Initially known best for being a huge white-boy rapper from Tennessee, Haystak overcame his anomalous status with time as U.S hip hop listeners learned to cherish his sincerity. Unlike many of his Southern peers, Haystak didn't embrace materialism and greed; he rapped about his life as so-called "white trash," exploring the social dimensions of being white and underprivileged in the South. Following the success of fellow white-boy rappers Eminem and Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak found it easier to earn respect in an industry that had long frowned upon white rappers, particularly those from the country. Though previous releases established Joe Nichols as a traditionalist of uncommon vocal subtlety and emotional depth, the featured tracks on III are comparatively lightweight. Both the album-opening "Size Matters" and the first single, "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off," attach suggestive titles to material that is more like playful hokum. The former stresses the importance of a big heart; the latter concerns a girl who gets innocently careless when she's out barroom dancing. (If Nichols isn't embarrassed to sing the lines "Them panty hose ain't gonna last too long/If the DJ puts Bon Jovi on," he should be.) Yet much of the rest of the album reinforces his stylistic strengths, with "Talk Me Out of Tampa" evoking the conversational phrasing of prime Merle Haggard, "Should I Come Home (Or Should I Go Crazy)" channeling the inspiration of retro George Jones, and "I'll Wait for You" wringing every last tear from a stone cold country weeper. As Patty Loveless did on Dreamin' My Dreams, which came out a month earlier, Nichols also covers Steve Earle's "My Old Friend the Blues," which appears on its way to becoming a contemporary country standard. --Don McLeese

The new CD from Joe Nichols is fantastic. His music gets better with every CD. Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off is very funny especially after watching the video for the song. Size Matters is another pretty good song. My favorite song on the CD is I'll Wait For You. This song is a tear jerker. It is about a man who can never make it on time to come home when he goes out of town. The last verse is the saddest. His wife passes away and he never makes it to the hospital in time to say goodbye but his wife writes him a letter and it says I'll Wait For You at the pearly gates but I will tell St. Peter I can't go in until my love gets here. WOW what a powerful song. Joe Nichol's should get more recognition than he gets. He is a powerful singer with a powerful voice. Should I Come Home (Or Should I Go Crazy) is another song that should be a single.

I'll be the very first to say that I'm NOT an avid country fan. I don't dislike country music in the least, but it isn't the genre of music that I run to the record store to buy the newest attraction. For me, I have an acquired taste when it comes to purchasing country CDs; I have select favorites. Recently, I've been trying to explore the music more because being a musician, I feel it is important to be well-rounded in as many genres as you can be. Personally, country has a few artists that draw my attention and even in some instances strike my fancy: Alan Jackson, Gretchen Wilson, Carrie Underwood (impressive enough new artist), The Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, and now Joe Nichols joins the batch. Even with that said, a few standout singles impress me from time to time, particulary Billy Currington's catchy "Must Be Doing Something Right" or Johnny Cash's posthumously released single/video for "God's Gonna Cut You Down". Getting back to the person being reviewed, Joe may not be the most popular nor the most lauded country singer, but I think Joe has a lot of promise in the industry; his baritone vocals certainly resonate with me and he is good for a couple of strong country singles. His baritone is quite reminiscent (to me at least)of Alan Jackson. However, III isn't an Alan Jackson album in the least-- it is a Joe Nichols album.

The album starts out rambunctiously with the infectious, playful "Size Matters", which starts out with a country, twang sound, heightened via fiddles in the background. Sure, it has your typical country sound, but it is a strong, catchy track. The chorus resonates very well: "with a big ol' heart/ who can love her like nobody can/ big ol' kisses that go on and on and never end/ with a big ol' small that'll fill the world with laughter/ size matters/ size matters". You can't help but sing "Size Matters" to yourself, which is what makes it such a strong track. "Freedom Feels Like Lonely" is another strong track, though not as strong as single "Size Matters". The chord progression and song writing here are very tight and the production suits Nichol's baritone vocals perfectly. It is in the pocket, even if it doesn't quite live up to the greatness and the fun qualities of "Size Matters". It is a good, "it is, what it is number."

"Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" is the number that drove many buyers to Nichols's new album. It is definitely fun and sort of "raw" in a tasteful way. Most amazing may be Nichols's reference to "patron" in a country song! You'd expect to hear references to patron in a hip-hop/rap number, but a country track? That's innovation right there! One trend within III is that the best tracks tend to be the ones that are a bit riskier such as "Size Matters" and of course the rediculous, but credible "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off".

"Talk Me Out Of Tampa" is another strong track, though it is more low key compared to the risky "Size Matters" or "Tequila". It does however return Nichols to a tamer country sound with some pop sensibilites, well at least till the chorus exhibits all of Nichol's country chops. "That's What Love'll Get You" is a faster track, needed after the good, but slow "Talk Me Out Of Tampa". It isn't anything truly new or anything that we haven't heard from country singers in the past, but it is your typical country performance and it is above average.

What attracted me to III was a quick skip past Country Music Television's Top 20 Video Countdown. There I saw the excellent, yet underrated "I'll Wait For You". For me, "I'll Wait For You" is perhaps the most touching ballad I've heard for a while, country, pop, rock, reggae, or whatever it be. Nichols sounds fantastic here and the song makes you just want to burst into tears. I took the risk of buying the whole album because I loved "I'll Wait For You". Honestly, I wasn't the least bit disappointed either. "Should I Come Home (Or Should I Go Crazy)" is another straightfoward country number that doesn't wow me, but it is very catchy. The chorus is another that I enjoy to sing to myself and the vocal harmonies are very lovely. The production work is very strong as well and is simple enough that it truly highlights Nichol's deep baritone.

"My Old Friend The Blues" is another slow number, which starts out without drums and eventually adds them in. It is predictable, but Joe again sounds at his very best and he doesn't oversing the song. It is a number like this where you hear the "Alan Jackson" comparisons. The simplicity is what makes this number. "As Country as She Gets" is more rhythmic, but it is "Honky Tonk Girl" that revives the album for anybody who had doubts after the past few tracks preceeding it. Again, Nichols proves that his strongest material is he "riskier" numbers. "Just A Little More" ends the album with a very slow rhythmic feel. Again, the production is very simple with only traces of instruments adding to the feel occasionally. Nichol's subtle vocals again drive this number and it proves to pay off, even if it is predictable. It is a nice way to end a brief, but overall very strong album.

III is strong enough for me, but I do wish that it was a bit longer. I think that shorter albums are more consistent because there is less room for error (or filler), but 37 minutes maybe cutting it a bit too close. 45 minutes is more acceptable in my eyes. The positive thing is that III does feel complete enough and the extra 8-10 minutes may have hindered it as opposed to helped it. Sure, III isn't perfect, nor is it the best country album I've heard, but it is very good and it is a shame that just 500,000 country fans purchased it. But, Nichols I think has a promising future and if he keeps getting better and better he will hopefully one day get the recognition he deserves. 3 ½ Stars.

The Dirty South is the sixth album by Muscle Shoals, Alabama-based Drive-By Truckers. While previous Southern rock bands have celebrated certain regional mythologies, this quintet revels in the towering glory of small, gritty realities. They can kick up a righteous storm, as on the country lick-filled opener "Where the Devil Don't Stay," or the swamp and fuzzy "Lookout Mountain." However, within the latter is a daunting verse: "If I throw myself off Lookout Mountain, No more for my soul to keep, I wonder who will drive my car, I wonder if my Mom will weep." It's clear these guys deliver emotional wallops at every turn. "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" honors the honesty of Sam Phillips, while writhing in the melancholy of changing times and circumstances. --David Greenberger

I know that average reviews are not viewed as all that "helpful", but, like the previous reviewers from Indianapolis and Scotland, I thought I'd offer one anyway.

I went out and bought The Dirty South after I read the rave reviews on Amazon. From most of the reviews here, you would think that the Drive By Truckers rival the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, and early ZZ Top. According to one reviewer, they are the "saviours of rock." IMO, that's going way too far. The DBT are probably more on par talent-wise with the VRoys (from the late 90s), the Old 97s, and the North Mississippi Allstars - all decent bands, all with a good deal of talent, but ultimately one Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons short (in other words, a long way away) from being the next great Southern rock band.

Still, the Dirty South is a pretty decent album. "Lookout Mountain", "Never Gonna Change" and "Where the Devil Don't Stay" showcase the DBT's driving, dense guitar sound. "The Day John Henry Died" and "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" show that the band can write good music to go along with their strong lyrics if they put their mind to it. And "Danko/Manuel" is a great, slow country song.

For me, the main problem with The Dirty South is when the band uses their music simply as background to their vocals, which is the case on nearly half the songs. Too few hooks or changes in tempo makes for a rather bland and repetitive listening experience after awhile. "Cottonseed" and "Daddy's Cup" are songs that do absolutely nothing for me because of this.

A decent album, yes. A classic? Far from it.

A logical progression from Decoration Day to A Blessing and a Curse, the lyrical content is actually stepped up a notch by all three of the fellas on this one. It's hard to point out a lousy song here, and there are a handful that are truly works of art. Patterson- always a favorite, but the Cooley tunes on this disc really knock me out.
If ya love the other 2 I mentioned, you'll love this one too.

And just when I thought rock'n'roll was dead. DBT really are the savers of rock, they're all we've got now, and The Dirty South is simply amazing. Hard, fast, real, and most importantly fun, The Dirty South is an album to just shove in the cd player, and not have a need to skip a track. The perfect highway companion.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

At the age of 69, J.D. Crowe enters his fifth decade of recording surveying the past and the present--and seeing nothing but pure bluegrass. Even when employing nonstandard instruments like pedal steel (played by Nashville genius Doug Jernigan) or breaking the rules of Scrugg-style banjo all over again, Crowe continues to draw on the sound and style that made the first New South album (Rounder 0044) a landmark. The low- and high-tenor blend of Rickey Wasson and Dwight McCall echoes the classic harmonies of Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs, and the instrumental brilliance is always subordinate to good songs--contemporary in feel yet indebted to an honest, rural-based lyricism and durable, flexible old-time traditions. The band rocks through the public domain "Roving Gambler," jumps freights nimbly on "I'm a Hobo," and then subverts the myths on "In My Next Life," a devastating portrait of rural, working life and dreams. Cindy Walker's chestnut "Blue Bonnet Lane" is a showcase for McCall's sugary-smooth high lead singing and, of course, Crowe's wicked little banjo fills, while the title track, a highlight of New South live sets for years, is especially welcome. The album's only stumble is "You Can Be a Millionaire with Me," which makes an unfortunate equation between capital accumulation and soul salvation. Good stuff from JD and his band, now with acoustic bass. Also has some nice steel (Doug Jernigan) that bluegrass purists probably won't like but its only on two songs, deal with it. As usual, JD's backup work is exemplary and Ron Stewart plays nice fiddle. If you like semi-traditional bluegrass, you won't be disappointed with this CD. Erik The Pope recommends it!

Playing Time - 34:10 -- From Kentucky, J.D. Crowe began his career as a member of Mac Wiseman's band in 1955. Thus, "Lefty's Old Guitar" is also somewhat of a half century celebratory milestone for J.D. After an early stint with Jimmy Martin, he formed his own group in 1968, The Kentucky Mountain Boys (with Doyle Lawson and Red Allen). The New South first took the stage in 1974 with Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas. Abut 2002, Rounder Records re-released "My Home Ain't in the Hall of Fame" (the band's seminal 1978 album). Over the years, band alumni have included Keith Whitley, Jimmy Gaudreau, Paul Adkins, Wendy Miller, Gene Johnson (Diamond Rio), Tony King (Brooks and Dunn), and many others. In 1999, J.D. and The New South put out the album "Come on Down to My World," that introduced us to Dwight McCall's singing and mandolin playing. A year later, however, some of their bandmates left to form another stellar group, Wildfire. That 1999 album was the band's last studio album until "Lefty's Old Guitar" hit the mark.

Today, the award-winning banjo player's band is comprised of some masterful pickers and singers - Dwight McCall (mandolin, vocals), Rickey Wasson (guitar, vocals), Ron Stewart (fiddle), and Harold Nixon (bass). Crowe, of course, also typically sings a baritone harmony in choruses. Their vocal blends are resonant, full of joy or sung with pathos, when needed. For their highest, lonesomest sound, check out "She Knows When You're On My Mind Again," that lays in Cia Cherryholmes' high baritone harmony on the very top. While Wasson does most of the lead vocalizing on "Lefty's Old Guitar," McCall's sumptuous high voice belts out the verses' lyrics on his own self-penned "I Only Wish You Knew," Larry Sparks' "Just Loving You," and Cindy Walker's "Blue Bonnet Lane."

Their contemporary repertoire is arranged with shared breaks and crafty instrumental fills. "Lefty's Old Guitar" has been a long time, about seven years, in coming. I guess that the band and record label felt that the current personnel had now solidified into a very cohesive unit of impeccability. Crowe has always been astute about incorporating some country feeling into his music. Doug Jernigan's pedal steel on two cuts doesn't bother me, and I appreciate their not feeling a need to put drums or percussion into the mix. Other producers (usually Nashville-based) feel that `power' bluegrass music needs drums to present commercial, radio-friendly fare. J.D. Crowe proves that it just ain't so! One thing I did find missing from their successful formula, however, would be a hard-driving barnburner that really challenges the instrumental picking and bowing prowess of highly regarded award winners like Ronnie Stewart. However, the set still provides some eclectic ups and downs in tempos for songs that are as sure to become as classic and influential as some of J.D. Crowe's seminal works. JD Crowe has struck gold with this CD! This CD sounds contemparary without sacrificing the traditional bluegrass sound. This CD contains great arrangements that fit bluegrass but leave the listner guessing at what may happen next. This is the best I have heard from Crowe since the Skaggs/Rice days. The song selections, vocals and instrumentations are as good as anything else current in bluegrass today. JD's banjo picking sounds very youthful and full of that great tone that has set him apart from other pickers of his generation for so many years. To me Scruggs, Crowe and Fleck are what define great banjo playing. Thanks JD for a great CD!

Here's one of the GREAT releases of 2006. Unfortunately, it will be missed by most. I had a rare opportunity to see Lee Roy Parnell perform at a small and intimate concert this past summer in Wimberley, Texas (warm Texas night, cold beer... priceless!). Standing close to the stage (dance floor), I was struck with the vast extent of this man's talent. He does it all... incredible guitar player; strong, soulful voice; beautiful and intelligent lyrics; stage presence; audience interaction; everything. I hadn't heard any of the tracks from "Back to the Well" before the concert, but immediately fell in love with all of them. "Something out of Nothing," "Just Lucky That Way," and "Saving Grace" are three of the best songs I've ever heard... beautiful. Buy this CD and play it over and over... Look Lee Roy up and see him in concert next time he's in town. He's the real thing.

Last Saturday evening (July 15th 06), I had the opportunity to meet Lee Roy Parnell. I have been a huge fan for several years after being introduced to his music by a friend who was with me and able to meet him as well. The concert was in an out of the way place in Massanutten Ski Resort in Virginia and the turn out was low. I was tremendously dissappointed with the crowd in attendance. Although they were big fans of Lee Roy, they were quite lackadaisical and quiet. It was interesting that they cheered wildly for the local start up groups that were horrible (to say it kindly)... A very unsophisticated bunch. This is not to cast aspersions on Virginians (being one myself) but I was literally embarassed.
What made the 3 1/2 hour trip was when Lee Roy Parnell came on the stage. At the first note of his guitar I felt like I had found my place in musical mecca! I absolutely love his music. What I was about to find out though was that I really like him. He paid no mind to the small crowd (which had to be a failure of promotion by the resort) and just played his heart out. After the concert, he availed himself to anyone who wanted to meet him. I was up near the front of the line and, trying to be courteous, I tried to be fast as I got his autograph on his new CD - Back to the Well - and was surprised when he really wanted to talk. We discussed his group, especially his drummer, and discussed my name, Darcy, which he immediately recognized as Irish stock and mentioned that he had a cousin by that name. I was surprised at how he really reached out to my friend and I and every other attendee. He is a very personable guy possessed with great talent. I wish more people would listen to his music and get hooked as I have.
As far as "Back to the Well", I highly recommend that you listen to it along with his earlier, more well known music. He is a great guy and his music smokes!

Prime Cuts: Saving Grace, Old Soul, Daddies and Daughters

No one imbues their country with such an ineluctable funky blues like Lee Roy Parnell. Yet, Parnell still has the ability to stay commercially assessable. Signed to the most temerarious Universal South Records, whose roaster include gutsy left of center artists such as the Notorious Cherrybombs and Shooter Jennings, this is Parnell's second chance at a major label. After his substantial stint at Arista Records with a string of hits such as "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am," "On the Road" and "Love without Mercy," one would have expected Parnell to buy in to the Music Row hit-making machinery of recycling today's country hit songs. But, this Texas-bred musician has wisely chose to follow his blues-infested heart in creating one of his most honest and engaging records. On the other hand, Parnell has not given in to an over indulgence in his craft, making this record far too idiosyncratic. Rather there is a cadence that welcomes the uninitiated and given the right promotion, "Back to the Well" ought to appeal en masse.

Of note is the presence of Tony Arata's pen. Arata, whose songs has made it to the catalogs of Garth Brooks ("Anonymous"), Patty Loveless ("Handful of Dust") and Emmylou Harris ("I Hear a Call") among others, shares the same ink with Parnell on 6 stellar cuts. Best of which is "Old Soul," a bluesy lament about a lady who has come to grips with the negativity of life, finds its gravitas in Parnell's sensitive vocal nuances. Though Patty Loveless has delivered a tour de force version of "Old Soul" on her latest CD "Dreaming My Dreams," Parnell's own version does not pale to Loveless'. Despite Parnell's bearded tough guy disposition, he does get intimate on one of his best ballads "Daddies and Daughters" which also features the tender backing vocals of daughter Alison. Kicking up his heels with a thumping backbeat, "Something Out of Nothing" is another Arata/Parnell gem, this time finding Parnell rocking along a la his "Lucky Me, Lucky You" days.

Of the tracks untouched by Arata, "Saving Grace" is a stop-in-your-tracks love ballad with a celestial gospel-like overtone. On the more commercial side "Just Lucky That Way," finds a bewildered Parnell unable to decipher the complexities of love. While on "The Hunger" Parnell wades in the Bruce Springsteen territory complemented by Parnell's signature gruff yet searching vocals. Nevertheless, on the title cut, "Don't Water It Down" and "You Can't Lose Them All" are typical Parnell rockers with his signature searing jabs of electric slide and propulsive drum beats. They are all made for good listens, but they veer on the side of ordinary. Further, "Cool Breeze," the album closer, is a forgettable instrumental that has become a staple typical of a Parnell CD.

Overall, there's more on "Back to the Well" that satisfies than disappoints. In a genre where many country songs hinges upon cliches and what itches the ears of the audience, Parnell sings without any scaffolds. For those who have a low threshold in monotony, "Back to the Well," with its variety of styles, themes and tempos, ought to satiate. Indeed, in the desert of sound-alikes, "Back to the Well" is an oasis that refreshes.

Quite simply, Lee Roy Parnell does not get nearly enough credit for the music that he makes. For years he has been putting out records featuring fantastically written, honest songs, impeccable slide guitar, and a voice that truly delivers.
Back to the Well might be the best overall album he has ever put out, from the funky open of the title track right through to the sweet and loving "saving grace" the album has something for everyone.
Looking for something inspiring, "Old Soul" fits the bill. Want an uptempo bluesy-rocker to hit the road with "Don't Water it Down" or "The Hunger" will fill your tank. Looking for a song to make the tough guys get a little teary eyed? check out "Daddies and Daughters" - with vocal help from his own daughter.

Lee Roy Parnell is back making great music and I for one am glad he is.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

This is easily one of the best albums of 2005 and, in my opinion, the greatest of Marty's Career. Even if you're not a fan of gospel music there is enough tone, taste, harmony, and all around superb musicianship here to keep this in heavy rotation. If you get a chance go see Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives live as they will rock and revive you both all in spectacular Superlatone! Thank God for Marty!

Marty Stuart's new album -- the first on his own label -- is an audacious blend of gospel songs, earthy grooves, and gorgeous vocal harmony the four-time Grammy winner calls "church-house rock and roll." Featuring twin twangy guitars (played by Stuart and the vibey Kenny Vaughan) panned wide in the mix over a rhythm section of bare-bones bass, clickity-clack drums, and subliminal organ, Souls' Chapel has a rollicking, funky feel. That's not surprising: The songs were recorded live at Stuart's house with no baffles, endless overdubs, or neurotic Pro Tools tweaking. Soaked in amp tremolo and spring reverb, the intertwining guitars form the pillars of each song. The instrumental "Souls' Chapel" -- with its throbbing, palm-muted arpeggios, Memphis sliding sixths, burly low-string riffs, double-stop bends, and Curtis Mayfield-inspired hammers -- is a standout. Despite the album's religious lyrics, you needn't be a believer to grasp the 6-string magic oozing from every cut.

Joe Nichols's acclaimed 2002 debut was refreshingly free of artifice, brimming with honest, straightforward songs that put him in a rare position. Few critics' darlings deliver commercial success, but Nichols confounded that equation by delivering hit singles, formidable album sales, and three Grammies. His sophomore effort (again produced by Brent Rowan) mixes jovial, breezy honky-tonk ("Don't Ruin It for the Rest of Us" and "What's A Guy Gotta Do") with smart oldies picks: Gene Watson's 1979 hit "Farewell Party" and the title track, an obscure 1972 Waylon Jennings album cut. Nichols's evocative tableaus continue with a winning rendition of Iris DeMent's poignant "No Time to Cry." Poignancy, however, must be handled with care. It packs an emotional wallop when used sparingly, as it does on "If Nobody Believed in You." But too many similar tunes--"Things Like That (These Days)," for example--erode the impact. Nichols earned the right to strike out in more ambitious directions, and while nothing here is below par, he needn't have played it quite this safe. --Rich Kienzle

I knew from his debut cd Man with a memory that Joe Nichols had a great Country voice and delivered both up beat songs and ballads with a traditional feel.
But on his 2nd album he uses his voice almost as a sheer instument of poignancy.
Songs like "The Shade", "Singer in a Band", "I wish that Wasn't all" "If Nobody Believed in You" "Things like That These Days" and especially "Farewell Party" "Revelation" and Most of All "No Time to Cry", Joe takes me in like very few singers could ever hope to do.
His voice sounds poetic on these tracks.
And of course he delivers great uptempo modern country with "Don't ruin it for the rest of us" and "What's a Guy Gotta Do".
Great follow up.

The only redeeming song on this disc is track 10...What's A Guy Gotta do. It's fun, upbeat, and a great dance track. The rest of the songs are slow paced and depressing.

Joe Nichols burst on to the national scene with 2002's Man with A Memory, and although I liked the singles released from that CD ("Brokenheartsville", "She Only Smokes When She Drinks"), I didn't buy it. Even the first single from this album was not impressive enough ("If Nobody Believed In You") to make me buy it.

The next song to come out was "Whats A Guy Gotta Do". That is the third best song on the album, but what spurred me to buy it in the first place was the realization that the title tune "Revelation" was indeed a cover of one of my all-time favorite Waylon Jennings gospel songs. (although theeditorial review by amazon.com calls it "obscure", I've been listening to it all my life) Nichols gives an impressive voice tyo the lyrics and proves to make the song as haunting as Jennings version.

Nichols also does a very good version of the Gene Watson tune "Farewell Party". Being a classic country fan, I like cover songs when they are done well as (or sometimes better than) the well-known versions.

Also good on this album is "Don't Ruin It For The Rest Of Us", a great honky-tonk style song. About the only song I didn't like at all was "I Wish That Wasn't All". Overall I like Nichols as a singer, but a little less melancholy and more upbeat songs would have earned a 5 star rating.

When I first listened to Joe Nichols' Revelations my overall feeling was that it was a little average. But, upon listening to it again I quickly changed my mind. The songs tell great stories and are easy to listen to; not to mention how relaxing Nichol's deep voice is. He sounds great on all the tracks and mixes up the mood with more upbeat songs like Don't Ruin it for the Rest of Us and What's a Guy Gotta Do? A great CD to have for the ride home from work or school to help wind down.

This is the new Joe Nichols. He started his revalation with the video "if nobody belived in you". It was a good video but a little chezzy. Joe is a very good singer and he is one of my favorates.
