Editorial Reviews
From the Label
YoungBlood's new CD is out! Entitled "Word On The Street", this follow-up to the band's 1997 release as the One Lard Biskit Brass Band, "Better Recognize", further demonstrates the group's command over all varities of New Orleans-based music. Powered by an impressive set of original songs by leader/Sousaphonist Nat McIntosh, this disc also features original contributions from Bass Drummer Moses Patrou and Trumpeter Chuck Wagner. Songs such as "New Blood" and "Get Out Da Way" speak of hiphop seeping into the music of the streets, and other cuts like "Word On The Street" and "I Hope" pay homage to the age-old heritage of traditional jazz. "It's All In There" uses an afro-brazilian based vamp to set up the horns and drums, and YoungBlood's frequent cross-genre drum grooves don't just move the music along, they throw it down, stomp on it, and ask it if it's had enough! Combining powerful horns, a driving bassline, and an unparalleled rhythm section, the YoungBlood Brass Ba! nd truly has "the beat to match your feet."
Product Description
This debut release from the YoungBlood Brass Band combines the traditional jazz from New Orleans with slammin horn lines and hiphop/Afro-Cuban drumbeats, creating a totally new sound in "world" music. Get ready to lose yourself in this groove. Is it Jazz? HipHop? World? Who cares. It's time to party. Now who's down?

Customer Reviews:
Another strong Broadway by the Year.......2006-08-20
Scott Seigel's concerts, Broadway by the Year gather a group of the current crop of Broadway performers and turn them loose on songs from Musicals that opened during 1 year on Broadway. It helps that 1953 was a strong year musically, with Bernstein's Wonderful Town, Porter's Can Can, Kismet and Me and Juliet from Rogers and Hammerstein. Jule Styne also chimed in with Hazel Flagg which contains one almost standard "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York. Some great stuff on this album, wonderfully sung as almost always. I love this series and hope to acquire each and every one at some point.

Customer Reviews:
Pure and straight ahead........2005-10-07
I originally bought this CD just for the 3rd track- Comes love, which is one of my favorite standards. I heard it on my local jazz radio station one early morning and tracked it down. I was pleasantly surprised to find an entire album of warm hollow-body electric guitar, Hammond B-3 and clean drumming. Chris Flory plays tribute to the greats- Farlow, Burrell, Kessel and Montgomery.
I'd love to hear this trio perform live in a club. It's good work.

Phat Tunes comin' Outta Long Beach.......2006-02-22
Bad Azz brings heat to the table in 1998 on his solo debut. The beats are variable on this album, ranging from G-Funk you can lowride to, to some old-fashioned rap and hip hop beats. Ant Banks produces 2 of the hottest tracks on here "Ghetto star" and "I Ain't Concerned." "We Be Puttin It Down" is a fun bouncy collabo between Bad azz and Snoop over a G-Funk beat and a talk box I think that says "roll, roll, roll." Bad Azz does get contemplative in the phat track, "My People." The track "Livin It Up" is hot also; the foreground beat is bouncy and fast paced, and the keyboard driven background beat reminds the listener of old school G-Funk, perfect to play at a party. The beat at the very beginning of "My People" (before it changes to the actual beat of the song)should have been used as a beat on another song; it is the best beat on the album.
4.5 star solo debut from Dogg Pound homie.......2005-06-30
After Death Row collapsed a new star from Long Beach emergered from the extended DPG Family & it was Bad Azz, who drops a straight up hard LBC/DPG-like sounding release for his solo debut. Packed with 14 songs, 2 are west coast classics, 2 I skip, and the other 10 are good or great songs. Guests are all DPG affiliates or his homies from the Low Lifes, and are on 8 of the songs. The production is great and is handled by some of the west's better producers at the time. Kenny McCloud & Gangsta of the Comrads each do 3 songs, Ant Banks does 2 great songs as does Soopafly, DJ Pooh, Flip, Big Kid, and Lil Beau of the Low Lifes each do 1 song. Bad be spitting some good lyrics and his flow is great over some of these beats, even some of the wacker sounding songs he tears up. Amust have west coast album for fans of the DPG/LBC type rap.

THIS IS IT.......2000-06-19
This is the best album to be put out by a Dogg Pound Gangsta outside of Death Row. All the songs flex with tight a$$ beats and hard hitting lyrics. My personal favorites are We Be Puttin It Down, Cookin Cookies, and The Stand. Get this album if your tired of rappers with nuthin to say with no skill and lame beats. This album has everything it needs covered!
THIS IS A TIGHT AZZ CD.......1999-04-12

Album Description
This debut release from the YoungBlood Brass Band combines the traditional jazz from New Orleans with slammin horn lines and hiphop/Afro-Cuban drumbeats, creating a totally new sound in "world" music. Get ready to lose yourself in this groove. Is it Jazz? HipHop? World? Who cares. It's time to party. Now who's down?

A solid, punchy start!.......2004-03-03
I first became aware of Youngblood Brass Band at a concert on the third floor of an old warehouse in LaCrosse, WI. I rarely buy CDs these days, but I bought their first two albums immediately. Their blend of New Orleans jazz and hip-hop, with distinct flavors of Afro-Cuban percussion and an arranging style right out of top-level drum corps (no doubt gleaned from co-creator David Henzie-Skogen's stint in the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps), is not only one of the most seamless crossover styles ever created, but also has more raw passion and power than any other band I've ever heard. The other co-creator, sousaphonist Nat McIntosh, has such technical majesty you'll wonder if your ears are hallucinating. Throughout his material, he makes a tuba sound like a dj turntable, electro-synthetic bass, rock organ, and even some sounds that defy classification. Having started playing together in high school, the core of the band has developed an incredibly tight synchronization with each other, and it shows. Each of their songs is well-crafted and has beautiful transitions and grooves in it. Their infectious fire will keep you dancing and humming their tunes to yourself for weeks, even months. And "fire" really is the only word to describe it; it's like having a horn line throw gasoline on you, a snare drummer/mc master strike a match to you, and then having a whole sousaphone full of liquid oxygen dumped on you just to kick it up a notch. In short, there is no band more passionate about what they do or how they do it.
This is their debut album, and it shows. That's not said to be mean or to suggest there's a lack of quality here. It deserves all four stars I give it. What I mean is that the sound on this album is noticably less complex and not as tight as their later releases. The compositional styles of Nat and Dave have matured over the years from this album to center:level:roar, as well as the band being able to produce a tighter, richer sound. However, Word On The Street also has much more of a traditional New Orleans jazz influence than their later two albums, so if you're looking for a "Classic" Youngblood sound, this is a great example. In fact, the "classic" sound is noticably lacking on their latest album, so this album works best as a complement to the later ones.
This is the TIGHTEST!.......2003-08-31
Whoa.... I've been looking for this CD for EVER, and I finally found it and bought (for a real good price too). The music is so friggin tight is ridiculous. Not like newer YBB, but great in its own way, with all of the improvs that are incredible, and of course mr. sousaphone. If you can get this album, DO! It will BLOW YOU AWAY!
amazing.......2003-02-06
This cd is so excting and addicting, it's hard to let it leave my cd player. I've had it for two days and several of my freinds have already asked me for a copy and they are just as excited as I am. Being a trombone player i appreciate what is needed to make this kind of music and it is done in such great musicianship that i am surprissed i have not heard them before. If you have any interest in music at all there should be no reason for you not to buy this cd, it is just plain awsome.
Innovative Urban Fusion Artists, this stuff is amazing........2002-11-13
Take phat hiphop beatz and mix 'em over high heat with soul-filled improvizational jazz and one highly skilled MC. Two smoking live sets later you got a room full of Young Blood Brass Band Fanz. Unlearn is Fusion taken in a new and exciting direction. These guys put hiphop and jazz (two distinctly American musical styles) together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. The result is what will be a classic for years to come. Party People in the house will unite with stuff like this.
a real cool CD!.......2002-01-24
The YoungBlood Brass Band performs music mainly written by Nat McIntosh aka The Warrior. You can easily notice all the brassbands that have had influence on them (Dirty dozen, Rebirth etc), but the YoungBlood Brass Band has developed its own sound. In contrast to the oldies, their tutti-sections aren't messy at all, they realy sound great. Most of the solo's are great aswell, especially the Sousaphone solo's are divine. Unfortunately, the trumpet solo's realy suck. I don't understand why they even let the trumpets have solo's. That was the only reason I couldn't give this cd 5 stars. But I haven't heard their latest cd yet, maybe the trumpets sound better on that one.
