5 out of 5 stars An eclectic mix that's sure to satisfy..........2007-05-10

I was introduced to MF DOOM in Art School and have enjoyed his wit and style for years now. This box set is the perfect companion to any collection of his work and is the only affordable way to own all the herbs. Super chill background music, 70's, 80's lounge and if you have seen the new film 'Grindhouse' you may recognise a few tracks from the 'Intermission' sections. A scholar, a gentleman, the one and only, MF DOOM.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not what I expected.......2007-01-10

This album is pretty good, as you would expect from any madlib, metal fingerz, ect but falls short on the length of the individual tracks. All of the beats are only about half to a third of their original length. But if you do not own any metal fingerz and like hip-hop beats I would highly suggest this cd set. Also you might want to checkout rjd2 or dj shadow.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah. This is exactly how Special Herbs should be presented........2006-05-20

The Special Herbs collections are essentially instrumental-only tunes of what you have heard from MF DOOM / VIKTOR VAUGHN before and then some extra stuff that did not make it to the final cut and of course tunes that MF DOOM had being working on but had no place outside of an instrumental offering. Hence the name, Special Herbs! I would suggest that you search out a full MF DOOM collection and then get these supplements unless you are looking for instrumental-only hip-hop. If you are, then you have come to the right place.

Special Herbs: The Box Set is Special Herbs vol. 0-9. You get all five double albums for the price of two albums. So it is much better value. MF DOOM has done it again. You can play this album from start to end for a full day in your home and never get bored with any of it. It is a masterwork.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Tracks that are Too Short.......2006-05-08

Overall the CD is okay. The beats are simple but good. Nothing out of the ordinary. simple baseline with layers. Good for background/lounge music or for freestyling wit yer homies. I just found that alot of the tracks were too short. Also you have the titles not matching up with the tracks on the CD. When I originally bought this CD I was looking for "Emblica Officinalis" after sampling the CD at the store I thought that it was not on this box set so I purchased both CD's, volume 0-9 and volume 7-8. Only after I got home and played the 0-9 did I realize that the joints don't match up. All-in-all the cd is dope, a little dark due to the organ samples but still dope. If you want a dope instrumental CD try Pete Rock. I have yet to be let down by the Soul Brother #1

4 out of 5 stars Songs Mix but so do the titles.......2006-04-21

More than 80 songs! That was the first reason why I bought this wicked collection of MF Doom tracks! Instrumentals all come from special herbs 0 - 9 which I think is unreal since it all fits into 2 cds and plus you got a bonus cd with 10 hidden tracks. The only major flaw in this album is that the songs dont go according to the titles displayed in the inner flap of the cd case. For example, it says the song is played on the first track but it is really played on the 8th track. Really confusing but other than that...4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Ear Candy.......2006-06-29

MF does it again with this third set of Special Herbs. If you like beats and instrumentals, you have to like Metal Fingers. This album was good, with, as always instrumentals from DOOM albums. There were also plenty of original beats. Two that I particularly liked were #3 White Willow Bark, and #6 Lavender buds. But then again I could go on and on. Some songs are soothing, others stimulating, but they all are sweet and will put you in a better mood for having heard them.

4 out of 5 stars Chill Out With These Special Herbs.......2005-10-28

MF Doom just can't go a couple of months without releasing an album of some sort. That's one of the main reasons I love him. His discography is so chalk full of originality and quality, that it's quite easy for a hip-hop head like myself to become completely enthralled with his career. These "Special Herbs" are a fine addition to his repertoire. Aside from his production on other albums (with rapping), this is a more in depth look at the man behind the mask. I recognized about 4 or 5 of the loops contained in this 13 track collection. It's a fun and chill ride of instrumentals that is sure to make you a believer in his moody production. The CD is also enhanced with some videos and pictures. The "My Favorite Ladies" music video was the highlight of the package for yours truly. Other videos include a live performance of "All Outta Ale", and a live "Special Blends DJ Set". Both of those live videos feature horrible sound quality and grainy video; leaving much to be desired. All and all, this is an interesting look at MF Doom's alternate agenda.

5 out of 5 stars Best Special Herbs.......2005-08-23

This Special Herbs album is one of the best yet. I've listen all the way thru to Special Herbs 9-10, and this one is still probably my favorite. It has the best assortment of tracks that aren't used on any of Doom' other albums (King Geedorah, MIC, etc.) and the tracks are smooth.

4 out of 5 stars Metal Fingers (MF Doom) Masterpiece.......2004-07-08

MF Doom has done it again as his production alter-ego Metal Fingers. This album rates at the top of my list with instrumental albums, along with Pete Rock's Petestrumentals and Jay Dee's Vintage. It has a extremely 70's feel throughout the whole album and leaves you with sort of a retro Herbie Hancock-esque (circa Headhunters) feel. You can clearly see on the song 'Dragon's Blood' Metal Fingers favors the comic book world with his sample from the 1960's Spiderman cartoon. 'Myrtle Leaf' is one of the best tracks on this album easily leaving your head bobbing and repeatedly pressing the Back button on your CD player. MF Doom is one of underground Hip-Hop's hardest working producers/MC's and geniusly exhibits his talent on Special Herbs Vol. 5&6.

5 out of 5 stars so sick, you'll be in bed fo' days.......2006-01-11

This is an instrumental album, if you havent figured that out with the four previous albums. This cd is so good, it never gets old. The beats are very differnet from one another, let alone different from what you'll ever hear. It is also great (actually, its superb) for freestyling. Coltsfoot leaf is the best track, but they are all special (herbs) in their own way. Get this in your CD player now!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Special Herbs yet!.......2005-11-08

It comes as no surprise that Metal Finger's latest addition to his Special Herbs collection is his best. MF Doom has evolved nicely over the years. His rapping and production has always been a step above it's predecessor. Here we have several untouched beats and instrumentals that Doom has backed on several of his proper albums, and some you may have never heard. Volume 9 kicks off with the pure beauty of "Vinca Rosea" and "Burdock Root", then dives into the familiar "Vervain" ("Beef Rap" from MM.. Food). "Bergamont" and "Untitled (Meditation)" are the standouts on volume 9, and "Peach Extract" is probably my favorite throughout. The last half is a little more funked up. This is ultimately the most unique ride Doom has taken us on, through his moody and relaxed production. His style is simply untouched and completely original. Underground hip-hop heads interested in hearing some quality hip-hop instrumentals should definitely check this release out.

5 out of 5 stars Why Volume "0"? Why not "10"?.......2005-09-26

Sweet DOOM beats. Amazon says the artist for this album is Metal Fingers, but the other Special Herbs volumes are credited to MF DOOM. It was for this reason that this album can't be seen on the list of MF DOOM's albums when you look up "MF DOOM". Tee.

The track "Untitled (Meditation)" is phat as hell (it's the instrumental version of "The Fine Print" from Take Me To Your Leader by King Geedorah).

5 out of 5 stars Groovy, fun album.......2006-04-20

I've gradually gotten into the work of London-born MF Doom. This album, "Madvillainy" and his work with DJ Danger Mouse, "Dangerdoom" have been my introductions to his vast discography. So far, I've found his work to be both creative and innovative.

In "Special Herbs, Vols. 7 & 8" he puts together a groovy blend of hip-hop beats and soul with a fun touch of chillout that remains timeless. It's an album you will probably be able to listen to without any problem 20 or 30 years from now.

A definite five stars production, this album left me wanting to go back to hear more of the amazing music works by this hip-hop artist.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-10-30

Possibly the second-best Special Herbs collection from Metal Fingers, after volumes 9 and 0.

Check out the track Buckeyes, it's excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Warning (THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF THE ALBUM).......2005-01-03

I recently purchased this cd from Amazon. The packaging and artwork are correct on the case and the actual cd. When I put the cd in it had 10 tracks and was actually a John Denver cd. A very odd anomaly hopefully, but just be aware that when these are pressed they are normally done in thousands at a time. There could be a bad batch of these that are filtering through.

4 out of 5 stars Special Herbs & Spices (beats & rhymes).......2006-07-14

Dope emcee dj/producer lp. Honestly I doubt Doom was with him while recording this psudo LP; because all of the beats are joints from other Doom projects or from Special Herbs. (Hence the title.) "Special Herbs & Spices" is mixing Doom's herbs with Grimm's "spices." Being the current state of Grimm and Doom's relationship, this is the closest product you're going to get for a long time.

Some of the tracks seem a little rushed with the rhymes... but I was told he freestyled a good portion of this. Other M.I.C. members make cameos along with Fat Man Scoop who psudo hosts the LP, which leads to the following questions.

Is it an album? A mix-tape? Don't know. It kind of falls inbetween the two as it's an entity of its own, but also a promotion for Grimm's triple LP "American Hunger."

If you're a HUGE Doom fan you might be dissapointed due to the metal faced villan not being on a single track and have hearing these beats before. But, if your a fan of Grimm and are looking for the closest thing to a colab LP outside of their split EP or Iblys... cop this joint.

1 out of 5 stars POOP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-12

THIS CD IS GARBAGE MF DOOM'S BEATS DOESN'T MATCH WITH MF GRIMM'S LYRICS THIS THE WORST MF DOOM CD IV'E EVER HEARD COSIDERING THAT ALL HIS CD'S I EVER HEARD ARE THE DOPEST SH?T EVER. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR DONT COP THIS CRAP

5 out of 5 stars A manic monday and a plate of gritty ol' meatloaf............2005-08-17

Actually, i am a big fan of "pheonix/lyrical landscapes" type of stuff.....M.F Grimm on the other hand is a tad simple and raw........But this album is a MUST HAVE when you are driving down the east coast concrete jungle.. we call our own... Yes,,, Doom's beats is what makes the album what it is. Grimm's previous work doesn't stand higher whatsover, and never will without the aid of Metal Face. It's just a fact, Percy's grim voice and Dumil's instrumentals go together perfectly and get the job done beautifully. I feel Grimm without Doom is like cake without the frosting..something missing..If you never heard him before.. Grimm is sorta like the underground version of Kool G Rap, but more slower yet effective with his punch like the Thing....I am not even going to get much into detail,,,,pretty much,,, check it out for yourself...The kid got voice and some good concepts...and Doom's beats backed em up to give em a high score! Nuff Said....

5 out of 5 stars Why Is Grimm So Slept On?.......2005-05-01

I'll keep it short and sweet. Ill beats by Doom. If you know anything about Grimm, you know he's been through some serious ish. The emotion is definitely present in his delivery and his flow is lethal. Grimm is the illest emcee the world has never heard of. Cop this and support Day By Day Entertainment and all of the unheard emcees and underrated producer/dj's (MF Doom, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Jay-Dee, Madlib, Marly Marl, Jazzy Jeff)that keep the underground alive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Duo.......2005-04-05

Grimm and Doom have been working together for years. This nice little package has Grimm rhyming over Doom's excellent production. MF Grimm's take on the older beats is new and refreshing. Pick this mix up and you won't be let down.

It's difficult to review a release such as Special Herbs 1 & 2. Whereas most Hip Hop instrumental albums are made to be just that, an instrumental album, the Special Herbs series gives the listener vocal free production from DOOM's back catalogue of Hip Hop Classics.

This would put most people off just a little bit, if it wasn't for the fact that the material DOOM has put out over the years on his solo albums sounds so fresh that to hear the music on it's own is still a worthwhile experience, plus there are a couple of previously unheard tracks on each volume.

I highly recommend this first installment & wouldn't hesitate in recommending all volumes in this series. Or alternatively you could track down the condensed 3CD Box Set.

5 out of 5 stars Get The Box Set instead.......2006-05-20

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre beats cd from MF Doom.......2006-02-14

This, The 1st 2 volumes to the special herbs series is just a collection of beats that sound like they're outdated and much of these beats i could never see any rapper rapping to. The only beats that were worthwhile on this cd are ''Shallots'' [The best beat by far on this cd] and ''Saffron''. If you're a dj or an mc looking for good beats to use, Don't get this cd. Judging from how dissapointed i was in this cd, I wonder if the other 4 special herbs cds are any better. I do not reccomend this cd, But if this is your thing, Go head and get it. Peace out, Be blessed.

4 out of 5 stars For those who seek more Doom.......2005-11-05

Ah yes, Doom's special recipes. The standard of quality on the entire collection is relatively high. This one happens to be my current favorite because he does mix in several beats that you've already heard (assuming you're an MF Doom fan). I would usually want to hear all different beats, but this is a fantastic compilation of some of his best instrumentals. The mix starts off with the relentless scratching of "Saffron" (Operation Doomsday title cut), then moves on to the jazz inflicted "Arrow Root". "Coriander" is the beat from Doom's cameo on the Monster Island Czars album. "Shallots" boasts an effective dirty guitar sample nicely. "Monosodium Glutamate" ("Rhymes Like Dimes" beat from Operation Doomsday), "All Spice", and "Lovage" are smooth and sexy joints. The tweaked out super villain voices and cuts on "Red #40" remains a strong cut as well. Overall, there's plenty of tasty beats to hold a Doom fanatic over until he drops his next LP.

4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2005-10-30

Metal Fingers a.k.a. MF DOOM presents a collection of beats from both himself and numerous other DJs, including DJ Pocket, DJ Spinna, DJ Subroc (R.I.P.) and DJ Cucumber Slice.

The problem with some of the beats is that some are repetitive, as they were mostly meant to be rapped over. Also, some beats suddenly stop abruptly -- this is a common technique in MF DOOM's albums, where the beat suddenly stops to emphasize something that he says. It sounds great when he's rapping over the beat, but when the beat is left alone it sounds annoying.

My favourite track is Arrow Root, it's the beat to "Next Levels" from King Geedorah's "Take Me To Your Leader" album.
