5 out of 5 stars It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10

This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).

The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.

Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.

I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.

If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."

If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.

I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.

I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20

Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..

I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour

but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..

5 out of 5 stars An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17

Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.

In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.

5 out of 5 stars OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25

Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.

5 out of 5 stars It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14

I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.

This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

4 out of 5 stars Strong music on what was Carey Bell's last CD.......2007-07-22

Listening to and watching Carey Bell's vigorous vocals and harp playing on a new CD/DVD he share with his son Lurrie, "Gettin' Up Live" (Delmark), one will be astonished to learn that Carey had suffered a stroke, fell and broke a hip weeks before and yet still appeared at Rosa's a few days after leaving the hospital. This new recording/ video captures the two at Rosa's in July, 2006 and at Buddy Guy's Legend's in October 2006, along with some intimate performances at Lurrie's home the day after the Rosa's performance. With strong supporting musicians for the band sides and the empathy they demonstrate whenever they perform together, the Bells have produced both a strong CD and a delightful DVD. The CD has 4 performances from Rosa's, Legends, and Lurrie's home, while the DVD adds two performances from Rosa's. The band selections are excellent with Roosevelt Purifoy certainly adding solid keyboards in support and the bass drum duos of Bob Stroger & Brian `BJ' Jones or Joe Thomas & Kenny Smith keep things going. Scott Cable joins on guitar on Lurrie's vocal at Rosa's (a solid Baby Please Don't Go) and the Legends' performances. Carey is first heard on Junior Wells' What My Mama Told Me, which is appropriate because Bell's vocals evoke Wells. "Gettin' Up" is one of those funky blues Carey was effective at, while at Legends he does a couple of Little Walter numbers along with his "Low Down Dirty Shame." In addition to Bell's vocals and really solid harp, Lurrie is marvelous with his mercurial guitar playing recalling some of Jimmy Dawkins' equally fiery accompaniments on Carey's first album over 35 years. Lurrie has really emerged as one of the finest blues guitarists, especially as an accompanist with suggestions of Dawkins and the equally individualistic Hubert Sumlin. Despite the flash and sizzle of his playing, he never overshadows his father's performances, rather his embellishments and solos strengthen these marvelous performances. Carey handles three vocals at Lurrie's home in the more intimate setting including John Estes' "Broke and Hungry," and J.T. Brown's "Short Dress Woman," before Lurrie closes things out with a heartfelt traditional gospel number, "Stand By Me." The two songs on the DVD not on the CD are older Bell recordings although honestly are a tad bit weaker than those on the CD. The video on the DVD is simple and straightforward and all the more effective for its focus on Carey, Lurrie and their band. No claim that this is the best either has ever done, but this still is a first-rate disc of Chicago Blues that is highly recommended. Enjoy.
This was written prior to Carey's death, and having enjoyed him on disc as well as live over forrty years, I will miss him as will all blues lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04

Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.

The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)

All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06

Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08

I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.

Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.

If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.

But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...

This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31

Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29

This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

I recently recieved this as an Easter gift. The format that Amazon descibes isn't exactly correct. They say this is live, when the CD is not, but the DVD is. I have owned 4 copies of this disc since it came out in '01, because I played them to death. This is absolutely worth the money. Plus, if you're an Alice In Chains fan there is a little bonus. On the live DVD, Nickelback+Jerry Cantrell perform "It Ain't Like That", a song off of Alice In Chain's "Facelift". I highly recommend this live DVD+CD set, it's one of the best.

It would be impossible to overstate Abe Schwartz's influence on the development of klezmer music in America. He was a fine violinist and pianist, an excellent composer, an arranger who added modern instruments like saxophones and banjos to the Old World sound, and a bandleader with a nose for talent who helped launch the careers of Dave Tarras and Naftule Branwein, among others. The Klezmer King collects 25 tracks from the 75 or so sides that Schwartz recorded for Columbia between 1917 and 1935. Schwartz was remarkably versatile, and the selections include traditional dance tunes like "Roumanian Doina," Yiddish pop tunes such as "Die Greene Cousine," which was later a hit for Benny Goodman as "My Little Cousin," and sly social commentary like "Der Automobile." Also here are three versions of the old melody "Russian Sher," which were recorded in 1917, 1927, and 1935. Listening to them, you can trace Schwartz's style as it evolves from its European roots to a more American version of klezmer. The sound quality of these rare recordings is outstanding; there are almost no clicks, pops, or hiss to mar the music. The Klezmer King is an essential recording from one of the pioneers of New World klezmer. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars Old-Time American Roots Klezmer Music.......2004-04-15

Abe Schwartz and his orchestra developed and defined klezmer music in America from the mid-1920s up until the 1940s and early '50s. If the beginning sounds of American roots klezmer music is of interest, this is the CD you want. I find that half-way through, my mind wanders. It sounds too schmaltzy for me. I love Central European and Balkan style music ... this CD has diluted versions of this styling. This CD contains Central/East European "cross over" music that is becoming Americanized. In reality it is not quite either, besides the violin, there is the requiste clarinet, other instruments are saxaphone, tuba, piccolo, alto sax, bass sax, drums, and other percussions. The music occasionally sounds like a Balkan Brass band ... fortunately the longing and nostalgia of the klezmer sound, the Jewish roots are evident in all the tracks. The 'sher', 'doina', and 'hora' are types of dance music played by this famous composer, bandleader, and fiddler. My favorite is "Escorting the Parents of the Bride and Groom Home" ("Fihren Di Mechutonim Aheim-Tanz') which features Naftule Brandwein on the clarinet. His improvisations and glissandos are brilliant. The famous klezmer clarinetist, Dave Tarras, is also featured on many of these recordings. "Hasidic Melodies" ("Ch'sidishe Nigunim") is one of my favorite examples of his playing. His command of the clarinet and the creative musical phrasing is phenomenal. "The Greenhorn Girl Cousin" ("Die Green Couisine") is famous for the music, lyrics, and message which brought to the public's attention the bad working conditions in the sweatshops, the first job of immigrants arriving in the USA. It is a catchy tune with Abe Schwartz featured on the violin and Abraham Moskowitz singing the vocals. Spin-offs of this song were written by many including one by Benny Goodman. Overall, if discovering and investigating early klezmer roots music is your goal, this CD will meet your criteria with highest expectations. Otherwise, give me "The Klezmatics", "The Klezmer Conservatory Band" or any modern klezmer group which expresses the music in a more explosive and exciting manner. For me, the modern sound is much more appealing than the early roots which is on this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

4 out of 5 stars Joy, Joy, Happy, Happy.......2004-02-05

I came to Klezmer music via Izaak Perlmann's "In the Fiddler's House," which is one of my all time favorite CDs. I'm just learning about the genre, via other Amazon reviewers, so have just recently arrived at this and other "Klezmer roots" CDs (Dave Tarras, as another reviewer mentions, is also excellent). It's just exceedingly harmonious, well orchestrated, tightly knit music, transported from the old world to the new. The tradition lives on, and an increasing number of us goyim are coming to appreciate it. Sound quality, these can't compete with modern recordings like those of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, or the Klezmatics, but it will definitely give you an idea of where they learned from. Mazaltov!!

4 out of 5 stars Close your eyes and you're at a Jewish wedding.......2003-03-31

If you've ever heard new groups like the Yiddish Cup Klezmer Band and The Klezmatics and marveled at how they got all those great old tunes, look no further. Abe Schwartz, the Klezmer King is now available on CD. Before this, 78 RPM records these were remastered from was the only place you could hear him.

The Klezmer King album is old, both in sound and style. But keep in mind that clarinet klezmer is more of an American thing. This music is a generation or two removed from the original originals. Songs called Russian Sher and Roumanian Doina indicate that, just like today, wedding musicians from the old country were jamming the hits of the day as well as the "Jewish" stuff.

But it was guys like Schwartz, Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers, whom the new wave learned from. But unlike the younger versions, these melodies don't seem to have jazz-like improvisation. They are straight ahead rollickers, heavy on catchy rhythm and melody. There are a total of twenty-five tracks on the album and most are short and fast.

The instruments employed are the violin, played by Schwartz, the clarinet and horns. The beat is so danceable that you forget there's no percussion. That's traditional, because back in the old country, if the klezmorim had any percussion at all it was just a bass drum.

For you Yiddish speakers, The Klezmer King is not all instrumental. There are tracks that start with lively shouts as well as straight singing pieces like Mameniu Liubeniu or the satirical Hurra Far Unzerheld Levine.

Then there's Die Bolbriker Chasseneh, which has Schwartz introducing a bride and groom in between slow music. He raises his voice, half speaking and half singing in rapid-fire Yiddish. Then he gasps out that the couple is now officially married and the band breaks into fast, bouncy jamming. Close your eyes and you can imagine you're one of the guests. That goes for most of the tunes here.

If you didn't know the difference between a bulgar and freilach and nigun before, you better start learning. Abe Schwartz taught long of young folks about what it takes to be a king of klezmer. Companion CDs of Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers are available from Legacy Recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Time warp.......2002-08-11

Listening to the 25 old but timeless cuts on this set of remastered Yiddish greats provides many layers of enjoyment. In hearing these long-forgotten tunes, one enjoys clarinet and violin strains influenced by ancient melodies and traditions. And some will recognize varied renditions of old favorites. The 6th cut, for example, Dovid'l Bazetzt die Kalleh, is engrained into my memory from Jewish Music, a Benedict Silberman recording, circa 1955, of Yiddish orchestrations.

The music is all decidedly Eastern European. The Roumanian Doina, for example, played by Abe Schwartz (violin) and his daughter, strongly resembles the brilliant Rom music generated by the same region.

No wonder. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Abe Schwartz (1881-1963) emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1899 and became the most influential composer, fiddler and bandleader to shape and define modern U.S. klezmer groups. He arrived in the musical establishment via an acquaintance from small jobs with David Nodiff, a part-time composer and so-called A&R (for artist and repertoire) man for Columbia Records, who helped bring klezmer and other ethnic musicians to record companies. Nodiff hired Schwartz in 1917 to find new Jewish talent and head up instrumental recording sessions.

This recording provides some of the time and style progression of Yiddish American music from 1917, when Schwartz recorded Russian Scissors for Columbia with the Oriental Orchestra. In 1927, he recorded the same tune again as Russishe Shehr, in a brassier rendition played by his own orchestra. Still a later 1935 version can be heard in Russian Sher National Dance, the 22nd cut, recorded with the Orkestr Novinka. (And that is the most recent recording here.) The musical and stylistic progressions from 1917 and 1918 through 1935 are admirably explained in an accompanying 8-page pamphlet.

This is not the jazzy stuff many will remember from the 1940s and 1950s. It came before the Barry Sisters, before Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras. Abe Schwartz was their mentor.

What you get here is a time warp, filled with early 20th century Jewish musical genius. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05

If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17

This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11

Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.

2 out of 5 stars New version available in UK.......2006-02-18

This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.

4 out of 5 stars Despite the limitations, a collaboration of giants.......2007-01-16

Imagine Rembrandt and Picasso creating a painting together. Or Hemingway and Dostoyevsky writing a novel. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird on the same team. Marlon Brando and Laurence Olivier in the same movie. Sounds amazing, right? Makes your mouth water? Well, now imagine looking at the painting from half a football field away. Or that the ink on the novel is all smudged. Or that Johnson and Bird are great, but playing back in the 50's, and TV color is both black, white, and grainy. Or that the movie's on VHS, and the tracking just isn't right on your VCR. A little bit disapointing. But still, those partnerships, those partnerships! How can you resist? You can't. Nor should you resist this amazing find.

To be sure, it's probably only for enthusiasts of either man...maybe only completists. But both men died so young that any surviving recordings (ANY) must be gobbled up like manna. It's certainly not fit as an introduction to either, but for genuine jazz collectors with an appreciation for the significance of such an event. There are technical limitations galore on this artist-made bootleg, but props to the production team that frankly admits to them. The engineers have cleaned up the sound as best they could, but remastering is obviously out the of the question. The sound is distant and blurry, with George Morrow's bass all but inaudible. The horns are close enough so you never miss a note, though the lack of clarity to the sound can be frustrating, and one wishes for more drums especially. On the other hand, the piano is satisfactory, even for a bootleg. There's no denying the quality of the sound, though: bad.

Still, the music is first-rate, albeit somewhat rehearsal quality at times (which is exactly what the occasion was.) But the prospect of Dolphy and Brownie, and with Max Roach, Harold Land and Richie Powell to boot, is just too one of a kind, too previously only-in-your-dreams, to pass up.

Dolphy only plays on four tracks, Roach and Powell on two, and Brownie is on piano half the time (though that's a find in and of itself) but the artists involved are such geniuses, such giants, that hearing them together, just knowing that they ARE together, is a consistent thrill. The music itself is straight bebop, with long solos, goodly tempos and a lot of exploration. Dolphy is still very much in thrall to Charlie Parker here, but already with a technical prowess to put most others in the shade. His harmonic innovations are already becoming apparent, and his phrasing - unique in all of jazz - is mostly in place. At this point, Brownie is certainly the superior of the two, as well as the more polished, but one has to wonder why he and Roach didn't hire Dolphy to be their saxophonist. He's certainly more advanced than Land (for all the latter's greatness) and would have been a genuine asset to the band, both in terms of ability and temperament. One can only deal in might-have-beens. But thanks to this great find, we can now get a great glimpse into what might have been.

3 out of 5 stars Dolphy Bootlegs I.......2006-03-17

I give great credit to the tasteful and honest people who released this set, as it states right on the jewel case that these are "rare live recordings - only for collectors." The sound quality is indeed coarse (though still quite listenable for those of us who wish to listen), and in fact Eric Dolphy appears on only four of the seven tracks. What is perhaps even more noteworthy is that Clifford Brown, one of the most famed trumpeters in jazz, switches over to piano on three of these numbers - and DAMN, could he tickle those ivories! The presence of drummer Max Roach on two tracks, and tenor saxophonist Harold Land on four, would also seem to add much to this disc's appeal, though it is mentioned neither in the title of the CD nor on this Web page.
Anyway, technical minutiae and personnel specifics aside, this is indeed a rare and precious fossil for my fellow Dolphanatics and me: the only known recorded notes we have from the man between his 1949 debut session with Charles Mingus and his first Chico Hamilton Quintet performances nine years later - and look who he's jamming with! The extended explorations which dominate this disc are more than worth the investment in time and money for serious fans desperate for any "new" release from these gentlemen; just be aware that this is a decidedly in-the-raw offering all around (though by way of compensation, one which clocks in at a generous seventy-one minutes and change). If you don't already own every official Eric Dolphy release, you're strongly urged to complete your collection before indulging in this and/or the various other verite curios out there; the initiate, however, need have no fear.

5 out of 5 stars Homesick by JJW over GPN...I don't think so!.......2004-10-03

The California reviewer who rates Jerry Jeff's London Homesick Blues over GPN's version should take the wad of wax out of his ear. Jerry Jeff is great, but for musicality and truly great listening, you either go with GPN or you GET THE HELL OUT OF THE ROOM!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Gary P........2003-08-11

This recording defines the broad spectrum of Gary P. Nunn's ability as a front man (chalk up much of JJW's early success to Gary P. and the Lost Gonzos), not to mention his ability to craft songs that put you right smack dab in an inner tube on the Guadalupe River. The Lone Star anthem "London Homesick Blues" notwithstanding, these live renditions of some GPN classics such as "The Nights Never Get Lonely," "What I like about Texas," and "Austin Pickers" are probably the best live versions out there. In addition, the recording contains a HOT rendition of the JJW/LGB standard, "Public Domain." All in all, a classic and timeless recording and a rare release from the vaults of Austin City Limits and KLRU. A vinyl collectible, but a CD treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Gary P. Nunn - TEXAN.......2003-06-01

How could someone from California review a Texas Country album? That person has probably never been to Texas and wouldn't know what great music is if it hit them in their bean sprout eating head. Gary P. Nunn is known for great music. All you California people should stick to Toby keith, he's more your speed. Get this CD, you will not be sorry, that is unless you're a Rascal Flatts or N'Sync fan.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better.......2001-10-11

I grew up with this album in college in the eighties. Gary P. played a lot around San Angelo, Tx and he is the real thing, or was at that time. I find it to be the best true to itself album around. It is a folk/country/eclectic/hillbilly rock album that may not work for the California reviewer, but it's just right for me. My favorite is Tennessee road which is about Elvis. Then there is "the Last thing I needed the first thing this morning". Really great stuff! I am only mad at myself for not listening to it in a couple of years. I am going to end this review right now so I can go put on the scratchy ol' cassette that's been played until the you can't read the title.

2 out of 5 stars Not the real thing.......2000-08-21

Unfortunately, GPN without Jerry Jeff Walker is kind of like Paul McCartney without John Lennon - he needs Walker's raw and powerful counterpoint to balance out his own maudlin tendencies. Nunn's London Homesick Blues is of course an incredible classic. If you don't already have it, get the original on JJW's Viva Terlingua, one of the best progressive country productions of all time.
