Pharrell Williams-BET
"My favorite producer? J Dilla... Jay Dee, he's bringing it strong."

Product Description
After serving quietly as a member of A Tribe Called Quest's production team and scoring hits for Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and Pharcyde, Detroit producer Jay Dee became known as a major hip-hop prospect by the end of the 90s. The hip-hop community took notice of his no-frills, breakbeat heavy hip-hop style as he helped craft albums for Common, Q Tip and the debut for his own group Slum Village. By the time of his major-label debut with Slum Village's Fantastic, Vol. 2 in 2000, Jay Dee was recognized as one of hip hop's most admired and desired producers. Jay Dee's debut as a solo artist came in 2001 with the release of "Welcome to Detroit" on BBE. Assuming the name J DILLA, he joined the Stones Throw roster in 2003, formed Jaylib with fellow producer/MC MADLIB, and released the album "Champion Sound".

Tragically, Donuts was released just three days before J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) passed away from complications arising from lupus--he was only 32. As one of his last projects, though, Donuts is a fitting reflection of Dilla's creativity and an apt tribute (however unintentional) to a career spent as the quintissential producer's producer. Unlike some of Dilla's previous instrumental albums, such as Welcome To Detroit, the songs here are less finished and polished pieces and more caught up in mid-creative motion. Unlike the soft, filtered sound he was known for in the mid-1990s, for Donuts he leaves a variety of soul and jazz loops in plain view but splices and reworks them as a set of sonic jigsaw puzzles. Spontaneous but not sloppy, the capture the late producer at his best--in the throes of his own imagination, each song poised with endless possibilities. --Oliver Wang

Some of the best music I've heard in a long time. I'm glad it is so unified. You can start it at almost any place on the CD and it doesn't matter... it ends cut-off just as it began. Sounds are layered and unexpected, and it's not tiresome or too random. I keep hearing new things.

Jay is not only a beautiful soul but the best sort of man one could ever hope to encounter in this life or the next. I love you sweetheart!

I have been a fan of Jay Dee for a while and I own most of the albums he has ever worked on. This is the only instrumental album I own of his and I love it. I recommend this album to anyone who likes Metal Fingerz, Madlib, Slum Village or anyone on Stones Throw. I almost never bought this CD but I'm glad I finally did. It will go good for anyone's collection. The beats are very unusual and thats what I love about J Dilla. I think the best tracks are track 10 called Time:The Donut of the Heart and track 25 called Walkinonit. If you do not own this album please download these tracks somehow. Ridiculous Beats! On another note I was sad to hear that such a great producer passed away. I believe Jay Dee would have been in his GOLDEN AGE if he were still alive.

Get this album simply because you're a fan of hip-hop, you're a fan of Dilla. Been a fan through the goods and the bads. I can't say much about it because it speaks for itself. It's a classic instrumental album. You don't get much of that anymore.

"The only drawback is that "Donuts" on a whole carries the stamp of something manufactured or, like the scarecrow in Oz, lacking a heart"

As I was reading that I was wondering if you even listened to the cd? Donuts is anything but manufactured, amazing beats like this CAN'T be manufactured. This cd is a classic, 31 tracks of the dopest beats you will ever hear from the most under appreciated producer/rapper of all time. Don't waste your time reading reviews on this cd, just buy it!

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

5 out of 5 stars This Sountrack ROCKS........2007-05-19

I love it, and I share it with anyone who listens to music, that means everyone. It should be like owning Pink Floyd's Dark Side, everyone should have at least one copy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Anime Soundtrack.......2006-06-02

I am not huge on anime but when i first saw this on Cartoon Network late one night i couldn't help but want to finish out the rest of the episode. It was awesome. What i found even more amazing was how well-rounded the characters were. What REALLY caught me though was the music, particularly one that they tend to play at the end when they show clips for the next episode. It was such a beautiful guitar peice and i said WOW.

Then of course i heard the closing theme when the credits run and thought i had to have it. It's so rockin and moody, that it puts you in the Trigun 'zone'. The lovely guitar peice is Fool's Paradise and the end theme Kaze Wa Mirai Ni Fuku. Then there are other beautiful ones like Not An Angel that just really add to how 3 dimentional the soundtrack is and how 3 dimentional it made the cartoon, instead of jamming it with just hard rock or techno/trance music from beginning to end, which would have been typical.
A great buy you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Trigun Soundtrack #1.......2006-03-29

This CD should be a great pickup for any fans of the series. One of the things that makes Trigun stand out as an anime series is the great musical accompaniment. Almost all my favorites are here, from the heavy metal opening theme to the peaceful guitar solo during the preview of the next episode. In fact, my only real gripe is the missing beginning of my favorite track. It is the saxophone solo that is played by midvalley the horn freak during the bar scene in "demons eye". That particular track is severed in half, with only the final solo making an appearance on the album. However the rest of the CD holds its own, and offers a great variety of music, most of which I find enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Questions looking for answers.......2005-09-28

I really enjoy the trigun series, and i am thinking of buying the soundtrack. I am curious though, i really want the tune that shows up in nearly every episode. The calm tune that sounds like a flute. I don't know its title or anything, but if you know what I am talking about, could you give me some info on it. thanks. [...]

A day has not gone by that I have not listened to this CD at least twice since I got it over a month ago. Go ahead and call me crazy if you want, but I love this music.
I'm horrible with persuasive words, so I'll leave the job of trying to convince you to buy this CD to the other reviewers who love it as much as I do. I just wanted to put in my five stars. That's all.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff - Let's Active meets Vinyl Devotion.......2002-03-05

Let's Active was the band fronted by guitarist/songwriter/producer Mitch Easter in the mid-80's. They were, in their heyday (say, 1984) criminally underrated; Mitch wove beautiful shimmering, chiming guitars over memorable pop landscapes. Mitch plays in Shalini's band, produced the record, and wrote half the material. "Telepathic World" strikes me as particularly beautiful.

Vinyl Devotion was fronted by Shalini. Their CD "Floor Model" was mostly produced by Mitch and written by Shalini; her songs usually combine a punk-like minimalism and directness with classic pop hooks. Good stuff. She's got a real feel for this music, though her voice leaves a bit to be desired. She writes half the songs here; "Creepy Emily" strikes me as a classic.

The record's a few songs shy of being "solid" but about half of it's startlingly good stuff. I definitely also recommend "Floor Model", and for that matter Let's Active's "Cypress" (sadly out-of-print) to anyone who loves pop-rock.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage + Modern in this case = Unique.......2000-10-11

If you don't have chills down your spine by the end of the first verse of "Telepathic World", you aren't a true fan of well-crafted pop/rock. Here, Mitch Easter channels familiar spirits (Joe Osborn's bass playing, Hal Blaine's drumming and the sonic grandeur of The Ventures) while Shalini's deadpan, yet somehow coy vocal delivery lends the tasteful ironic twist to the swirling audioscape. Exciting and varied musical refreshments abound on this record.

4 out of 5 stars You'll be singing along in no time!.......2000-09-20

An interesting blend of straight-forward grrl-writer/singer rockin' and a more mature take on southern jangle a la the 80's heydays, thanks both to Shalini and Mitch Easter (who penned 4 of the tracks & produced), respectively. It works!

1 out of 5 stars Jackie the Joke is right.........2000-09-15

Jackie the Jokeman, I'd rather listen to Diceman's new album 24 hours a day than this piece of garbage for 1 minute. This and every other "album" by this old, dried-up "comedian" are a pure waste of money. Listen to Opie and Anthony instead. Even Nancy Sieriani can't stand listening the Jackie anymore.

      1 out of 5 stars Dreary........2000-07-08

There's not much less funny in this world than Jackie Martling. His approach to comedy is to throw out as many "jokes" as possible, hoping that the infitesimal few which draw a laugh will drown out the following collection of unoriginal, old, and most of all unfunny observations. Shawn Wayans recently said words to the effect that "There's nothing sadder than a joke about something which no longer has relevance". Martling's work on the Howard Stern show and his live act shows this to perfection. In the new world of "shock" comedy, someone obviously forgot to tell the "Jokeman" that a shock without a valid punchline just points to a sad little man who thought his class clown status would play on the big stage.

      2 out of 5 stars Ohohohohohohoh!.......1999-11-05

OOOOOHHHHHHH! Jackie the Joke! As funny as Beetlejuice is tall. Stuttering John's CD was funnier. Jack, please, rip someone off, do anything but the tired jokes and the amateur delivery. Better yet, find a new line of work! F him!

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny needs to keep it going.......1999-03-16

Jackie has a unique talent to tell jokes and to make you laugh no matter how silly or ridiculous they may be. We own his other albums and hope he continues to produce funny stuff!!!

3 out of 5 stars Works Well With the Anime, but Not Alone.......2006-06-04

I will say first off that, as a person who saw the anime and enjoyed it to a certain point, almost all of these tracks on this soundtrack did bring back a moment of recognition. That has to say something for this soundtrack of mostly forgettable songs, because beyond that this a chaotic mix of techno styling that really didn't appeal to my ear, with the exception of, maybe, two songs. In the end, this soundtrack works excellently when combined with the anime but terribly for easy listening.

Here is a list of the tracks and my own personal rating:

        20. Perfect Night....................*

Most of what is on this soundtrack is techno-driven, with a few hard beats thrown in along the way, and even a pure country track. However, the only track that I really enjoyed was Fool's Paradise, as it actually had some emotion behind the instrumental sound that could be felt without the anime supporting it. Beyond that, Sound of Life was okay as one of the two tracks with lyrics to it (the other being track 11).

One thing this soundtrack has going for it is the simple fact that very little is repetitive, even though all but two of the tracks are instrumentals. This, however, is also the downfall of a couple of the songs, as it feels somehow dragged out and just longer than needed.

It's very difficult to recommend this to people outside of the Trigun circle, and I just so happen to be outside of that circle. I didn't like the anime much because of the terrible ending, and I never felt that the music to Trigun was anything special. Hardcore fans of this anime will probably love this soundtrack, though, since it does bring back a few memories of the anime, even to jaded viewers like me.

4 out of 5 stars Funky music that suits the series.......2006-03-27

There is no mistaking that this is Trigun. You can just see Vash and the gang of goodies and baddies in action. Definitely has some very catchy tunes. It also has some very odd pieces that just seems to fill in air space. The last number is strangely monotonous without any melody to it, which kind of disapponts. You'd expect it to be something memorable rather than an odd droning noise that seemed to go on far too long. But, it's worth it for the good titles, which far outnumber the non-good ones.
