I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

There's not enough words that can express how wonderful Miss Jessye Norman's vocal talent is. What a wonderful opera diva! I thought the George Bizet's Carmen (CD) was magnificient but then when I got this (CD), I was thrown back. The range and style in "Ave Maria" is splendid, so is "Let's Break Bread Together," "Amazing Grace," and many more songs found on this CD. Miss Jessye Norman, Ms. Leontyne Price, Miss kathleen Battle, Miss Joan Sutherland are top opera divas on my list. So you know I have a fine taste of hearing great vocals; you can't go wrong in purchasing this CD. It's a treasure to listen to.

Jessye Norman is one of my favorite opera singers. I hope that she may release another CD of Gospel songs very soon. We have waited too much!!! How about to revisit Marian Andersons' Gospel recordings!!!

Okay, if you look at my other recommendations, you'll see that I'm a conservative. So, before my full embrace of the classical vocal artistry, and when I was just beginning to grasp politics (I'm only 21 now), I heard a beautiful voice and rejected it because it was singing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton.

I've learned a little since then. I've learned to ignore an artists political leanings, because they don't tell you much about quality (contrast the Republican South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with the Democrat Robert Redford). I've also learned to (sometimes) listen to the recommendations of friends. And well, after a friend heard me laud Reneé Fleming, Kathleen Battle, and Leontyne Price, she told me I needed to try Jessye Norman. So I did.

Jessye Norman here offers here own takes on many of the most-loved (i.e. trite) pieces in the religio-classical tradition. She renders one of my own favorites, "O Divine Redeemer", with great beauty. When other reviewers mention shivers on the spine, I can only nod. As a wonderful introduction to Ms. Norman, the great spirituals and hymns, or repudiation of foolish artistic discrimination, I highly recommend this CD.

    This pains me to say it but as a collector of springsteen related stuff, thi smight very well be the worst yet. The string arrangements are pedestrain and amateur. The melodies are discernible but it hurts to hear those favourite tunes murdered like this

    Si escuchan Beethoven y lo unen a "Coral", lo primero que se viene a la mente es la 9a Sinfonía, pero Beethoven es mucho mas que aquella y aqui una gran prueba, la "Missa Solemnis" es grandiosa, envolvente, elocuente. Tenemos para disfrutarla un conjunto insuperable Forrester, Arroyo, Siepi, Lewis, el coro Singing City y la Orquesta de Filadelfia, todos bajo la genial dirección de Eugene Ormandy, no lo puedo evitar pero los elogios para este conductor son innumerables, escucharan en este CD una obra energica, solemne pero vivaz, allegre, una misa envolvente una obra electrizante.
    Arroyo es genial y Forrester hace lo suyo para alcanzar a los demas, Siepi y Lewis en sus mejores momentos, el coro digno, compuesto hasta efusivo, brillante.
    La orquesta como siempre al mejor nivel, digamoslo sobre el nivel, perfecta de sonido claro, fortisima, sútil si es necesario, verdaderamente grandiosa.
    Esta es una misa solemne pero verdaderamente mucho mas vivaz de lo esperado, con pasajes llenos de belleza y pulcritud y otros euforicos y dinamicos cual alabanza, el "kyrie" es una introducción solemne que alcanza la euforia, "gloria" es una alabanza exsultante vibrante, el "credo" en la idea anterior nos justifica en nuestra fe, hermoso, "Sanctus" un trozo musical sublime, memorable y finalizamos con el "agnus dei" bellisimo, espectacular una pieza inolvidable.
    La "Missa Solemnis" es una obra coral sacra imperdible y esta versión la convierte en una Misa Colosal.

    A Missa Solemnis recording succeeds or fails based on the quality of the soloists. It's a given that the choir has to be excepitional, so the soloists are the deciding factor. The bass and the contralto soloists are the most important voices in this mass, but for me the contralto is the only voice that matters.

    Maureen Forrester just does not get the job done here. If you want to hear an exceptional contralto sing Agnus Die with authority check out Florence Quivar in Helmuth Rilling's recording of Missa Solemnis. Maureen Forrester sounds like an untrained novice by comparison. Florence Quivar...a command performance!!!!

    This is a very religous recording. While that is okay in its own right I simply wanted some chorus music. The recording is very well done, if you're into this type of thing.

    Wow! Considering the multitude of recordings that exist of Beethoven's greatest mass, it's impressive that one at this price stands out as one of the best. Truly a bargain, Ormandy, the solo singers, and the Philadelphia Orchestra are incredible. An excellent bargain and a wonderful performance of one of Beethoven's most spritual and moving workings.

    Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is, I think, his crowning achievement as a composer and eclipses in power and beauty every classical piece that I have listened to so far except for Mozart's Requiem.

    The Kyrie is a bit weak compared to the other sections yet Beethoven still does a good job conveying his ideas.

    The Gloria begins with an incredibly inspiring bang and ends in such a way as well. Here you definitely start to see how Beethoven's Mass is structurally much different than many of the other great Masses composed beforehand, being very symphonic in nature. Beethoven seems to really 'understand' what 'Gloria' means and does a superb job communicating this feeling.

    The Credo is the best movement of Missa Solemnis. This is how a Credo is 'supposed' to be played. It starts out sounding reasonably triumphant and having a bit of a march tempo. About two-thrids of the way through the piece the style changes drastically, becoming much faster and having a bit of an overture-like sound to it. It climaxes in an incredibly loud, rocking (yes, classicl music can be described as 'rocking') and inspiring outburst of high vocals which is, I think, is than anything I've ever heard anywhere including in Mozart's Requiem.

    The Sanctus and Agnus Dei provide a nice finish to the piece; the excruciatingly beautiful violin solo in the Sanctus is especially memorable.

    Overall, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is a masterpiece and listening to it is an uplifting and spiritual experience. It's absolutely a must to have.

    I disgree with the review of Derek Taylor only in that I think Rev. Gary Davis is the best blues 12 string guitarist ever. What is most impressive about Blind Connie Williams is the range of his vocals - from a soaring lyrical voice to a deep-blues gravelly growl to a "typical" black voice. I use the term "black" with the intent to convey the quarter-tone and glides. Add to this remarkable voice a guitar or an accordian and you get this remarkable album. Yes, I said accordian - this is the only accordian blues/folk/spiritual album I've heard where the accordian was exactly the right instrument for the song.

    His rendition of Will the Circle Be Unbroken makes the "old chestnut" come alive ... no bad tracks. If you have any interest in street blues, spirituals, folk, give this CD a listen.

    If not for Pete Welding & his Testament label there'd be no recorded evidence of Blind Connie & what a shame that would be...fortunately Pete had the fortitude to drop a tape recorder in front of Williams & preserve the performances on this disc for posterity. Connie is firmly rooted in the string tradition of his compatriot Blind Gary Davis with whom he worked the streets of Harlem for spare change during the 30's . But for my money, Connie takes Gary's innovations & brings them to another level...the instrumentation on these recordings from 61' is sparse alternating between skittering slide guitar & battered button accordion & Connie's command of both (especially the latter) is at times suspect; but his vocal improvisations on the traditional folk songs & spirtituals are truly inspired. He moves from crooning balladry to growling high pitched barks sometimes within the space of the same tune. His expert command of the material is proof of the mettle he gained through a hard life as a minstrel on the streets of Philly.

      The musical selection of this CD is certainly what the cover says, however the cuts are very short. Typically 2 to 4 minutes in length. in my personal opinion I prefer a little more continuity of content.

      This is a wondeful CD- Aaron Copland is a pure geniuos and every songs is so beautiful and perfectly crafted. I cherish this CD and listen to it all the time- none stop. I would urge anyone to buy it. It's worth it.
