Considering that most Golden Era rap talents birthed by Dr. Dre have ridden off into the sunset--or are simply much less active and relevant in 2004--it's somewhat surprising that Snoop keeps churning out the hits like it was 1993. Make no mistake, Snoop's raps are still very much gangsta, as the title of the disc implies and as "Bang Out" clearly outlines. They're just a bit more adult-contemporary gangsta now. Despite the heavy pro-pimp overtones, the Doggfather's smoothed-out timbre and flow mask the harshness of his regressive views. The exceptional production throughout is highlighted by the Neptunes' contributions, from the catchy, minimalist "Drop It Like It's Hot" all the way to the '80s retro-funk jam "Let's Get Blown." Steady vocal contributions from funk stalwart Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and 50 Cent, and nasty beats supplied by everyone from the Alchemist to Hi-Tek put this one over the top. --Dalton Higgins

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord
Album Description
Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.
Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."
Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

Amy Amy Amy!!!.......2007-07-25
When did pop become a four-letter word? According to all of the great movies about music, pop songs are the solution to most of life's problems, not to mention salvation from a melancholy and romanceless existence. Particularly in recent years, pop artists have been working hard to restore the name of this much-maligned art form, from Justin Timberlake with Justified to Christina Aguilera with Back To Basics. But it seems that Brits have been on some secret and by large successful crusade in the past 12 months or so: Corinne Bailey Rae, and then Lily Allen, brought sexy (not to mention smart) back every bit as strongly as their American counterparts. Now, Amy Winehouse continues this developing trend with Back To Black, a brilliant and beautiful homage to the r&b and soul of yesteryear that reconfirms pop's prominence not only as a commercial but genuine artistic genre.
Truth be told, I think I prefer Winehouse's UK debut Frank even better than this album, if only because it feels more hip with its collection of dexterously cribbed hip-hop beats and effortlessly catchy melodies; if you can find it, it's the stopgap you've been waiting for between those Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill follow-ups that can't arrive too soon. But Back to Black offers a specificity and yet timelessness that its precursor doesn't share; ultimately, the two albums complement one another without trampling on either's individual accomplishment.
Winehouse, like so many great British soul singers, looks back past the Beyonces and even Janet Jacksons for influences, instead choosing the likes of Motown and girl groups like the Shangri-Las as her source of inspiration. The first single, "Rehab," pays subtle tribute to those predecessors both thematically and musically: while Winehouse tells her would-be support group "there's nothing you can't teach me/ that I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway," the Dap-Kings' rhythm section carves out a funky groove straight out of the mid-1960s, sounding immediate and dated all at the same time. Producer Mark Ronson (Lily Allen, Ghostface Killah) ladles vintage soul onto six of the disc's eleven tracks, lending Winehouse's syrupy voice the kind of universal catchiness that spawns a thousand future samples - the first of which, appropriately enough, already appeared on Ghostface's More Fish album in November of last year.
At the same time, Winehouse enjoys solo songwriting credit on almost all of the tracks - except those featuring Ronson's amazing arrangements or an actual sample - suggesting that she isn't a mere interpreter or frontwoman for some coterie of studio svengalis. Her lyrics languish in brilliant, beautiful and often painful details, observing intimacy and awkwardness and exuberance - sometimes all at once: on "You Know I'm No Good," for example, she sings "you say 'when we're married', 'cause you're not bitter," then subtly acknowledges her own carpet-burn confession of infidelity. Hers are not always optimistic love songs, but they're always honest, and she's more direct here than Beyonce could be in a dozen "Ring The Alarm"-style confessionals.
Among the best tracks are the funky, aforementioned "You Know I'm No Good," the track reworked for Ghostface; "Just Friends," about a pair of illicit lovers who want to be buddies - if only their attraction will let them loose; "Back to Black," a mammoth '60s soul epic that sounds like a collaboration between Phil Spector and Ennio Morricone; "Love Is A Losing Game," a Dusty Springfield-style summer song that is beautiful right up until the moment it breaks your heart; and "He Can Only Hold Her," which may rank as one of the most honest songs ever written about a woman who doesn't - or more accurately, can't - return her would-be man's love.
The album closes with a tune that might serve as the female counterpoint to D'Angelo's classic "Brown Sugar" - is she talking about weed, or sex, or love that she can't get enough of? Naturally, the answer is up to the listener; but suffice it to say that "Addicted" is indeed the appropriate way to end Back To Black. Because even if you thought pop was all but robbed of its flavor and stretched to its flabbiest, most played-out incarnation possible, Winehouse's music suggests there's still a lot left to chew on.
amazing!.......2007-07-25
WOW! If you have not yet heard Amy Winehouse, you're really missing out. A mix of cocktails in the 60's and the grittiness of today, she lures you in with soulful sounds, then shocks you with some amazing bravada.
FANTASTICO!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-24
This CD was given to me as a birthday gift this past weekend. Well Amy Winehouse, you have totally won my heart! You are not only gifted & talented as a young woman, you ROCK sister! Please give us more of you! This CD is for everyone! No matter your age. So get your copy NOW! You won't be disappointed. Really.
Best Album/Artist of the Year! .......2007-07-24
I had to buy this album as soon as I heard "Rehab" just last month. I can't stop listening to this album. Every song is it's own stand-out. Buy this record if you love soul music and "smart" lyrics. I still can't believe Ms. Winehouse is only 23; you would think she was 43 when reading her lyrics or straight out of the the 1960's.
Astonishing talent.......2007-07-24
I couldn't agree more with Amin. Months ago, I saw her on late night TV and thought at the time: "Oh...this is interesting..." Unlike 100's of forgetable performers on TV, she stuck out like...well, like a sore thumb. The "Rehab" song was instantly memorable. But that's just the appetizer. I heard her sing "Back to Black" on Youtube at the SXSW in Austin with just her astonishing voice and an acoustic guitar and I could not believe what I was hearing. Who else sounds like that? Lauryn Hill perhaps...but Amy is Dinah Washington without the godawfull strings, Sara Vaughn without the sappy arrangements. The big question to me is not whether she'll be a big star. She already is. But will she live long enough to make more great music? OTOH, she's already "opening", if you will, as a kind of flawed diamond, certainly not squeaky clean- so she's not going to shock anybody if she falls face down in the gutter...but still, I'm hoping to hear more amazing stuff from this gifted young woman for years to come.

Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Coolest of all are two tracks at cross purposes-- "Chelsea Rodgers" fuses funk with disco until it's so far off the hook it's in a heap on the floor, and "All the Midnights in the World" paints a picture of artistic maturity through piano and lyrics that lean hard on positivity. There's an elegance to it that Prince fans, no strangers to pop music that's truly sublime, won't fail to appreciate. --Tammy La Gorce

Only One Prince On The Planet.......2007-07-25
The latest effort of Prince is a reminder of what many people have been drawn to for so many years and that is the sheer and pure talent of this artist. Though this release is only ten tracks, it is a pleasant mix of old and new school funk/rock/soul. In the same tradition of 04's "Musicology" and last years "3121," This album is solid from start to finish. The standout tracks include the slow and mellow funk of "Future Baby Mama", The retro rocker "Lion Of Judah", and the jazzy smooth "Somewhere Here On Earth." It's also nice to see Wendy & Lisa back in the picture as they perform on the project along with Sheila E.
This cd is a must for all who enjoy real music.
Prince,Are You On Planet Earth?.......2007-07-25
I must start out with a purely non musical observation on this album.Prince has been known among many things for his odd moves in the past but one involving this album takes the cake. Not on the back, middle or the CD itself will you find song titles on the CD. You will have to get them from an internet sight like this. This may have some meaning but is confusing (and maybe troubling) to many prince fans and that is the sole reason why I deduct a star;to me it's enough of a problem to justify the deduction.Anyway as for the music 'Planet Earth' is not the least bit like 3121. The best thing I can say is that this music more closely resembles Prince's more rock oriented material from the mid 80's and mid 90's (Lisa,Wendy and Sheila E. returing to the mix after many years) and is far more subdued overall then the previous album. The lead off single on this album "Guitar" and "The One U Wanna See" both have one thing in common-they are both modern guitar heavy pop-rockers with catchy hooks and certainly radio and single worthy on an equal level. "Somewhere Here On Earth" is one of the best ballads Prince has ever written, with a beautiful jazz style and a longing vocal from Prince."Future Baby Mama" and "Mr.Goodnight",although the latter features Prince rapping, something he hasn't done in a long time both feature more or less what I call "smooth groove" style soul. The brief "All The Midnights In The World" has a feeling similar to 60's pop and the same story goes for the closer "Resolution",with it's anti war message.Prince doesn't really emphasize funk on this album but there is one very strong exception in "Chelsea Rodgers",a lively funk jam that could've come off of For You except for the Chicago style horns blaring in and out.The title track is a very strange way to begin the album,a progressive funk-rock styled tune, heavy on the drama and the environmental message. People who are fans of Prince's funky and soulful side might not find exactly what they're looking for on 'Planet Earth';most of the music here is either more pop-rocky or sudtle. But no matter what it is a wonderful thing to have Prince continuing to regularly recording and releasing great and often challanging music again after his many years as a recording artist!
Music for Nothing.......2007-07-25
Why should I buy it if he gives it away free? I want it free too!
What Happened ?.......2007-07-25
Why? Why ? Why ?
After last years 3121 why would he go this direction ? This to me sounds like a pure retread cd. Nothing New.. nothing innovative.. nothing fresh ! At least 3121 was electronic, Funky and Fresh to some degree. It really seemed like he was on his way to a strong return. All these songs sound old and dated and not in a good way. This album will not bring any new fans or young people on board. And the thing that kills me the most is that Prince Has inspired so many other artist over the last two decades. The thing I can't understand is that these inpired artist seem to have captured his style better than him. Prince can't even seem to do Prince anymore with out retreading old material and not even the best of him. What happened to Jams like Letitgo? Space, Anna Stesia, Get it Up , She's always in my Hair? And don't let me get started on all the albums from 1999 up until Sign of the Times? What happened to the reverb the electronic experimentation with live instruments ? This was a man that made his own sounds and drum patterns and til this day everyone uses them. But listening to this album no one would believe this. This album sounds like everyone else but Prince it even has some Barry Manilow in it. The Title track was definitely less than what I expected for such a interesting title. I was expecting something innovated and futuristic like Gold Experience or Come. If you are going to make a mellow title track.. at least stick in territory like "The Ballad of Dorthy Parker" or "IF i was your Girlfriend. Give the people something to bop to or ride too ! "Planet Earth" sounds like a demo track off the Vault. It reminds me of Two other songs "Empty Room or "There is Lonely". Guitar is a middle of the road rock sounding song , defintley isn't going to set the world on fire (And It hasnt). "Somewhere here on Earth" decent song but sounds like a 60's song I have heard a million times. "The one you wanna See" decent song but dated sounds like a retread of "Never Take the Place of Ur Man" Or Man in ur life from 2004's Musicology but not as good . Considering it has Lisa and Wendy's name attached to it (Shock's me). I have heard better when they were together. It is one of the better songs on the album easily. "Future Baby Mama" Great song, modern production easily the better song on the album. But it also is familiar, anyone remember "I Hate U "? "Mr Goodnight" ? Lets put it this way R-kelly could do better and I don't like his music ! "All the midnights in the world" ? No comment "Chelsea Rodgers"? Is the only thing on the album with any funk to it or kick ! But it still fells to be as great as tracks like 1+1+1=3, Black Sweat, Love, Pimp coma Circumstance and we won't even compare it to his earlier work no compitition. The song is funky but still very dated in my opinion too dated actually. And the rest of the album is just totally forgettable.
I would have never seen this coming 15 or even 20 years ago. Prince is one of those artist where the bar was held too high. Anyone else, we could have seen this coming but not "The Artist". He was just to polific for this. This was the man that defined music and fused styles together and created his own sound. Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado , Timberland, Gwen Stefani, The Neptunes, TLC, Alicia Keys , IamX, Tricky, Basement Jaxx, Kelis, Van Hunt, Lenny Kravitz, Nika Costa, Ani Difranco, Pink, Spacek and Andre 3000. These are people that adore him and have been truley inspired by his music. And if you listen to there material you can see that they have taken the best from him. It makes me sad that the pupils have superceeded its teacher. But it looks like at age 50 prince is either truley uninpired or "The River has just Run Dry". Madonna, has been the only artist out of that group that has been able to stay fresh and innovative. And no one would have ever foreseen this 20 years ago. Does she have the skill and the ability Prince does ? Well no ! But she keeps her ear to the street and she wants to be relevant not a Wayne Newton ! Prince has no Quality control as the other reviewer stated from London. 3121 , was a return in my opinion it had consistant songs and originality . "The Rainbow Children" was a great experimental album.
Also what kills me the most about it this album is so poorly executed compared to some of his internet albums. I don't know why he didn't go and grab some of that material ? "One Nite Alone" is a far more superior effort than this and it is a piano album. "Slaughterhouse and The Chocolate Invasion" are definitley more interesting even better produced albums. "When I Lay my hands on U", "Supercute", "Silicon" are some serious jams. You may want to go and seek these jems out because this is a waste really. And if you want to hear a great album that Prince didn't make but sounds like where he should be now ? Pick up "Basement Jaxx - Rooty " Or Iam X both cd's "KIss+Swallow and "The alternative". Also if you can download a copy of SP4 by the Sneaker Pimps. That is what I am talking about also pick up Kelis's "Wanderland". I am already waiting for the next album and that is pretty sad ! I really hope he is reading this because I own everything from For You up until now. I also have all of the Paisley Park artist and the internet lps. So I am more than just a fan I even have both Madhouse Cds and Jill Jones. So trust me I know this mans music and I am not a old man just a lover of great music. So I am giving him one star because I know he can do better than this. And the other star is just for the artwork on the album cover LOL !

Pretty good album. Anyone who likes this should check out a compilation series on iTunes called "Euro Club Hits" ... (there's a vol. 1, vol. 2, vol. 3, etc. etc.)...... So much of current club music in the USA is based in the stuff coming out of Europe, and yet nobody seems to know of it and the radio doesn't play it here! So I'm taking it as my personal mission to introduce everyone to it as best I can ...... There's a cool new development in summer singles: they no longer need to be sunny. In fact, the wetter the better. "Umbrella," the first single off Rihanna's ragingly good third album, may be her strongest ditty yet, and that's saying something considering her run of past summer chartbusters. More stylish than "S.O.S." (from A Girl Like Me) and more interesting than "Pon de Replay" (from Music of the Sun), "Umbrella" barrels forward with big, brawny drums and a hot but haunted-sounding vocal. From there, the upbeat numbers chug forth like chilled pina colada mix into a blender: "Breakin' Dishes" trades skillfully on a recent vogue for man-directed venom, and "Shut Up and Drive" borrows "S.O.S."-style from the '80s New Order song "Blue Monday." Both are irresistible. So, too, are a couple of late tracks. "Rehab" and "Lemme Get That," both produced by Timbaland, prove that being an island girl is no barrier to holding one's own amid a sizzling stew of urban beats. In fact, it's a boon--one that'll register with pop music fans instantly. -Tammy La Gorce

New Look + New Sound = Alright Music.......2007-07-20
Rihanna definitely made the effort to step up to a more mature sound on this album. The new sound is not half bad either. However, alot of the tracks sound rushed and like no effort was put into them. The beats are solid and there are some memorable lyrics as well. Overall, Id say this cd is worth lending an ear to. Her other 2 are better, though. Hot Tracks: Umbrella, Rehab, Good Girl Gone Bad
This is why it's HOT!!.......2007-07-16
This CD is fresh and energeitic all the way through. It's truly made for those who want to dance. R&B artist take note, Rihanna has tapped a flavor of music that's rocking the spot.
GO RIHANNA!!!.......2007-07-10
I THINK THIS IS ONE OF HER BEST ALBUMS. SHE REALLY SHOWS HER VERSITILITY ON THIS ONE. I CAN LISTEN TO ALMOST THE ENTIRE ALBUM AND WHEN YOU CAN DO THAT YOU KNOW ITS WORTH GETTING
Okay, for what it is.......2007-07-09
I listened to this at work and heard it quite a few times over the course of around 5 days. It annoyed some of my workmates and others didn't mind it - I quite enjoyed some of the music on this album, which is undoubtedly well produced. I imagine that it would sound quite good played up loud at a party or in a club.
Some of the song lyrics struck me as being a little silly, but that didn't bother me too much.
I don't think I'd listen to this album very often, but if I had a lot of guests over for a party, I'd consider playing it if people looked like they may want to dance.

If you thought Black Eyed Pea-sized bites of Fergie might be all you could handle--that a full plate of Fergie is possibly too much for any discerning musical palate--The Dutchess might change your mind. For here the lumpen lady throws caution to the wind and threads her pop needle with an ambitious ribbon of yet-to-be-conquered genres: reggae and ska on "Mary Jane Shoes," with Rita Marley; vintage soul on "Here I Come"; '80s hip-hop on "Fergalicious"; and sophisticated R&B on the John Legend-assisted "Finally." It's a tremendous and unpredictable expenditure of effort that mostly pays off--echoes of more talented vocalists like Pink, Beyoncé, and Christina Aguilera poke through in places. But while unbridled messing about can pay handsome artistic dividends (here, the guitar-propelled rock-like track "Big Girls Don't Cry" coughs them up), ultimately it's when Fergie's at her Peas-iest that she's most lovable; cases in point are the raunchily irresistible "London Bridge," which earned every week of its chart-topping success, and the will.i.am-assisted "Clumsy," a girl-group-styled bump-a-thon that showcases Fergie's coolest and most distinctive asset--her personality--to winning effect. --Tammy La Gorce

good.......2007-07-24
It is okay but i was hoping for more dance tunes and less slow jams
What a surprise..........2007-07-23
Okay, so I admit to being a bit naive when it comes to buying music. I saw the explicit lyrics warning but couldn't figure out why it was there, I'd heard the CD and it seemed okay to me. I looked through all the reviews, no one said there was a "clean" version. Well, now I have a CD that I can't really listen to with kids around and will probably have to list it on eBay to get rid of it.
When there are 2 versions of a CD (explicit vs. clean) it should be listed somewhere that there are 2. I like the CD. The music is upbeat and Fergie has a terrific voice but unless I'm by myself there is no way I can play this with a carfull of kids.
Guilty Pleasure.......2007-07-17
Fergie could have been just some great eye candy and no substance artist, but she is far from getting that label.
If you are the person who turns your nose up at tracks like Fergalicious and London Bridge then you don't deserve this outstanding album. This album is solid from top to bottom, and beginning to end.
First, Fergie really can sing. She moves from rap to ballards with a smooth ease that makes we want to see what she does next. Second, Ms. Stacy Ferguson doesn't lip sync when on TV shows, and the confidence she has in her voice is displayed in the album. Finally, in my opinion this is the MUST HAVE pop record for 2006/2007.
NOT A SOLO ARTIST.......2007-07-15
SHE BY FAR IS TIED WITH THE WORST ALBUM OF 2006 (TIED WITH K-FED) ALL OF HER SONGS ARE SONGS BY OTHER PEOPLE THAT THE OVERRATED PRODUCER WILLIAM DID.
Diverse Hot and Fresh.......2007-07-12
Better than I could have expected. First artist who has such a range of songs on this CD that makes it impossible to pigeon hole her. One of the best CD's I've bought ever. She changes it up on every track. 90% of this CD could qualify as hit songs.

As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

Album Description
From the liner notes, by John Lewis:
When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.
Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.
The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.
It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.
Rep. John Lewis

We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05
I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.
Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28
This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!
quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27
This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.
Yes and no.......2007-06-27
A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.
Passion and soul.......2007-06-26
Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.
Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27
I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.
Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15
This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. On that track, Timberlake's appeal is his sweet but newly thuggish-sounding voice--here's a good kid gone bad, and he's determined to convince us of it not only by tossing a few well-timed mother****ers our way but also with such lyrics as "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave." The rest of FutureSex will feel familiar to anyone who picked up 2002's brilliantly funk-flecked Justified: "Love Stoned/I Think She Knows Me," shifts from Michael Jackson-esque paranoid trilling to pulsating guitar rock; "Chop Me Up," a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia and Timbaland, gives up the grit rap-style but still manages to recall both Prince and Stevie Wonder; "My Love," with T.I., mines classic Timberlake territory with meltaway lyrics like "I can see us holding hands walking on the beach/Our clothes in the sand"; and the straight-up but groovy lament "Losing My Way" asks, searchingly, what may be the silliest question a squeal-inducing pop star has ever posed: "Can anybody out there feel me?" Rest assured, JT: we feel every past-, present-, and future-sexy verse. --Tammy La Gorce

good stuff from europe!.......2007-07-24
Pretty good album. Anyone who likes this should check out a compilation series on iTunes called "Euro Club Hits" ... (there's a vol. 1, vol. 2, vol. 3, etc. etc.)...... So much of current club music in the USA is based in the stuff coming out of Europe, and yet nobody seems to know of it and the radio doesn't play it here! So I'm taking it as my personal mission to introduce everyone to it as best I can ...... "Euro Club Hits" -- it's only on the digital services for some reason -- iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Emusic, etc. etc.
It's okay!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD mainly for the Sexyback song and thought the other songs on the CD would have a similar beat/feel to them. I was unpleasantly surprised to find that I really only like 3 songs on the entire CD. Many of them do not sound at all like Sexyback, some of them do not even sound like Justin Timberlake, and some sound like rap-type music. It's okay - but if you are expecting a similar sound/feel for the songs, it is not there.
So hot!.......2007-07-22
Yes, JT is hot, but so is his music! Almost every single track in this album can be released as a single. To think that I actually hated "SexyBack" when I first heard it.
JUSTIN IS HOT AND HIS MUSIC HOTTER!!!.......2007-07-06
I must say that I was very surprised that the whole CD was unbelievable... not just tracks Sexy Back and What Goes Around that is now being played in most radio stations. Every song was amazing, with great lyrics and jammin' beats. It just underlines and reiterates the incredible artistic tales of this dude. I will say that this is my first CD from him as I have bought only single tracks in the past - and definitely will not be the last. Thanks Justin, for a totally kickin' and rockin' album. LOOOOOOOVE it. Definitely blasting this on the way to Vegas!
Best one yet!.......2007-07-05
This is Justin's best CD. His sound is blended well with Timbaland and other artists. Good funky, r & b, and hip hop sounds.

If you didn't get to know Chrisette Michele by way of Jay-Z (she was the one singing sparkling hooks on "Lost Ones") or Nas (she channeled Billie Holiday on "Can't Forget About You"), stop wasting valuable seconds. Though the hype on this pure-voiced, raunch-resistant songstress has her resuscitating a classic jazz sound that rarely infiltrates R&B--comparisons to Lady Day, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald are mounting--she's more her generation's answer to Erykah Badu: any notes she wraps her lips around come out fresh-sounding, and she adds to the effect with a built-in elegance that's irresistible to R&B and non-R&B fans alike. Hip-hoppers get a custom dose of Michele's magic on "Be O.K.," featuring the flabbergastingly prolific yet still likable Will.i.am, jazz sentimentalists will instantly succumb to "Like a Dream," and anybody with ears on his or her head will warm to the slinky slow jam that is "If I Have My Way." Michele's is a rare talent; count on this outstanding debut propelling her to stratospheric heights. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
I Am, her soulful debut album, is an artistic exploration that fuses 24-year old Chrisette Michele's diverse musical interests into a wonderland. "I realize that I'm new to the music world, but I've been preparing for this moment for long time," says the Long Island native. Even before signing a recording contract, Michele had performed on concert bills with more established artists like Kem, India.Arie, Angie Stone, and Lionel Richie. "India saw me singing at the Village Underground in New York City. She came backstage that first night and graciously offered me a gig as her opening act," says Michele. Working hard in the studio writing songs and recording demos, Michele finished an album's worth of material before even trying to get signed. "I've been creating songs since I was 12, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand out from the many other performers trying to get a deal." Though already a fan of gospel and classical, it wasn't until Michele was 17 that she also developed a passion for jazz. "When I was still in high school a teacher introduced me to jazz singer Astrud Gilberto, and afterwards my life was all about jazz," she remembers. With the release of I Am, Chrisette Michele will soon be sharing those musical dreams with the rest of the world.

i read about chrisette michele and her cd in a magazine, heard it, and bought it the same day! she has an incredible voice-very soulful! great cd-you won't be disappointed!
Wonderful, subtle, gracious and enduring........2007-07-23
Finally. A young female singer who isn't begging for a man, bragging on her sexuality and going on and on about the material things she has. There is a maturity in the lyrics and the phrasing of these songs that wows me. Each song actually tells a story or sets a mood. Not to knock other singers, but her positivity (in a time where many sisters aren't really selling a lot of positive) is refreshing. In particular, I would love to see the song "Good Girl" played to young women over and over again.
But it's the voice, the delivery, the complexity that sells this CD to me. Truth be told, this child could probably sing "Little Miss Muffett" and still make a classic. Her voice is at times silk, at others, velvet, and without all of that over singing and caterwauling that some folks seem to think makes them a strong singer.
I enjoy this Cd, it's on heavy rotation in my car and home.
Phenomenal Phenomenal!.......2007-07-21
I was so entranced by her voice. The girl has real talent. It is so refreshing to here new talent. She reminds me of an old soul because of the jazz influences. Some of my favorites are.."Like a Dream"..."Is this the way love feel".."In this for You".."Golden".
I Am - actually 4.5 stars.......2007-07-21
When I heard that Chrisette Michele was releasing an entire album, I was a decided skeptical having only heard her sing hooks for Jay-Z & Nas. I wasn't sure about her vocal skills until I saw her perform on Letterman THEN saw her video for IF I HAVE MY WAY! These two performances sealed the deal for me and I immediately bought this album and am so happy that I did. I agree with a lot of posters that really talented r&b vocalists come few & far between but Chrisette is definitely a new star on the horizon - a unique vocalist who co-wrote every single track of this wonderful debut cd.
My favorite tracks are: IF I HAVE MY WAY - her phrasing is outstanding on this track and is the one that most reminds me of Jill Scott & Minnie Ripperton; LIKE A DREAM; BEST OF ME - beautifully melodic track; YOUR JOY - beautiful tribute song from a loving daughter to her father; LET'S ROCK - I love this upbeat track with the unexpected but genius Run DMC sample interwoven; LOVE IS YOU; GOLDEN & IS THIS THE WAY LOVE FEELS - love the almost operatic/rock build up in this song, it's a very interesting arrangement!
Honorable mentions go to: GOOD GIRL - love the 'ol school/nu school sound of this track & BE OKAY - although I did not like the rap interlude, the georgeous musical production shines on this track.
I truly hope that this classy & talented young lady is able to sustain a long career and that positive word-of-mouth will help get the word out about what a great debut disc this is.
Quientessential Soul Album of the year.......2007-07-19
This album is everything a good album should be. Creative, well written, good production, etc. This is a MUST BUY. This beautiful lady's voice is ridiculously smooth and strong.

R&B with tempo: Justin Timberlake resurrected it, and it's proving way more influential than that other lost commodity--sexy--he claimed to be bringing back in 2006 on FutureSex/LoveSounds. Timberlake is to Robin Thicke what 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys were to a band like O-Town, in fact: he pretty much made it all possible. But even though it took one blue-eyed soulster with a hot look and an achy falsetto to bang down the door for another, Thicke presents a convincing case here that he had the goods to get us grooving all along: Evolution is a classy disc that tiptoes up to its listeners, first with an elegant duet with Faith Evans ("Got 2 Be Down"), next with a slick lament that wouldn't sound out of place on a Boyz II Men disc ("Complicated"), and then with a sweet plea that commands a finger-snap ("Would That Make U Love Me"). By the time we reach the long, sweeping lullaby that is the final track, "Angels," we've also had a taste of Thicke's swaggering side ("I Need Love," "Cocaine"), his hip-hop loving side ("All Night Long" and "Shooter," both with Lil Wayne), and the side that fantasizes about 1950s Latin ballrooms ("Everything I Can't Have," a hot tamale of a number that commands a visual if ever there was one: it's impossible to hear this song without imagining a raven-haired woman with a red rose between her teeth). Despite the range of moods on display, they're all in service to Thicke's inner R&B smoothie, and they all brush up against the ear with something like affection. Hard as it will be for listeners of a certain age to get past knowing that Thicke is the son of Alan Thicke, the actor who did his part to cheese up 1980s TV with the sitcom Growing Pains, they're going to have to: with his fan base swelling by the second, the evolution of Robin Thicke is going to be a deservedly loud one. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
NOTE: This deluxe edition features a ringtone of "Lost Without U," an autographed poster, and cell-phone wallpaper.
The Evolution of Robin Thicke is the second solo album from the critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning songwriter and producer of records for such artists as Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera. The album is a timeless work of art. With a voice of purity, passion and soulfulness, Robin brings to life the stories and emotions of the last two years of his life.
The album is filled with incandescent magic. It is an album that tells the tales of love, loss, temptation, redemption and finding hope when all the odds are against you. "My greatest desire with this album was to write songs that were completely honest and sing them with the emotion I was feeling when I wrote them, so that whoever listens to my music is brought as close to my experiences and life as possible."
Reflective, redemptive, passionate and etched with a soulfulness that is undeniable, The Evolution of Robin Thicke is an imaginative and heart-felt album that you cannot help but be moved by, bob your head to and smile throughout.

Well I just received this CD in the mail from Amazon and bought it because I saw Robin Thicke on Good Morning America where he sang "Lost Without You" which I love. The rest of the CD in most cases is excellent - with the exception of one or two songs on it I think it deserves to do very well. I also like the fact that he doesn't only sing falsetto, and he sings in very different styles which really shows his versatility.
GREAT MUSIC FROM A GREAT ARTIST.......2007-07-20
I have been a Robin Thicke fan since I saw the once long haired singer belting out "When I Get You Alone". Another early song to fall in love with is "Stupid Things". I have to admit that when I heard "Shooter" with Lil Wayne, I was not even thinking about getting this CD. I HATE THAT SONG!! But once I heard "Can U Believe", I ordered it, and have been listening to the entire CD everyday now. You won't be dissapointed!! I hope the rest of world learns to love him like I have been doing for a while now.
Soothing love music.......2007-07-15
I absolutely loved one or two of the songs but I found the album as a whole a bit bland. I did not really see the evolution but I do not know his earlier music.
Robin Thicke's Evolution CD - Only Liked Half.......2007-07-12
Robin Thicke is talented vocally and lyrically, unlike other people who sell CDs but cannot sing or people who write songs with incredibly boring, repetitive lyrics (i.e., Justin Timberlake). I like Robin's voice, but didn't like about half of this CD. Also, I thought the track about the "school girl" was in poor taste, given the focus on pedophiles and inappropriate advances by teachers toward students that have hit the news in the last five years. Would recommend CD to others with "conditions." Even so, I do like Robin Thicke and hope his fronting on tour for Beyonce goes well.
I'm Surprised........2007-07-11
I didn't expect much from this CD. I purchased it on the strength of the beautiful' Lost Without u'. I've normally found that these days, this would be the stand out song on the CD, with all the rest failing to meet my expectations. Well on this CD, I have been pleasantly surprised. Things start off with: 'Got 2 be Down, with Faith Evans. This has a Marvin Gaye vein going through it, and positive love lyrics to boot. 'Complicated' follows, which has a piano foundation to it. My, it's so good to hear a melodic song with a structure, with real (sounding) instruments to boot.' Would that make u love me' follows, with a lovely sung 'Marvinish' hook. Infectious. 'Lost without U', to me, is the perfect example of a great love song that is not TOO sugary. Really Uplifting ( with a great video) Ask Myself, Everything I Can't Have, Teach U A Lesson, I Need Love, Can U Believe, are tunes that I can let play without skipping, and show cases his beautiful falsetto voice. The worst moments are the songs featuring Lil' Wayne, and Pharrell, which sound horrendous, especially 'Wanna Love you Girl' with Pharrell. For me the minimalistic, less is more approach to the majority of the songs on here, help to highlight Mr. Thicke's voice, and have resulted in a great overall product. All-in all a good CD which is one of the best I have purchased this year.

When the most exciting producer in pop music himself puts out a CD, the thrill is in the discovery: The world may have already suspected that Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and a small army of other singers owed 75% of their fame to the stockpile of skittering beats Timbaland built and then graciously set them upon, but here's a chance to prove it. Or it might have been in less welcoming hands. Shock Value is a far-reaching and ambitious disc; a masterpiece, even, in its own way. But it's not at all self-centered. If there's a point being put across here, it's that Timbaland came by your vote as behind-the-scenes musical man of the hour honestly: pair him with Fall Out Boy or the Strokes, and he will not only provide tracks that surprise you by maintaining their rock 'n' roll integrity, he will also convince you that shimmer's role in rock music has, to now, been tragically misguided and miniscule. Re-team him with Timberlake and Furtado (for the near-flawless track "Give It to Me") and he will again trade vocal bites, but they will still be nibbly, not voracious. In a CD full of experiments and puzzles (why is Elton John just piano-playing, not singing? And how did the L.A. band One Republic end up on this disc?) a single truth emerges: Timbaland's taste is impeccable, but his judgment is even better. Shock Value, by virtue of its swirly beats and mesmerizing rhythms, will bring him a smidge closer to the spotlight. But because it's a disc of collaborations, he'll retain the shadowy-genius reputation that precedes him, and that he so richly deserves. --Tammy La Gorce

Tasty beats however.......2007-07-23
This is the first hip-hop album that I had ever bought and I'm satisfied with it. I thought this was Timbaland's solo album, but in truth only the first track "Oh Timbaland" can be described as a solo effort. As for the whole album you can expect to listen to the unique beats that is his signature.
As genius as he is in creating beats, he is no lyricist or at least a keen observer of lyrics. Take the first four lines into the song "Miscommunication" which incidentally was not written by him as Timbaland could have suggested better rhymes instead of the ones there.
My favorite among his collaborators in this album is Keri Hilson. Her smooth singing voice provided counterbalance to Timbaland's throaty effort, as evidenced in the track "The Way I Are". Unfortunately I don't feel any chemistry between Timbaland and Hilson as the lyrics would have suggested. Timbaland, as charismatic he can be, just don't have the persona for flirting with a 'co-star'.
Another collaborator worth mentioning is Amar, the British/Indian singer on the track "Bombay". Here I'm particularly fond of Timbaland's accentuation of the upbeats, slight syncopation of the downbeats, added with the otherworldly qualities of Amar's Indian singing style.
The rest of the tracks I'm not really fond of. "2 Man Show" with Elton John for example, feels a bit dry and uninspiring. The tracks with fellow hip-hop collaborators I can't really decide as this is, after all, my first hip-hop album.
One problem.......2007-07-21
Timbaland has a talent for making hits, and there are so many potential singles on this thing it's not even funny. But there are a bunch of filler songs in the middle of the album that are disappointing.
There are a lot of good, fun, danceable songs on this CD, it's just that the bad songs really weigh down the good ones. Tracks 6-10 could've been left out quite easily. Since the cd is 17 tracks long, I'm constantly skipping over those songs to get to the good ones. It's just inconvenient.
Other than that, this is pretty good. Like I said before, it's just annoying to have to skip over a bunch of songs.
Favorites: The Way I Are, Bombay, Throw It On Me, Time, One & Only, Apologize
Shocked at shock value.......2007-07-13
Now, I'm not going to say I didn't like the album. I did like it. But, I just do not feel Timbaland let loose enough.
I think he is a wild stallion, but it just felt like something was pulling back on the reins, something was MISSING.
I can't put my finger on it, but felt this album was...Too controlled to offer an SHOCK to me.
I wanted a cut loose RAW BEAT album.
I was satisfied, but being satisfied means the content was just satisfactory. I want to be satiated. I hope another album is to follow this, I really do. I'm addicted to the beats, Timbaland is EXCELLENT for those. I can't get enough. BUT, please next time don't just shock me.
I want shock waves, electricty to the veins. Maybe next time.
Can't stop Tim.......2007-07-09
This album rocks. I love that Timberland teamed up with all different types of artists. Rock this!
two decent cuts.......2007-06-30
You already know the two good cuts - theyre the singles and fully worth downloading. the rest of the album is disappointing.
in the mid 90s timbaland sounded fresh - had a new style - and was known for his creative beats. you would never know that from this new cd. theres nothing remarkable about the beats - the melodies dominate. do we buy timbaland albums for the melodies? i dont think so.
timbaland isnt trying to impress anyone - and when artists arent hungry and have no one to impress they slack off and make lame albums like this.
