Customer Reviews:
You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02
Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.
Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10
Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A National Treasure.......2007-07-05
This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.
Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.
If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.
Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27
The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!
Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11
I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.
Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.
Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19
Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.
Certainly worth the money!

This pairing of seemingly disparate guitar stylists remains one of the most sustained and successful musical partnerships in modern blues. Joe Kubek's aggressive approach is proudly rooted in the Freddie King tradition and that's not too surprising since the late King was an early employer. Bnois King's jazz-inflected guitar lines spice up the proceedings, effectively serving as the steak sauce for Kubek's hearty cuts of beef. The dozen original songs, including the guitar showcase "Armadillo Blues," provide graphic and uniformly entertaining evidence of the duo's potential. Kubek expands the sound a bit by adding acoustic and slide guitar, but it's the enlightened interplay with King that makes the music work. Kubek also plays Hammond B-3 organ on "Let's Stop Pretending" while Anson Funderburgh adds some guitar on "Invitation Only." King's soulful vocals, reminiscent at times of Boz Scaggs's cool groove, serve to unify and elevate the impressive instrumental achievements of both guitarists. There are very few live blues bands as consistently cohesive as the Kubek/King alliance, and Show Me the Money simply, and successfully, relocates its onstage excellence to the recording studio. --Michael Point
Album Description
SHOW ME THE MONEY is a worthy successor to Joe and Bnois' acclaimed Blind Pig debut, ROADHOUSE RESEARCH. Kubek's flame-throwing guitar work, tempered by the finesse of King's accompaniment and smooth vocals remain the bedrock of a powerful, irresistible combination. Or, as the Minneapolis Star-Tribune put it, "a rare blend of hot guitars and cool savvy, that does, indeed, smoke."

Blues Review.......2005-07-30
If you like Texas Blues with a sort of "gritty" sound, you'll like this CD. This CD didn't grab my like button right off the bat but after listening to it a couple times through and began to really enjoy the majority of the tracks.

I RECENTLY HEARD ABOUT THIS "BLUES GUY" SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK AND GAVE THIS CD A LISTEN......HE IS ONE OF THOSE BLUES ARTISTS THAT DOESN'T GET THE CREDIT HE DESERVES.....THEIR ARE SOOO MANY GREAT BLUES/ROCK-ARTISTS/BANDS THAT NOBODY REALLY KNOWS ABOUT BECAUSE THIS TYPE OF MUSIC ISN'T "MAINSTREAM"...IF YOU LIKE YOUR BLUES "ROCKED UP A BIT", THEN THIS IS FOR YOU!...HE KIND OF REMINDS ME OF ANOTHER RELATIVELY UNKNOWN BLUES/ROCK ARTIST FROM CANADA BY THE NAME OF DAVE HOLE........GET IT !
Smoking Joe brings it all together!.......2004-12-24

Artist: Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King
Title: Show Me the Money
Rating: Good
I have been familiar with Kubek's career for more than a decade now including listening to most of his releases during this period. While his guitar playing has always been above average his albums have been less than inspired. I frequently thought that Kubek's willingness to give King microphone time was a bad career move. As the human body ages eventually the voice loses its clout. So my expectations for Kubek's latest were quite low.
As a live performer Kubek usually leaves `it all on stage' but, like many recording artists, he was unable to translate that onto the Compact Disc. Well listen up blues fans because Smokin' Joe's latest, Show Me the Money, is well worth your ear time. Slicker, grittier, and with a recharged sense of melody Kubek's latest is probably more rock than trad but the heavy blues flavour remains the same.
Historically artists of Kubek's magnitude have released albums with the intent of selling them off the stage. On his latest Kubek release, if he can muster the marketing, radio airplay, and tour his tail off, Kubek & King deserve to see sales in stores.
In a `One to Ten World Where Five is Average' this is a solid seven and worth your examination
they did it for the money.......2004-08-19
sorry to say this is just an average cd.their last effort, roadhouse research, was excellent, probably their best.i bought it on past reputation but i was let down because i compared it to their last album ,which was a killer.
Smoke and fire!.......2004-07-25
Smokin Joe serves up meaty slabs of tasty Texas blues while Bnois' guitar provides the seasoning that spices up the meal. Bnois also supplues the smokin "I'm a man" vocals". Together they make up one of the best blues duos working today. Their second release for Blind Pig takes up where "Roadhouse Research" left off. Joe still is heavily influenced by early employer Freddie King and fires off salvo after salvo of red hot guitar riffs. Bnois sings of deceiful women and the joys of being from the Lone Star state. There's nothing groundbreaking here and Bnois and Joe may not even be the best at what they do. They just work well together and their albums get your south side shaking. Recommended if you like fun music tailor made for cranking.
