourcefulness of this criminally under-appreciated band. This may not be their best album ("Liberty Belle" holds that proud title, in my humble opinion), but it's none the less a fine example of their now legendary, timeless approach to pop.
A masterpiece.......2000-12-14
The Go Betweens are one of those rare bands with two brilliant songwriters. Add the violin of Amanda Brown and you have an effortlessly transcendent album. The gentle songs of Grant McClennon chug along, 'Quiet Heart' and 'Devil's Eye' are beautiful pieces of music. 'Love is a sign' is my favourite, a poetic masterpiece. There is heart and soul all over this album, in an understated fashion. Musical bliss.
if you're in love - it's good to know someone cares !.......2000-10-10
I went through adolescence with this album at my side - I'm not sure what it heightened more - the pain or the wonder - but I wouldn't have been without it for the world. Consolation and Confirmation in equal measure. Anyone who's ever felt at the mercy of their own desires , you need this record. Buy it now.
top of the bill in heaven.......2000-10-08
Even the record company had no doubts this time. The Go-Betweens were about to be as big as REM ( Go-Betweens fans to a man , incidently ). Of course it just didn't happen and the band called it a day way too soon. Think of the "80's" and you think of Duran Duran , but somewhere out in bedsit land , hearts were being healed and blessed by Forster & Mclennan. Thank God I heard the Go-Betweens . Imagine if I just never had , like so many people out there. Imagine the Beatles totally missing the boat and having a cult following ... Poetry and Passion set to breathtakingly fragile melodies. Literate , friendly , sexy and cool - Buy this album now.
You can thank me later if you want.
