5 out of 5 stars "If heaven exists, he'll be playing at the gates...".......2006-03-09

If heaven really exixts, Reverend Gary Davis will be playing at the gates to welcome us all in. Man!! Only a blind man could finger a guitar the way this man did. At some point the material becomes secondary to the performance of this incredible gifted musician and singer. This is music from the very core of one's being. Though there isn't a bad cut on the album, my favorite's are "Let Us Get Together" and "I Belong To The Band," to mention a few.

This is the music that influenced some of the greats, I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars "Blues" finds its hope in "Faith" via blind guitarist..........2003-01-05

Gary Davis was born blind, black, and broke in South Carolina in 1896. Big obstacles, but he also was blessed with talent and got paid for his guitar-pickin' by the time he was a teen. Ordained as a minister at age 36, he changed his song inventory to Gospel and hymns exclusively. He ended up in NYC, performing at mostly Black churches and on the streets. In the late '50's, the "Folk Revival" of blessed memory provided him a brief celebrity beyond those venues. This album was recorded in 1960 at the Jersey jazz studio of the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. You get 44 minutes of soul survival stuff here, and any blues buff ought to own it. The more casual fan may have to listen a few times to really like Gary's vocals, but his guitar work is fun from the first chord. The recording quality is excellent. To me, the only flaw is that each song would have benefitted from one fewer sung verse, and one more instrumental passage. It's not that Gary's voice is any more rough than other bluesmen. The problem is that the lyrics of these church songs belabor the point and get a bit repetitious. Still, he was one of the best of his kind. Imagine him at 64, alone in the recording booth for three hours, doing 20 songs, of which these are supposedly the best takes of the best 12. He had not recorded anything in four years: in fact, he had only recorded in 1935, '54 and '56 prior to this August 24, 1960 session. On that day, Kennedy and Nixon were running for president, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Yankees were heading toward a classic World Series, and I was living about 40 miles south of the studio, getting ready to begin 11th grade. Rev. Davis was doing something more important: preserving the Black church songs of early 20th century for posterity.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Davis Introduction Available.......2001-07-21

My collection includes all of The Reverend's recorded works. If you are going to buy just one Davis disc -- or if you are looking for a good introduction to this Blues/Ragtime master, "Harlem Street Singer" is unquestionably the best choice. The recording captures Davis at his most passionate vocally and at this top of his game as a gutarist. A lot of his early work suffers from poor recording technology, however this disc sounds like it was cut in a 21st Century studio.

I'm not a religious person, but Davis' music is almost enough to send me running to church. The piercing conviction of the lyrics and sycopated guitar in Twelve Gates, Great Change and Samson and Deliah still send chills of guilt up my spine.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets........1999-09-06

If you enjoy both blues and gospel music, you will discover on this CD that for Reverend Davis there is no distinction between the two forms. Samson and Delilah and Death don't Have No Mercy were tunes that influenced The Grateful Dead and other Rock bands, but here you get the full, original impact of these songs.

Reverend Davis was without question one of the greatest blues guitar stylists ever, and this album captures some of his strongest recorded work. The importance and beauty of this recording cannot be overemphasized!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Quik Production...Suga Free Isn't Bad Either.......2006-03-08

1997's Street Gospel is a memorable g funk era production with DJ Quik at the helm. It still retains its predictable raunchiness in part, but he doesn't overdo it, boasting about his unparalleled libido in every song. In fact, the two most memorable songs, the positive and insightful Dip Da and the hilarious smoking song, Doe Doe and A Skunk, contain few profanities.

Doe Doe and A Skunk is the first classic, with a fantastic funky beat, a smooth addictive hook and a funny subject matter. It was sampled also by Cali Life Style around the same time, but this song blows that one out of the water. The next classic and the best song on the album is Dip Da. It contains one of the most interesting series of lines in rap I've ever heard: "Now how in the hell/Did you figure you was gon cross/That pretty blue eyed-green eyed/Country voodoo creole female." It's one of those things that those uninitiated with rap, who just base their entire view of rap on MTV, wouldn't expect. And the whole song is insightful and creative as well, with Suga talking about his irresponsible father who left his kids to be raised by their mother.

The rest of the album has 2 near classics, On My Way, with a slow R&B groove like Dip Da and Tip Toe, a funky guitar-backed song where DJ Quik makes an appearance. Tip Toe (Reprise), a primarily instrumental version, is what we have come to expect with impassioned music-lover Quik's releases and is just as good. The quality of the album plummets thereafter, with nothing else memorable to speak of. It's not bad, it just seems like filler. Nonetheless, if you are a fan of DJ Quik's innovative funky rhythms and g funk era rap in genral, I'd recommend this one. The songs that are good are really good. 4.5/5

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC!! .......2005-08-14

DJ Quik (the best producer ever) did all the tracks in this one with help from Robert Bacon on some tracks. This album is just CLASSIC nuthin more to it!

4 out of 5 stars Suga Free's beats are addicting: 4.5 stars.......2005-02-18

Suga Free comes out strong on "Street Gospel." If you love G-Funk and humorous rhymes about hood life and pimpin', this is one to consider. Doe Doe And A Skunk has the best beat on the album. It has a smooth beat with excellent rhyming with a relaxing tropical background beat. Dip Da is a dope track showing Suga Free's more serious side dealing with issues in his family and the hood. It has a really hardcore beat and excellent rhyming. Don't sleep on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Suga Free, problem free.......2004-12-22

This is a very solid debut. A unique style of flow that seperates him from the pack, but easy to bang. Hes hot. Production is Q-U-I-K no C so u know its bangin. Lyrically this cat is a west koast phenom and highly underrated. For the majority of the album the feel is reminiscent of Quiks ground breaking "Tonite". Very close to being a classic. My reviews are for those close to the streets so if this isnt u dont be surprised if u dont agree.

5 out of 5 stars I'd Rather Give You My Money..........2004-03-19

If you haven't listened to this album, get out! There is no need for you to read these reviews! This c.d. is off the track man. The songs will make you wet your pants in laughter, and check your wallet cause your baby's mama mighta just dipped in their.
"I wanna go home", was on the Eastsidaz movie(hint hint) where he freestyles the lines to Snoop. Bow Wow!
"Doe Doe and a Skunk", best track. He caught me laughing with wonder, on how he got," Now I'm about to get gone, after I'm g'd up from the feet up, now roll this weed up like car heat up, speed up with the beat up and roll." within 4 seconds and not brea wind or something.
The rest...buy it and her it, it is worth not buying a bottle tonight and hearing yourself to become drunk.

Better than Dion's first. Great to share with friends.

4 out of 5 stars New Beginnings.......2006-11-03

For anyone interested in contemporary Christian music like myself who cut their teeth listening to Dion and the Belmonts during the rock 'n roll era, this type of cd is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great singer and honest spirituality.......2006-01-28

First of all this is very good music and full of excellent performances .
I mean song like "They won't tell you " deserve to be heard today as examples of real good craftmanship in songwriting . This song keep you interested all along. "My prayer for you " is beautiful beyond words and so simple . Simplicity and truth , real good music.
The songs in "I put away my idols " are really , really very inspired.
"Kingdom in the streets " is a fine record too so there is a change in sound , but Dion shows that he is a rocker second to none and deliver some fantastic ballad performances in "Come to the cross " and "He's in you ".
I recomend to anyone the 4 gospel records by Dion or I would say
the 5 . You won't regret at all to listen to these records . And in the process you will lear something about how to be an honest artist .
The gospel legacy of Dion will stand the test of time....wait and see

4 out of 5 stars A great disc .. well received.......2003-11-18

I eagerly awaited the reissue of these two albums on one CD. In the 1980's I had both of the vinyl records. "I Put Away My Idols" was the 3rd of the Christian albums put out by Dion, and was nominated for a Grammy in the Gospel category. For the Christian, this record is loaded with pure Christian encouragment and personal testimony. The lyrics are compelling and based on sound Bible doctrine. I especially like the song "They Won't Tell You". It is a song blasting the deceit being put out by the media of the day. A couple of smooth slower offerings are on the album also, including a beautiful duet entitled "Day of the Lord". One song .."Daddy" ..is so touching , that tears actually filled my eyes the first time I ever heard it. Not being the "sentimental type" .. I was surprised .. to say the least.
The album "Kingdom in the Street" has various styles of music on it, and has something for everybody to enjoy. One song .. titled "Crazy Too" .. has a neat doo-wah sound .. reminiscent of the old Dion and the Belmont days. I am particularly fond of the driving rock tunes on this album. The songs "Only God Can Make a Change" .. and "You only Go 'Round Once" ... are hard-hitting songs pertaining to eternal matters .. and Dion doesn't hold back his punches. I think that any Christian will truly enjoy this disc. It has a little something for everybody, and so gently relects Dion's love of God in several tunes... especially the songs "Healing" .. and "Come to the Cross" I highly recommend this CD.. whole-heartedly.. to everyone !!

I got a copy of this album thanks to my interest in Pink Floyd (Which Anderson incidentally named) and I was astounded.
There was something magical about the music.

I fell immediatly. The songs (Though traditional) "glued" themselves to my mind in a way that no 2001 pop song could.

And now I go around humming songs that were recorded in 1950.

This combined with the unlikely parallel to the Brittish Rock Band Pink Floyd turned out to be the biggest surprise (Musically) that I've ever experienced. And that's at age 23!

All thanks to a man called Pink Anderson

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful guitar........2001-04-01

This is an important album by two of the key musicians in the Piedmont blues guitar style.

Pink Anderson is best known for the three excellent Bluesville albums he recorded in 1961. Apart from four tracks in 1928 with Simmie Dooley, the only other recordings Anderson made prior to then are the first seven tracks of this CD, recorded in May 1950 by Paul Clayton, who came across Anderson playing in a medicine show in Charlottesville, Virginia. Anderson is in peak form here, stronger than in 1961, playing fine slide guitar on "John Henry", singing the blues "Every Day of the Week", and comic songs such as "I've Got Mine" and "He's In the Jailhouse Now". Great entertainment.

Gary Davis was a virtuoso guitarist in the Piedmont style who abandoned blues in the mid 1930s in favour of evangelical gospel songs, which he performed with great fervour in a voice that could be heard above heavy traffic and with superbly dynamic guitar accompaniment. These performances, from 1956, find him in electrifying form. He recorded many of these pieces again in the 1960s for Bluesville and others, but this session is hard to beat.

      Strongly recommended.

        Album Description

Cowboy Roy Brown was born in Arkansas on April 20, 1875, the son of a preacher. He and his sister learned to play guitar from their father who they accompanied when he played violin in church. Butler County, incorporated in 1870, is a 36 by 26 mile plot on a bluff of the Black River in the Missouri Bootheel just across the border from Arkansas. One community in the county, Morocco, was formed of predominately African Americans. Since Roy said that he was from Butler County and not specifically Poplar Bluff, it is possible that his home was Morocco. In his twenties, Roy visited St Louis during the 1904 World's Fair and later moved to Kansas City, then Marion, Illinois and then drifted to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Deadwood, South Dakota. Roy eventually returned to St Louis where he was a street singer performing with his guitar and catalog of blues, folk and cowboy tunes. Roy and his band - a guitar named "Baby"' and a kazoo named "Leon"' - performed cowboy standards and popular tunes. Popular if you lived in the days of the cowboys.

Cowboy Roy Brown, vocals, guitar, kazoo.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2002-04-15

This is a great album from little-known Christian rock band Three Crosses. Lead by the outstanding vocals of Steve Pasch, Three Crosses has always been a favorite band of mine. This CD, their 3rd release, is loaded with great songs. From classics such as "The Stone Was Rolled Away" to the intriguing soft rock "What Kind Of Love", Three Crosses does a great job. For some reason, these guys never hit it big, but for those of us who have heard of them, their music is great.
