Album Description
"Montana Skies"--cello and guitar--This CD is an homage to the "road trip". Not only the literal road trip, but also the metaphorical "road trip" of life. We've learned a lot on both so far, but mostly we've learned that it's never about the place, but always about the people. Much of this music was written and arranged on our cross country tour in the spring of 2004 and draws from the sights and sounds that we absorbed as we crisscrossed the US. We hope you'll enjoy the ride...

Innovative.......2007-05-19
This duo is one of the most innovative and creative ensembles performing today. The cello/guitar combination is refreshing and inventive. Rich textures and imagery abound. Great music; highly recommended.
Expressive, Engaging, and ExtraOrdinary!.......2005-03-10
With beautiful sound, Montana Skies flawlessly combines cello and guitar into melodies that depart from the ordinary classical. One can feel the passion they have for their music. The music resonates within one, long after the last note. I find myself humming the tunes all the time! There is something for everyone on this album. In these stressful times I use it at work and in the car to relax and detach from the hectic day-to-day. Aptly named "Chasing the Sun" brings some sun into my day every time I play it.
Must-have album for acoustic lovers!.......2005-01-23
This album is the follow-up to their self-titled debut, and it is just as fun, melodic and enchanting as the first...only better. Truth be told, I am a musician myself have begun touring with these guys, tagging along wherever I can as their pianist....that's how much I enjoy their music and working with them! This CD is a great addition to your acoustic collection and a great way to discover Montana Skies. I keep this CD in my car and find myself turning it often on a long drive.

Music Genius.......2006-03-28
Dear Miss. Gina Rene, Please forgive the obviously tone deaf Mr. Pernell Williams.
How on earth anyone could be so critical of her voice is utterly beyond me.
This album transcends any known genre. It is just beautiful. I'm not a true fan of modern music...and i'm not heavily into 'trip-hop', 'dream-pop', or any of the above. I just appreciate good music...and this is good music. Far and above, it is filled with genius and talent that will amaze the senses.
And to anyone else that cares to critisize Miss. Rene's vocal talents...you are either deaf or dead.
5/5.......2006-03-19
With a lot more marketing/advertisment, this cd easily could've sold alot more records. recommend this cd to everyone and anyone
Woulda been a 5, but..........2006-03-19
...for the extremely unimpressive vocals!
This has a great, second-generation Sweetback kind of feel, with moving beats and well-timed techno inserts. The songwriting and production is well within normal limits for a good product.
However, I am dismayed that Gina Rene is the frontpiece for this promising backround band. Her vocals are uninspiring, flat, and weak (yes, it IS that bad). Futhermore, the lyrics do not quite move me to listen and hear what she has to say.
I hope she: a) runs out and gets some training; and, b) uses it. Otherwise, I am certain I will not buy Soulstice's next.
(or, the band can ditch the singer....)
Straightforward, sexy trip-hop house.......2005-12-25
I only just recently got around to purchasing this album, after years of being just on the cusp of purchasing it, along with the remix album "Mixed Illusions". While not quite as completely blown away as I thought I would be with this, I am still very impressed and am extremely happy that I have finally added this gem to my collection. Currently, I listen to this one as well as the "Mixed Illusions" remix album pretty frequently. This is a very solid trip-hop/West Coast house offering. In fact, this album is just further proof that you just can not possibly go wrong with any artist under the OM Records label out of San Francisco.
The sound of the album is lush, sexy, and completely groove-centered. One listen to the most well known track on this album, "Fall Into You" should give you a solid idea of the overall feel of this album.
I'm gonna let it all go
and fall into you
just want to let it all go
falling into you
falling for you
falling into you
Very nice, sexy and simple.
Soulstice consists (though I think that the correct tense is past tense, so consisted) of four members, the most well known of which is probably Andy Caldwell, a now solo house artist with OM. The lead vocalist, Gina Rene, is heaven. Not incredibly unlike many other female trip-hop/house vocalists we have come to know and love, of which there are too many who are similarly praise-worthy to single out just a few here for comparison sake, but that is not a bad thing. Her voice is smooth, delicious, and deep.
One house artist/group that comes to mind when I listen to this album is Blue Six. So, if you like Blue Six's incredible album "Beautiful Tomorrow", then Soulstice's "Illusion" and "Mixed Illusions" albums are definitely for you (and vice versa).
So go ahead, kick off yours shoes, turn down the lights, and let yourself fall into Soulstice's warm embrace.
A Masterpiece !.......2005-06-22
This is the kind of CD that I love to buy. You go home, you sit down and you start to realize what a lucky buy this one was. This is such an undiscovered gem ! Incredible !
This is groovy, sexy, electronic/downtempo/trip-hop music that you NEED. Believe me, this is edgy stuff that will amaze you. This is Sade, Si*Sé, Bebel Gilberto, Blue Six, Hooverphonic, Morcheeba, and Portsihead all wrapped in a BETTER PACKAGE. Get it. Put it on. Pour a drink. Light up a phat one and let the sexiness of this beast take you places you've never been before.

Sexy, groovy, and well produced.. What more can you ask for?.......2005-06-20
A great remixed version of the original CD. The quality of the remixes here is superb !!! You will find elements of HOUSE, TRIP-HOP, DRUM N' BASS, and BREAKS all wrapped inside an incredibly sexy voice. You don't come across this kind of quality very often. Your lounge/downtempo collection needs this CD. Get it !
Please note that the only reason I gave this CD 4 stars (and not 5) is the fact that I liked the original version better than this remixed one.
Good Investment.......2002-08-23
This is a great CD. It's worth it for the Johnny Fiasco remix of "Lovely" alone. But believe me, the other tracks are awesome, too.
Ah! Hot!.......2001-12-10
Soulstice has been rocking my world VERY recently. I just got into them and heard this remix album, LORD it is soooo tight. Every song on here bumps, and almost every single track has refreshing, very NEW ideas. The production is sooooo amazing. Wow. JEEPERS!
I flip out so much because of the garage-2step stuff goin on in Lockdown, that first track, which as far as I can tell is NOT a remix, just a little gift that Soulstice threw in because they are so nice. A couple of the other later tracks we've got crazy syncopation in the rhythm, which is what I'm all about at this point in time. And as far as hiphop goes, anything with dj spinna on it gets me going crazy.
Get the original too just to understand the beauty of Soulstice, plus their respective remixers.
Awakening of the Soul.......2001-10-29
This album is a definate must have. Overall the vocals are hipnotic and the mellow instrumental musicianship is awesome! I recently got the chance to see Soulstice at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco and I must say it was a very moving experience. Get this album now! And if you can see them live...don't miss the chance to do so.

Customer Reviews:
Here's a follow-up I got excited about..........2006-07-04
... And then came the disappointment.
Having been a big fan of David Ryan Harris's old funk/rock band, Follow For Now, and then loving his self-titled solo effort (and the related Four Songs sampler EP), I was intrigued to learn of three other solo albums after his mostly disappointing effort with the band, the Brand New Immortals, and their only album to date, Tragic Show. Based entirely on the strength of FFN and DRH, I forged blindly ahead and ordered copies of Soulstice and Atlanta without hearing a morsel of either album, and pre-ordered Harris' yet-to-be released CD, Bittersweet.
With Soulstice, Harris forsakes his early funk/soul/rock roots, instead planting himself firmly in the dreaded 'singer-songwriter' mold. The bio on Harris' MySpace website indicates the direction he's going, with this pretentious bit of self-promotion: "David Ryan Harris is on a quest that has an almost mythological dimension to it. Armed with a voice that falls somewhere between Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, songwriting that combines beautiful haunting melodies with sharp storytelling and guitar playing that is blues influenced and rock sharpened, David has been searching for the truth in music." Etc., etc.
Well, with my first listen under my belt, I can honestly say there isn't anything memorable here, at all. Missing are the crunchy guitarwork, soulful vocals and groove-inducing songwriting from his early work. Instead, each song on Soulstice blends into a bland whorl of uninspired, folksy, strum-strum-strummed chord changes, awfully rhymed lyrics and flat vocals that left me wondering if I made the right decision to buy Atlanta, and whether or not I should cancel my pre-order for Bittersweet.
In the meantime, I'm going to give Soulstice another listen, see if it grows on me. Who knows - maybe it will. Stranger things have happened. Then I'll listen to Atlanta as soon as it arrives, and I'll get back to you. Until then, three stars is as much as I can muster for this one...
