Masters Indeed!.......2007-06-29
A classic underground release. If you like indy hiphop then you should pick up this album today. These two guys can really flow, especially when they are together. Rare album, so the asking price might be a little high. I would pay a maximum of $75 for this CD considering how well it was put together. I have had this CD for a while, I really can't remember how I found it but if you see anyo ther releases by Binary Star you should pick em up. These guys are very rare and I am still looking for WaterWorld I & II. I know alot about hiphop/rap and the underground and these guys are at the top of my list.
Bought this Album 7 years ago.......2007-04-24
I knew there was a difference between hip "pop" and hip "hop" but could never touch it, grasp it and feel it until this album.
This was part of my education of hip-hop seven years ago, where curriculum included MCs verbalizing an underground movement that to me seemed un-tangible. Before hearing this album, I'd been a big fan of Arsonists, Eminem (when he still battled), Tribe Called Quest, Atmosphere, Common, Sage Francis, Zion I and Unknown Prophets. I heard the difference in their music, there was something about how they crafted rhymes out of ideas, how they defiantly refused the mainstream, corporate-run, watered-down music I heard on MTV. They provided a freshness of ideas to hip hop and put hip hop on a different stage, a stage where rappers like Run DMC, Ice Cube and Rocksteady Crew used to step on. They brought with them a level of thought processes that only few understood, a level where poetry met metaphysics met palpable themes of love, hate, and loss.
They brought with them, a positive force to hip-hop.
Since then, Eminem hit the mainstream, Atmosphere went overground, Eyedea and Brother Ali, Hieroglyphics, Aesop Rock, Anticon, Immortal Technique, MF Doom, Mr Lif and the whole Def Jux crew hit the new underground. A movie about b-boys came out, (and I know you all are saying "but You Got Served doesn't even begin to represent the underground culture" but hey at least more people know about it than before) Scribble Jam got big, Def Poetry came on the HBO scene.
And for those who chose to believe that this is "nerd rap" for suburban white kids, there's a level of both truth and hypocrisy to that argument. Yes, this misn't fusic isn't for everyone. Yes most of the kids that listen to this music probably are Caucasian and have a need for cognition. But don't limit yourself by not try something out because someone told you "this is music for who and who." The same stigma used to be (and to an extent, still is) attached to hip-hop. The media says "hip hop leads to drugs, gun violence and degradation of women." Is it true?
You must make that decision for yourself
The truth is, all of these factors contributed to what hip hop is today. There needs to be a mainstream for there to be an underground, there needs to be big business for there to be a grass roots, there needs to be a Dr Dre for Eminem to get signed, and ultimately the hip hop movement gets passed to us and it's up to Generation Y to shape and mold hip hop for what we see fit. We are not the movement, just sparkles in the stream.
After all, what art ultimately comes down to is "honest expression of self."
Hip Hop vs. Hip Pop.......2006-12-01
I was surprised at the release date of 2006 because this was around in the 90s. Anyways Masters of the Universe is the album to buy. If you like all this gangster rap thats all over the charts now this album isn't for you. Binary Star put it best there is Hip Hop and there is Hip Pop this album is diffently Hip Hop in the purest form.
WOW, this album is sick!.......2006-10-02
Most people won't agree with me, but Onemanarmy aka. One Be Lo, is the greatest mc of all time. I think no one compares to him lyrically(his partner senim silla got crazy flow too). If you like rap, this cd has to be in your collection. On a side note, the album has too many worthless tracks without music, that is the only thing i would change about the album.

not the best available!.......2007-07-09
every true hip hop fan should already have every eric b and rakim album or cd,but for those who don't,this is not the best compilation of their work.three classic songs are missing from this "best of" collection, "move the crowd", "as the rhyme goes on" and most noticeably,"my melody",but any eric b and rakim is better than no eric b and rakim, so for the casual hip hop fan this will suffice. if you want a much more complete complilation, go with eric b and rakim "GOLD", a double cd that contains all the great hits and some not so well known songs as well!
The R.......2007-02-12
If you are a fan of hip-hop, you need to cop this album, period. Every single line that the R spits is venom. Every song on this album serves as the blueprint for any song in its genre. For example, "I Ain't No Joke" and "Follow the Leader" are the ultimate battle raps, whereas "In the Ghetto" contains the best rap lyrics of all time. Listen to what Rakim is saying in this song; it is surreal. On a scale of 1 to 5, the beats on this album are a 3. Rakim's lyrics are a 5, no quesiton. Again, if you are a fan of rap, you need to study each of these songs. Note: Rakim's songs after Eric B, such as the ones he did with Premier ("When I be on the Mic" and "It's been a long time") are awesome as well.
"Now is the time for us to react,
Take a trip through the mind and when you get back,
Understand your third eye seen all of that,
It ain't where you from it's where you're at."
Stands up after 20 years.......2006-04-11
"Follow the leader" was played over the sound system between acts at the Coldplay concert in Philly last week. I thought "Man, I haven't heard Eric B. and Rakim in years." I immediately went out and bought this disc and haven't stopped listening to it yet. This is really good stuff and should be listened to by anyone who desires a full appreciation of important music of the 80s.
Check out my melody???.......2005-10-06
Ok, I am 33 so these guys are definitely staples from my era. These guys are the orignal dynamic duo. All of their stuff was the best but this album is really missing "My Melody" That would make this album truly complete.
I KNOW YOU GOT SOUL COP THIS .......2005-10-01
Eric B and Rakim are the best the old school has to offer. Most kids today have never heard of their greatness or witnessed any of rakims lyrics. You really cant go wrong with any of the early Eric B and Rakim Albums these guys are one of my favorite old school groups next to Boogie Down Productions of course. This is ten classic songs of material from all of their albums. so if you dont got it get it. WORD

great album if you grew up in late 80s early 90s brings back good memories when you got your first car or graduate out of high school first date these are some of the slow jams you would play in the car.
Attention Class of 1991-1994, this one will take you back!.......2006-11-10
LOVES IT! I popped this CD in and it instantly brought back feelings of nostalgia. I swear the CD stayed in my car CD player and I listened to it over and over again for a week. The music on this CD are R&B classics and definitely a sign of the times. My favorite song is "Feels Good" and it's just as jammin as the time when I first heard it back in 1990. If you've been thinking of taking memory lane back to your high school days, I recommend you buy this CD today...ASAP! And this is coming from a girl who is a total rock chic - go figure!
UNDERRATED SUPERSTARS.......2006-10-09
I do not own this compilation, because I already own every CD that 3T created. This group, without question, is one of the most underrated musical groups of all time, probably due to the fact that it did not cross over. If it had, though, the music would not have been as true, or as good. I feel sorry for anyone who cannot appreciate this talent.
THE LAST TRUE R&B/FUNK GROUP WHO COULD PLAY LIVE!!!!.......2006-04-16
While, everybody was caught-up with the over hype (IMO) Bell Biv Devoe (BBD) Teddy Riley's New Jack sound, alot of other [...] acts, one hit wonder singers and rappers at that time, that all pretty much came and went, Tony Toni Tone' survived, stood the test of time, simply got better with each album/CD.
3T knew how to flip their sound, style, show true
musicianship, artistic form, originality, in which a lot of
so-called groups, that came out on the scene the same time 3T did, were seriously lacking. Of course, we all know 3T was a real, much more mature group. And, for the rest of the forgotten New Jacks? Simply put, they were no more than: "Studio creations" in which 3T was not and that's what makes them the best group to have emerged out of the late 80's and early mid 90's.
To be honest, 3T were the last true R&B, soul, funk, soft rock, retro ballad group to have come out of this era. These brothers could do it all, and on top of that, they could play instruments, perform live and were pretty DAMN GOOD!!!!
My only complaint with this CD is, I wish they could have added a bonus track, like the remix of "Born Not To Know" with the little intro sample of Fatback's "Backstroke" this version is much better than the original one featured on this CD.
But other than that, the CD is really good with all of their best tracks from the late 80's to the early mid 90's.

DECENT TRIP-HOP.......2006-12-08
I am a huge trip-hop fan and have literally hundreds of trip-hop CD's. This CD is better than average. One of the rappers sounds like DR' Octogon, who made one of the best trip-hop CD's EVER.
There is hope.......2006-05-20
I gave up on Keith and then... I picked up this album. I had the "Partners Confused" 12" and was impressed, but by the time this dropped I already moved on. Later on I picked this CD up on a whim and was given hope for Kool Keith.
Kutmaster Kurt takes up the production and brings his signature sound of hard drums and stabbing samples. No doubt the beats bang on this joint and Keith and Motion Man flow so naturaly over the tracks. A very solid listen and a breath of hope for the Keith fans that thought his only moment of greatness was Doc Oc and Ultra.
Motion Man soars.......2005-11-01
I'd have to say that Motion Man shines on this album, doing a lot better than Kool Keith. Keith is a classic, but in recent years he has lost track of himself. Motion Man has a better grasp of his lyrics and lyrical content; it is no surprise that my 2 favourite tracks are both Motion Man-only tracks: "Magnum Be I" and "Call the National Guard".
KutMasta Kurt is a great DJ/producer, his production is brilliant. The album also features several guest scratches/cuts by other DJs, including DJ Revolution. There are no guest verses from other emcees on this album.
Overall, 4/5 (but I'll give it a 5 just because). I'm not sure of this Amazon.com disc, but my one came with a free disc full of instrumental tracks.
Much better than I was expecting........2005-10-22
After all the crap i've been hearing from Keith latley (Analog Brothers, Dr. Octagon 2, Thee Undertakerz, Lost Masters) I pretty much lost all faith in Keith, but this record slipped right under my nose. I never even heard about it. It was on here for 4 bucks so I figured why not? Well, I was very pleasently suprised. It's obvious that when Kurt teams with Keith they can do no wrong. While it's far from being Keith's best, this album has sick flow and sick beats to back the flow. Keith and Motion both do a good job. There are quite a few weak tracks though, the best tracks are definetly "U Want Freestyle?" and "Step Up". These 2 tracks alone are worth the 4 bucks I paid. There are only like 3 songs on the album that are unlistenable. Which is pretty good considering the 20 some odd tracks that are unlistenable on all of the albums mentioned above. I do like Dr. Dooom alot better though. I compare because it is basically the same trio (Keith, Kurt, Motion) and I notice that there's a cut from "Housing Authority" from Dr. Dooom in one track. I find that any album that Keith has made before 2002 is worth a listen. If you see a Keith album that was made in 2002 and above, avoid it at all costs (except the ones done with Kurt). So that means I have one Keith album left to hear "Sex Style". Which is gonna cost me a pretty penny. Anywayz if your a fan of Keith, Kurt, Motion, or just plain hip-hop. Check this album out.
Album is second best...only to Dr.Octagon.......2005-03-01
I mean we all like Kool Keith for some reason. Whether it be for his 20 something years of rap service, Ultramagnetic M.C.s, Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, Kool Keith, Matthew, Diesel Truckers, Analog Brothers...etc.etc. He has a persona that can land him any rap time. I admit that his more recent albums have been...well...plain poopy, but you can't blame the guy for trying.
I first heard of Kool Keith when my friend bought the Ultramagnetic M.C.s album, but what really got me into him was Dr. Octagon. THAT was his best. I mean that album drove me bananas. Then came Dr. Dooom, which everybody SEEMED to like, but I really didn't like it a lot. It was not bad though. I LOVED Masters of Illusion though.
It showed a Dr. Octagon(ish)type of playfulness, yet Sex Style type vulgartiy and complexity. And with the ellaborate Kut Masta Kurt on the Tables of Fables, his hands were telling more haunting stories than Stephen King. What kept this album going, was the fact tha Keith had time to wirte down good raps.
Not like what he does today. I mean he released like 4 albums last year. Who is he now? Master P jr.?
He should rekindle his Dr.Octagon days, and stir us up another K.K. concoction, that will drive us insane.
PEACE

Best Hip-Hop album out there.......2006-10-28
For the most part tons of artists just babble on in all of their albums, you can't even understand what their saying. What I find great about this is that the songs are written with smooth lyrics and beats. The samples on this are a little rough but you should check them out. My top songs for this are:
1. Conquistadors
2. Honest Expression
3. Wolf Man Jack
4. Reality Check
But, I could listen to this all they way through. This is true underground hip-hop at it's best, also check out One.Be.Lo. (the lead's other alias). If you can find this album buy it.
Binary Star - Masters Of The Universe.......2006-04-12
These guys got a pretty ill style. One of my other Hip Hop head friends gave me the word on these cats and I checked this album out. They got a pretty unique style. The production on this album, some people dont like it, but why shouldnt you? It goes perfectly along with these guys styles. They way they flow goes perfectly with the beats they got on the album. Bottom line, these guys can spit! I was shocked, this is true hiphop. This kind of music gives hiphop a name. I like there kinda style, because they can spit complex lyrics and real rhymes. Respect for that. No bubblegum sh**. On the real. Since I heard that this album is out of print, meaning you can buy it, to find it on ebay, but seriously, go buy it! Its well worth it. Support real hiphop forever.

One of the best albums of all time........2006-03-19
Currently on my list of top 50 hip hop albums of all time. Production is phenomenol, lyrics/emcees on point with zero filler and never a boring moment. One Be Lo [OneManArmy] has gone onto a wonderful solo career but this album will always leave the listener wanting a Binary re-union ASAP!!!
Purchase this. Instant classic. A must own for any hip hop lover.
Oh my God.......2006-02-09
Man this by far the best all around underground album I have ever heard. It is even up there for me with Illmatic and 36 Chambers. Everything the good reviews said was right and those who reviewed it poorly are signed on competing independent labels that suck ass. Senim Silla has the best flow of any emcee I've ever heard and One Man Army is good too.
There is no filler in this album. Every track is unique, and of course ill. I just can't believe that no one has mentioned my favorite track on the album yet, Solar Powered. That ish is just completely ridiculous with the flow. The beat is always in my head.
This is the Hip-Hop album you've been waiting to obsess over.

Product Description
Traffic Entertainment Group in partnership with Strong City Records is proud to present the re-release of the Masters of Ceremonys critically acclaimed debut album Dynamite. Masters of Ceremony, whos members included Grand Puba Maxwell (who later moved on to form Brand Nubian), Dr. Who & D.J. Shabazz, had a sound that caught the ear of Jazzy Jay, Hip Hop pioneer and owner of Strong City Records. Recorded in the Bronx by Jazzy Jay himself, this album was heavily influenced by the break beat culture of the late 70s. With its dense production value and rapid fire vocal delivery, Dynamite is a perfect example of golden era Hip Hop. To guarantee optimal sound quality, all tracks have been transferred and re-mastered by Jazzy Jay using the original studio master tapes.

ONE 2DA-2DA KNOT!!.......2006-08-17
THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS ALBUM ISN'T THE LYRICS(ALTHOUGH PUBA AND DR.WHO)DEFINITELY WIELD THE MIC STEEL WELL),BUT GRAND PUBA'S PRODUCTION SKILLS.TO PUT IT STRAIGHT THE BEATS BANG FROM START TO END.DJ SHABAZZ ALSO GETS DOWN BEHIND THE BOARDS TOO AS WELL AS FLIP THE ACROBATICS ON THE 12'Z.I GOT THE ORIGINAL 4TH & B'WAY WAX,BUT THANKS TO THE HEADS AT TRAFFIC,I CAN BUMP THIS CLASSIC IN CRYSTAL CLURR STE-RE-O!NOW ITS IN HEAVY ROTATION EVERY WHERE I GO.
Rock Steady 80's Hip Hop {4.5 Stars}.......2006-08-05
I don't know what took Jazzy Jay so long to re-release this, but I thank him for putting this back out. I had this on tape, but my tape got chewed up. I have it on wax, but it's so hard to find that I don't use it so that I won't burn it out. Thank goodness for the CD re-release though. The production is pretty tight considering the time period it came out of. Tracks like "Redder Posse", "Sexy", "Master Move", and "Cracked Out" are all classics and make the album worth owning on their own. Another plus is the fact that Jazzy Jay threw in "Hard Core" which I don't have on my vinyl copy (though I'm not sure why -- it's pretty good). The whole album is a pretty quick listen though (only 10 tracks clockin' in at 48 minutes).
There aren't any wack joints on this album. Personally, I didn't feel "Keep On Moving" when this first came out, but that's just my opinion. Others will probably love it (it definitely sounds better than anything on the radio right now though).
Dynamite is a long lost and forgotten banger from '88. Of course, the beats sound a little dated, but to me that's a good thing. If you recognize one of the voices on this album it's because Grand Puba (known on this album as Grand Puba Maxwell) was part of this group before he joined Brand Nubian. I don't know of any other Master Of Ceremony albums, so I'd recommend grabbing this up while you can. It's a great piece of 80's hip hop that somehow managed to fall between the cracks and has since been all but forgotten. I highly recommend making this joint a collection piece.
Standout Tracks: Hard Core, One To The Knot, Cracked Out, Dynamite, Rock With The Master, Rock Steady (My Favorite), Master Move, and Redder Posse
I still have the wax.......2005-12-17
This was my first introduction to Grand Puba (one of the nicest emcees ever) and I had to have this record. As a matter of fact, I still have the wax.
If you are building your hip hop collection this is one of those rare must haves.
I dig in the crates so you don't have to.
DY-NO-MITE!.......2005-10-24
I remeber this album, from 1987. I was hugh fan of "Cracked Out", "Sexy" and "Master Move." The video for "Sexy" is classic. This a great representative of "Golden Era" Hip-Hop Music. For those that don't know, Grand Puba Maxwell, went on to join "Brand Nubian"...Peace to the Gods. This is an LP, that I was longing to have on CD. I still have the original casette. But, I can't bump it in my whip. Now, I'm good though. Proper Education Always Causes Elevation. Rashad Allah, real.life.words.

the dude who wrote the review under this is buggin'.......2007-05-23
on the real, this compilation is super dope. if you want to get into nicolay, then yes, buy The Foreign Exchange's Connected. to say that nicolay doesn't have real MC's on his beats is atrocious. Nicolay rounded up some serious talent for his music. Von Pea is on there (1/3 of Tanya Morgan and featured on Connected and several Little Brother mixtapes), Ilwil (other 2/3 of Tanya Morgan), Supastition, Living Legends, Little Brother, Common, Thyrday, and many more... if don't like any one of the MC's on this album, then undergrond/indie hip-hop ain't for you
Depends on what you like..........2006-09-12
I'm a HUGE Nicolay fan, but I like people with actual skills rhymin' over his beats, such as Little Brother. Don't get me wrong, alotta these cats have skills on this album (LB,Supastition,Living Legends,Common), I even liked Von Pea's joint on here. Overall though, if you don't have Foreign Exchange-Connected....PLEASE BUY THAT FIRST. You should hear an ALBUM by Nicolay with a real emcee (Phonte) before you buy this one. I'd hate for you to cop this album and say it was ...ok, and not have heard Connected...I think you'd get a better picture of this guy's prowess with the beats. My favorite joint on here hands down is the remix of "All That You Are"...one of my favorite songs from Connected. Overall, you should get this album if you already own Connected, if not....GET CONNECTED FIRST.
Good chilled interesting beats.......2006-07-20
I've just discovered Nicolay after looking for a Jill Scott tune and finding the golden remix he did (not on this album). You know how sometimes you start listening to a tune, think its good but then realise the sampling is repeated with no change and it gets boring. Well, Nicolay changes the melodies very slightly and gradually in a smooth chilled way which keeps the tune interesting and stimulating. Undergound smooth beats from superb artists like Big brother and a magical slowed down version of "come close" at the end. Its superb. Wasn't a big fan of remixes till I discovered this guy. Its good stuff.
Nicolay's soul symphony..........2006-02-28
Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange is one of my favorite producers of today. He has the blend of the old school flavor with the new soul (not neo-soul because I hate that label,) and it still comes off hard with a true hip hop lyricist. This guy is a genius on the boards and has laced up some of the best underground artists around with this mixtape. Down with the JL, Nicolay will always have a home here in the states. Waiting on volume 2, and I look forward to seeing what this cat will do next (maybe a full album project with Supastition? Who knows... let's wait and see)
Good purchase for fans of Foreign Exchange.......2005-10-09
This is a very solid cd. There is not a single bad track on the entire disc. The whole disc has a laid back vibe very similar to Foreign Exchange. If there are any problems at all, Im not sure I hear a track that rivals "Raw Life" in terms of its power to draw people in. Still Exchange fans who grew to love Connected beyond its most accessible track will really enjoy Dutch Masters. Its a very solid mix to pop into a player and listen to the whole way through. It really gives you a sense of Nicolay's sound and how he applies it beyond Phonte. On this cd we get to hear Common, Supastition, Bilal, Thyrday, and many others in addition to Little Brother. Frankly so far I enjoy it more than the Minstral Show which was a bit of a surprise to me. Its full of remixes but still filled with originality and considering the obscurity of some of the tracks they'll likely be new to most anyways. Nicolay seems destined to join a short list of really interesting producers of hiphop music.

Needs more songs.......2007-06-02
While the selection of songs is good, it does need more songs added. A couple of songs from the first two albums should have made it and the singles from the Sunset Park and NJ Drive soundtracks are some of her best work.
Coulda Been A Lot Better!.......2005-06-02
I've been a Latifah fan since '88. Therefore I was very disappointed when I saw the tracks chosen on this collection. Where's "Dance For Me", her first video single or "Ladies First (the song that got her more acknowledgement). Also "Come Into My House", "Fly Girl", and "Can't Understand". Although I think Latifah is one of the greatest femcees to bless a mic, this lineup doesn't do her any justice. And to make matters worse, U.N.I.T.Y is edited. Most of the tracks are from "Black Reign," which I do think is her best album. But still her debut album, "All Hail the Queen" should've got more acknowledgement than just one track, especially when it came out during a time when females HAD to have mic skills to compete with the men (during 80's Golden Age, you had to be tight.) For every true old school QL fan, the best albums to get are Black Reign & All Hail the Queen. Nature of a Sister & Order in the Court are good as well, but not as great. Nonetheless, this album is definitely NOT the BEST of Queen Latifah.
A great Collection. 4.5 stars needs improvement.......2005-04-12
This cd is a promising collection of some of Queen Latifah's Greatest hits. My only problem is that it is censored. "U.N.I.T.Y." is nothing without the use of the words "B!+(#" and "H0". That takes away the whole meaning of the song : Females standing up for themselves when called names.
