Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, "Steady as She Goes," which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong "Intimate Secretary" and the optimistic acoustic rocker "Yellow Sun." Like so many all-star bands before them, The Raconteurs could be one and done. But don't place the blame on this fertile and genuine debut. --Scott Holter

Album Description

The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass), Patrick Keeler (drums), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White(guitars, vocals, keys). The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was "Steady, As She Goes" and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with.

The Raconteurs mesh together so many influences on their debut that it's easy to lose track of how many there are in a given song much less throughout the CD. Aside from the bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, whose influences you can hear everywhere, I even pick up bits from such divergent sounds as Queen, (A little "Keep Yourself Alive" riff in "Hands") and ELP (Opening organ on "Store Bought Bones") and they make it work for them. This is not a White side project (as if it could be with Benson's participation) but a fully realized band with a great sound. Hopefully, this is not a one shot deal and The Raconteurs continue to record. I would like to see them further develop this sound, leaning a bit less on the past and taking a few more chances.

Indie Rock's answer to a "Supergroup". Every track on the disc should be on the radio. The most underrated and unrecognized band of the year. The band has great chemistry and passion for what they do. Incredible Live act. If you love good music, buy this NOW!

Most under talented, overrated performer/entertainer in pop in the last 30 years. Terrible album. Indulgent, completely forgettable regurgitations of the things one learns when they first pick up an instrument. I don't think the whole amateur rock think is cute at all... Terrrrrrible...

I love artists who can make a new sound from old influences, and the Raconteurs deliver on this albumn. Some of the guitar work sounds like it's straight out of the sixties, yet the songs sit comfortably among other contemporary alt-rock projects. Check this one out.

I'd heard a song or two on the radio while traveling and thought I'd give the cd a go. Fabulous! Truly these musicians enjoy what they do and each others company. Only through genuine collaboration could such a creation happen. They had me from the first song to the last. The style is definately not that of amateurs. Well produced but not to the point that it sounds plastic. In fact one thing I love the most is how they have retained a slight raw edge that was quite refreshing. I hear influences of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin but with completely fresh insight and I only hope they keep it up so I can add more to my music collection!
In my opinion, not just one or two songs but, all of them are good!

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

This CD mostly delivered what was expected of it. The only critique I have is that some of the tempos could have been cleaner, and that it should be cross-referenced by the other composers besides J. S. Bach.

This is the most wonderful collection to have on 1 CD. Children from birth on up can benefit from this musical collage.
Songs from the "Nutcracker" are familiar and comfortable for many children. What child wouldn't love "March of the Tin Soldiers?"
Selections from Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" is a must in my creative movement library. Every child should be exposed to this music. Well,I believe every age should be.

With total playing time clocking in at 78:04 minutes of music, you'll be paying about 6-cents/minute, which is a better bargain than long distance phone calls, and often more rewarding!

This disc is far superior than most other "Classics for Kids"-type recordings I've sampled for a number of reasons:

1) This album was expertly engineered. The production quality on this disc is first-rate from start to finish with crisp, clear sound.

2) The pieces were expertly picked. There is wonderful sonic variety here, spanning hundreds of years of wonderful melodies. There are orchestral pieces, harpsichord pieces, solo piano, and a piano concerto, capped off with Saint-Seans whimsical Carnival of the Animals. What kid (or adult) wouldn't love that?

3) The performances are, without exeption, expert! The pieces were definately screened for quality as well as content. Many are simply a joy to behold. Walter Klein is a particular stand-out, almost giddily prancing through Schumann's pieces. Believe it or not, he sounds even more impressive when backed up by the always inspiring Minnesota Orchestra on Mozart's Piano Concerto #17.

In short, this album is a great album even before you factor in the great price. You and your children are almost guaranteed to enjoy every 6-cents worth!

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music. Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").

If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.

This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!

This is an excellent CD to introduce children to some of the more familiar operas. I would highly recommend this CD for children and also for adults who want to become familiar with opera.

This CD is an excellent compilation of opera for children and adults alike. The operas that are represented on this disc are: Carmen, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Faust, Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly, Die Walkure, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Aida, Die Zauberflote, and Hansel und Gretel. People love the Children's March, as well as the Toreador Chorus, from the opera Carmen. The well known Toreador Song is performed on this CD by great bass- baritone Jose van Dam. Children who watch Bugs Bunny will recognize "Largo al factotum" from Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Sherrill Milnes performs the role of Figaro expertly, and his falsetto is evident in Figaro's famous patter aria. Great choruses, like the Soldier's Chorus from Faust, the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore, the Triumphal Chorus from Aida, and the Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly make appearences on this CD. The Doll Song from Les Contes d'Hoffmann is performed by soprano Joan Sutherland. She uses her voice to rise up and down, like a mechanical doll. My favorite German baritone, Hermann prey, performs Papageno's entrance aria from Die Zauberflote, as well was the duet with Papagena. Choruses from Hansel und Gretel round the CD.

My six year-old son enjoyed hearing this CD. We like to sing together, so we found many of the pieces quite alot. But to be honest, when we discovered the more recently released CD, The Classical Child AT the Opera, he went wild because all the pieces have been translateded into English, so it's much more enjoyable for us to sing along. So I would recommend it, but check out the other one as well -- your kids will be glad you did. All the best, Steven

I bought this CD for my then 3 year old son. He loved it then because it was the "Bugs Bunny" music he was familiar with from the cartoons. He listened to it for awhile then we put it away. After he turned 4, he said to me one day -- let's listen to opera, and now we listen to this CD every day. This music gets his blood going; he struts around his room when he listens to this. And, he is in every respect a typical boy who likes Pokemon and the Back Street Boys. So, I consider this CD successful in introducing opera to a youngster.

and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.

This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.

This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!

This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

Since Francis Coppola's epochal Apocalypse Now helped reinvent the scope of what a war film could be, the music of the battlefield epic has logically shifted as well, from heroic martial themes to Platoon's introspective strains of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and the fusion of Hans Zimmer's electronic-tribal soundscapes for The Thin Red Line and Black Hawk Down.

Composer Nick Glennie-Smith seems to have taken his tip from Barber, composing and arranging an orchestral score of pensive grace and quiet, dramatic power for this Mel Gibson-Randall Wallace Vietnam war dramatization. It's music that underscores the point that the true heroism of war is often more about personal survival than it is about battlefield victory. The Spartan strains of Joseph Kilna Mackenzie's "Sgt. Mackenzie" (originally written as a tribute to Mackenzie's grandfather, a WWI vet) occasionally percolate up in the arrangements, giving the score a battle-weary sense of spirituality that spans the ages. The composer's solo-trumpet denouement "Final Departure" is as emotionally powerful as it is antiheroic, leading to a gospel-infused end-credit sequence that further underscores the story and scores a compellingly human sense of scale. The talented Glennie-Smith has toiled in middling comedies and actioners for years, but this powerful work promises exceptional things to come. --Jerry McCulley

I found 'We Were Soldiers' to be an excellent movie. It portrays the emotion of what the ground pounders faced in SE Asia early in the war, to any audience. The soundtrack is faithful to the movie. Those who have seen We Were Soldiers will feel the same emotional rollercoaster when listening to the soundtrack.

Zimmer wrote The Thin Red Line with assistance from John Powell. Now Glennie-Smith writes an orchestral score for a Vietnam War drama.

"What is War?" starts with low strings then transitions to militaristic percussion and a soft French horn playing the main theme.

"Look Around You" starts off a bit emotional with low strings sounding almost funeral like with distant-sounding bell clangs. Around 2 minutes and 45 seconds, the low strings grow silent and are replaced by a ticking clock with soft, high-pitched stings and slowly builds tension with low strings as the soldiers are leaving their homes to go off to war. The track ends with high strings and soft brass blows.

"Flying High" is another good track which is dominated by vocals. A male voice sings the opening of the track then the songs tenses up with high strings and a female voice as the helicopters carry the soldiers to the battlefield.

"Final Battle" is the only action song of the bunch, if I can even call it "action". It starts with the same male voice from "Flying High" then turns into a tense, electronic percussion section before fading into a long, quiet solo of the male voice.

"Final Departure" is the most heartbreaking song. It's very mournfully played mainly by strings. It ends with a solo trumpet salute to the troops for their sacrifice.

Wonderful score. Sadly, Glennie-Smith hasn't done anything big in the States since then. I eagerly await his next big project with Randall Wallace. Until then, pick this one up with The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Great Raid. If you're fortunate enough to find it, pick up U-571 as well.

As most reviewers are fond of Joseph K. MacKenzie's tune dedicated to his grandfather in this soundtrack, I would strongly recommend MacKenzie's band called Clann an Drumma. It is really cool tribal celtic music! Unfortunately, their cds are not available in amazon, but you can order them through their web page: [...]. You won't be disappointed at all!!!

Vietnam has been considered America's dirty little war and for many is a low point in American military history. However people tend to ignore the heroic behavior of American soldiers, an idea is countered by the Randall Wallace film we were soldiers. To score this movie, Wallace turned to Nick Glennie-Smith, a protege of Hans Zimmer and the composer of the score for Wallace's first film, Man in the Iron Mask. Glennie-Smith did a fine job on that score, but his score for We Were Soldiers far outdoes Man in the Iron Mask. He brings a different look to a war film. There are plenty of military sounding drumbeats, but its the themes that are different. Rather than have a theme that is strident and bombastic, Glennie-Smith went for a combination of mournful yet respectful music bolstered by a beautifully rendered hymn. Glennie-Smith's music is great and is so well thought of that it was used during President Reagan's funeral, an apt choice I though. Overall, I highly recommend this film.

I first became aware of "Mansions of the Lord" as it was sung at President Reagan's funeral recessional, and I was tremendously moved by its beauty. I purchased the sound track from "We Were Soldiers" and found the CD to be just as beautiful and meaningful as the final track. I was able to find download print music for "Mansions of the Lord" on a download site and have used it as an organ postlude at church.

Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.

The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.

In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.

Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.

Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.

There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.

Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.

This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.
