Album Description

The Bayou's barnstorming bandleader Buckwheat Zydeco is back with his first studio disc in eight years, and he'll be on tour all over the country.

Jackpot! combines soulful original tunes, inspired playing and singing, and the trademark exuberance that's made him the world's best-loved zydeco artist, and has earned Buckwheat Zydeco the sobriquet "the world's greatest party band." There's plenty of Buckwheat's signature accordion, and for the first time ever Buck specifically features his soulful mastery of the horizontal keyboard on a three-song Hammond B3 "Encore featuring Organic Buckwheat."

Jackpot! opens with the strutting "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway" before swinging into "It Must Be Magic," a tune that leads into a string of great new songs. The sweetly funky title cut and the slinky guitar breaks of "Rock, Boogie, Shout!" are due for road tests at festivals, theaters and clubs across the U.S. and Canada during the months ahead. Zydeco fans can expect more of the rootsy boogie that fuels "Come And Get Yourself Some" and the Creole French "Old Times La La" on the album, two of nine accordion-led originals on the disc.

Jackpot! takes a surprising and very cool side trip as it goes home with a trio of tunes offering a 18-minute encore presentation of "Organic Buckwheat," reuniting Dural with his first love, the Hammond B3 organ.

Dural's venerable keyboard playing stands up to anyone playing the B3 today -- whether it's the wailing blues of "Buck Goes Downtown," the jazzy tour de force Jimmy Smith tribute "Buck Goes Uptown," or on the anthemic reggae of the finale, "Buck Goes To Trenchtown." The Hammond organ only brings Buck back closer to his roots - as he first gained renown playing the Hammond in zydeco king Clifton Chenier's legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band in the 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-11-05

I defy you to not wanna dance, or for you to stay in an unhappy mood while this Gumbo of Delightful sound stirs the pot. Give this one a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Got Me Moving.......2005-06-13

Just heard this cd over the weekend, amazing. This is a phenomenal cd, anyone who loves zydeco needs this one in their collection. Really gets you going and you just want to get up and dance.

5 out of 5 stars Must Buy For Those Who Like Real Home Cooked Music!.......2005-06-07

I pre-ordered the CD after catching Buck live in NYC thinking it would be a decent album. I was wrong. This is a great album and a must buy for long summer car trips, sweaty dance parties and to remind oneself that not all music comes artificially flavored. Must buy.

First, just cue up the 11th cut- Buck's Going Uptown. Invoking the late great Jimmy Smith at the start, Buck just rips the Hammond B-3 on an up-tempo funky soul infused jam. Is there any better summer music than this? Does anyone else play this stuff anymore? The only problem is the song only clocks in at 6:45. Can we have a real Jimmy Smith half-side version next time? By the way, very tasty guitar solo on this one.

After that gets you in the mood, go back to the album opener for some Grade A Prime zydeco. No clunkers here, every cut is great. Standouts for me are track 6 and 9 as well as the opener. Of course, the last three tracks with Buck on the Hammond are superb.

The Derailers are proud to be stuck in the '50s. Their suits, ties, boots, haircuts, even their sound, all slavishly imitate the honky-tonk fashions of 40 years ago. This theatrical, time-capsule approach to music can be a lot of fun in a nightclub, where your only competition is the bar band next door. It makes a lot less sense on a stereo, where the visuals are limited to tiny photos on the CD booklet and the competition is the readily available albums of Webb Pierce and Lefty Frizzell. Unfortunately, their songs would have been no better than album filler back in the era itself, and their competent but unexciting voices wouldn't have turned any heads either. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2007-04-27

This release ranks up there with the best Country Music produced in the 50s and 60s. Plenty of other reviewers explain what the band was about at this time, so I'll just say everyone should own this disc. Everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Song writing on parade!!.......2007-03-10

When I first saw The Derailers live in 1997 I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. Here were four guys with Telecasters, slicked back hair, boots, western shirts and a swagger that left no questions unanswered. Live they absolutely killed. I had to have the album. That's when I was amazed to find that EVERY SINGLE SONG on it was written by either Tony, Brian or both. I was positively amazed at their talent and decided that I would never again write another song until I had a chance to learn at the feet of these two. That opportunity has not come to pass and I've remained true to my word.

The only thing that keeps Jackpot from getting five stars is the production value. It does very little in capturing their true sound. With the exception of She Left Me Cold and Swan Song this album seems to lack the spark and pop their live performances have but you need to have this album for a PHd in what good country lyrics sound like.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to this album is hitting a Jackpot!.......2004-02-29

If you've liked any Derailers albums you've listened to before you're going to love this. The songs are indeed great. If you have hardwood floors, a stereo, and a bottle of gin, this CD is all you need for the perfect evening. Every song on this CD is perfect for a Derailers Dance Party. Everyone will be dancing and having the time of their lives!

5 out of 5 stars I think Buck would've done it this way.......2003-11-17

You'd swear that Buck Owens is singing these tunes. The Derailers debut shines with that good good ol' Bakersfield country sound. Unfortunately, these guys decided to turn in their hearts after their second disc, "Reverb Deluxe". They changed their style to a polished brand of country that would not not sound out of place in a retirement home or the Grand O'l Oprey. Hopefully (but don't count on it), they'll get back to their roots.

5 out of 5 stars CD, Band are great.......2002-01-23

This is the Derailers' first disc and it epitomizes fun music. If you have ever seen the Derailers live, you know that they give 150% to every show and are consu
mately professional entertainers. If you like twangy, somewhat old-timey music that played by a tight band and sung with a lot of heart, then give this disc a whirl. Sunsequent albums are also good -- this is the least polished, rawest album by the Derailers. I think that some are out of touch with what the Derailers are trying to achieve -- making high quality, fun, twangy music. This stuff is not meant to change the world or change your mind about issues of the day. It's fun music to dance to, to sing along to, and to play for friends.

    Album Description

"Like Neil Young and Beck joining Jane's Addiction or Fountains of Wayne." -- MOJO

This Sacramento four-piece, which treads roots-rock and experimental pop à la Grandaddy or Chuck Prophet, is best known for its ripping live sets and audience of faithful followers. This outing is co-produced by Tape Op magazine founder John Bacciagalupi, and his influence is noted in the odd and wistful instrumentation that defies any sort of "Americana" tag.

    1 out of 5 stars Nauseating.......2006-08-08

Chingy, one of the few people in the world that can't change his facial expression. His music is ridiculously bad, his beats are annoying, and his face alone is enough to make me want to kick his teeth in.

Do yourself a favor, and flush this turd down, along with all your fiddy cent and D4L CDs.

1 out of 5 stars Is he wearing lipstick?!?!?!?.......2006-06-11

I saw on the internet a picture of chingy rapping on stage and a notorious porn transvestite with HIS hand on chingy's crotch. Now I knew chingy couldn't rap his way out of a wet paper bag but I never questioned his manhood. Now that I saw the picture and read the article about Chingy and his transvestite lover I am so done with him. I hope the reviews he gets encourages him to find another occupation. This album is classic garbage and would be a perfect coaster for the next party you have at your house.

P.S. Iron Maiden and Sepultura are amazing and Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park suck!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debute Album.......2006-04-14

Chingy came up with this cd out of nowhere with a bang while he was an unknown member in group Disturbing Tha Peace. This is a great cd. His style is one of a kind. He has a ruthless voice in which he can write anything. This cd gets even better with some great featurings which include a classic song Holidae Inn feat. Snoop Doog & Ludacris and his first single on this album, Right Thurr (remix) feat. Jermaine Dupri & Trina. My personal favorites include He's Herre, Holidae Inn, and Juice. Overall I give this album 4 bricketts.

Remember the sequence in Casino in which De Niro's character becomes the star of a nightly talk show/pro-Mob harangue in order to keep hanging around the joint after he gets in Dutch with Nevada state authorities? Not much of that freewheeling spirit is captured on this gorgeously garish package. (It comes complete with a tiny pair of dice slipped inside the jewel box.) With main-room kings Sinatra and Presley absent from the proceedings here, the tic-ridden 1960 rendition of "The Lady Is a Tramp" offered by Buddy Greco is the kind of thing that too often passes for vocal sty-li-za-tion here. That insult to Frank--and Paul Anka's nonmythic rendition of "My Way"--aside, the Rat Pack does get props with the inclusion of the Dino and Sammy signatures "That's Amore" and "I've Gotta Be Me." In fact, the former's ur-Italian mischief keys into one of Jackpot!'s essential subtexts: the celebration of all things Mediterranean that was once a major part of the Vegas experience--Mel Tormé, Vic Damone, "Al Di La," even the bloodthirsty angst of Tom Jones's "Delilah," the best thing here and a murder ballad that Nick Cave shouldn't have missed. To think that this stuff was preferred by many parents as superior to rock & roll: "She saw the knife in my hand and she laughed no more," indeed. Too bad that so much of what surrounds Jones on this disc sounds foolish, even for those on a happy kitsch trip. --Rickey Wright

Or a lover of the sounds that we associate with Vegas. Perfect background for that cocktail party or when you just want to pretend you're leading the show at the casino. The album is a sampler of the greats who made Vegas the town it is today. Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Tom Jones, and Mr. Vegas himself Wayne Newton. Pop in the disc and take a walk down memory lane.

This is one of the Dramatics Best cds in my opinion. The songs
touch your heart and speak of hurt and love they own a special
place in my heart. When you think of the old soul groups the
Dramatics come to the top very quickly. The musicians used on
this collection of music are at their best also. I cried all the
way home and A thousand shades of blue come to mind when I think
of great musicianship. Be Delighted by what you hear on this
cd from the many songs,I am sure you will have your own favorite.

5 out of 5 stars So Good I Want to Cry.......2002-04-15

This one of my favorites from the 70's...I wore it out. Now that it's on CD, I'm wearing it out again...it's so timeless and the songs and voices are incredible...Nobody can sing "Oh-Oh-Oh yeah" like Ron Banks. And LJ Reynolds is magic as well. This duo is the only one from the 70's that could rival Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Very few groups had two stand-out lead singers. Unfortunately the Dramatics never got the commercial attention that the Tempts received, perhaps due to less crossover appeal and of course no Motown machine backing them. (I would love for them to have made a Dramatics vs. Temptations album, like they did with the Dells...)

You won't find I Dig Your Music, I Cried All the Way Home, or A Thousand Shades of Blue on their "Greatest Love Songs" Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 CD's (which are both outstanding). Buy "Jackpot" for those alone. And of course, this was where we first heard I'm Going By The Stars in Your Eyes and Me and Mrs. Jones ("sweet sweet Jones"). Cuts 5 and 10 are the weakest on this CD, and even they aren't dogs; but without them it would be a perfect CD, smokin' all the way through. Still, this one's a must-have. Another nice one is their "Dramatically Yours" CD.

All the musics are excellent, specially "I'm going by the stars in your eyes", the exotic version for "Me and Mrs. Jones" (of Billy Paul) and the AMAZING "Me myself and I" (a potential hit). Launched in 1975, I hear this album stil today ( I have the vinil record) and never get tired of hearing it...

5 out of 5 stars One of their best!.......1999-11-17

New groups can only wish for the quality, soulful sounds that the Dramatics have.

1 out of 5 stars Just a guy being used to make a quick buck off a couple songs teenager girls might like.......2006-06-17

I'm from St. Louis and have been listening to St. Lunatics tapes since the late 90's. Nelly came onto the national scene and showed the face of the midwest. Chingy is a tool being used by Jermaine Dupri to bottom feed on the St. Louis rapper pool to make a worthless rapper look the part and promote his songs big because their shelf life is on par with ground beef. Nelly is the real deal, he is what comes across in his music which has depth and truth. Chingy is a kid looking at his idols and trying to copy it. He should get on his knees and thank Jermaine Dupri every day and save every dime he makes because even teenage girls get sick of bad musicians (if you can call him that).

2 out of 5 stars Jackpot Wasn't Struck With This One [2 Stars].......2006-05-25

"Make it hop, boing like a bunny/Girl can I touch you where it's sunny/or a purse and make you give her some money..."

    WOW!

These are the type of rhymes that have been hitting the St. Louis mainstream since mid 2000. As many of the reviewers have stated, Chingy has very little or no talent at all. The 2 lines above were taken from his hit single "Right Thurr". To be honest, I bought the CD just because of the big hitting bass of that song. So when I decided to listen to the rest of the CD, things just went down. Aside from Chingy's terrible rhymes, the production is horrible also. Blame the Trackstarz for some of the short commings as in the second song "He's Herre" with the addition of Chingy's, I'd say sub-medicore, lyrics with the song makes it not all good. Another Trackstarz production is the song "Chingy Jackpot" that may be known to get people in a club onto the dance floor. By the three songs I just named, most of Chingy's [wack] lyrics have something to do with sex, drinking, or smoking. He couldn't even leave it out of the possibly best song on the CD and the 3rd single "One Call Away" a love song where he says, "...we can go puff on a blunt/oh you don't smoke, we can go somewhere and get drunk..." Intoxication is highly on his agenda. Sex is also on it too as he says on the song "Sample That A**" featuring Murphy Lee of the St. Lunitics which is ran through by a weak (and uncreative) hook. To make matters worse, the thought he could take the talent on (I'm not sure if this is really) singing on the song "Wurrs My Cash" thinking he is a pimp asking one of his so-called hoes "Wurrs My Cash?" She would have been better off with a [normal] 9 to 5 job, than working for this joke of a pimp.

But there is a sunshine through the small cracks of this CD. Chingy barely steps his lyrical content on the second single "Holidae Inn" (give it a few more years before that becomes a lawsuit), where he raps about going to a party with Ludacris and Snoop Dogg with a bunch of girls. "Bagg Up" is a song for some reason I'm liking, because Chingy pulls it together with some meidocore lyrics such as "The streets is mine, like a mixtape when an emcee rhyme..". The last song "Right Thurr (Remix)" features Jermaine Dupri and Trina was not that much appealing as the first one, unless you want to hear some verses from others.

Chingy's debut is not all that good except for those who have a taste for his style or want to hear some club or dance tracks to bounce to. Recommended for people who are exactly just for that, or just want to hear some music come out of St. Louis.

this album is the most rubbish i have heard in my life. first of all, he lacks the ability to speak english, (ie. right thurr)he is a wanna be nelly he sounds like lil wayne when he first came out. now that he is out he needs to go back in.

    5 out of 5 stars What a great disc!!!.......2004-06-03

I haven't heard every song on this CD yet, but from what I've heard so far, it is great! Chingy and Twista are like the best rap I've heard in a while. And the fact that this edition of the CD comes with a bonus DVD makes it even more worth getting!!! Recommended indeed! My favorite song on the CD as of this moment is "Wurrs My Cash?", but that could change when I listen to the songs I haven't heard. I also like the Jackpot the Pimp skit.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Magazine Review.......2005-07-12

Is it Explosions in the Sky doing Brian Eno? Or is it Múm doing Explosions in the Sky? Saxon Shore develop slow, brooding electro-inflected, P2P-produced lullabies that touch on everything from the soundscapes crafted by Eno and Harold Budd to the sublime ambience of Slowdive's Avalyn and the contemporary sounds of Ulrich Schnauss. Luck Will Not Save Us From A Jackpot Of Nothing is epic in its scope and accomplished in its presentation despite some modest shortcomings in the songwriting department. "April 14" is the strongest representation of the group's oceanic reach: icy electronics crash against a lush backdrop of crystalline sound and the rolling warmth of a synthesized lead. Things grow darker with "June 23", only to return to the clear-eyed dynamism of closer "November 16", which breaks hearts and grinds them into the ground with a gorgeous electric piano figure and synthetic vibes. And while the unpolished drum track is distracting, the organ drone that serves as Saxon Shore's angelic coda is enough to leave you dying for more in advance of the group's Dave Fridmann-produced full-length, The Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore, due this fall.

5 out of 5 stars Placerville done good.......2005-02-03

Russ Miller is hands down one of the most amazing musicians I know. He has continued to amaze me since the first day I met him when we where in eighth grade band together. I know few musicians who possess the innate talent that this man, and the musicians he plays with seem to possess. I not only recommend anything by Jackpot, I go so far as to say that it is musical genius that rivals the Beatles.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2004-06-28

These guys are just awesome. Previous cd's Shiny Things and especially Weightless are some of my all time favourites. In some bars in the Netherlands and especially at the world famous TomTom Cafe (www.tomtom.tk) they played some great gigs. Haven't heard this new album though. Sorry. I'm getting it next week.

    2 out of 5 stars More like 2.5 stars.......2004-05-26

Sacramento's Jackpot portrays failure as a beautiful thing with their third effort, F+. Sounding like a mix between Supergrass, My Morning Jacket and Wilco, Jackpot assembles a solid album of tunes to drink to when feeling down.

F+ starts off strongly with vocalist Rusty Miller grittily telling a tale of sadness and late-night walking on "Adventures Galore" and hits its high point with "Headlights," a five-minute rocker with twang.

Towards the middle of the album, however, F+ loses steam. Songs like "Euphoria" and "Dizzy" are lackluster, downhearted tales that are easily tuned out.

F+ finishes with the seven-minute "Charlie Watts is God," a Lennon-esque tribute to rock brightening up one's obsolete life.

While not quite alt-country, fans of Uncle Tupelo and Kings of Leon may find Jackpot worthwhile. Overall, F+ receives a B-, nothing earth shattering, but worth a listen.

1 out of 5 stars The CLEAN version? Yo' kiddin' me, right?!.......2005-07-25

What's this?! This isn't the clean version! They still left the word "Hoe" in there, the word "Ass" in there, and only the real bad ones are left out, but they didn't quite edit this piece of trach, as evil and rediculous as it is. Man, I love rap, but I gotta say these days it's gettin' redundant. I don't like all the same topics bein' covered over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over again. Chingy is just one of those cliche rappers out to make a quick buck with the same lyrics over and over.... You get da point. I also gotta ask, as my friend Tom asked once, is he related to T.I.?! They gotta be twins. They're identical. However, T.I. knows what he doin' in dat studio. Chingy just doesn't, I'm afraid.

Hot damn man this album iz tight! I luv this thang to the core and i could listen to it a lot!!! I like tha clean version because i ain't allowed to get explicit things so i got this and it wuz worth every penny. I recommend it to any rap fan (except thoze haters out thurr who say this stuff is pop well forget u)

3 out of 5 stars O.K. but is not my favorite........2004-06-29

Theis is a pretty good CD if you are into Chingy but if your not this is not a smart choise to buy this CD. When you first get it, it is's pretty good but after a while it get soft of old and boring to listen to. Overall I gave it 3 of 5 stars because it does have some very good songs on it but there are better CD's on the market.

1 out of 5 stars I love chingy to death, but there is no pint to this at all.......2004-05-14

I really dont understand why chingy would put out the same cd twice, one with all the curse words on it and one without all the curse words on it. with the curse words on it it is a million time better than it is without all the curse words on it. oh well. at least i own the version which does have all of the dirty words on it, because it is that much better. skip over this cd and get the cd with the curse words on it instead. get that and 50 cents 'get rich or die tryin' cd, the two best rap albums ever.

    4 out of 5 stars Okay, I was wrong..........2003-10-19

I have to admit I liked the album at first. The songs sounded okay, even if the lyrics weren't okay. But now, I have to say the album is pitiful. So just scratch the review. I'm changing it. I can barely listen to a single song on the CD.

The whole album is about sex. With songs like "Sample Dat Ass", "Chingy Jackpot", "Right Thurr", and "Wurrs My Cash", which by the way are all about the same thing, this album is destined to be trash. If he's gonna talk about sex, atleast he can do it in a good way. (See Twista's "So Sexy, and "Still Feels So Good" on his latest album Kamikaze) These are just awful!

Then there is "Gettin It", "He's Herre", "Represent", and "Madd At Me" which I can't even explain. On "Madd at Me", he's sayin that these haters are mad at him and stuff, which I understand there is a lot of haters out there. But this song is just annoying. The rest have bumping beats and all, but that's about it. Annoying lyrics, and nothing but the beats to help.

Don't get me wrong here, but there is a couple of songs worth listening to. Let's say, um, "Bagg Up". It has that laid back beat, with okay lyrics. "One Call Away" was worth listening to, until MTV and BET had to play it ever hour. It was my favorite when I first got this CD. "Juice" is alright. I like the chorus of the song. The lyrics aren't anything to brag about, but it's listenable to me. "Holidae In" is bangin'. Even if BET had it all over their programming before One Call Away, I can still listen to it. The beat is just awesome.

So, I'm sorry my first opinion might have misguided a few. So my final decision about the album is: Just Avoid This and download Bagg Up. And I learned something from this also. I need to listen to an album all the way before I review.

Also, alot of people compare this to Nelly. As a fan of Pop-Rap, I have to say Nelly is better. And before you think about getting this album, I would get "Kanye West-College Dropout", or "N.E.R.D.- Fly or Die".
