Great 'new' Bob Marley.......2007-02-01

Imagine if we could get a cd full of new Bob Marley songs. Well, this is about as close as we're going to get. Most of the songs here haven't been heard by the general public or even most casual fans of Bob Marley. It's a shame and at the same time a blessing.

For as great as Exodus is it does get old hearing the same Marley songs over and over.

But are these songs any good? Yes!! They all fit together nicely and the sound is top notch, since this is one of Marley's latter releases. The remastering is also outstanding - something we've seen with all the Bob Marley remasters.

So, if you want a somewhat new Marley experience and you haven't heard Survival then you're in for a real treat.

Very good songs.......2007-01-11

This Cd is very very good, have almost the best songs from Bob and this version is remastered becoming the quality of the song better. If you like reggae music, good songs, Bob Marley and sound with Hi quality, Survival is a good choice. All the Best and Jah Rastafari!!!

Good songs, but a little too commercial sounding..........2007-01-06

This album has got a lot of great songs, like Top Rankin', but the overall sound is a little too canned, far from the great raw sound of early stuff that's on African Herbsmen and Burnin'. Exodus is about the limit for me on the over production. I prefer the less produced Marley sound.

True Survival.......2007-07-11

I'm 48, the last time I owned this album was about 30 years ago. If you can put yourself at a place in time where technology wasn't the same you can listen to the sounds of creativity of this trio that desperately pushed the envelope of their instruments to redefine rock-n-roll. The night I received my CD on the mail I took the trip memory lane, and yes there they were waiting for me... Grand Funk Survival can still make me feel the things that I felt then, think the thoughts that I thought then, and remind me that if you want to keep a "hand picked" collection of rock through the ages, Survival is a must.

almost as good as i remembered.they were always good back in the day but this is one of those c.ds that just leaves you looking for a peak in their music that never comes.

A Great Effort from an American band.......2006-03-14

There is a lot of different types of music on this album from Americas " Power Trio " of rock. It'all good. One hint of greatness from these guys is how Mel uses his bass as a rythm guitar to fill the gaps in " Gimme Shelter " which I prefer over the Stones version. They do make that song alone in itself sound great / better. This one is another of my ' audio arsenal ' and it should be yours too, especially if you are a GFR fan ( the American Band ). Good listening to you.

A Classic GFR Record!.......2005-08-22

I was probably 12 years old when this LP was originally released. I loved it then, and now with extra tracks, I love it even more.This LP was a slight departure from the "in your face" approach of thier previous recordings. They played this one a bit more thoughtful and melodic, especially side two (on the lp). Songs like "I want Freedom" and "I Can Feel Him In The Morning" give the LP and almost surreal feeling. Of course thier cover of The Rolling Stones "Gimmie Shelter" finishes off the original lp with a bang. But here we have bonus material to give you a different hindsight on that period in the band's development.All in all, I have to say this is one of my favorite GFR albums. So why only 4 stars? Because even as a kid back in the 1970's I felt that "All You Got Is Money" was a horrible song. It should have never made the LP. I can see where Mark Farner might have been concerned with greed at the time, The band was becoming more sucessful with each new release. But where money grubbing hangers-on might have been a concern of Mark Farner at the time, it was not much of a reality for the fans. Think about it...GFR was a "Peoples" band. Mark Farner was a spokesperson for a new generation of young people who were mostly opposed to the mindless slaughter going on in Vietnam, and the abuse of federal and local political power of the estabilshment of the late 60's and early 70's. I don't see how he could think his fans would relate to a song about people who prey on the "well to do". Most of us were far from rich, and had no concept of the notion. The song had no realtion to the generation, or the culture of the fans he was addressing at the time. I admit, he might have had a different concept in mind, but it did not come across well, and did not fit well with the feel of the rest of the LP. It's the only bad song on the record, and IMO, it should have been left off and something else should have been used in it's place. It just does not fit.Otherwise, I have fond memories of this record. I'm glad Capitol finally got around to giving it a shot on CD. And with the bonus tracks, it's even better.

Good ol' Rock N' Roll.......2007-05-07

I was actually kind of surpised at the mediocre star rating of this album. I will admit that I really enjoyed some of Saliva's earlier stuff, but honestly people, rap-rock is dead. I applaud Saliva for putting out an album of unapologetic rock n' roll, complete with over the top, pretentious, cliched lyrics of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. No, you will not find deep, introspective, heart-felt lyrics (although, I'm pretty sure F**k all y'all was pretty heart-felt). And there's not a whole lot of really imaginative, diverse song-writing. What there IS, however, is an album's worth of well written, well mixed, well executed, bang-your-head, turn-it-up-to-11, straight ahead hard rock songs. WITH SOLOS! I was stunned to hear how good the solos actually were (from a guitar player's perspective). The guitars just shred.

I don't know when all of a sudden every song had to say something. I'm glad that Saliva felt it was o.k. just to put out an homage to rock music, complete with lyrics celebrating everything that rock embodies (kind of a throwback to the hedonism of 80's rock).

For those of you who are undecided, go into this album not expecting anything. Those expecting the saliva sound of the first two albums will be disappointed. Those expecting the softer sound of the newest album will be disappointed. Those just looking for a good, raunchy rock album will be quite pleased.

This is Great!!!.......2007-03-10

There would have been a time when I would have given this only 4 stars, but since the new Saliva CD came out (Blood Stained Love Story) I realized how great this was and how bad BS Love Story really is!! Anyway, this CD is very good with only a few bad tracks. I really enjoy the hard edged Saliva (not the new mainstream weak crap)!! The whole CD is very good but my favorites are Survival of the Sickest, Carry On, Two Steps Back, and No Hard Feelings. Overall this CD is very good and worth a try for any one who like metal!!

What happened?.......2007-01-24

Sheer disappointment. 'Every Six Seconds' and 'Back into Your System' had such great cuts with great harmonies and you could just totally rock and roll with each song. This, friends, is garbage. I don't know what these guys were thinking when they decided to release this mess. The only standout songs are the title cut and "Rock and Roll Revolution". Pity.

The entire album is phenomenal. Yes, the lyrics are pretentious and can be a little annoying if you sit down and analyze them. However, when listening to this album as a whole it is just a true rock n' roll album. Saliva has a unique sound on this album and it rocks...not a bad song on the cd.

Amazing.......2006-04-26

This album is amazing. The first 2 tracks, Rock & Roll Revolution and Bait & Switch will simply blow you away. This is some mean rock and roll. There are hard rockers like the ones just mentioned, as well as Survival of the Sickest, Two Steps Back and I Want You. There are also beautiful slower songs, such as No Regrets Vol. 2, Open Eyes, The Razor's Edge, and No Hard Feelings. The last bonus track, track 14, may even be the best song on the cd, and reminds me of AC/DC a little. In all honesty, I could live without the songs One Night Only and F*** All Y'all, but overall, this cd deserves in excess of 5 stars. I'm not sure why, but for whatever reason it seems like the cd was hardly promoted and never got on the radio much, but it is excellent anyway. I recommend it to anyone who liked the previous Saliva albums, and anyone who likes straight, pure rock and roll.

Awsone Fat Whreck Chords punk.......2004-07-10

Punk Rock Greatness!.......2002-09-18

If you love melodic punk rock, get this CD! All the songs on this compilation are great! This CD is over 5 years old though, so these songs have been out a while. Chances are you've heard them on the full length CDs from each band on here. There are a few exclusives though. Check out the song "Vincent" by NOFX...probably my all time favorite NOFX song!

Ugghhh..........2007-02-03

There are some artists who have been active since the 60's and 70's and who are still producing vibrant, excellent music. Paul Simon, say, or Bob Dylan. Kate Bush, though she started a little later. All of these artists have evolved past their original sound but are still great.

Joni Mitchell should have stopped when she was ahead. Maybe I don't rate as a JM fan because I've only heard Blue, but I've listened to that album hundreds of times times over the years.

I wanted to find out what she was up to since then, and bought this album. All I have to say is, it was like nails on a chalkboard. I was EXPECTING her to change and grow, but not into some pale ghost of the 60's droning on about the evils of commercialism and modernism. The lyrics are old and tired, and the instrumentation is hackneyed and stale, too. The only good lyrics on this album were provided by Yates.

At least her paintings are good.

If you're looking for early Mitchell, this is not the collection for you.......2007-01-19

But if you are looking for Mitchell's more political, jazz inspired work from the 1980s on, you're going to like this collection. This is one of my favorite Mitchell albums and I have most every one of them, but if you're looking for the Mitchell you loved back when in the 70's, check out "Hits" or one of the albums produced in that time.

Joni We Hardly Knew Ya.......2006-02-07

Yes, Yes, Yes Joni Mitchell committed no felony (lucky for Joni that ear abuse isn't a crime) when in the late '70s she began her goofy journey to answer her muse, or connect with her inner self, or whatever; and abandoned the unique vocals, innovative guitar playing and literary ear that made her the poet laureate of personal angst, especially the kind whipped up by romantic love.
As an artist, she had the absolute right to do so.
So did Renoir, but he also had the self-discipline, self-confidence and gratitude to stick with Impressionism instead of wasting his glorious talent experimenting on, say, socialist propaganda posters.
Sadly somewhere along the way to the Land of Self-fulfillment Mitchell caught the virus that's killed many a talented artistic career -- pretentiousness.
One of the great mysteries of art is why so many song-writers come to believe that universal, timeless emotions like love, jealousy and alienation aren't worthy subjects for Serious Artists, when the world still celebrates William Shakespeare 400 years after he used those very themes to pen the most revelatory lines ever spoken from a stage.
It would be really adult-like if Mitchell and her rapidly shrinking band of admirers would finally quit blaming her decline into irrelevance on former fans who still pine for the spell she once conjured every time they listened to her albums.
It's what they hear now -- if they're foolish enough to buy this or any other Mitchell work the last 20 years -- that's led to her depressing fade: predictable, cliched political garbage sung like a bad imitation of Dave Matthews suffering a chest cold.

Evocative & prophetic collection........2005-11-13

This flawless collection truly takes my breath away. It focuses on Joni's largely political 1985-1998 work which incorporates wonderfully used synths amoung other instruments never used before. But the main thing that stands out about this collection (as many reviewers have pointed out already) is how prophetic the lyrics truly are. Joni is by-far one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Songs like the audio collage of "The Reoccuring Dream" written in 1988, or the harsh critique of "Dog Eat Dog" written in 1985, are suddenly even more relevant than they were back then. Transcending far beyond their original meaning beautifully. Joni is passionate about her beliefs & articulates her truths & ideas perfectly. The packaging is of course quality & beautiful as is all of Joni's projects. It's another wonderful gem in any fans collection.

Nice Collection, Good Sequencing.......2005-09-13

True, I could have compiled it myself on my audio burner from my Mitchell collection, but it's packaged well, remastered, and has, as usual per Joni, nice artwork.

Most of the songs are from the 80s - they have an 80s brightness - and they are more relevant NOW than they were then, as Joni was one of the few artists of that time to call the period for what it was - a descent into mindless greed and narcissism camaflouged with ersatz religiosity and "the guy who dies with all the toys wins" mentality.

Great stuff here - "The Beat of Black Wings", "Fiction" and the lovely "Impossible Dreamer, " one of my all time faves. Too bad "Two Grey Rooms", one of her greatest songs ever, is missing, but, heh.

Hang with the "Big Boys".......2006-11-18

This book was somehow not what I expected. Having spent a fair bit of money lately to augment my piano chops, I'm reminded of an important point that is easy to forget when my inner "kid in the candy store" takes over. Musical instruction books must do two things to be effective: 1) meet you where you are; and 2) take you where you want to go. Notice that "you" plays a big part in the results.

This book does a great job on the first point. For beginners, it includes charts and recordings of model practice tunes to illustrate concepts that it builds on. For old timers, it catalogs a long list of standards in various ways to make them easier to remember. The title is enough to turn away experts that don't need the book at all.

The second point, taking you where you want to go, is where the book falls short for me. The book does a fine job in coaching the user in how to learn songs, and apply what you learn from one song to mastering other songs. It has drills and exercises to help you master and memorize a large body of material. The ultimate goal of this book is to free the user from fake books so they can go to jam sessions and fly without a net. The author and those whose opinions he values apparently have great disdain for musicians who carry fake books to jam sessions and the author makes it his mission here to spare his readers from such ignominy.

I don't currently need that kind of help. I'd guess that not many people reach that point. I accompany a singer on piano who doesn't care if I use a book or not. In fact, he likes to throw his own fake books at me during gigs to see what we can pull off. My immediate goals are to polish my fills, comping, harmonies, solos, and left hand work. Theory books, lick books, etc. feed that need, not this book.

There is value in what this book does, and I would like to try to impress the big boys one day, but until my repetoire fills out and I need a new challenge, I can see this book taking up space on my "round to it" shelf.

Essential Took When It Comes To Learning To Hang..........2001-12-14

Remember when you walked into your first Jam session (or perhaps you're still yet to) and you were simply baffled how the cats knew just about (if not every) tune thrown at them... and in any key called... and you were thinking, "Jeez, how the heck did they do that ?" Well, this book attempts to answer that question. The answer in a nutshell is that tunes tend to follow forms... certain changes, certain bridges, and tunes with the same changes as other tunes... if you know those forms, and someone calls a tune you don't know, you lean over, and the cat next to you says, "Oh, its just * * changes..." - - The leader counts, and everyone is amazed how you were able to play it on the spot.

If you're already to the point where you understand how to play tunes - - you know your II V progressions, can play Blues, Rhythm Changes, handle a fake book, or are well on your way to it, but find yourself struggling when tunes are called, this book is might be what you need. It will break you free of simply reading chords from the book, and get you seeing where things are going - - at which point, rather than learning one tune at a time, every tune you learn will be like learning a 100 others (of course, if you hang out at the same session long enough, you'll find out that everybody calls the (...) same dozen or so tunes week after week... so maybe you don't have to memorize the basic 100 or so anyway...)

Whatever the case, if you've ever found yourself sweating on a gig or at a session, this book might be just what the doctor ordered - - and even if you're like me, and have the memory retention of a pet rock... it'll still make it easier to follow the written changes when they're thrown at you... definitely an essential learning resource for the aspiring student of Jazz !

Survival of the Fittest..........2007-05-17

I listened to samples of this music on Amazon, and purchased this on 05/11/2007 (got it on 05/15/2007 - fast delivery!). This album is nothing less than outstanding.

The other reviewers' echo my opinion of this work, I just wanted to say that this man (like Miles Davis) was years ahead of his time. I had "Man-Child" by Mr. Hancock, but with that album (as Headhunters), it would have taken me awhile to get my arms around it. Heavy stuff!! Five stars!

Survival of the Funkiest.......2005-08-17

Easily rates as one of the very best jazz/funk albums of all time. The title track "God Make Me Funky" is as funky as it gets. This is Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters", recording their first (and best) record without Herbie or any other keyboard player present, although he did produce it. This allows for more space, in more ways than one...

Without Herbie's full, dense keyboards and synths of this period, there's much more open space, giving a better opportunity to hear the individual players, all of which have phenomenal tone and chops. Paul Jackson's incredibly punchy Fender bass sound and funk technique are second to none. The great Bennie Maupin is excellent as always. Acid funk pioneer Blackbird McKnight is the ultimate electric funk guitarist, playing everything from precision wah-wah rhythms to absolutely insane effects-washed leads. Drums by Mike Clark and all sorts of heavy percussion by Bill Summers are excellent.

And speaking of "space", this is Space Funk at it's best. I mean, it even says "The best Space-Funk album" in big letters on the back cover of this RCA Victor Gold Series reissue!

Highly recommended for fans of the Herbie Hancock Headhunders albums or any of the great Miles Davis electric stuff. Their second album "Straight From The Gate" is not nearly as good, but has a few interesting cuts, and another ridiculously wild guitar solo by Blackbird McKnight.

Survival Of The Fittest.......2004-06-17

This album was one of the first albums in my record collection.The more I listen to this album the more I appreciate it.I am a big fan of what Herbie Hancock was doing at this time,and this is definitely his band minus him.I will admit that this album had to grow on me.I was just getting into Pure Fusion at this time and this album is very deep.

A Back In The Day Jazz-Funk Classic.......2001-08-08

This was the album cut by Herbie Hancock's back-up group soon after the massive unexpected popularity of Herbie's Headhunters LP. It's actually much better than Herbie's own follow-up LP, Thrust. The 1st track, God Made Me Funky, is everything the title promises, with a really great, greasy guitar riff (by Blackbird McKnight) holding it all together. One of the very best jazz-funk cuts of all time. The first & last tracks have vocals, the other 4 are all instrumentals.

Most of these tracks would have fit very comfortably in Herbie's Headhunters LP. One or two are not quite as interesting as the rest, but the highlights (including the aforementioned God Made Me Funky, Daffy's Dance & If You've Got It, You'll Get It) are way worth the price. The sound quality is first class.

If you've been disappointed by more recent Headhunters releases, join the club. This one is the real thing -- accept no substitutes.

Rich and Funky!!.......2001-06-17

In the 70's Hancock was a king. This "Headhunters" band was of a particular mythology. I own this on vinyl. It is an ABSOLUTE TRIP !!! This is something! Headhunters and Thrust had funk. Mwandiishi and Sextant had space. This has space and funk. I swear, when I was in high school in the late 70's (sucking up whatever US releases of Miles I could find) this album scared me! It is sooooo intense, psychadelic and FIRM !!! It wasn't ever "more Herbie". It was seriously KICKIN "first generation" fusion, standing on it's own, at it's best then. I'm still waiting>

P.S. I own the CD release, now, and it sounds fine. Excellent addition to the "Mwandishi" period!!! I mean... REALLY GOOD addition !!

Soon after releasing The Shape of Punk to Come (which included the warning shot "The Refused Are Fuckin' Dead"), Refused frontman and mastermind Dennis Lyxzén disbanded the group in mid-tour. But he didn't give up his mission. With the (International) Noise Conspiracy, Lyxzén continues to seek an incendiary mesh of art, revolution, and music. Great Album.......2003-01-16

I first saw The International Noise Conspiracy over a year ago at a local show. They are one of the best bands I have seen live. Dennis is great and puts on a awesome performance. I don't know how one person can have so much energy. This album is great, and I think that they deserve more credit.Every single song is good and is sure to catch your attention. For anyone who is wondering on if they should get this album, the answer is yes, you will love it.Once you develop a liking for this band, you will be addicted, trust me.

YES, good punk.......2002-03-08

SO you want punk that is understandable and has good flow and mixes different sounds not just hard pounding guitar riffs and the same drum beat over and over again? Check these guys out... hard and edgy with melodic undertones... a great expansion of Refused, you should check them out too, this isnt as hard as refused but I still dig it and think you will too if you like Refused, Bad Religion and bands like that.

the new beat.......2001-09-06

This album is a full-length hit that you can listen to on repeat. The message in the lyrics is certainly easy to grasp and take to your heart, meaning this kind of music is one that is perfect for the revolution. This is the kind of punk I'd love to hear more often!
I love artists that grows and breaks new land, and one of those artists is Dennis Lyxzen. Refused's last album was very gifted and talented hardcore that said so much in so little words, and the same talent and call for revolution radiates this album, but with even more power, even though this isn't hardcore at all. You should find out why by listening to this one. Love.

Good new political punk.......2001-08-12

Just when you think good, meaningful punk really is completely dead a group like TINC releases an excellent political punk cd. Like a lot of other reviewers have said, TINC is in the same class as Refused, Nation of Ulysses, etc. The songs have points, which they explain in the cd booklet extensively. If you like the bands mentioned above and are really sick of the explosion of mindless "pop-punk", I recommend Survival Sickness. It is a great cd from a promising band.

Finally.......2001-07-21

Finally an album which has something to say. Dennis had something to say with Refused too, but his words were overshadowed by the powerful music and the audience it attracted. Here, you can easily get grasp of what he is trying to say and I have to say it is refreshing that they get some attention. I am so fed up with meaningless lyrics and predesigned artists. This is art. This uses music as a medium in a productive way. The sleeve gives you the background of each song, what is intended etc. Whether you are a revolutionary, socialist or whatever doesn't matter. This album makes you THINK on your own a little and that is more important than anything. Oh, the songs are great, a little bit MC 5, The Kinks and some Nymphet Noodlers.
