Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Sammy Baby.......2007-01-11
I have always loved Sammy's voice, and felt his singing talents were underplayed within the Rat Pack. I looked for a Sammy Davis Jr. CD for a long time and was glad to have found this one. It provides a wide range of songs; some of which were made famous by him. Best of all, it excludes the "chatty verbage" and jazzy arrangements often included in live performances that can make a song sound so dated. I particularly love "As Long as She Needs Me."
Classic Sammy.......2006-08-25
A wonderful range of classic numbers by the great Sammy Davis Jr. The only one missing, that I also love is "Mr Bojangles", but I'm sure I'll pick that up on another one of your great Cds. Thanks for the music and the memories.
ONE OF THE BEST BY SAMMY.......2006-07-11
THIS IS A FANTASTIC CD. THE FIRST TIME YOU HEAR "A STRANGER IN TOWN", YOU WILL BE SO GLAD YOU BOUGHT IT. AS USUAL, SAMMY BRINGS HIS OWN SPECIAL INTERPRETATION TO ANY SONG, AND THERE ARE A FEW GEMS HERE WRITTEN BY ANTHONY NEWLEY THAT SAMMY REALLY DOES JUSTICE TO.
He had to be him .......2006-06-05
Sammy Davis Jr. often introduced as the greatest- all- around entertainer of all time was always trying harder than anybody else. He started out as the kid hoofer in his uncle's 'Will Masten Trio' and somehow through thousands of performances, not always in the most wonderful venues he made it to the top. His energy level was about ten times beyond the ordinary.
As a singer he often shries( i.e. cries out too loud in a slightly off- tune way) but gets right into the kishkes( guts). He had such great feeling, and was projecting that feeling all the time. Some of the songs here really reflect his life. The great Anthony Newley songs seem especially Sammy at his best. "What Kind of Fool I am " is penultimate here. Sammy was always overcoming all the insults and prejudices from without, and the sense of inferiority of the little black guy within. He had what is called real moxie. And when he sings 'I've got to be me'he is not only standing up and saying an affirmative what to what he is now he is telling us all the stuff that he has overcome to get where he is.
This work was made under the auspices of Sinatra's ' Reprise records'. I always felt a bit uncomfortable seeing Sinatra and Sammy together. You could see Sammy flattering and so much wanting to please.
When he sang he sang his heart out. And at its best it is wrenchingly moving.
The songs won't relax and give you calm pleasure, but they will make for powerful feeling.
A Strong Collection, but..........2006-06-03
This Sammy collection is better than many out there, but it still lacks some classics.
Reprise recorded some of his best stuff, but Decca first recorded "Birth of the Blues," my favorite Sammy track. The collection is distinguished by "I've Gotta Be Me," Sammy's own "I Did it My Way." Actually, I like this one better than Frank's song, but for some reason time is forgetting Sammy's work.
Sammy is referred to as "underrated." He was the butt of satire and ridicule. However, you'll see that his work improves with the passage of time, and you'll be glad you bought this collection.

Sweet Charity: Sweet Memories.......2007-07-13
Listening to this Soundtrack brought back so many sweet memories of a fun time in my life - college. Hearing "Rhythm of Life" done by Sammy Davis Jr. was most memorable. This is such a fun soundtrack to play. I look forward to many years of enjoyment and recommend it to anyone who was in college in the late 60's.
Sammy Davis Jr. is awesome.......2007-01-10
I have been converting my old LP's into CD's then putting them on my Ipod. I am picky about what I put on my Ipod, selecting only certain tracks from each CD. This CD, however, I put all tracks onto my Ipod except the overture. While I find Shirley MacLaine's voice a bit weak, the songs overcome any such problems with their energy. And one of the main reasons I wanted the movie rather than broadway CD was because of Sammy Davis Jr. His contributions to this album are worth every penny.
Great Memories (better than current 2005 Broadway Revival).......2005-08-06
I saw the movie version for the first time a couple of years ago and continue with fond memories. I saw the 2005 Broadway Revival in June. Trust me, stick with the movie cast recording. Paula Kelly, Chita Rivera, and even Shirley MacLaine have a magic and zeal that is lost in the current revival. My main disappointment is that the movie soundtrack's version of The Rich Man's Frug is too short and doesn't have the best parts of the full number from the movie. That aside, who could ever top Sammy Davis' performance in Rythm of Life. Chita and Paula are beyond comparison in Something Better Than This.
This cast recording makes me wish I was old enough to have seen them during the original Broadway run.
Consider buying the DVD to the movie to accompany this DVD. That way, you'll also get to see Ben Vereen at his best. I will warn you that the movie was a bit indulgent with extended scenes whose length is not justified by their contribution to the overall film. It's about 20-30 minutes too long. But the musical and dance numbers are really great. Who doesn't love Fosse?
long-overdue reissue of the classic soundtrack.......2003-10-09
SWEET CHARITY was turned into a not-so-successful film in 1969, starring Shirley MacLaine. Originally appearing on Broadway in 1966 starring Gwen Verdon, the musical is based on the classic Fellini film "Nights of Cabiria".
The score was heavily revised for the move to celluloid. "You Should See Yourself" was replaced by "My Personal Property", "I'm the Bravest Individual" was replaced by "It's a Nice Face". The melody for "Sweet Charity" was re-jigged for a more uptempo feel. Songs cut from the score altogether included "Baby Dream Your Dream", "Too Many Tomorrows" and "Charity's Soliloquy".
Shirley MacLaine was joined by a cast including veteran Broadway talents Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera, John McMartin (recreating the role he originated on Broadway opposite Gwen Verdon) as Oscar Linquist, Sammy Davis Jr. as Daddy Brubeck, Stubby Kaye as Herman and Ricardo Montalban.
Shirley MacLaine sings her numbers with her sweet pixie-esque voice, gliding through showstoppers like "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" with great ease.
Another fantastic package from Decca Broadway. Peter Filichia, as always, offers comprehensive liner notes, and sound quality is quite good. In addition to this CD I also recommend the still-superb 1966 original Broadway cast album with Gwen Verdon.
Sweet Charity.......2003-09-14
I've been waiting for this version of Sweet Charity to come out for years. My parents use to listen to the Decca LP many years ago and the tunes grew on me. From hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, I'm A Brass Band, etc, etc Great music all around with not one bad track. Before this version I had brought the Broadway Show versions and to me they were all kind of flat. Maybe because I grew up on the film version I couldn't appreciate the show versions as much. The vocals and the scoring are great. Shirley MacClaine doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but she's still great.
My biggest complaint about this CD release is that it is not complete. You think that Decca Records would do a complete Cd release as previous musical soundtracks have done. This is a direct copy of the Lp released so many years ago. There is so much more music in this film that I was disapointed when I found it it was only a Cd of the original album. With Cd's fitting up the 80 minutes of music it is very surprising that this truncated version was released. Maybe because it's not considered a classic. This is am underrated film as far as I am concerned and in my opinion a far better score than Chicago (with all due respect to Bob Fosse who directed this film) This would be a great CD if only it wasn't abbreviated.

RED HOT + COUNTRY, in addition to supporting AIDS research, will fund a special education project which will target rural communities throughout the nation.
"Teach Your Children" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration, and "Keep On The Sunny Side" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
RED HOT + COUNTRY is the fourth album in the very successful RED HOT series of genre-specific recordings benefiting AIDS Awareness. This time it's country music's turn, and under the guidance of Kathy Mattea, numerous contemporary Nashville superstars chose a song or a style representing an influence on their own artistry. For the most part they chose songs of hope and healing.
From the opening "Teach Your Children" featuring Mattea, Suzy Bogguss, Alison Krauss, and Crosby Stills & Nash to the closing Carter Family tune, "Keep On The Sunnyside," featuring bluegrass greats Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, the entire album offers a ray of light in these fearful times.

Customer Reviews:
Sean excels with new styles.......2005-01-04
Sean Wiggins has come up with another strong album with "I Gotta Be Me". She mixes familiar styles from her earlier work with some interesting new ideas.
Songs like "Mercury In Retrograde" and "I Gotta Be Me" shine with the same catchy tunes and crisp narratives Wiggins has offered in the past. But "Lucky In Love" has a definite country and western twang. "Place In My Heart" would fit right in on a Bruce Sprinsteen or John Mellencamp album.
Sean also uses more complex arrangements on this album. There are harmonies that sound incredible. The mixes keep her vocals are out front, so you can hear her thoughtful lyrics, but the other elements, like the mandolin and cello, are clear and effective. Linda Moss returns with a harmonica that's hard to ignore.
"Anyway It Happens" is so beautiful it gives me the chills. I'm not usually much for love songs, but it strikes an incredible balance between affection, love, lust and obsession. She never ceases to amaze me with her talent for complex, compelling melodies.
Then, just a few tracks later, she does it all again on "Remember Spring"!
There are some live song introductions by Sean, but this isn't a live album. It's all studio tracks.
This album is solid evidence that Sean Wiggins is getting better all the time.
