About the Artist
Sudden Rush has opened for acts such as Maximillion,K7, and The Fugees, just to name a few. They have also worked with and built lasting relationships with such prominent local artists as Keali'i Reichel, Willie K., John Cruz, Ehukai and many others. They have performed statewide, and can frequently be seen performing at benefit concerts that support the Hawaiian language immersion schools statewide.
Band Members: Kid Dynomite (Shane Veincent), is the complete artist. His dream has become our dream.
Pakalo (Caleb Richards), the element of excitement. His gift to spice up the crowd is a sight to see.
King Don 1 (Don Kawa'auhau) is also a Hawaiian language teacher, and his gift to merge Hawaiian language and Rap is truly unique.
DJ Radical Rob (Rob Onekea) also heads Way Out West Productions, and is the backbone of Sudden Rush's stage show. He has also produced both Sudden Rush CDs.

The subtitle of this compilation--"27 Tranquil Tracks from the Master of Baroque"--might suggest you're in for a dose of watered-down, Muzaked treatments, but not to worry: this is actually a very attractive theme album that makes an enticing introduction if you're just setting out to discover the wonder of J.S. Bach. Some of the most familiar music Bach wrote does indeed reside in the slow movements of his concertos, suites, and sonatas. Often, they reveal an Italianate love for spinning gorgeous melodies that sound eternally fresh and haunting in a number of contexts (witness the opening "Air on a G String" and its reworking in Procol Harum's hit, "A Whiter Shade of Pale"). Opera was the only genre of his time in which Bach didn't write, but many of his slower movements display the intense emotional focus of operatic arias, and Bach's range of expression can cover an infinite degree of moods--from "tranquility" to the deeply mournful adagio of Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. From its archives, the Erato label has culled interpretations by some of today's leading Bach interpreters, such as Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Jordi Savall, and Gustav Leonhardt.
The concept of "adagio" has been extended here to include chorales and slower passages from the great choral works, whereas some compilations offer only instrumental arrangements, thus overlooking this aspect so central to Bach's output. From the nearly two hours of music in this collection, you'll gain a pretty good overview of the stunning variety of genres that inspired Bach: the cantata, passion, concerto, solo instrumental suite, and many more (though a selection or two from the solo keyboard works would have been a nice inclusion). And, while Bach's slow movements are always integrated into a larger architecture, the gemlike beauty of these selections will likely inspire you to check out some of the full-scale works from which they've been excerpted. --Thomas May

Appropriate For Those Quiet Moments.......2004-03-02
Bach's Adagios is peaceful music that will soothe the soul. Each of the pieces have unique arrangements and emphasize different instruments. Some have a strong keyboard presence, others are more string driven, still others even feature a vocal choir. Some pieces are more captivating than others. Tracks 1 and 4 stand out on the first disc. The lead off track on the second disc is pretty memorable as well.
When I desire something more spirited, this two disc set has the potential to cause some boredom. But when peace and quiet is needed, this set is very appropriate.

This collection is a introduction to almost two hours of Bach's most seductive work during the Baroque period.
In the first CD, an almost ethereal quality embraces each piece, no matter the mood. You will feel peaceful, emotional, mournful and even filled with longing.
Qui tollis peccata mundi' from Mass in B Minor is magnificent. The church's influence on Bach's music is highly apparent and adds a spiritual dimension.
Andante from Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major is almost haunting and yet it almost embodies subtle joy or a feeling of anticipated happiness.
The second CD opens with Largo from Concerto for Keyboard and Strings in F minor and almost captures the feeling of spring. Perhaps the snow melting as you can almost hear drops of water falling softly onto the earth.
Prelude in C major follows with the vibrancy of new life or a stream meandering towards a river. Adagio from Violin Sonata No.5 in F minor always makes my heart beat just a little faster and reminds me of those first feelings of falling in love.
Sheep May Safely Graze from Cantata No. 208 is superior and almost translucent in quality and was almost as familiar as Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata No.147.

I really like this album. I bought it after watching Music of the Heart with Meryl Streep. I was looking for the cello solo her son plays in the movie. It is on this record, and it is exceptional - Suite for solo cello No. 1 in G major. Other notables are: Air on the G String, and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.
A Dream Album.......2000-06-25
Almost 2 hours of "distilled" Bach- selections of the sweetest adagios by some of the world's best interpreters of the Baroque. Contains the most melodious extracts from the world's greatest masterpieces. The solos by flutist, Jean-Pierre Rampal have a dream-like quality of tonal purity: fitting preludes to choral motets by the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. The inclusion of Largos, Andantes and Preludes add well balanced variety to the more liesurely adagios.The selections provide a wonderfully peaceful background for reading or just relaxing.

What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

For Fanciers of Chamber Music.......2003-08-26
This son who went away from Germany and Lutheranism to London, Italy and Catholicism, here provides a delightful recording of these quintets.
The balanced playing by the Camerata of the 18th Century on historic instruments is well done. The melodic richness provides each of the six quintets varying, enjoyable tonal color and bouncy themes.
Truly enjoyable for connoisseur of this baroque offering.
Nicely recorded, but lacklustre performances.......1999-05-27
The technical recording of this CD is ok. Good soundstage and range. Not superior, but ok. It is a DDD recording, and the CD appears "GOLD". I waited six weeks for this CD, but it was NOT worth the wait. The performance is lacklustre and mechanical. Nothing special about it. If I had heard it before I bought it I would NOT have purchased it. But it is nice for background music, very pleasant.
The out of print Archive recording with the English Concert with the Sextet in C major and OP.22 and OP.11 quintets puts this recording to shame, technical wise, and performance wise.
If you are looking for a JCF Bach CD that would be "similar", but to me much nicer, is the available (on Amazon.com) DYNAMIC label recording of the JCF Bach Flute Quartets, by Concilium Musicum.

No Ka Oi Sudden Rush! Way to educate!.......2002-03-09
I just have to say that after listening to this CD, I was amazed at the quality of Hawaiian HipHop music. The songs are very well produced, written in a very creative way and blended with what I am assuming are Hawaii's top recording artists. Im suprised that these guys haven't been on MTV yet. If you have to get one CD from Hawaii you need to get this one. I especially like Polynesian Party. That song rivals even national hits. Im proud to be Hawaiian and Im not even Hawaiian.
Cant wait for their new CD.

This is an absolutely amazing cd blending groovy beats with political enlightenment. Because of informative brahs like these I'm prompted to run for office and try vehemently to make a change in the way that America has been abusing her relationship with the nation of Hawaii. Don't let ou dwindled numbers fool you, we few stand strong!! Ka`ili!! There is nothing new about Hawaiian rap, in fact the ancient original Hawaiian music is rap...Chants accompanied by strong, percussive rhythms!! Rave on bruddahs, See you in the homelands... He au Hawaii!! Hawaii no ka oi!!

To start with you should know what Ku`e means, and Sudden Rush put the definition on the front cover. Ku`e is defined as, "To Oppose, Resist: Stand Different." Sudden Rush brilliantly uses their music to put out an important heartfelt message about the plight of the Hawaiians.
The CD Ku`e is a blend of Hawaiiana and Hip-Hop. Ku`e is a tribute to the Hawaiian Movement. In Ku`e Sudden Rush mentions many issues that burden Hawaiians such as the use of the US Military to force Hawaii to become part of the US, the government's broken promises, the plight of Hawaiians growing up in a eurocentric society, the attempted genocide of our culture, drug abuse and other issues that are important to Hawaiians. Kue may offend non-locals, depending on how much you know about the US take-over of Hawaii and its effects on the Hawaiian Culture. In addition there may be some locals who take offense to some tracks on Ku'e, especially those who believe in assimilation. In one track Sudden Rush poses the question, "What is a True Hawaiian?" and on the same track they state, "Being born on the Islands don't make you more Hawaiian." And for locals and non-locals alike passive or not who say think of the future, Sudden Rush put a wise saying in one track, "Today is yesterday's future." Tent cities are mentioned in one track. I'm from Kaua'i, so I know if you are local then you know about the tent cities. Go figure, why is a Hawaiian homeless in Hawaii? If you think Lazy, then you are LAPUWALE. Another old saying that pops up in another track is "United we stand, divided we fall."
The plight of the Hawaiians is similar to the plight of the Native Americans and that of the African Americans brought to america as Slaves and their descendents. Keep in mind as one track mentioned, "...being part of the Hawaiian Movement doesn't make us anti-Haole. We are anti-exploitaion, anti-oppression, and anti-subjectation..."
Ku`e is definitely for all of you who believe in the Hawaiian Movement, both young and old. I was drawn to the message and the use of the Hawaiian language in Ku'e. I personally don't like listening to rap, but the message and the beat are really enjoyable. Unlike gangsta rap, Ku`e is void of profanity and violence. But Ku`e does have all the Hip-Hop beats, don't be surprised if you find yourself dancing to the beats. Just remember to hear the words. I would also suggest Ku`e to non-locals who like Hip-Hop and those who wish to get another view of the Hawaiians, just remember what Ku`e means.
Locals know that being a True Hawaiian doesn't mean you have to be 100% Hawaiian blood, and Sudden Rush even raps about their own ethnic backgrounds. There aren't too many pure blood Hawaiians around, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of True Hawaiians around.
No matter how you feel about the message, there is no denying these guys have talent. I'm just thankful that they used their talents to make Ku`e, and I also hope our young Hawaiians pick up Ku`e and listen to the words.
I think the most important message Sudden Rush puts out on Ku`e is a universal message, "Be proud of who you are and where you come from." In my college sociology class the text defined Culture as a group of people with their own language, tools, and customs. Every culture has something to be proud of. Learn yours and be proud.
The title track #9 Ku`e is my favorite track. Listen and you'll know why. My Hawaiian CDs cover the spectrum from Traditional to Jawaiian, and I'm happy to have added Sudden Rush to the mix. I love my Hawaiian music.

Hawaiian Rap at its Best.......2000-06-20
Sudden Rush does an excellent job of bringing contemporary Hawaiian issues such as cultural pride and sovereignty to a mainstream audience using the medium of rap music. Ku'e blends English rap lyrics with traditional Hawaiian chants or a unique hip hop dancebeat with a Polynesian flavor to deliver Sudden Rush's message of cultural pride and nonviolent resistance to the annexation by and assimilation into the United States. This is definitely not a knock-off of the sound of the inner cities of the mainland. Ku'e should be in the CD collection of everyone who is Hawaiian at heart.
