Don't let the rough exterior and the propensity to rhyme about acts of violence and criminal activities fool ya. No sir, Ja Rule is a lover and girl he's gonna make you love him. Make you as in wear you down and render you defenseless against his almost nonstop and thereby "persuasive" presentations of the pros of loving a thug. He might be crude, he might be loud (hell is he loud) and his flow might make DMX's canine fixations seem like subtle artistry. But be he rapping or be he semi-sing-songy vocalizing, Ja Rule's brand of rough-and-tough love gets under your skin. OK, it also starts to get on your nerves, but what Mr. Rule lacks in finesse he makes up for in intensity. Musically, his sophomore CD, with its stutter-stop break-point beats and its rich, resonant sound is nothing to ignore. Which must be why the first single, the off-kilter "Between Me and You," is so successful. This isn't groundbreaking or even significant stuff, but Ja's raspy roar has a certain appeal. While said appeal is geared towards men in the joint and the women who stand by them, you can't hate on a guy for trying, in his own way, to show a little love in this cold, cold world. --Amy Linden

After his successful debut, Ja Rule didn't take no time whipping up his second album. "Rule 3:36" spawned the hit singles, "Between Me and You" and "Put It on Me." It was released in Fall of 2000. Can Ja do it again and release another very solid effort or will he fall to the sophomore curse?

Wow I can't believe my ears, Ja Rule sold out big time! He almost dropped his whole street style completely and pretty much filled this album with all commercialized pop-rap music. Some of it is good no doubt but this isn't an album you can bump and nod your head to. Good for a couple listens then probably never again. Mannn Ja what happened to you?

Maan, ima venda spenda of dis shizzi hur but fur shur, iz hord cor poor. I meanz what I be sayin is I be buyin all the hip s*** but when i play dis on ma player my mind be hurtin, in da bad way. So fow sho, to all da playaz out thay stay clean of this bad crack, itll hurt yow mind and yow poket.

This album sold 4 mil for a reason. Great production mic skills, catchy hooks and some street s***. Don't knock this album cuz Ja was public enemy at one point. Ja had the game on lock for a little while. I started to dislike his music after his 3rd album cuz he was puttin out bubble gum, not cuz 50 and goon unit turned the masses against him. This album had like 3 tracks aand a remix ridin hard through 2000 and mid 01. This was a good follow up release. Its hard to see Ja as hard now. I just want to help out the ratin' cause of the d*** riders on goon units bandwagon.

PS every Goose unit release is usin Ja's formula. So who's fake now?

A lot of people are meriting Ja's credibility on all his albums because he has been able to keep his voice on the airwaves since 1998. So he released his sophomore album Rule 3:36 in Sept 2000, that is one of the worst Ja albums I've heard (not the worst, The Last Temptation takes that title).

Ja tries to be "gangstafied" on this album but fails terribly. Starting with the first single "Me & You" thinking his thug style can attract women. I haven't bought the concept in 2000, and I'm still not buying it six years later. Or how about the flat falling track "F*** You" featuring Vita and 01?

Or as many revewers have pointed out that he tries to boast his singing vocals on this album, which seriously damages his creditablity. How about the song "Put It On Me" before Lil Mo joined song. Sounds wack(er) with out her. Or how about the late Barry White imitation on the song "Extacy" (and thats one of the decent tracks on this album). Oh and remember when "Between Me & You" was highly antacipated that you downloaded the single on Napster? Well do you remember that the origonal/demo that some of you downloaded didn't have Christina Millian singing the hook, but had Ja singing it himself. Thank god that wasn't on the album.

Now there are some listenable tracks on this album that I would like to point out. "6 Feet" is a standout track, and is possibly the best track on this album and my personal favorite. "Watching Me" is another tight track, as Ja spits with a load of energy within him. "I Cry" and as mentioned earlier "Extacy" are decent at best. Other than that, most of the tracks on this album are skippable.

Overall, a sub medicore Ja Rule album. Most of the 4 and 5 star reviewers are either big time Ja Rule fans or just in love with mainstream overrated rap ("Put It On Me" [Remix]). To me, this album is nothing else but a pop rap, falsafied thug rap album that just doesn't appeal to me. I recommend this to hardcore Ja Rule fans if they don't have this already.

From the 1700s to the mid-1900s, Britian ruled most of the world at some time or another. Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.

This CD offers an excellent sampler of traditional British music. If you have watched Chariots Of Fire you will recognize Jerusalem By Parry(the final scene at Harold Abraham's funeral). This is a beautiful selection. The Tam O'Shanter Overture dispells the often unjustified characterization of the stuffy Englishman and is a rousing piece. All in all a very enjoyable CD. Buy it!

This one is for all those who want a splendid introduction to the music this CD offers. It would make a lovely Christmas present for the discriminating listener. My favorite is "Jerusalem!"

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.

One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.

Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.

The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).

One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.

If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

Thank God I didn't actually buy this album. I received this as a b-day gift and I have to say that it is the worst attempt at originality that I have ever heard. Not only does JA try and sound like PAC, I think he actuall thiks he is the man reincarnated. JA, you're forgeting one thig....TALENT. The entire album is filled with immature and naive rhymes that leave the listener feeling like it was written by pre-pubesent little kid. JA is smart enough to know that he can't carry an entire album himself and brought along a slew of R&B artists to add some depth. The finished product leaves much to be desired. Do yourself a favor and go buy an album by a real artist!

Ja Rule is a very talented rapper. To be honest, this cd has a lot of anger in it, but is a pick-you-upper on a bad day. The best tracks are Put it on Me and Cry.
