Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The thrill of invention never stops on this first full-length album from Jurassic 5. Coming out of L.A.'s kinetic hip-hop underground, the multitalented combo whips up an irresistible flow of charisma and keeps the fun at a high-voltage level. J5 can pivot on a dime from one style to the next--street-corner barbershop, turntable friction, or kick-ass swing. But the constant focus is on the essentials of the art: Quality Control fuses fantastic wordplay and MC skills with a killer grab bag of beats. It's the achievement of J5 to look back in a way so fresh it shines a light ahead. --Thomas May
Amazon.com
L.A.-based Jurassic 5 have unearthed the lost art of flow. With a style reminiscent of the Native Tongues, J5 delivers one of the most consistent rap albums in recent memory. Cuts like "The Influence" and "Great Expectations" exhibit a wonderfully organic quality that could help us all to forget the tired rap formulas of money, hoes, and gats. Comprised of four MC's and two DJs (DJ Nu-Mark and the legendary Cut Chemist), J5 is near Ellingtonian in size for a hip-hip troupe. The interplay between the members reeks of old school, the place where rap sounds honest and evolves as an art form. As well it should, because J5 aren't new to hip-hop; after all, they've been "rockin' since the '84 Fresh Fest." --Marc Calhoun

Customer Reviews:
SO much better than what you hear on the radio.......2006-07-12
I'll admit it, the first song I heard from J5 was "A Day At The Races" when I rented Tony Hawk's Underground, and I really liked their old-school sound. My library happened to have this cd in stock, so I checked it out without hessitation.
As you can obviously see, I was extremely impressed. I have become SO sick of today's hip-hop...It's no wonder all the punk rock kids at my school hate rap so much. They judge the entire genre on what they hear on the radio...GARBAGE. It's pretty sad how such a good genre of music has gone so far downhill over the past few years...
But this review is not meant to trash modern mainstream hip-hop, it's to praise this cd.
The first thing I noticed was the damn catchy beats. They are so original, and sound very different from one another, however, they all maintain that classic old-school style. The second thing I noticed was how well they flowed as a group. You would think that 4 MCs all rapping together would sound kinda choppy, but they take turns with the mic, and the transaction between each MC sounds clean and well-executed. What's more, they are very unified, and sound like one person when they rap in unison. Finally, their lyrics are intelligent, and don't praise money, gats, hoes, and all the other things hip-hop is criticized for.
So if you love old-school rap, or rap in general, this cd is a definate must-have. My favorite songs are "The Influence", "Great Expectations", "Quality Control", "Monkey Bars", "Jurass Finish First", and "Game".
Enjoy =)
J5-QUALITY CONTROL.......2006-03-20
THIS IS THE BEST RAP CD I'VE EVER HEARD. THE BEATS AND RHYMES ARE EXCELLENT. J5'S BEST CD SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"4 mc's at your door once more".......2006-03-12
This is my favorite rap album, easy. J5's sound is so pure, it flows like nothing you've ever heard. The beats are so original, and so damn fresh. The rhymes are rediculous, they just keep coming. The songs are a treat for your ears. This album will put you in a good mood no matter how bad your day is going. And these guys rap about stuff other than sex, drugs, and violence. They are truly the perfect group. Before I heard J5, rap didn't do much for me. All I heard was what was on TV. Eminem and 50 rappin about the same stuff over, and over. J5 blows the rest of the competition out of the water. My favorite tracks on this CD are Great Expectations, Lausd, The Influence, and Jurass Finish First. This album is what hip hop is all about, good times.
I represent the real from the beginning to the end of it.......2006-03-02
This is the best HipHop group I've ever heard. The lyrics are incredible, original and with content not like 50 cent, Nelly, Ludacris etc etc etc all those fake MC's, J5 is real HipHop, they are the truth and they tell you the truth without those gangsta lyrics so common in HipHop nowadays. After I heard J5 for the first time I came to realise that this is real HipHop, this is what i was looking for, Jurassic 5 will make you heard the lyrics and try to understand them because they do have content. Every song is different and have different beats and lyrics, you cant get bored listening to Jurassic. I think is the perfect HipHop group, I dont see anything wrong on them, you just listen Quality Control and you will realise, songs like Lausd and Great Expectations (not only those all the album as well) make you realise what they are, they DO love HipHop, they DO make music for pleasure and for love not like others MC's or so called Mc's, they are not interested in money etc etc, they are just perfect. Quality Control is the best album they have so far but that doesnt mean that the others are bad because what I see in Jurassic is that they always keep it real, you can see that in the 3 albums they have not change for bad even more they have change for better, for example Chali 2na flow have improved so well that it will make flip out your seat and the lyrics always have kept the Underground flavour. Definitely if you like real non commercial HipHop you have to buy Jurassic 5 albums especially Quality Control.
HipHop is in good hands......as long as they rest on Jurassic 5 ones. Go J5!!!!
One of the best and most accessible rap albums ever - there's NOTHING you won't like here!.......2006-01-08
I'm going to make the claim that Jurassic 5 is the best rap group ever - not because they're the best lyricists or MCs, but because they're the most accessible. They're just extremely fun to listen to. Every MC here has a distinct personality (and they are Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7even and Chali 2na), and you'll love every one of them (I love the one with the deep voice the most (Chali 2na)). The lyrics are always fun and memorable, and the beats are very catchy and impressive. Every track here is wonderful and definitely memorable which is a hard thing to achieve (many rap albums also have VERY good songs, but they tend to not be that memorable after listening to them). Though I love many many rap artists (Ice Cube, Too $hort, Run-D.M.C., The Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Skee-Lo...), Jurassic 5 wins hands down as my favorite group. There's a high probability that most people will love this album (and to an extent their follow-up "Power In Numbers"). Highly recommended!

the entire album!

Finally...Hip-Hop for anyone.......2003-02-24
This cd by jurassic 5 is truly outstanding. The beats are amazing and the lyrics fit well. Impressively, J5 does not use offensive lyrics and constant foul language in their music. For that reason, I would recommend this cd for anybody. Every song is great and very upbeat. My favorites are 2,9,12,13. Track 13 (impovise) is an excellent song for any listener at any time.
J5 is bomb.......2001-09-10
aight, y'all know that J5 knows how to put tracks together. everything of theirs just flows. they go back to the old school styles, great hip hop beats, amazing lyrics. their creativity is outstanding. they have no limits. buy this cd-you will be happy with it.
Quality Control is LOW QUALITY.......2001-08-01
This album is GARBAGE! I don't know what the other reviewers were smoking at the time they were listening to this album. My experience is a complete 180 from theirs. They are some successful rap groups/rappers that have low lyrical skills but get over by phat beats and great production. But they are NO successful rappers/rap groups that have NO lyrical skills and NO beats/production. J-5, have weak rhyme skills and weak production. Quality Control is the only song worth listen to on this album. The rest of the album ... . This group has borrowed from De La Soul's "Three Feet and Rising" sample of the French language instruction tape. However, J-5 couldn't pull it off like De La and that's about the only comparison you could make to De La. This group is so wack! If I could return this CD back to ..., I would. I am now looking to sell it to some used CD store. At the time that I bought this album, Amazon didn't have the track listen ability that they do now. If you don't like my opinions, listen to the tracks yourself. If you really want this CD, hope that Columbia Records sends you a "get 15 CD's for free" in the mail.
J5 represents what hiphop should be...Quality.......2001-06-05
Jurassic 5 truly represents what hiphop is supposed to be like: creative music making (not stealing samples) , and fun hearted non-hating lyrics...
First off some beats mixed by Cut Chemist and DJ-NuMark are just plain to describe it absolutely amazing... on "Monkey Bars" they create a harmony with pots and pans banging in the backround, on "Swing Set" they create a 1930s style music, "Quality Control" they make a nice old school style beat...and the other beats are just as good...
Even J5's lyrics are pretty good...they have an odd sounding yet good harmony, their flow is absolutely perfect from one lyricist to the other. Clearly Chali-2NA and Akil are the best wordsmiths but Zaakir and Marc7 follow closely behind. They all have creative topics that they rap about such as: "Lausd" where they rap about people on the route to fame, "W.O.E." where they define what entertainment is supposed to be, "Contribution" (the only track i'm not that crazy about, but it's still good) where they rap about 3 family situations that all end up with the same conclusion, and on "The Game" where they creatively rhyme about playing basketball...
Overall this is a great cd that truly represents hiphop...the only downside is that there's only 11 songs, but there all good enuf to make this cd a 5-star rating...
Phat J5.......2001-04-10
This album is amazing, the flow of uncommercial rap is immense and the beats are something to get ya bumpin'.Quality control is a phat tune and J5 are definately in control of the high quality of this cd.

Sparkling, Snarky Fun!.......2006-07-28
I found my way to Kevin O'Donnell's cds through my love of Andrew Bird's music. Now Kevin O'Donnell's Quality Six shares pride of place at the very top of my playlist.
Each track is tightly woven and masterfully played. Lyrics are often delivered with wit and always executed with flair. O'Donnell's drums shimmer and Bird's violin just plain sings.
What's more, this music is flat-out fun. "Control Freak" and "Heretic Blues" got me through the grueling ordeal of studying for the NY Bar Exam. And if I actually pass, I will find Mr. O'Donnell and I will buy him a drink.
A brilliant album which is made with sheer ingenuity!!.......2001-06-12
Like it's predecessor album, Heretic Blues which is a must for any music enthusiast, this album, Control Freak contains an excellent collections of jazz tunes. Every piece of music is spiritually and musically so brilliant that it is even impossible to describe in words here. The CD starts with two exceptional nice instrumental jazz pieces "She Got the Apples" and "Man Alive". The pieces "One Lonely Drum", "Tight And Long", "The Depths", "Oh, So Quietly He Went", "Tell Everyone I Said Goodbye" and "Caravan" contains the vocal of Andrew Bird and as usual he actually performed his job with sheer perfection. Every song is undoubtedly mind blowing. Caravan has the elements of gypsy music tradition. This piece shows again how talented musician Mr. Bird is and how sexy and hot the strings of violin can be. In this CD, Mr. Bird has mastered both his vocal and strings of violin perfectly like his previously two highly acclaimed albums, Thrills and Oh! The Grandeur.
Every piece in this CD is made with sheer ingenuity by the leadership of Mr. Kevin O'Donnell. But I must mention about the the instrumental peices such as "The Blanket Drag" and "Thanks For Dinner" which are extremely lively. "No More Oscar" sounds quite like funeral parade or marching jazz sound. The CD ends with a nice monologue or rather a recitaion as if it is a poetry. The lyrics of this piece "Chocolate Egg" is taken from an actual event from Mr. O'Donnell's childhood as it is claimed on the cover of this CD. Thanks Mr. O'Donnell for sharing his personal experience with us, though at cost of few bucks!
On the cover of this CD it is written that this CD has the influence of Tom Waits-infected blues. Actually, my early days of music collection started with among others the albums of musician Tom Waits and I have almost every album of Tom Waits today. I like his music and there is no doubt about that. But this CD, Control Freak or their previous CD, Heretic Blues does sound better than any of the Tom Waits album. I consider this CD to be another milestone in my collection. Anyway, I thank every musician of this group Q6 for giving us such a wonderfull album. Especially, my thanks goes to co-producer Mr. Mike Napolitano who previously have produced some of the most brilliant albums that I have ever listened.
As a jazz enthusiast, I could give this CD ten stars with out any doubt. I strongly recommend any one to buy this extremely sexy, hot and diverse CD NOW.
(Buy also CDs of the gifted musician Andrew Bird, Kevin O'Donnels, Tom Maxwell, Tom «Jimbo» Mathus, Katharine Whalen and of the group Squirrel Nut Zippers, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, Kevin O'Donnels Quality Six and other musicians whose name appears on the cover of their CDs. These musicians use to collaborate with each other.)

geez, i can't believe no one else has reviewed this.......2001-02-24
this is a really wonderful album. the first "quality 6" release was pretty good, but this is a lot more fun. there's a lot of style and personality with this group, and plenty of musicianship to go with it. the only song i'm not too impressed with is "caravan", but i've never really liked that song, so i feel guilty holding it against koq6 for failing to change my mind. there are plenty of strong tracks, but the big crowd pleaser i'm sure is the opening song, "she's got the apples". that song ROCKS. the rest of album never matches the hyperness that it starts off with, but you don't really feel sorry about it. it veers off in all kinds of different directions and finally closes with what most people would probably consider to be a novelty song, the spoken word "chocolate eggs" (which, despite several listenings, i have yet to tire of).
buy this cd, and you won't be disappointed. personally, i wished i lived in chicago so i could check these guys out on regular basis. if only...
