4 out of 5 stars Missing 1 Song!.......2006-04-01

Buyers Beware: The song by Tommy James & the Shondells - "I Think We're Alone Now", although listed on CD back insert is NOT listed on top face of CD and is missing when playing the CD! [Perhaps it was removed because of licensing...?]

5 out of 5 stars Memories From the Past.......2001-10-17

Put it in the CD player of my car, and I zoomed back to my teen years in 1967. What radio really was like in the '60s, with nothing comparing with it today. Music from an age of innocence, playing in an age of terror. If you want to bring back memories of the past, buy this CD and others of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Turn back the clock.......1998-06-22

Radio as I grew up with. Dr. Don Rose is a truly great DJ, and we get a feel of Atlanta in 1967. Stick this CD in the car player and drive down the road and time goes backwards. Oldie lovers will play this one over and over. The commercials make it just as realistic. Where are you today Dr. Rose?

5 out of 5 stars the greatest guitar player period.......2007-06-15

I've never encountered anyone who could touch this guy. He is just insane as a guitar player. this is a fantastic album that shows Danny is a complete master of any style he chose to play. What a shame to have so much God given talent and then take your own life. I'm sure he worked very hard to get chops like this but alot of his talent had to be a gift from above. If you really want to get an idea of just how good this guy was just check out his hot licks videos, available right here on amazon. You have to see it to believe it. Don't listen to these others who have given these bad reviews for the most lame reasons. One guy is whining about amazon and gives the cd a bad review. Danny is the star here, just listen to Him. You won't be sorry, I PROMISE.

1 out of 5 stars very bad.......2006-03-14

i feel i was cheated by you!!! on the offer list you say the album has 12 songs but in fact it has only 8.!!! i've been cheated out of 4 songs.!!!-- i strongly feel you should compensate me for the cheating. i've become a regular customer but i am not going to buy any more cd's from you now, unless you make it right.!!! also, what about my order of the"hell casters"cd.,that i ordered app. 2 months ago & fully paid for it.also, it' not worth it for me to send you back the cd.yoram ben el lonay

2 out of 5 stars GATTON'S CHANCE FOR THE BIG TIME, AND HE BLEW IT...........2005-09-29

About five years before this album came out, Danny Gatton started gaining notoriety as being touted the "world's greatest unknown guitarist" from magazines such as Guitar Player and Musician. This led to an Elektra recording contract, the first release being the all instrumental 88 Elmira Street. For his second Elektra release, it seems if Danny wanted to be more commerically successful. His answer to that would have songs that featured guest vocalists. Unfortunately the results are lame at best. If anybody could play rockabilly guitar Gatton could, but add a lame-assed vocal track on Sun Medley from Delbert McClinton (overrated hanger-on if there ever was one) and the song just sandbags to the point of madness. You hear better singing in an Eveleth,MN biker bar than the hack job this James Lewis dude belches out on Beat Of The Night. It makes me wonder if Gatton WAS trying to reach a larger audience with these moves, which audience was he trying to target anyway? By far the strongest tracks ( and some of Gatton's best) are the instrumental ones. He does something utterly phenomonal with Harlem Nocturne. Other standouts include Funhouse and the Sleepwalk-esque Tragedy.

There is no debating that Danny Gatton was a remarkable guitarist, but guitar playng alone cannot save a suckfest of an album such as this one. Not only do I strongly suggest staying away from this album, I INSIST THAT YOU DO.

5 out of 5 stars Gatton at his Telecaster best!!.......2004-12-11

Excellent, excellent album - if you are new to Danny's music, this is the cd to check out. Not only do you get a feeling for his virtuosic performance on most of the popular genres of music (rockabilly, jazz and country), but the other performers and performances are right there with him. Danny Gatton's musical gift was his ability to mix and match many musical styles (kind of like a musical Chinese menu) and make it look effortless. The musical community surely misses his great and unequaled to this day talent.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2004-01-21

[Reviewer note: This review was updated on 02/07/2005.]

I spent a fair amount of time searching for a Danny Gatton CD and, to be honest, it was a little difficult deciding on something. I sampled tracks from all of his available CDs but none really jumped out as being a sure thing.

Eventually though, based on the samples, I settled on this one. Despite the fact that I didn't have extremely high expectations to begin with, I was still disappointed. There just isn't very much to like about this CD. (I don't want to give the impression that I think the CD is horrible, though. But it felt stale and over-produced to me.)

Now that I've gotten some more Danny Gatton CDs and have a bit more experience to share, I'll say to those who are new to Danny Gatton that this is not the CD to start with. (Later, you can come back and add this if you'd like to complete your collection). I would instead recommend one, or all, of the following for a first Danny Gatton CD: 88 Elmira Street, Unfinished Business, or Portraits.

4 out of 5 stars Great Example of Radio as It Used to Be.......2005-08-22

Back when Bill Drake's "More Music" format first hit the airways, I decried it as the death of creative rock radio as we knew it. Forty years later, I bought Cruisin' 1965 and welcomed it back with open arms. Robert W. Morgan was quick, witty and as smooth as butter, using the KHJ jingles and hitting musical posts like the master he was. When the Cruisin' series first came out, I complained because it didn't have the greatest hits from each year; imagine 1965 without The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Stones or Motown. But in reality, Cruisin' 1965 sounds just the way Top 40 was back then, with a pastiche of hits that ran the gamut from The Ramsey Lewis Trio to Roger Miller. You buy a Cruisin' album to rediscover a fabulous retro radio experience . . . and there were few better than Robert W. Morgan on Boss Radio KHJ! The one flaw? Increase Records lost the rights to some of the songs on the originally released vinyl series. On a tightly produced radio reconstruction, that can be the kiss of death. On Cruisin' 1965, the surgery is a bit more arthroscopic, so it is still a great listen. But the surgical cuts still cost it one star in my book!

3 out of 5 stars OMIT THE NAME GAME AND WE'VE GOT A KEEPER!.......2000-09-18

To this day I can remember seeing the orange cartoon mail carrier in my local post office, "Mr. Zippy" reminding folks to USE THAT ZIP CODE! I loved "Eve of Destruction," the social commentary against the Vietnam War.

On 2/12/2000 I heard Barry McGuire, along with John Michael Talbot sing this wonderful social classic and that was such a treat. I also loved the 1965 Studebaker commercial. (I was a child of a Ford Falcon sedan household, loved that car so much that I would, 30 years later name my dog after that very cool car).

I would have given this a 4 or maybe a 5 star rating, but "the Name Game" cost it a star (or two). I just can't stand that idiotic piece and have found it impossible to listen to ever since I was a very young child. In adult life, I find I hate the "Name Game" as much now as I did as a child. It was the very first thing I hated to the point of being unable to listen to. It is sheer torture.

4 out of 5 stars A real blast from somebody's past!.......1999-08-21

Those of you who grew up listening to the incredible (and now late, great) Robert W. Morgan on KHJ in LA will get a kick out of this album. It's essentially an aircheck from one summer day in 1965, shortly after KHJ went on the air and basically took over LA pop radio for five years. The songs are all hits of the day in their full versions, unlike a real aircheck where the songs would be abbreviated. This is a great album in the series.

5 out of 5 stars WIBG's Joe Niagra recreates the radio of '57.......2000-06-07

It's hard to remember that radio used to be more than a medium for playing commercials. Sure, it did plenty of that, but it was also a community focal point, and never more so during the teen empowerment of the late 50s.

The Crusin' series recreates these years with full radio programs that blend cherry-picked hits of the era with period commercials, radio spots and brilliant radio personalities.

Joe Niagra of Philadelphia's WIBG kicks it off with "If you're ready, this rockin' bird will fly!" and he doesn't let-up. His rhyming patter is spellbinding, and the music, ads and station promos all fit together into a brilliant, live work of art.

If you were lucky enough to be glued to the AM radio in your Chevy in '57 this is a terrific trip down memory lane. If you didn't have that fortune, this is a good chance to enjoy a taste of what you missed.

5 out of 5 stars Takes You Right Back..........2007-06-15

I think "Cruisin' 1962" is the best of the Cruisin' series. I play it frequently at social gatherings--in particular, the 4th of July and at swim parties and cocktail parties--and it always, always elicits inquiries and positive responses. The collection of songs is great and perhaps one of the greatest doo-wop style songs, "What's Your Name?" by Don & Juan, is the high-light of this set. The radio ads are fun, and listeners from "back in the day" remember many of the products, ironically enough, fondly: for example, "My mom smoked L & M cigarettes" (remember cigarette ads on TV and radio?). One ad, in particular, always stuns me and leaves me breathless...for the new and upcoming 1963 Chryslers; the radio announcement is a little cryptic and startling, in hind-sight, as this Dallas Chrysler lot is located "out by Love Field," which, as we know, would be the site of John Kennedy's disembarking from Air Force One in Dallas on November 22, 1963, the date of his assassination in Dealey Plaza. What we now can see (or hear, rather) as historical tidbits provide a deeper political and social context and interesting counterpoints to this seemingly frivolous collection of pop music: For example, we hear "Solider Boy" from The Shirelles, just as the Viet Nam War is beginning to escalate. But this music takes us to, let's say, summer 1962; we spent the day at the pool, and tonight, the circus is in town, or maybe we'll go see Marilyn Monroe in "The Misfits," and the summer will be seemingly endless. The very next year, the world will change, and America will see violence in the streets of Dallas and, as Sam Cooke will tell us, "A change is gonna come." But for now, our love is sealed with a kiss and we can Wah-tusi and Twist the night away. See you in September...dd

4 out of 5 stars Crusin' again.......2005-10-19

After being temporarily unvailable, the Crusin' series seems to be back again, with the same clever cover art and hopefully with the same entertaining and exhuberant back cover notes. Unfortunately, it is two song short of its original edition (The Peppermint Twist and The Locomotion), however, still there is what made this particular record great, Russ "Weird Beard" Knight, probably the best of the bunch. Whatever may be lacking in Musical content is easily made up for with his amazing talent.

The absolute best D.J. in New York during the 1963-1965 time when WMCA with its Good GUY Sweat Shirts and "Name it and Claim it" contests ruled the airwaves. The cd has been reduced in size from the original LP release because of legal problems. Would love more live shows of BMR

5 out of 5 stars Preserving a lost era.......2001-03-11

This is one of those CDs you don't buy for the music per se (though all the tracks here are just fine, thanks), but for the ambience. This recreates an hour of listening to WMCA in New York in 1963, complete with commercials, jingles, weather, high school contests, and DJ patter. You don't have to have grown up in New York to enjoy this blast from the past, you just have to be a fan of the sort of personality-driven radio experience that doesn't exist anymore. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Cruisin 1963.......2000-05-15

The ads fade in to the songs, just like on the radio. If you just want to hear the music, this CD isn't for you.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Rock and Roll time capsule-Never Again.......1998-10-09

This is a very special album. It takes you back in time. Just think, if your were living in New york in 1963 you would have been a big listener to the WMCA GOOD GUYS,. Pleae pay close attention to the dialog . "The Bemmer" mentions some very key inside people.. You have to be a Record Bis Person from the Al and Dicks era to really get some yaks .....THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER WMCA, OR B. MITCHELL REED....

5 out of 5 stars A Ride in the Way-Back Machine - In you own car!.......2007-03-21

For those of us who were young teens in the Boston area in the 1960's, the radio station to be 'with' (AM, of course) was WMEX -"1510, Color Radio," and the DJ to listen to - especially on Friday and Saturday nights was old 'aching adenoids' Arnie ("Woo-Woo") Ginsberg. Originally released many years ago on cassette and later as a CD, the Cruisin' Series includes this gem - a compilation of one evening's Arnie Ginsberg Show on WMEX in 1961. Other pieces of the Cruisin' collection each have about an hour of play from one station and one DJ in one city during one year. This is the only one from Boston in that era - and it is absolutely fabulous. Like Mr. Peabody and his pet boy Sherman (from "Mr. Peabody's Improbable History" segment of the "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show") going for a ride in their WayBack machine, listening to this CD subtracts 45 from my life for about 50 minutes.... especially when listening to it in the car when driving alone.

This CD is much more than the musical selections which are, in-and-of themselves, great and includes the original (60's)versions of:
- Blue Moon / The Marcels
- My True Story / The Jive Five
- Johnny B. Goode / Chuck Berry
- But I Do / Clarence "Frogman" Henry
- Purple People Eater / Sheb Wooley
- Tossin' and Turnin' / Bobby Lewis
- Runaway / Del Shannon
- Barbara Ann / The Regents
- Ya Ya / Lee Dorsey, and
- Hideaway / Freddie King

But it is MUCH more than the singles that are played. It is Arnie Ginsberg and his 'rap' chatter about upcoming 'hops' (dances), WMEX sponsored contests and especially the commercials from that year for:
- The Heart Fund
- Adventure Car Hop ("... follow Rt. 1 in Saugus.... Home of the Ginsburger!")
- The New Widetrack Pontiac
and many others.

So, it is unlike listening to a CD of oldies. It is more like turning on your radio and being transported back to 1961, however briefly. It feels good to listen to - and can't help but evoke a long lost (or misplaced) memory or two for anyone who heard it back then.

I'm not sure how nifty this will sound to someone who grew up (or not) in the Greater Boston Area - but for any boomer who did, this CD is an absolute MUST.

5 out of 5 stars Boston's Best.......2004-06-10

I grew up in the late '50s and early '60s listening to WMEX. This really brings back fond memories. Just hearing Arnie do the "woo-woo" brought a smile to my face. The songs are great, although I wish they had all the songs from the vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars The best oldies album ever!.......2000-10-07

This is the album that got me hooked on oldies. It was a Friday night back in 1973. My Army buddy, Rupert Joyner, and I were just sitting around the barracks and he put this 8-track on. I liked it so much he let me borrow it to play in my 55 Chevy. I wore it out riding all over Homestead Florida. I'll never forget, it was a great time in my life.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh, when radio was real..........2002-03-20

I grew up in Baltimore listening to Johnny Dark on Radio 60 WCAO. To me, Johnny Dark WAS radio; the smooth, unerring voice that always said just the right thing at just the right time. So I guess maybe I'm a little biased in reviewing this CD, but what the heck - this ain't Rolling Stone! When I listen to Cruisin' 1968, it reminds me of the way radio should be, fun and exciting. I spent 20 years in the radio business, and I am proud to count Johnny among my early mentors. Although WCAO has undergone several format changes over the years (they currently air a Black Gospel format), Johnny still plays those great oldies on Saturday nights on WBIG-FM in Washington. Rock on, Johnny Dark!

5 out of 5 stars humor in TN. from enraged customer.......2006-02-21

The remarkable Cruisin' series...first on LP records then CD's
was designed for people who enjoy hearing 50's and 60's DJ patter and the nostalgia of the commercials of the day as much or more than the music. If you are interested in just music look elsewhere. I'll bet George Lucas designed the well known
American Graffiti soundtrack after the Cruisin' series.
The reviewer from Memphis is worth a chuckle. Memphis...home to Elvis and great AM radio itself 40 plus years ago...obviously
this review is by someone who grew up with MTV not AM Top 40.

5 out of 5 stars Cruisin' 1964.......2004-01-14

To the person who was shocked that there was a news bulletin about an armed robbery while the music played...You must be too young to remember "real radio". That is the beauty of the Cruisin' series - you get to hear the innocense, the newness of pop radio and rock 'n' roll. What you hear on this (and other CDs in the series) is what radio of the 50's and 60's was like. Yes, they talked over the intro but they played the entire song - they didn't cut if off 15 seconds from the end! You can't find radio like this anymore! Look at the mixture of songs on this CD - they are from many genre.

If you listend to Top 40 radio in the 50's or 60's this is the series to get. You can't explain to anyone what Top 40 radio was like in those times; you have to hear it. This is great! Now my kids know what real radio sounded like. The series is all good!

5 out of 5 stars Very Fun CD to listen to.......2003-02-26

I bought this CD when I was a teenager, I think I was 16, which was 12 years ago and loved it great songs and the dj is fun, I think hearing those oldies as they were back then is very awesome. Great Songs and the commercials are fun too. Recommend to all.

5 out of 5 stars Disagree Again........2002-09-24

For the guy from England, yeah i never heard of WHX either, but I heard of WHK in Cleveland, but in defference to the other reviewier, WKYC was the station to listen to from Cleveland in those days. You both are probably too young to temember when this stuff was new. And yes, Johnny Holiday is still around. Having lived in Washington, as I said in my Cruising 1969 reveiw, he was on WWDC in the morning, opposite old Harve. Basically changed the dial back and forth. He still is heard regionally, in the DC area doing football play by play and pregame shows; as well as nattionally on ABC radio doing sports news.

As the case with the entire Cruisin' series; this one is just as excellent as all the others.

5 out of 5 stars not known over in England................2002-09-02

The beauty of this series for British Fans of pop music is that in 1964, in particular, the songs of this year,s Cruisin, cd were almost all non-hits in the UK. "Remember Walking in the Sand" and "Chapel of Love" were hits but the rest were not known to the masses.British pop was the in thing of course. We had no such thing as the radio stations reprised on this series at home but l964 saw the beginning of the off-shore "pirate stations" which were based on American Top 40 Radio. You discovered The Beatles, we discovered Rock and Roll Radio. Oh, I almost forgot - this cd is 45minutes of great sounds, commercials and excellent quality. I feel nostalgic for WHX Radio - and I never heard it! That,s how good it is. There,s not a duff album in the series. Brilliant.
