In their brief, volatile tenure as a working band--which spawned just two proper albums, Faithless Street (1995) and Strangers Almanac (1997)--Whiskeytown never quite fulfilled their considerable promise. But prior to their ultimate split, the band made a record that was buried for nearly three years by industry snafus. Pneumonia was well worth the wait. The band's final lineup (singer and songwriter Ryan Adams, violinist Caitlin Cary, and guitarist Mike Daly) is augmented by special guests such as Tommy Stinson of the Replacements and James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins. Sure, Adams doesn't quite grasp what he's reaching for on the Latin-tinged "Paper Moon," and "Sit & Listen to the Rain" is about as exciting as its title suggests. But "Jacksonville Skyline," a hometown ode that's sweetly nostalgic but hardly naive, easily ranks among Adams's best ballads. And don't bother trying to elude the hooks of the bouncy kiss-off "Don't Wanna Know Why" or the polished piano pop of "Mirror, Mirror." While it's unfortunate that the reliably unreliable Whiskeytown didn't live to see the release of their most consistent disc, Pneumonia is a harbinger of still better things to come from both Adams and Cary. --Anders Smith-Lindall

kids, you fence-sitting 4-4.5 stars types................are YOU MAD? this recording is brilliant.

errrr, ummm.....have you heard THE JAYHAWKS, Rainy Day Music??? well, this recording is up there with those guys.

see, the problem with people to spend more than 5 mins writing a review is that!!!! they have more than 5 mins to waste - ie: not constructive creating their own wonders. Whiskeytown, this is the record I play my wife. this is love!!!

Consistently excellent.......2006-05-02

I am taking the time to write this review for two reasons:
1) I must disagree with the Amazon reviewer who said that "Sit & Listen to the Rain" is unexciting. It's a great song. Though artist comparisons are almost always bunk, this song makes me think of Kurt Cobain and what he might have done. Anyway, a very good song IMHO.
2) I own six Ryan Adams albums (Whiskeytown, The Cardinals, and Solo) and this is my favorite. 11 out of 14 tracks are great, and the other three ain't bad. My opinion of course, but I say buy this album without hesitation.

If you like Ryan Adams.......2005-08-16

If you like Ryan Adams you will like this CD. My favorites "Reason to Lie" and "Sitting in the Rain".

Sit and listen to the Whiskeytown........2005-08-15

I guess I'm one of many who knew of Ryan Adams before I knew of Whiskeytown. However, after listening to bands like The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, and of course Ryan Adams, I decided to pick up their final album. In short this is just as I expected, and the mood and quality of songwriting did please. It would be easy to say that any fan of his, or theirs, or the genre would dig this disc. There may be a few so-so tracks near the middle, but it starts off excellent, ends the same way, and overall is a great listen. It's really been the only time that I was ever very happy to have gotten "Pneumonia".

Several hits, a few misses..........2005-05-26

I gave this album 2 years to sink in with me and I can't say it's as good as FAITHLESS STREET, but it is still an excellent album. My favorite tracks are "Jacksonville Skyline," "What the Devil Wanted," and "Reason To Lie." I think slapping the alt/country label on this one would be a bit unfair. There is a wide variety of music on this cd because Ryan Adams is a great songwriter.

A nice addition for your Ninja weaponry........2002-02-11

I'm not sure if the other reviewer has something against indie-rock or just isn't a leftfield fan, but regardless of any bias towards certain genres, this single is quite nice. Has a cool Beck-esque flavor to it, more like some of his older material and a bit of bands like Manic Street Preachers mixed with leftfield beats and such. The scratching on the track is top-notch, although it's not the showy, scratch-routine stuff like people do all the time with lame breaks like "fresh." What sounds to be a nicely chopped up middle-eastern wind instrument mingles in with the melody at times to give it a nice little kick. If the single is any indication of the full-length release, then I'm certainly ready for it.

ninja tune should look for something else.......2002-02-05

i've been trying to dig on this single for a while, but i can only say it is straight up wack. i suppose it is good to see ninja tune willing to experiment with some new ideas, but fusing indie rock with hip-hop/turntablism/leftfield is not well done here. whiny flaming lips like vocals drone over some minorly adjusted beats to create a piece of noise i really didn't enjoy. even coldcut's remix couldn't save it. 'moon repellent', the b-side track, was only marginally better, but still not something that is well done. try again, ninja tune.

ROCKIN PNEUMONIA.......2001-04-14

This CD contains the songs we want but the sound quality is terrible. I have many enhanced CD's of music from the fiftys and before and most of them manage to achieve pretty good sound quality. These people didn't even try. I Give it two thumbs down.
