Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22
This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:
Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.
Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".
Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".
The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"
Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".
The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!
Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16
This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).
"film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13
Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.
Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.
Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.
Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.
On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.
The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.
Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.
When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

Expected Something Different..........2006-02-05
Matt Kramer is a good singer with a distinctive vocal sound so I was glad to hear him again on record. When I started the cd I was completely thrown off kilter as the leadoff track wasn't anything near what I was expecting. Honestly I don't know what I was expecting but after listening awhile "Soul Star" was a decent opening number "So Long" has a simular sound and again is ok. The fourth track called "Spinning Round" is finally something different sounding and it is a much better song than the previous three manic alterna-metal sounding songs. The album does sound a little varied in effort and believability. There are Doors, Zeppelin and whole slew of Modern Rock leanings on this album. "Change" is another good track that stands out from the pack. This song would have sounded comfortable on a latter day Cult album. It seems to channel "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" & "The Air That I Breath" era Hollies. "I'm Getting Closer" has a nice Mike Inez fretless bass line that really sounds like a lost Alice In Chains track. Matt could be an excellent candidate to replace Layne Staley if the powers that be saw fit to continue that bands legacy. As we continue forward in this album the Smashing Pumpkins are ripped off on "Exit" and its not a great track to begin with fairly bland actually. The second to last song is "If God Could Hear Me Now" which is again an AIC swaggering groovey tune. The finale is appropriately called "Silence" and is conjuring up the mystical Led Zeppelin stylings of yester year. This isn't a bad album but it isn't something to knockdown grandma to get a copy of either...
this is the GOD of rock n roll.......2005-05-21
Matt Kramer is a very talented dude, best and unique voice I heard, he is like a Jim Morrison, so please support Matt by playing this cd to anybody you know pass on the word.
It's about time!!!!.......2004-05-08
I don't have the cd in front of me to give a song by song review but after listening to this cd 100 or so times i think i can give a review without it. First of all, if you were ever a Saigon Kick fan you will like this cd. The band Matt used on this cd is great!! The drummer Jonathan Mover once played with Joe Satriani, the guitarist was once a South Florida guitar hero and was known to be a shred type player in a band called Tuff Luck. Both of these guys had alot to do with the recording and mixing of this cd. I think as like a favor to Matt or something. Yeah, this cd was made with a low budget and you can tell. It sounds like a great demo type recording. Very raw and dry sounding meaning that there are little effects on this cd. But alot of cd's recorded today are purposly recorded this way so it works. But Saigon was a over produced band so it was different hearing Matt without all the effects and of course Jason's harmonies. Matt wrote all the lyric's on this cd but the music came from various musicians including George Lynch (from the Stonehouse project). The different writing on this cd brings a wide variety of styles to this cd as one would think. Just about every song is different which means this is for the open-minded listener (Me!). Now about Matt, again the vocals were recorded dry,the lyric's grow on you, he sings well but you can tell Jason is not there any more. Matt greatness as a singer is his the heart and emotion he puts in his performances. You can connect with him in some way and I feel Saigon was missing that once Matt was gone. Therefore, Saigon lost there magic without Matt even though they wrote some great stuff without him. But it wasn't the same.
Standout songs are "So long", "Soul Star", and "If God could hear me now". This cd was long overdue and thank God it was not disappointing after a 10 year wait. For more info check out mattkramer.net.
It's great to hear Matt again........2003-07-13
This is a great album, with excellent songs from the original Saigon Kick vocalist. It is not as good as Saigon Kick's debut album, but better than The Lizard and just blows away anything the Jason Bieler fronted Saigon Kick ever did!
I was rather surprised that someone who hadn't released an album in over 10 yrs could comeback with something this good. But am more than pleased that he did.

better than the original (possible spoilers).......2005-12-06
In the last decade or so, remaking classic movies has been on the incline. Though older generations criticize remaking these films, the newer generations are happy to see them with the latest theatrical technology. The remake I am going to be reviewing is called "The Manchurian Candidate". In my opinion, the remake is superior to the original. Though the acting was great in the original, I am more of a fan of Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.
The synopsis of the movie is this: Captain Bennett Marco (Denzel Washington) and Sgt. Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber) were part of a platoon of soldiers kidnapped and brainwashed in Desert Storm. Ten years later, Shaw, a "war hero", runs for vice president while Marco, label paranoid by the government, eventually remembers being kidnapped and discovers that Shaw's mother (Meryl Streep) played a big part in the brainwashing. Bennett must now convince Shaw that the brainwashing really happened. Washington does a superb job as the hero; he isn't the flashy, perfect hero that we usually see in movies these days. Schreiber also does an excellent job in this movie as well. His character is the innocent victim. He is a good person but is under the control of his evil, power-hungry mother. Streep steals the show though. Her character is so manipulative and evil that is was just great to watch. The director, Jonathan Demme, does an excellent job guiding this movie along. The camera work that he utilizes really adds to the suspense of the film.
Overall, I think that any fan of suspense movies should go out to see this film. It is very creepy in the beginning and then gets better as you figure out what is going on. The actors all give an excellent performance and are lead by a great director.
"1962 plus the 2004 ~ Manchurian Candidate is a winner!".......2004-10-06
Varese Records presents two versions of "The Manchurian Candidate", both are excellent films with a great cast, directors and score that will leave you with something to think about.
The first "Manchurian Candidate" (1962/126 mins), Director John Frankenheimer featuring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury, James Gregory, John McGiver and Leslie Parrish in a cult favorite of Cold War Intelligence mixed with a political assassination attempt ~ Harvey's portrayal as a brainwashed soldier is believably effective, his stepfather James Gregory (Senator Iselin) as the not to bright politician is a scene stealer ~ Harvey's domineering Mother played by Angela Lansbury is an Academy Award performance, when she's on screen her evil schemes cut right through you ~ with composer David Amram throwing cues at you "QUEEN OF DIAMONDS", "SLIGHTLY MANCHURIAN BLUES" and "MESOPOTAMAN MAMBO...but my pick from this score is "THEME FROM THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, the jazz version is a sure-fire winner with over five minutes of great JAZZ!
Second score from "Manchurian Candidate" (2004/130 mins), Director Jonathan Demme featuring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schrieber, Jon Voight and Kimberly Elise with an update of a classic thriller ~ Washington's facial and shifting eyes lends an intense factor to this remake, and it works ~ the score by Rachel Portman and Wyclef Jean with cues like "FORTUNATE SON" [instrumental], "MIND DRUGS", "DEEP IMPLANT BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION", "WHAT IF ALL THIS IS A DREAM?", "THERE ARE ALWAYS CASULATIES IN WAR" loaded with psychological-political themes and biting assassination spell-binding plots keeps you on the edge of your chair...presidential election mixed with mental illiness that Portman's score covers, as she crosses every "T" and dots all of the "I'z"...don't miss picking up this soundtrack...a must have for all "film-score-buffs" and collectors alike!

Metropolitan Opera soprano Heidi Grant Murphy and her husband, the pianist and conductor Kevin Murphy (also of the Met), conceived the concept for this recording with guidance from their friend and Met colleague, Ken Noda. The intent was to convey a feeling of infinite tranquillity, reverie, dreaminess, and tenderness. Though the disk's packaging--including its title--may strike some as slightly drippy, the recording deserves high praise on musical grounds. The selection of repertoire is excellent, and as a result, the disk's overall feeling is one of serene continuity. As interpreter, Heidi Grant Murphy brings out the many subtly-shaded moods in this music, and her voice is stunning without calling undue attention to itself. It is by turns quiet, close, tender, and yielding. It's a special disk to have. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Truly lovely.......2006-08-23
Ms. Grant Murphy has an exquisitely tuned and toned soprano, and her husband, Mr. Murphy, accompanies and supports with great delicacy and musicality. The selections are wide-ranging and eclectic, and I found most of the disc utterly entrancing. Heidi Grant Murphy's voice is clear, high, pure and uniquely beautiful in timbre. I had the great pleasure of hearing her live in concert in 2005 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, in Mahler, and on the strength of that decided to purchase this CD. If pressed to find what I considered to be a weak spot, I would have to say that I did not find Ms. Grant Murphy's voice particularly suited to "O quand je dors", although the duo performance of that song was as thoroughly musically informed and well-conceived as any of the other selections included. I think this is quite a remarkable collection and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of art song.
Brilliant!.......2003-12-30
Seems like Laura, who gave a terrible review, is a bit jealous! She must have been competing with Heidi and was not picked. It is obvious she is terribly resentful of Heidi's beautiful voice and talent. Heidi's voice is angelic and peaceful. I highly reccommend all of her CD's. Her husband Kevin and she make a great pair and their talents are amazing! Keep them coming Heidi. As for you Laura, keep trying. Besides the attitude and resntment, you must not have the talent you thought you possessed.
Not worth the money!.......2000-11-26
Looking at the high praise this mediocre recording receives in the other reviews, I'm wondering whether I listened to the same one. I bought this recording with high hopes, but having never listened to her voice - I regret it. The material she performs is good (if somewhat standard), but her voice is really...weird. It has a Beverly Sills (past the golden years) wobble in it that she seems to think is a healthy vibrato. I know she was pulled out of Indiana U early for a Met contract, and I think they did her a disservice - her technique is horrible. She does have good control of her pianissimi, but as a whole, the recording is most disappointing. In the Rach, her fortes are frighteningly bad, almost embarassing. How does this woman sing at the met?
A Beautiful Voice.......2000-02-25
Heidi Garant Murphy is an exceptional singer. The magical tone of her voice is matched by intelligent musicianship. I recently (Feb 10) saw her as Sophie in Der Rosenkvalier at the Met. A wonderful performance, in which she was clearly the interpreter closest to what I think Strauss had in mind. She also had the most beautiful voice (although Fleming was also in excellent voice) This disc is another wonderful example or her singing. Kevin Murphy, who is her husband, provides a sensitive piano accompaniment. This disk is not background music. The sensitive interpretations require your complete attention to be appreciated.
Buy!.......2000-02-15
Judging from most reviews in the classical genre, I am not qualified to evaluate Twilight & Innocence for its technical merits, but let me say that Heidi Grant Murphy has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. The selections, and lovely piano accompaniment are a perfect showcase for her talent. I've worn out my repeat button on V'adoro, pupille...heidi and kevin, encore!

thanks again, naxos!.......2007-04-04
naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.
