Introduction for any instrument........2006-03-16

The book explains the scales to be used with different chords. And gives some patterns to be played over these scales. The first play-along track have chord progressions to go along with those pattern, so you can play along using those pattern. The pattern starts very simple to more complex ones. Of course you may also improvise freely over the same backing tracks, using notes from the given scales. The book further explains ideas about hwo to build a nice solo, and introduces the concept of tension and release.

While all well done, I have only rated it 3 stars. I play the guitar, and found that an introduction to jazz specificly written for the guitar was much to prefer, e.g. by providing ideas on fingering of different scales. I guess that this would be similar for most instruments. Morover the main part of the book has to be written three times for instruments of different tuing.

The book proceeds directly to a modal approach to improvising. Non of the backing track would allow imporivsations within one major scale. I guess that the author want to avoid the reader to get stuck in the diatonic approach (Using the same scale if all chords are derived from one common scale, as the chord progression for many songs is.) Still, this makes the initial learning curve steeper.

On the other hand, after studying other book, I found lots of useful ideas when I reconsidered this one.

wonderful kid's music.......2001-12-26

You won't hear any synthetic intruments on this cd. This is not fake kid's music. The music is authentic, much of it has a hillbilly-type sound, and is lots of fun. I like every single song on this cd myself, and it's my kids favorite, and gets them running and dancing around the living room every time they put it on. We played the cd at a party once and all the kids had fun dancing to it. I came to this site today to see if Nagler had any new music out, and I had to show my support for this GREAT cd while I was here :). You won't be disappointed with it.

Eric Nagler has the heart of a child.......2000-02-09

I have known Eric since i was in grade school. I had the grand opportunity of being frinds with his son. Growing up we all listened to him live and in person as well as on his records... I have seen Eric grow from a fledgling Canadian entertainer to an accomplished TV star. It is still good to break out the old records and the new CD's to this day and smile a little... you know Eric was smiling when he played those songs. Bravo Eric, from children young and old.

The CD is exceptional, and any real J5 fan should pick themselves up a copy. The song list above is wrong though, Concrete & Clay is NOT an instrumental, it is something more then a remix of concrete school yard, but something less then an entirely new song - It is, regardless, super fly hip-hop at it's best. There are four songs on the single, and the last song IS an instrumental. Enjoy this joint, they don't come any better. And get the album "Quality Control"

Keeps me drooling for the full cd.........1999-10-28

At first i was kind of disapointed with the song improvise.. its beat reminded me of some pop rap songs unlike its previously more laidback and less harsh beats.. i still enjoyed it none the less but it in my mind wasnt worth of 5 stars.. as i began to listen to it i began to like the wordplay used in it which makes J5 unique to other hip hop groups. i like the lesson theme in improvise, like they're teaching you something.. then you get a remix type deal of concrete schoolyard

if my review seemed a bit hard to follow, buy the cd and you'll see what im talking about

An intense interpretation from Thierry Escaich in Maurice Duruflé, with the Cambridge Voices. We are facing a monumental tribute to Maurice Duruflé's work, illustrated by few improvisations from Escaich through the Motets. This is in short a resume of this CD.

The program is divided into three parts from which the well known suite op.5, is followed by a suite of alternate executions between the voices and organ in the Motets.

With colourful execution, especially in the Toccata, the organist Thierry Escaich gives to Duruflé a new dimension by showing an intense sense of tempo up to a slightly scary mood point.

The Cambridge Voices were a must for Escaich because of the tradition of cooperation and admiration between Duruflé's wife and the choir. These voices are pure beauty and the crystal clear sound makes Duruflé's music close to a mystic climax.

This CD is surely one of the best of Duruflé's music interpretation.

Marvellous.......2005-04-15

No composer could be given a better tribute than has been done with this disk. I bought the disk only for the Durufle Op. 8 Suite. I soon discovered that the rest of the disk is worthy of praise. It's pricy but a very entertaining disk work every penny.

Zarboutan is a group of Creole musicians from the island of Reunion. Their music is an exciting mix of chanting and drumming.
