4 out of 5 stars Real close but not quite..............2001-01-08

My first experience with Barber was Price's recording of "Knoxville", and it will always remain, for me, the definitive recording of that work. The version here is certainly good, but it misses the lyrical charm that Price brings to the piece. As far as I know, the Price version is out of print (along with, to my horror, her amazing work on Antony and Cleopatra, Barber's woefully underrated opera), but if you ever get the chance, track it down.

5 out of 5 stars But Fischer-Dieskau sings "French toast"!.......2000-03-24

These are all essential recordings, of course, for the reasons other reviewers mention. I'll simply point out that this recording of Dover Beach (also available in other issues) with the Juilliard and F-D is the notorious one where he gets the words wrong. Instead of singing, "On the French coast the light gleams and is gone..." he gives it as "...French toast..." Of course, he delivers this beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Rocking gently, talking gently.......2000-03-04

Essential Barber. Steber's "Knoxville" is the earliest recording. She commissioned it, if I'm not mistaken. Her feeling for the text, her phrasing of it is remarkable. Her diction is perfect. The rest of this collection is an American treasure. Too bad it doesn't include Samuel Barber's recording of himself singing "Dover Beach", but barring that DFD's is the best on records. Leontyne Price's "Hermit Songs" are the classic recording. How could you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......1999-12-09

This fabulous collection is required listening for anyone who loves Barber's music and/or great singing. Naturally Leontyne Price is wonderful in the HERMIT SONGS, likewise Fischer-Dieskau in Dover Beach -- but don't overlook Steber's historic performance of KNOXVILLE, which she commissioned, nor Arroyo's dramatic tour-de-force in the powerful ANDROMACHE'S FAREWELL, a late work. The Samuel Barber Foundation website (samuelbarber.org) will soon be operating with news/reviews of new & reissued recordings of Barber's work.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical performances.......1999-07-16

This is a delightful recording! First, "Knoxville"'s lyrics are from "A Death In The Family", by James Agee -- one of the most evocative prose writers. Second, Barber's composition is wonderfully sympathetic with Agee's lyrics. Third, Ms Steber's dynamic voice alternately stands out from the orchestra, then melds into it, as the focus of the lyrics changes. (Listen to the way that the line "Now is the night one blue dew." flows from her voice to the woodwinds: dreamy.) The flip side is equally delightful, and on the whole probably a bit more light hearted (if not as introspective) as the first. I especially love the song "A Monk And His Cat": thanks to the magic of Mr. Barber and Ms. Price, a 12th(?) century monk, obviously besotted by his cat, speaks clearly to us all these centuries later. . . .and isn't it wonderful to hear the composer himself accompany Ms. Price? You will love this CD. (Report back here, if you're not satisfied.)

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Is it surprising that a master of German art song would produce a jazz album? Not if he's Thomas Quasthoff, who has sung jazz since his university days and maintains an infectious enthusiasm for it. From breezily light baritone to sexy bass (he rumbles very comfortably around low F), Quasthoff totally adapts his sound to the music's needs, confidently attacking certain notes "white" before adding vibrato. The American "r" - so difficult for foreign artists - does draw undue attention, as do certain vowel sounds, but otherwise Quasthoff's delivery of English is convincing. He sings much of the music comparatively "straight" (one frequently wishes he'd indulge in some really off-the-wall improvisation), but he definitely knows his way around this material. Highlights are a cool "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," a jaunty "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive," and especially haunting versions of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and Duke Ellington's "In My Solitude." Very enjoyable, too, is the growling conclusion of Stevie Wonder's "You and I." Quasthoff is supported by a strong ensemble, including Germany's most gifted jazz trumpeter, Till Brönner, and the excellent pianist Alan Broadbent. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchestra, however, brings an unwelcome "101 Strings""flavor to six numbers. --Roger Pines

2 out of 5 stars Wallowing in the worst register of his voice..........2007-06-06

Thomas Quasthoff must have reached a certain benchmark in sales at Deutsche Grammophon to be allowed this indulgence, another unnecessary crossover CD from a media-feted classical singer.

Oy, but a great classical singer he's not. And he's even a worse jazz singer. As this collection shows, he has listened to his Ella Fitzgerald records faithfully enough to imitate her breathy, conversational delivery in the middle register, while lacking her innate sense of coloring and rubato. His is a dull, foursquare delivery, which he consciously tries to loosen by issuing a pathetic growl now and then to prove he's gettin' down. And just the SOUND of his voice, its timbre, in this conversational register is patently unpleasant. As mentioned above, his overcompensation with r's and with certain vowels makes his delivery even more studied and stilted.

However, when he soars above the staff, as he does in "You and I," his voice gains considerably in power and beauty. This happens all too infrequently, unfortunately.

The song program contains some real clunkers, such as "Secret Love," "There's a Boat That's Leavin' Soon for New York," and the execrable "My Funny Valentine." Just compare Thom's "What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" to Barbra's (from the "Way We Were" album) to see how straight and uninspired our German friend's rendition is. "In My Solitude" is almost unlistenable.

To this CD's credit, I must compliment the luscious, clear sound of the recording and the judiciously crafted orchestral arrangements. Ultimately, though, this is just another one of those vocal crossover albums that will end up in the cut-out bins with scores of others already gathering dust.

5 out of 5 stars Good job Quasthoff!.......2007-05-30

Is your opinion that classical singers can't sing jazz?
Being a classical singer my self I know how hard it can be to sing jazz.
Quasthoff proves with this CD that he is a true musician and separates the two different ways of singing very well.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!.......2007-03-20

Being a great admirer of T. Quasthoff in his classical performance and a jazz lover, I didn't hesitate to order this cd. Moreover, the jazz impro bonus on The Voice let me think that Mr Quasthoff's voice could match perfectly the jazz style. The result is beyond the expectations. Mr Quasthoff sings these jazz standards as if he had done that all his life long, and the result is astonishing. It is even further enhanced by the great recording! So, order this CD without hesitation....

2 out of 5 stars Not jazz.......2007-03-11

Quasthoff has a phenomenal voice, but he should keep his day job. He is not a jazz singer. Although this may be some German idea of jazz, it isn't jazz, and the musicians do not seem to understand jazz at all. The songs are not sung or played like jazz, and many of the songs are nowhere near jazz at all. If "Secret Love" is jazz, Doris Day must be Billie Holiday in disguise. This is a novelty piece, but one listening is a gracious plenty; I stopped sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Quasthoff shines once again, & sounds just like a Rat-Packer!.......2007-02-23

I have most of the superb Thomas Quasthoff's albums, and am always interested in hearing him do different music. Singing these jazz numbers, he sounds just like a member of the Rat Pack! He always sings authentically, and always with great originality. In this jazz album, Mr. Quasthoff sings with no trace of a German accent, and he captures the style and razzle-dazzle of these songs. The liner notes indicate that these songs were selected to form a song cycle of the artist's own emotional experiences.

My favorites are the Stevie Wonder song "You and I" and "They All Laughed." Other composers featured are George Gershwin, Michel Legrand, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, and others. There is a mix of the upbeat and humorous (Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, Can't We Be Friends, They All Laughed), and the more reflective and serious (Smile, In My Solitude).

There is quite a bit of artistry involved in the interpretations here. For example, in Duke Ellington's "In my Solitude," there is disturbing and eerie quality, particularly in the instrumental section following the line "I know that I'll soon go mad." Special mention must be made of the outstanding instrumental contributions, the excellent Till Bronner on trumpet and Alan Broadbent on piano, as well as the back up orchestra, which is essential to the interpretations (such as in the Duke Ellington, mentioned above).

This entire album is masterfully sung by Mr. Quasthoff in his own unique style. I highly recommend this album, as I do all his other albums. I only wish that Thomas Quasthoff would begin recording albums of all his current concerts, such as Brahm's Die Schone Magelone, and Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Much of the public, myself included, can never get enough of this voice and more albums.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar conclusion to a great series.......2004-12-15

This the 10th and final CD in a survey of Vivaldi's sacred choral music. It takes maybe a wee bit of cheek to release the most famous piece, the Gloria RV 589, as part of the last CD in the series. However, the wait is worthwhile. A wonderful rendition. Aptly timed and well executed. The soloists are perfect.

Additionally, there are two other bits that are worth noting (and buying): a recently discovered "nisi dominus" by Vivaldi that's both powerful and delightful in equal measure, and finally (to round off the series)..a guest appearance! A setting of the Gloria from Giovanni Ruggieri, an older contemporary of Vivaldi's that Michael Talbott and Robert King suggest was an early and clear influence on Vivaldi as he wrote his own works (listen to it...sounds like it influenced Handel too.)This is a great piece in its own right and is tremendously played by yon King et al. Great addition.

There may be more "representative" CDs from this series that beter display the breadth of Vivaldi's sacred works, but if you're looking for just one (and are aiming for the famous Gloria at the same time) this is a fantastic place to start. All in all, the sort of quality one comes to expect from King's Consort. Can't wait to see what comes next from them.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vaughan Williams operatic masterpiece.......2003-12-26

None of Vaughan Williams' five operas have entered the repertoire despite the fact that they all contain glorious music. 'Sir John in Love' ought to be staged from time to time but 'Riders to the Sea' is a masterpice with a fatal, programming fault: it is too short. Lasting only 30-40 minutes, it is almost impossible to fit into a company's evening schedule. Happily, this length might well suit the domestic listener who has a short time at the end of the day and does not want to embark on a three hour marathon.
The composer does not call it an opera but a 'setting' of a one act play of the same name by the Irish playright, J.M.Synge. It is the story of a fishing family on an island off the west coast of Ireland. The mother, Maurya, has already lost her father, husband and some of her sons to the sea and the action starts with the finding of a drowned man whose clothes fit the description of those belonging to her son Michael. Her worst fears are confirmed yet her remaining son, Bartley, insists on going to the horsefair on the mainland despite her pleading. He, too, is drowned and Maurya is left with her two daughters. The sea has taken virtually everything from her but, surprisingly, Maurya rises above her grief - "They are all gone now, and there isn't anything more the sea can do to me."

The music and text are closely integrated in a symphonic way. The score calls for a sea machine which is used in an atmospheric way similar to the way RVW uses the wind machine in Sinfonia Antartica. There are no numbers and the atmosphere is somewhat grim throughout, as can be imagined. It needs close listening to reveal all its secrets. Maurya's final, long aria is very beautiful and emotionally very powerful and the opera ends in unexpected repose.

The three Chaucer Rondels, 'Merciless Beauty', is here recorded with tenor and string trio. The disc is completed by the cantata 'Epithalamion', which is something of a rarity. Epithalamion is a song or poem in praise of the bride and bridegroom and the composer's cantata derives from a masque he wrote in 1939 based on poems by Edmund Spenser. The dances were removed to produce the work which is for baritone, chorus, piano, flute and string orchestra. Lasting for over half an hour, it is a considerable work in the composers most lyrical vein and it ought to be better known.

All the performances are first rate, particularly Helen Watts as Maurya. The recording of the opera dates from 1971 but wears its age lightly. The other recordings date from 1987.

    5 out of 5 stars criminally neglected.......2003-09-13

Many bands from liverpool have been feted through the years. one that is sadly not remembered too often are the icicle works. one hit single in the us, two in the uk and then they were forgotten.
bicycle was their second album and was where they hit their stride. it is literate rock music with a connosieurs eye on the past.

mcnab was always a lyrical lyricist, sometimes powerful, sometimes delicate, sometimes political, always honest. the songs are clever but not clever clever like, for example, costello. musically the works are romantic and stirring without ever over-egging the pudding like the waterboys. inside their powerful arrangement the trio maintained a delicate touch.

here is an album without a weak track.long neglected begging to be loved.

5 out of 5 stars For less than the "Small Price of a Bicycle", pick this up!.......2002-05-03

Very well done rock music that does hold your complete attention from start to finish. It's all here: An Anthem-like, pulse-pounding album complete with touches of melancholy and dashes of mayhem, "Small Price of a Bicycle" certainly delivers on all of these fronts. It may just be The Icicle Works most complete and satisfying collection of songs. That being said, how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Album From The Icicle Works.......2001-01-26

I've been a fan of The Icicle Works since I first heard Birds Fly (Whisper To a Scream) in the early eighties. I believe that they are one of the two most underrated bands to have come from that decade. (The other being the Chameleons.) However, if you have never listened to The Icicle Works don't be put off because they are an eighties band. Their sound is not what one typically thinks of as the "eighties" sound. They are an incredible band whose first three albums are a treat for the ears. From the raw power of their self titled debut, to their third album, and what I believe was their masterpiece, If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song, this band never disappoints.

The Icicle Works second album, The Small Price Of A Bicycle, is another gem. It starts off with the unbelievably great Hollow Horse, one of their best songs ever, and ends with the emotionally powerful Conscience Of Kings. But that's not all. In between these two songs are eight unforgettable songs. Songs that I keep singing to myself long after the music has stopped. The Small Price Of A Bicycle creates its own atmosphere and maintains it throughout. This is an exquisite album and one that any Icicle Works fan will want to have in their collection.
