4 out of 5 stars Great album by an often overlooked group.......2007-01-04

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap had a distinctive sound that still comes through today. This CD has all of their best hits with a few others added. If you are a fan, this is a must-have.

2 out of 5 stars Oldies Lover.......2006-11-07

There are a lot of songs on this CD that I don't remember & don't really care for. However, the sound quality is good. Take the time to listen to all the samples before buying.

5 out of 5 stars A real time machine trip (ten stars).......2006-03-08

Your kidding me! This takes me back to a hangout called "the barn" and my old girlfriend Debby. Boy those were the days. This is real music to relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Puckett-Greatest Hits.......2005-09-19

It is a great CD- am enjoying it immensely!

3 out of 5 stars Another Gary Puckett Greatest Hits?.......2005-08-02

It seems like there are at least a dozen "Greatest Hits" or "Best of" collections by Gary Puckett, and this one is probably not one of the better ones. I think that each of the collections include the real hits of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, "Woman, Woman," "Young Girl," "Lady Willpower," "This Girl Is a Woman Now," and "Over You." After that each of the collections includes "stuff."

The "stuff" on this CD includes "To Love Somebody" by the Bee Gees. Gary Puckett's voice is an excellent match for this cover of the Bee Gees' classic. There is a cover of "Kentucky Woman" by Neil Diamond in this collection. I know the remaining songs, "Let's Give Adam and Eve Another Chance," "Could I," and "Daylight Stranger" have all appeared on other Gary Puckett collections.

Gary Puckett has an excellent, mellow voice. When his voice matches the material the result is outstanding. However, there are a lot of Gary Puckett collections that exist, and this one is very short, under a half hour. If you are only interested in the top 40 hits, nearly any of these collections (including this one) will give you those. Then you have to decide which of the other songs on the collection you want as well.

My rating is not so much for the material on this collection, which is okay, but for the fact that there are better collections available and it seems as though Gary Puckett has been repackaged too many times with the same core material. The numerous collections should be pared down to a couple. One collection should have half dozen songs or so and the other collection could be like "A Golden Classics Collection," which has an incredible 27 songs. Choose wisely!

5 out of 5 stars One Of JD's Best.......2007-03-03

I love the tracks on this one. However, its really a shame that they didn't re-release this in John's lifetime. With many great re- releases of his since his passing, I'm glad to have many now which were unavailable before. Except for the fact that RCA shamefully had to wait until his untimely demise for the great cash in with these releases. Well at least we have them now..

5 out of 5 stars Windsong John Denver.......2006-08-09

The music is glorious. I'm a big fan of John Denver, and this is my favorite of his ablums. I highly reccomend it for anyone who likes John Denver.

4 out of 5 stars John Denver at his best........2005-07-28

By the time this album was released John Denver had practically become a household name. He had carved out his own little notch in music history. With his fan base secure he seems to have, in WINDSONG, put together an album that catered to his fans. Somehow, through the combination of lyrics and his own unique vocal sound, Denver is able to take the listeners mind off of whatever is occupying it and enables the listener to relax as he/she gives into reflection and imagination.

As I read the reviews here at Amazon.com I began to notice something I don't often find in many album reviews, and that is a lack of a few stand out tracks that appeal to all. Many albums have a few tracks, usually the ones that get a lot of radio play, that everyone comments on. The rest of the songs usually receive little or no attention. Here, in WINDSONG, I've noticed that while most people like the entire album, save a song or two, most have different favorites. I can't identify any stand out songs that drown out the others.

My favorite two songs are "Looking for Space" and "Fly Away." It would take too much time to try and describe just how these songs affect me. Suffice it to say that they, each in their own way, relate to me on a personal level. It's like Denver captured my thoughts, reflections and hopes and put them to song. As for the rest of the album, I enjoy all the songs with "Calypso" being another favorite.

Here's a little trivia for those of you who like "Fly Away." In case you've wondered what female sings back up on that song you may be surprised to find out that it is a young and not quite famous, at that time, Olivia Newton John.

5 out of 5 stars Breezes.......2005-04-29

You can hear wind scraping over bare rocks and miniature plants of the alpine tundra, violently bifurcating through forests of coniferous trees, and you can feel wind swirling over the churning waters of a river, and you can see wind ripple and flow in waves through the deciduous leaves of aspen.

How would someone translate this invisible warmth into a song? John Denver begins by metaphorically expounding upon the strengths and human-like emotions and cries of the wind, announcing that the wind offers wisdom and to listen to her, finally culminating into an aural humming, representing the wind itself. It is a beautiful testament to the shifting and settling of air.

This is the original recording of the song, and John Denver re-recorded it twice in his later years (e.g. on the Very Best of album), taking advantage of newer and better recording materials. While these versions are like listening to Denver in surround-sound-super-stereo, and are almost more passionate in verse, the original track on the Windsong album will always be the first way original fans heard it. It commands more respect with its age.

Windsong, as an album, is filled with Denver's trademark layered-hums and drawn out singing styles that, I feel, make the songs more atmospheric and spiritual. This includes Cowboy's Delight, an almost haunting approach to mountains and the (to me) light that strikes them during different hours of the day. From the darkness of the Hour of the Wolf, to the dim outlines of the zodiacal light; the golden-pink bathing from the sunrise, and the noon sun sparkling off gold and muscovite, and biotite and garnets in granite, to fiery rocks in the sunset and purplish-pink lulls of alpenglow, to the silvery-blue moonshine or red-blue-silvers of starlight...

Also spiritual are Looking for Space, I'm Sorry, the pseudo-minimalist Spirit, and Fly Away (to a lesser degree). Your heart will soar at Calypso's plein-aire oceans and Love is Everywhere's upbeat folk/bluegrass fiddlin'! Shipmates and Cheyenne is a slower song with a beautiful chorus, Song of Wyoming is a calm end to the album (so calm, I can never recall the tune), and Late Nite Radio is a fun quirky truck-drivin' tune. As others have pointed out, Two Shots doesn't really belong here, but it's grown on me and I appreciate it for what it is. The song just starts off a bit too loudly.

Windsong is an immediate classic, with tracks that have unfortunately been released on many other albums...ones I got to first, so I feel this album isn't entirely new to me. But I sure wish I had been around when it was released. I would've done exactly what I do today: pop it in the tape-deck of my car, and drive off into the sunshine.

4 out of 5 stars Spirit and Astronomy.......2004-04-14

I like all of the album, but "Spirit" has a special place in my heart. I was walking outdoors about 2 hours ago, and the song just sprung to mind. It's a wonderful song, especially for someone like me, an astronomer.

But you can do it too: just walk outdoors on a dark and bright night and look UP. Andromeda is there, and Vega lights our way... And there are those smoke rings in the galaxy (nebulae).

Now the album is at my parents place and it is very late in the night and I am longing for those songs.... Sigh

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-07-08

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's 1997 release "Marching Down Bourbon Street" is actually a compilation of tracks from their "New Orleans, Volume..." albums released between the 1970s and 1990s. As most of those albums are now out of print, this is a great buy, especially at such a good price. Anyone who's ever been to Preservation Hall knows what a great show they put on, and they sound just as tight on record. The compilation includes their best known standards like "St. James Infirmary" and "The Bucket's Got a Hole in It," and of course "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Amen," as well as technical masterpieces like "Hindustan" and "St. Louis Blues." A great purchase, highly recommended, this is fine New Orleans jazz!

5 out of 5 stars Classic New Orleans.......2001-06-25

Anyone who has visited Preservation Hall in New Orleans will truly appreciate this CD as it captures the feeling of that great joyful and music-filled room. To those who have not been blessed with that experience, this CD will certainly whet your appetite for Dixieland. I have been a fan of New Orleans Jazz for over 50 years and never tire of listening to the old standards featured here. St. James Infirmary is one of my all-time favorites and is particulary good here. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is one of the most important groups preserving and promoting this kind of music. This is also a super value and offers a good way to sample this music.

5 out of 5 stars Songs To Remember.......2007-04-05

I have the original LP. I got in when I was in french immersion school in MD back in the late 70's. I am currently teaching my children french and am so glad to see this now comes on CD. I remember every song that I sang back in elemtary and the words of the singers so clear and the voices are such a delight to hear. This album brings back so many good memories. I cannot wait to share these songs wiith my children.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2007-02-13

Our three boys (6y, 4y, and 2y) *love* this cd! We listen to it almost every day. The music is cheerful and gentle and the singers are pleasant to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Best Silly Songs for Tots.......2006-05-30

These songs are universally appealing to the 2 - 6 y.o. age group to whom I teach French. The arrangements are clear, sparkling, and very entertaining. The gregarious spirit of the album draws kids into repeating and singing along with little concern for content. As they become more interested and start asking questions, parents can find lyrics, and in some cases history, of these classic songs by entering titles into an international search engine.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2005-11-03

I am so glad I bought this and will buy it as gifts for others. The musical arrangements are lovely (to mother, young child, and baby) and Lucienne Vernay has such a beautiful, clean and simple voice. What a delight to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Wish there were more like this for kids!.......2004-05-28

I thought the songs/tunes were very nice but couldn't understand most of the lyrics even though I took years of French in college and high school. My daughter (6) doesn't seem to care. Wish I could find more bilingual songs -- I highly recommend Global Village Kids Sing and Learn CD -- they have nursery rhymes in French and English. Since the words are familiar to my daughter, she can pick up the French meaning. Does anyone know of any more bilingual music like that?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful value.......2007-07-25

I see people giving this album 2 and 3 stars for 'two' good songs. My question to them is, "What are you listening to?" This is a fine album so often overlooked and generally dismissed as that record with the "Brandy" song. In truth, I always loved this song and that's what eventually led me here to buy it. Hey, for five bucks that fantastic song is worth it alone! But I was pleasantly surprised when I got the CD and listened to it in it's entirety a week after purchase. What an absolutely wonderful album for only five dollars! I didn't know it was possible to get a 5 star CD for that price but it is, you simply need look no further.

For the first song, well you all know it so well so I won't go into any great detail. "Brandy" is one of the finest songs ever written. Very few songs in this world are perfect, and ladies and gentlemen this is one of them. Love it forever. As for the rest, "Jimmy Loves Mary-Ann" is probably the second best song on here as you have probably already read in the other reviews. It is very similar to "Brandy" in many ways. Good bass, good beat, and a very nice chorus. If it weren't for the existance of the title track I daresay that Looking Glass would be popularly remembered for this song instead. Two quick 5 star songs to begin with. Looking Glass trades lead singers for the next track and throughout the album creating a nice balance of voice and harmony. For instance, "Highway to Hollywood" is a more wholly upbeat track while "Are You Dreamin'" returns back to the sound already firmly established in the first two songs. "One By One" may be the only really bland track here, I just can't seem to get into it. Slower, and a little too quiet compared to the rest of this album I think. It seems out of place if you ask me. Therefore skip down to the next song "Rainbow Man", a happy, feel good tune that's suitable for the mood. "Sweet Jeremiah" kicks up the pace, injecting pure american rock and roll to the mix without comming up for air. Fast classic rock the way it should be, and "Dealing With the Devil" follows suit. A little slower than it's predecessor, it still manages to maintain that rock ballad quality. Nothing fancy, just good ole music. "City Lady" was kind of a surprise to me because it seems more sophisticated than the rest, like it's a little before it's time or something. And it has a bass line and drums that make me think vividly of some Steely Dan creation, "Gold Teeth" to be exact. This song slides suddenly but gracefully into "For Skipper", a lamenting and beautiful sea sounding ballad just suited for the seaish, coastal kind of quality that brandy posesses. A fine finish, and that's precisely the saddest thing about this album... it has to end.

Brandy is an immoveable album in music's history that somehow became forgotten along it's way. Sad really. But here for your enjoyment on CD, and honestly, you really can't find better value for a better price anywhere. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Brandy (You're a Fine Girl).......2005-10-14

I received the CD Brandy in a timely manner. I played the CD and the music was clear and good. I gave the CD to a young lady named Brandy who was born about the time the song was released.
She was thrilled with the gift and I was thrilled with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Artists.......2004-12-08

"Brandy" is fine, catchy tune with a story to tell. Great song, but not all this band was capable of.
"Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne" is another of the same.
But "Sweet Something" (on Golden Classics
Looking Glass) and "For Skipper" are jazzy and breezy works of art. The folks who say that all there is to this group is "Brandy" and "Jimmy" are missing something special because their ears are tuned to Top 40 or "Classic Rock."
Pay attention! Take time to savor the talent and musical vision of this group. Don't believe these two songs are just filler (like some of their other tunes).
While this band never broke through, they deserved more encouragement for what they were capable of, the art of "Sweet Something" and "For Skipper."
Too bad that these two songs are not on the same album as they were on the vinyl release "Subway Serenade" -- which I have from the early 1970s. These two songs are timeless gems.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Sunshine Music.......2004-10-20

Another reviewer said it best, it's the kind
of music when the world was a little more
innocent, and not as jaded. "Brandy" is a
guilty pleasure, its a great summer songs that
evokes the early 1970's, the beach, and love.
Jimmy Loves Maryanne is great as well. As others
have noted this was essentialy a harder rocking
boogie band, than is evident on their big hits.
But what a time it was, I would also suggest from
the same time "Dancing in The Moonlight"-King Harvest,
"Go All The Way" Raspberries, & "Long Cool Woman" -Hollies.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Album is Great!.......2004-02-10

While I agree that Brandy and Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne are great songs, I like the rest of the album as well. It brings back a fresher, lighter time when the world seemed like a friendly and happy place!

Thankyou for my order of this cd. Brings back great memories of good times and good music, that will always be in style. DEG

3 out of 5 stars short run time, mediocre selection.......2006-02-08

only ten songs, so only a 30 min or so run time; and of the ten songs selected, i would say that half were great, the other half were mediacore background music with no oomph..

5 out of 5 stars Still Shining.......2005-12-25

Even after Teddy Pendergrass, the most famous member left the Bluenotes the group led by Harold Melvin was still successful. My favourites include "Bad Luck Pt l, Wake up Everybody Pt l" and that ol' couples roller skating classic "If You Don't Know me by Now". Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes may not had as many hits nor lasted as long on the music scene as their contempories but the music was special and still endures. Rest in Peace, Harold.

5 out of 5 stars Love those "Part 1" songs!.......2005-10-01

I used to have a different Harold Melvin collection, but listening to them sing "Sorry I lost it" for about 5 minutes on "The Love I Lost" just got to me. I know some people need that, but I'm fine with these radio edits. Heck, I grew up listening to those versions, so I've always been used to them.
Anyway, no one makes music like this anymore. No one. Ah, back then they used real orchestras for strings. And Teddy's just working it to death! My fave vocal of his is on "Bad Luck", social commentary with a beat! Great dance music, not disco, but dance music (yeah, there's a difference!).

2 out of 5 stars Superb lyrics and music - lifeless sound.......2005-06-15

No doubt, these lyrics and music are superb; after all, this is why I purchased this CD. What wonderful memories! But, this particular CD's sound quality is lifeless and dimensionless. I didn't intend for this CD to be simply background music, as I like to become "drawn into" the recording, but that's all I can do. What a disappointment!

I have ordered many wonderful CD's from Amazon that sound great, but felt compelled to write and warn others.

I give this CD at 5-star rating for its lyrics and music, but only a 1-star for it's sound quality. With engineering like this, its no wonder so many would rather use free music-sharing services on the Internet rather than make a purchase.

4 out of 5 stars 80s flashback!.......2007-05-30

As reviewed on my blog ([..])

Tuesday, May 29, 2007
"Waiting for a star to fall"

Last week, a song came on the radio that brought back a lot of old memories from my high school days. You know, the Stone Age!

Anyway, it was by a one-hit-wonder husband/wife duo called "Boy Meets Girl."

You socks are no doubt familiar with the one hit: "Waiting for a Star to Fall."

But, there are some other pretty good songs on the self-titled album, too.

I used to play it over and over again in the cassette deck of my old 1979 Honda Civic as I scooted around the dirt and cotton fields of West Texas. So many times in fact, that the tape wore out and the lyrics became warped and I eventually had to trash it.

Fortunately, nowadays, folks like me who are still lost in the 80s can now get the soundtracks to their youth on CD!

Mine arrived today, and I've really been enjoying the good non-warped quality of the sound. And, something I almost forgot: I no longer have to sit thru a song I don't like. I can just hit the "skip" button on my CD-player. Back in the day, you either had to endure it or try to time your "fast forward" button just right, and that was next to impossible.

Anyway, if there's anything that's better than modern technology, it's an old song on the radio . . .

Originally recorded in Bailey Cathedral in 1979, the title cut of this jubilant recording remains every bit as immediate and fresh as it was the day it was made. It is impossible to feel blue upon hearing the organ pump in the name of salvation and the glorious voices of the Dynamic Clark Sisters join in praise and affirmation as one sister posits, "Is my living in vain?" and they assert in multipart harmony: "No, no, no, no-no-no! / Of course not!" Deep faith is roused by Karen Clark's positively possessed lead on "Speak Lord," the bar to worship is raised on the emphatically delivered "Ha-Ya (Eternal Life)," and the sisters are joined by their mother, Mattie Moss Clark, on the reverent "They Were Overcome (By the Word)." At the forefront of the modern black gospel movement in the late '70s and early '80s, the Clark Sisters, as proven by this magnificent disc, were and ever will be thoroughly dynamic as messengers of joy. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best out there: Clark Sisters.......2007-05-13

This cd is simply amazing! From Is my Living in Vain to Expect a Miracle you can feel the annionting these ladies have from the very begining. This cd triumphs alot of gospel cds because even in the time that it was recorded to now you can still relate to everything the Clark Sisters are saying in these songs. On this cd my favorite is Speak Lord because Karen Clark Sheard ministers in this song to every and anyone. The way she recites the scriptures makes you feel the presence of God. This cd is definetly up there with You Brought the Sunshine, Count it all Joy,He gave me Nothing to Lose and Heart and Soul. You can also see the growth and evolution of these singers over the years and as each cd comes out.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite gospel album ever, seeing as how I own it on CD and cassette. .......2006-05-21

From start to finish, this album is truly amazing.

Is My Living In Vain- All 5 sisters take turns singing parts of this, and when they get into it, it is truly magical, of course they get a little help from really cool organ and WICKED percussion , in a good way.

Ha-Ya - My favorite track . It's a discoey funk that celebrates a Hebrew tongue for Christ.

Salvation - I was listening and singing along to this song while driving home from work last night. It features the almost never featured Jacky Clark Chisholm on lead and is probably her best singing ever. Ya gotta feel bad for her , tho. Always being overshadowed by her younger sisters.

Now is the time - Gorgeous ballad with all sisters singing together.

Pure Gold - This track explains to white people why us black folk go to church. Listening to this and tell me it doesn't put you back in the church pew on a Sunday morning. A very young Karen Clark makes this number shine.

Overcome - I like the harmonies in this one. Their mother takes the lead on this one.

Speak Lord- Baby sister Karen outdoes herself again.

Expect Your Miracle - This is a Clark classic. The sisters sang this on TBN sometime in 2005 with Donnie McClurkin and Kim Burrell. Ms. Burrell honestly thought she can do better vocal acrobats than Karen. Isn't that sad?

This is a WONDERFUL CD an an excellent price. You are missing out if you haven't heard it.

5 out of 5 stars Is My Living In Vain.......2006-03-24

The songs are uplifting, insightful and certainly have carried me through some tough times. I love the title. It says it all. I really did not know who the Clark Sisters were when I purchased this item. It was the title which attracted me and I have not regretted it. I am a committed fan. Thank you for such meaningful music. bt

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Gospel CD's.......2005-10-14

Listening to the Clark Sister's is like listening to Angels.
I love every song on this CD. But my two favorites are Expect a Miracle and Salvation Means More to Me.
GOD IS THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE!!

5 out of 5 stars A must........2005-06-13

This is truly a classic gospel album, probably the best you can get from those years. The Clarck Sisters clearly remain as a top reference in the gospel music panorama, even today, and listening to this album you can know how did it begin. This is an honest, no-make-up-added recording and it has a bluessy-funky feeling, that will never get old. Musically great and God inspired, just the way a Gospel album should be. If you consider yourself a Gospel fan, I dont know how could you possibly not have this album yet.

5 out of 5 stars Country Swing at its very best!!!.......2007-01-16

Asleep at the wheel scores big time, again! If ever there was group that could begin to fill the shoes of old time country swing, AATW would have to be right there at the top of the heap, without a doubt. If you like good swing & good fiddle, this CD is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Under the X in Texas.......2007-01-11

Anything by Bob Wills is high on our list, and nobody does Bob better than Asleep at the Wheel. Great compilation of some of the greats of the greats.

5 out of 5 stars Good compilation.......2002-11-06

Swing Time is a good compilation of some of the best songs from three other albums: 10, Western Standard Time, and their out-of-print 1974 Epic self-titled album. It's hard for an individual to put together a representative "best of" collection for a group like Asleep At The Wheel because they've jumped around from one label to the next, and the labels certainly wouldn't want to cooperate with each other. This is a good pick to represent the best of their work for Sony/Epic, if you don't want to collect all their recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Only 80% good........2001-12-01

Some good stuff (especially "House of Blue Lights"), but there are better covers of "San Antonio Rose", "Walkin' the Floor Over You", and especially "Hot Rod Lincoln" (by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen ,almost as good as the original) out there.

4 out of 5 stars Just what kids like ..........2006-02-20

The Camp Songs is just what KIDS like they're nice, gross, silly and more. My kids (8 & 5) love it because the words/songs are easy to remember and they get to sing-a-long. There are a few songs that I though is not appropriate for kids but they do not seem to even notice those. Like "Bring Back My Neighbors To Me" - a song about dead neighbors.

Even with the mentioned song I will still purchase the CD. The kids love it!
