Once upon a time, hip-hop was about having a good time and (brace yourselves) getting down! The Black Eyed Peas are bringing that mentality back to the future. They reinvigorated blasé dance floors and seduced discriminating heads with their debut, Behind the Front, and they do it again on Bridging the Gap. In the open-minded old-school tradition of producers like Afrika Bambaataa, the album is diverse and delicious, a grab bag of influences from reggae to drum & bass and beyond. Songs like "BEP Empire," produced by Gang Starr's notorious DJ Premier, give the Peas a harder-edged beat to roll with, which they rock rapturously. Then "Weekends," featuring Toronto down-tempo diva Esthero, is a fun dance floor number. And these two tracks are just the tip of the iceberg. Bridging the Gaps is a listen-all-the-way-through album. Every drum roll is vivacious, rollicking, and the judicious sample choices meld beautifully with the organic beats. Similarly open-minded, talented guests such as Macy Gray, De La Soul, and Mos Def also stop by to bless the mic. As James Brown would say, "Get up off of that thing, and dance 'til you feel better." --Lizz Mendez Berry
Customer Reviews:
Great album.......2006-09-09
Thank you BEP for your first two albums. They are classics and can be played forever. As for the pop albums, Elephunk is wack and Monkey Business is incredibly mainstream but well done. You made it brother's and that's all that matters, right? Wrong. Get back to being real.
Before Change, Emphasizing Love for Hip Hop.......2006-08-06
In their second album, Bridging The Gap, Black Eyed Peas emphasize their love and commitment to hip hop more than they did in the previous album--opening with "This is the hip hip hip, the hop hop hop" ("BEP Empire"), then making a twisted homage to Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" ("Go Go," which may be the album's most unforgettable track to long-term hip hop fans), and listing names of hip hop giants ("Rap Song"). The excess may get some audience's nerve, knowing their directional change afterwards. Guest appearances of Primo, De La, and Mos Def prove the scene's positive reaction to their debut, though none of them does remarkable job here.
Better Then...Forget Now.......2006-07-15
Before THE BIG SELLOUT, B.E.P. were a very enjoyable hip-hop combo along the lines of De La Soul (jr.).
Their early stuff is fun, creative and INTELLIGIBLE.
Lately they've become the mass-media posterchildren for Old Money to point to and say "See WHY those BLACKS don't deserve equality?!!! JUST LOOK AT THEM !!! HE'S JUMPING AROUND LIKE A MONKEY , BARKING LIKE A DOG (oh look at the white girl I guess she's sexy that'll sell records!) THAT's WHY hah hah ha"
AT least they USED to make decent records.
And I thank them for that.
It's just too bad they lost faith.
Close to a classic .......2006-01-25
Man this is what I'm talking about. This is the kind of BEP that i used to love before they turned to the mainstream life. I got this album as a Christmas gift last December and I'm quite thankful to have it in my collection. The lyrics on here are really stellar and the production is amazing. Real Hip-Hop still exists in society but people fail understand that. Easily the best BEP release besides "Behind The Front".
THIS IS THE BLACK EYED PEAS.......2005-12-12
THIS IS THE HIP HIP THE HOP HOP HOP, THEY KEEP IT KEEP IT GOIN NON NON STOP, BLACK EYED PEAS THEY KEEP IT MOVIN'.......LISTEN TO THE FIRST TRACK AND IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE. THIS IS THE BEST OF THEIR ALBUMS. MUCH BETTER THAN THE MORE MAINSTREAM ALBUMS ELEPHUNK & MONKEY BUSINESS. GREAT LYRICS, GOOD BEATS, AND IT JUST FLAT OUT SOUNDS GOOD. WORTH YOUR MONEY.

Bridging the Gap & Testimony CDs.......2004-10-03
This is my favorite CD in the house! Why this outstanding soulman is not played more often in the past years on ANY radio station in Canada & US, is beyond me!!!He deserves many golden awards for his high quality voice & style!
TESTIMONY was bought for under $3.00 at a Walmart store here in Canada! THIS CD ROCKS JUST AS MUCH AS THE NEWER ONE! THE GAP BAND & CHARLIE ARE THE BEST OF THE OLD SCHOOL ERA, 90'S & MILLINNIUM TO PARTY TO!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CHARLIE & GAP BAND!
WE NORTHERN CANADIANS LOVE YOU!
outstanding!.......2002-12-10
Where has Charlie been hiding? I love his voice! This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a while. It's definitely on my top ten list. Charlie's vocals coupled with very talented background singers and exceptional musical arrangements gives this CD five stars without a doubt. The songs are beautiful! Love, love, love just oozes from this CD...I highly recommend it!
'Absolutely' Amazing!!!.......2002-03-29
I don't understand why Charlie Wilson was never that popular. Some of his songs, like 'Absolutely' have #1 potential, and I don't know why he never released them. When I first heard 'Absolutely' I fell in love with it, and 'Without You' is a nice, slow ballad. If you're thinking of getting this album, believe me, you WILL NOT be let down. It is amazing - much more than I expected having only heard a couple of his songs.
In a couple of words - BUY IT!!!!!!!!!
Outstanding, boy you knock me out...!.......2001-08-21
Long time Gap band fan, since high school days in the 80s. Now that I'm 30 something, really enjoying the vocals of Charlie Wilson's, skillful, mature and smooth vocals [he was doing vocal runs before they became a fad! :-)] to mellow tunes. Reflections of classic "Soul" music with a touch of contemporary R&B. Add to your collection. I have. Enjoy.
You can listen to this one the whole way through!.......2001-08-17
I love this whole CD. There are not many CDs around that you can listen to all the way through. I have my favorites, of course, like Without You, Can I Take You Home, and Come Back My Way, but every song is worth listening to. I know he may sound like the "old guy in the club" at times, but Charlie is an original playa and he's just living up to that image by being very straightforward and letting the ladies know what he is about. I relate to many of his songs and appreciate the things he has to say. I recommend this CD to R&B old/new school lovers everywhere.

Bridging the Gap.......2005-02-17
this is great with nas and his dad doing this cause it sounds good and hasn't really done before by anyone. the chorus is:
I was born In Mississipi I was young and runnin wild
when I moved to New York City
And I had my first child
I called the boy Nasir
All the boys called him Nas
When he was young I told him
He'll be the greatest man alive
Yeah this is a dope track and Nas fans'll like it. All of Nas music is good and he is one of my top 10 rappers
Curtis and Nasir Jones.......2004-11-05
There collabo where both of them perform vocals.Curtis alias Olu Dara does the hook to perfection and even does a better performance then his son Nas. The album comes out in 28 Days.
Brilliant.......2004-10-06
This is a perfect example of how rap music should be done. "Bridging the Gap", the 2nd single off Nas' upcoming album, "Street's Disciple", is a mix of blues and rap, and it works to perfection. The harmonica-based beat is reminiscent of the Outkast's "Rosa Parks", and Nas' flow & lyrics are on-point, as usual. Nas even has his own father on the hook. "Bridging the Gap" even has a little bit of radio appeal, and will definately be making "Street's Disciple" a hot commodity when it finally does come out.

Oh Jeez-Here We Go Again!.......2005-01-30
Here's a familiar story:an 80's era funkster goes right for the New Jack swing jugular and fails to attract the attention of the young listeners. Why?Because they sounded great to start with and didn't need to pander to teeny boppers. What makes Roger's album better then most?He married the style to decent songs and didn't really overdo the new jackisms. So enjoy this if you can get a cheap cutout.Otherwise stick with his classic 80's solo albums and his Zapp material because those are classics-the FAR lamer Zapp V not withstanding of course.

Somebody who knows!.......2005-11-23
Im a cat who attended Langston University when Charlie was there, and even then it was clear that he was going to be a musical talent that wasnt going anywhere soon! The entire cd is "tight", and well worth your investment. As we said then..."right-on, Charlie, right-on".
ONE OF THE BEST MALE VOCALIST AROUND.......2005-06-21

No one does it better........2003-10-07
Just when you think music gets damp here comes the Gap man himself to heat it up.I honestly can say this is a collectors item a rare gem in the music industry. The song Without You has to be the most beautiful song ever made.Charlie Wilson's voice is so smooth and sweet it can melt your soul whether your a man or woman.Anyone who wants a break from the fake soul singers and want a taste of sweetness buy this you wont be sorry.
The Gap has been bridged.......2003-02-28
I got this cd shortly after it came out and while checking to see if he had anything new coming out soon...I decided to write this review to give major props and respect to this man's work. I grew up and was graced with hearing songs by The Gap Band and fell in love with Charlie's voice. I heard it again throughout my years in other compilations including "Pretty Lady" with Mint Condition (Life's Aquarium). I heard "Big Pimpin'" and sat in aw as I heard this gorgeous voice tear every line up- and the presence of the all-star Snoop Dogg only made the song more of a hit to me. I quickly went out and got "Bridging the Gap" and was immediately impressed from the first track.
"Come Back My Way" will always be one of my favorite songs...it's simply gorgeous and I think just about anyone can feel and relate to the lyrics and honesty of the track.
For anyone who is skeptical about this cd-maybe thinking it will be a bad Gap Band comeback...don't think twice about it- this is truly soul at it's finest.
Uncle Charlie.......2003-02-06
Man look, this man clearly has one of the most distinctive voices in the industry coupled with the most lackluster record label. It pains me to see that he did not get the accolades as that a non-singer like Ashanti got. Clive Davis, I hope you read this and sign Charlie Wilson to J-Records. I guarantee you he will go at least double platinum when you give him some name recognition and up to par producers such as Rodney Jerkins.
