For fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, et al., this is the essential cartoon soundtrack as well as a monument to surrealism. During his 22 years as a composer for Warner Bros. animated shorts, Stalling invented the musical vocabulary of cartoons. Producer Hal Willner has lovingly assembled a sonic collage that showcases Stalling's compositional genius and uncanny ability to borrow a tune. It's a whirling collection of random moments, chock full of music you never knew you knew, from Bugs Bunny's theme from "Rabbit Fire" to Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" to Stalling's own "Woo! Woo!" Also included in the mix: outtakes from recording sessions, and several complete scores. --Heidi MacDonald
Customer Reviews:
Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18
Carl Stalling gave me the best musical education I ever had. I'm spending the rest of my life learning the titles and composers of all the hundreds of tunes I first heard in his cartoon scores. I've had this CD ever since it came out, and it still is one of my favorites.
Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.
This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.
Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.
Here we go........2006-11-16
This CD features music from the Warner Brothers cartoon film scores by Carl Stalling. There are some complete scores and also some "medleys", with clips from various cartoons strung together. Carl Stalling was a master at writing music for cartoons, but something is lost when you just hear the music without seeing the cartoon.
Stallings CDs.......2006-11-10
If you harken back to the days when you snuggled on the couch on a Saturday morning with your little ones, and ate donuts and drank juice and watched "Bugs Bunny" you will love these CDs. You'll recognize all the characters and their entrances and their pratfalls...and laugh and say "I've heard that!"...it's a walk down memory lane and a very special one, at that. I highly reccommend these to anyone who loves B Bunny.
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.
The Carl Stalling Project.......2005-09-12
Music from Warner Brothers cartoons "Golden Years" (1936-1958).
Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."
Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02
Even if you do not recognize his name, Carl Stalling is a very familiar composer. He wrote the soundtrack for many of our young lives as the composer for Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons from late 1930's to late 1970's. Hal Willner has compiled this CD that for the first time lets you hear the music on its own, and lets you realize just how much of the cartoons' impact came from Stalling's music.
Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)
Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.
Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.
I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.
As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

These 16 sides were selected from the more than 50 that guitarist Bryant and pedal steel player West cut in Los Angeles between 1951 and 1956, when they were also most in demand as country--and occasionally pop--session men. Forty years later, these are still considered the hottest, most fully realized, most musical instrumentals in the history of country. West's slashing, muscular steel lines send out sparks, while Bryant's bop-influenced, breakneck guitar cuts clean as a scalpel. Using the guitar-steel pairings of Western swing as a jumping-off point, these guys created a jazzy body of work that many guitarists are still trying to decipher. --John Morthland

Ahead of their time!!!.......2004-06-25
HOT, HOT, HOT!!! One of the best instumental albums you'll ever hear. Inventive, creative, original. As Jimmy's son points out, he was Leo's torchbearer with the tele. According to George Fullerton, Mr. Fender's right-hand man, he and Leo were at a club in Riverside, CA, looking for guitarists to "test drive" this new invention. During a set break they approached Jimmy, who took it, sat on the edge of the stage and began picking. As George related the story, all in attendance stopped what they were doing, gathered around and watched Bryant pick away. It, I'm sure, was an historic moment.
Thankfully, the combination of Mr. Bryant and Mr. Fender's invention can be heard in its purist form. Teamed up with Speedy (and that name is accurate) West, you have an album that cooks. Remember, this is the 1950s, and there are no tricks here. As pure and clean as it gets.
Be prepared to be sent into the stratosphere!
The epitome of pickin' and grinnin'.......2003-11-29
Originals and souped up country standards, played at warp speed, with sock rhythm and bop lines. My favorite is "Arkansas Traveler" as a I-vi-ii-V song instead of the traditional I-IV-I-V.
Just get it and hold onto your seat !!!!!!.......2003-03-25
My father, Jimmy Bryant, played the heck out of his Telecasters - in fact, he was the first artist to play a Fender guitar for Leo Fender. If you play guitar and have never heard him play, this may scare you to grasp the thought of him doing this in the early to mid 50's - just think about being the first to play a solid body electric guitar without having someone else to copy chops from - and it sounding like this! Hope you like it - you can read more about my dad at ...
Kind regards,
John Bryant
Where's Mary?.......2002-05-22
To those of us coming from a more Pop point of view this CD sounds like a ruralized Les Paul--lots of flash and a 2/2 beat.
The never-ending debate about which cubby hole to stuff Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant into (are they Country? C&W? Jazz? Country Jazz? Pop Country? yadda yadda yadda?) is less than interesting to me. Whatever it is they're playing, I like it.
"Stratosphere Boogie," "Arkansas Traveler" and "Flippin' The Lid" are the highlights for me. West/Bryant understood the difference between showing off by picking at 1000 miles an hour and delivering a tune with a pit of flash and panache.
Speedy West mediocre?.......2002-01-08
I saw the comments of some here about speedy west not being very good. I just wanted to say the cuts on this album are not very representative of some of his best work. There is a CD put out by a european company of about 30 tracks of stuff from his days on the tennesee ernie ford show that are hands down much better than this material.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas Wolk

The Carl Stalling Project Vols 1 & 2.......2007-01-11
Are the names Mel Blanc, I. Freleng or Chuck Jones familiar to you? Then you will get a charge out of these albums as they remind you of Warner Brothers cartoons you saw. I even used these albums instead of "spooky music" for the trick-or-treaters at Halloween, and got appreciative comments from the parents who recognized the music. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Better Stalling's CD.......2006-05-09
As well as Stalling Project Part I, These recordings are more modern fidelity, less classic and more musical techniques. The improvisations appreciate me more than Part I. I like all tracks especially one from "Zoom and Bored" Salute Maestro!!!!

The Carl Stalling Project Volume 2.......2005-09-12
More music from Warner Brother Cartoons 1936 to 1958.
Carl Stalling was one of the foremost composers of music for cartoons and wrote virtually all of the scores for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. This is a compilation of some complete soundtracks and other snippets. In my opinion, this disk is not quite as well done as "The Carl Stalling Project Volume I."
A nice follow up.......2003-03-09
I really did like the slice-and-dice format of the first disc : I think it helped keep that cartoon zaniness without the visuals. I would recommend both volumes - I listen to them alot while I'm programming!
Now, every time I watch cartoons, I listen to the music!.......2001-08-07
Carl Stalling. We all know who he is, but we don't know that we know. Who is he? The guy who did cartoon background music for Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for more than 20 years, that's who. Maybe you're thinking, "Oh, come on! Cartoon background music??! How good could something so trivial be?!" The answer to that question is.. VERY. Very entertaining. I just love Carl Stalling's great "scores". When you take away the context of it's being CARTOON music and just sit and listen to the damn thing, it's WONDERFUL music in and of itself! He goes from violins and a piano playing "agitato" simultaneously to a single oboe note and back again in five seconds. Not only that. He does that and, as random as it may sound, he mannages to segue it together beautifully. Now, every time I watch cartoons, the thing I pay most attention to is what aural miracles Mr. Stalling sneaked in. Maybe, after listening to this, you will too. If anything will change after you listen to this, it would be that you'll never think of cartoon music as trivial again........That's a GOOD thing.

For those who are fans of Galway or Mancini, (or even those who are not) this is a fun, upbeat CD that will bring back a lot of movie memories. This combination of the talents of this pair make for a great listening experience. I have had this work in my music library for a long time, and am grateful that it is still available since my ex and I both wanted custody of it!

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01
This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."

Thankfully--mercifully--Razor & Tie has issued a jaw-dropping second collection of fiery, ferocious forays. Bryant's head-spinning single-string leads mesh perfectly with West's limitless arsenal of pedal-steel tones, moans, whines, and wails. Remarkably, almost all of their 50 recordings are tossed-off head arrangements done for sheer enjoyment, but they remain superlative country-bop tracks that turn flash and flamboyance into valuable assets. Go no further than "China Boy," a six-minute reading of the jazz standard that runs right through producer Ken Nelson's stop signs, or the ballad "West of Samoa," which features West's bird imitations on pedal steel. Whether on floating Hawaiian-tinged ballads or supersonic steamers, the dynamic duo never ceases to amaze. --Marc Greilsamer

This should have been on Voyager's golden record.......2006-06-10
Without hyperbole, "Swingin' On The Strings" contains some of the greatest music ever recorded. Apart, they were just two studio musicians. Together, they created interstellar magic. Jimmy and Speedy - electric guitar and steel guitar - these guys shared the same musical consciousness on a cosmic level. Always cerebral, the compositions are stirring and the improvisation is spellbinding. This is perfect music. This has it all regardless of where you're coming from as a listener: country, jamband, jazz, instrumental enthusiast, etc. This disc should especially appeal to those coming from the Junior Brown camp. This is on an equal footing with its predecessor "Stratosphere Boogie" given the mind melting races, medium-tempo waltzes and relaxed ballads. "Swingin' On The Strings" should have been on Voyager's golden record, it is an otherwordly treasure.
country music instrumental at its' best.......2005-08-22
the true creative genius of this collaboration is first really being appreciated now, these two guys could play their hearts out and there is no way you won't enjoy hearing this CD. I don't know who's truly faster, Jimmy Byant or Joe Maphis, but who cares, and the pedal steel guitar by Speedy West is incredible!
Country-jazz from outer space. Smokin!!!!.......1999-10-06
This CD epitomizes creativity and chemistry between two fine musicians. I didn't live in 1951, but I have been collecting Western Swing, Old Country, Rockabilly, and Bluegrass records all my life. This CD is far and beyond the best example of what the human mind and spirit can do using music as a medium. You don't have to like swing, or country to like this CD. It doesn't matter if you like music at all, this CD forces you pay attention, tap your foot, bust a step, or just kick back and listen with awe. Jimmy and Speedy knew how to create. Creativity seems like a hard find in today's wasteland of fluff. Creativity is the backbone of this CD. The first song hits the ground running out of the gate, and when the last song is up, you'll start it all over again. Again, again, and again. There's not a dud on this disc!! Jamming with Jimmy portrays the lost art of hot fiddle playing. Lover will run you over, Railroading will have you dancing, and Pushing the Blues will have you fetching your black light out of the attic. Oh yeah, the rest are perfect too. These songs are perfect. PERFECT. Killer bassfiddle playing, jazzy piano fills, and yes: that smokin' guitar of Jimmy fused with that "whacked out" steel of Speedy. Too much fun! This is the CD that has made me believe that maybe good music has a chance to surface in our world today. One listen and you'll be smiling. There is no way around it. From a musician (like myself), all I can say is "woodshed here I come, I've truly been inspired!!!!"
Incredible country-jazz-bop-boogie!.......1999-05-15
Although this is volume 2 to Razor & Tie's first collection of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant, this CD is every bit as good (if not better)! I'm not generally a big fan of country music, but these guys absolutely floored me. Especially noteworthy is their rendition of "Lover" which even without the benefits of overdubbing studio trickery completely rips Les Paul's version to shreds.

Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant.......2007-06-18
EXCELLENT. It is a must have for all you West and Bryant fans. It is fun, relaxing, and shows their many areas of talents. It is highly recommed by me to all you fans of these guys.
Speedy West - No Contest.......2001-08-11
This is a great release for Speedy Fans. I enjoy the little introductions and commentary to the songs by Tennessee. They are live recordings, but the sound quality is fine. The songs that you might think you already have versions of are different recordings than those on the Speedy & Jimmy studio recordings.

Travel with your mind.......2006-12-02
The Seeds WERE the best psychedelic/garage band of the '60s, and their masterpiece "Future" proves it. Here, the band weaves the sitar, tabla, harpsicord, and even a tuba (!) into their music, and is all the better for it. The opening track with the spoken word intro is a bit hokey, but once past that, the stunning music commences. "Travel with your mind" is a beautiful piece, equalling anything done by groups of the era. The hit-that-got-away, "The Flower Lady and Her Assistant", is an absolutely mesmerising cut, and will haunt you for days afterwards. The melody stays in the brain, a sign of great music. The hit "A Thousand Shadows" was actually a B-side that got airplay; the band's record company was rather clueless at this point when it came to choosing singles, which undoubtedly led to the band's early demise, as did the decision to release the blues album, then credited to The Sky Saxon Blues Band. Something akin to commercial suicide, the band never recovered from this error. Had they been signed to a major label the project would have been nixed.
interesting material, bad compilation.......2001-12-07
The Seeds was not the greatest psychedelic/ garage-rock band. The main problem IMHB was their vocalist who's limited to Mick Jagger-imitation, which get on your nerves after three or four songs. Which is not to say those songs are bad, in fact if you just play the sitar and tabla dominated "Travel With Your Mind," when you're in a trippy mood, it's great, just don't play the whole album at once.
The First half of the album comes from the album "A Spoon full of Seedy Blues" and consists of trashy variation of the early Fleetwood Mac stuff. Some of their spicy musical arrangements of the psychedelic album "Future," which forms the second half on the disc, are truly mind altering.
Only those two albums, obviously combined on one dic for commercial purpose, don't fit together at all. The booklet is not too interesting either, appart from a couple of pictures. On the other hand, the remastering is well done, so in the end the good stuff is there just not very well presented.

Album Description
While the "Stroll On" tracks were cradled within the English folk tradition, Speedy Return explores the human condition using a more eclectic range of musical genres. With twelve original songs and an instrumental title track, Speedy Return, which was recorded after a solo tour of the USA, marks a clear change of direction without any loss of musical identity. Modal tunes mix with blues, rock, and Latin rhythms and yet the result remains distinctively English. Market Square's reissue of Speedy Return comes with its customary attention to detail - an informative 8-page booklet, including previously unpublished photographs and complete lyrics. 2006.
