While it's not quite the "Jigga with an acoustic guitar" setup we'd hoped for, Unplugged reveals once and for all that Shawn Carter is among the few MCs who don't need a whole bunch of electronic wizardry to sound good. Jay-Z's timing is flawless, his hits are showcased, and the audience is obviously having a great time. But aside from some witty banter with folks in the front row, Jay doesn't take this opportunity to loosen up any more than usual. In other words, don't expect much deviation from the standard wording. This Unplugged performance is a "no freestyle zone," represented by the truncated rendition of "Big Pimpin'." Mary J. Blige's no-holds-barred assist on "Can't Knock the Hustle" more than makes up for this, though, demonstrating why she's been hip-hop's favorite muse for 10 years running. The Roots provide ample live band support, although Ahmir Thompson's drumming sounds rather flat and a total violin overkill does a great disservice to "Takeover," Jay's dis-out to Queensbridge. And, yes, there is a hidden studio track. According to Damon Dash, it's entitled "I Hear the People Talking." --Rebecca Levine

Must have!.......2007-01-14
If you're a Jay-Z fan or a new fan looking to sample some of his older songs, then you can't go wrong with this CD. I have listened to it over and over and it's always as good as the first time. A lot of friends have purchased it after hearing me play it. Definitely worth every cent.
classic.......2006-01-06
this album was really good. it was my first taste of the roots. they added a fresh flavor to a lot of jay's old songs. simply put, classic

One Of The Best Unplugged Albums Yet.......2005-09-01
I love this MTV Unplugged album because it makes you feel like you were right in the audience. Jay-Z performed a few of his classics and brought a few friends along for the ride: The Roots band, Jaguar Wright, Pharrell, and Mary J. Blige. What more could you ask for? Its a great live album and I would recommend it for any hip-hop fan. BKLYNBABYLON signing off...

Jay Z is a Vastly Overrated Rapper.also Newsflash to Jay Z:R.kelly is putting a Music Hurting on you, Son. Jay Z is Rufus from the "Trapped in the Closet" Movie. the Roots are Vastly Overrated as a Hip-Hop Band. always gotta be carrying the Horse carriage, because there own Music has no Wheels.wack Overrated Acts deserve One another.Jagguar Wright vocally sounds like a Gremlin with that Sad generic Mary J.Bliege tired Voice.very forgettable Album&Corny.
Great live effort.......2002-03-06
I don't consider myself a hardcore hip-hop fan. Over the past 15 years, I've purchased a total of six rap/hip-hop CDs and cassette tapes. I like some of the beats, but the language and generally negative vibes turn me off. Jay-Z's album fills a pretty big void in my CD collection. The Roots band is completely off the chain. The sound quality leaves much to be desired, but the beats are tight; and the lack of gratuitous profanity makes this CD a pleasure to listen to. On "Takeover" Jay gets a little aggressive in his language, but it doesn't detract from the song's flow.
All in all, I recommend this CD for those people who enjoy hip hop but don't particularly like the language.
