An Orff Masterpiece!.......2007-07-04
After first hearing Carmina Burana (with Eugene Ormandy and the Philidelphia Orchestra), I thought, what else? Can anything top this? Well, I don't think that the selections on this Cd quite equal Carmina Burana, but they are definately worthy of attention.
These highly neglected works are true Orff treasures. With the success of Carmina Burana, Orff was asked to write another such work. So, he composed Catulli Carmina. It is scored for 4 pianos, full choir, and a huge battery of percussion instruments. However, despite the absence of wind and string instruments, it is still very colorful. This is the most operattic of all the works in the Trionfi (Carmina Burana, Catulli Carmina, and Trionfo di Afrodite). The lyrics to the first and last movement were written by Orff, wheras the contained parts were by Catullus himself. The story tells of Catullus and his love for the prostitute, Lesbia (a woman who appears in much of his poetry). The excitement and drama of this work make it very enjoyable.
Trionfo di Afrodite is much better then Catulli Carmina, seeing as it has a full orchestra to accompany it. It tells of anciet marriage and love traditions, the youthful energy of love, and, of course, the goddess of love herself, HYMEN!!!! Ah, yes, Orff was great at the pagan stuff. Especially in the Invocation movement, in which the youths all praise Hymen, chanting in rythmic, bitonal passages. I love the last movement, in which Afrodite appears herself, and they all scream at the end!
If you enjoyed Carmina Burana, you must buy this Cd. The performance by Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra is excellent. They have recorded many of Orff's works, and Franz Welser-Most is a reputable conductor, and I was pleased with the sound quality of this disc. Buy it! Move along with the barbaric beauty and enjoy the music of one of the 20th century's greatest composers.
An excellent work.......2007-02-21
I always wanted to know what and how was these both Carl Orff's works: "Catulli Carmina" and "Trionfo di Afrodite". They are surprising works. And the record is excellent, too.
Catulli Carmina and Trionfo Di Afrodite is substandard to Carmina Burana .......2006-12-07
The greatest appeal of Orff's Carmina Burana is O Fortuna. It is among the most powerful and deep compositions of classical music. There is a significant percentage of the fans of Carmina Burana who loose interest in the rest of the music. They should not buy parts two and three of the Trionfi. Nothing resembles O Fortuna in Catulli Carmina nor Trionfo Di Afrodite. For the rest of us who like the sublimeness of the other scores in Carmina Burana, Catulli Carmina and Trionfo Di Afrodite has little to offer. None of the scores have the depth, power nor sweetness of any of the Carmina Burana scores. It offers only sour notes, operatic dialog and no memorable melodies
A Great Performance of the Little Heard Carl Orff.......2002-07-12
It may come as a surprise, if not disappointment, to many that Carl Orff wrote his Cartulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite (Triumph of Aphrodite) as the second and third parts of a triptych, after the boisterous fun of Carmina Burana. By comparison, the latter works have never had the popularity of Carmina Burana. However, if as one listens to Catulli Carmina and the Trionfo over time an appreciation of Orff's different orchestration and use of voices can be appreciated. This is actually more typical of Carl Orff than Carmina Burana.
Catulli Carmina is a play within a play; it consists of a prologue, three short acts and an epilogue. At the start, young couples profess their undying love only to be ridiculed by a group of old men who know better. They exhort the young people to watch a play on the experiences of Catullus and Lesbia, to know what love is all about. The play commences with Catullus' famous Odi et amor poem and follows his affair with Lesbia, whom he rejects at the end of the play. All of this is to no avail, as the young couples merely profess their undying love for each other to the chagrin of the old men. So, the views of romantic love and sexual attraction, and their views between young and old, remain unchanged. The orchestration is quite sparse: four pianos and percussion.
The Trionfo di Afrodite is another dramatic performance of love from the perspective of marriage rites from ancient Greece. The texts set to music include Catullus' wedding songs, some of the fragments of Sappho and a chorus from Hippolytus by Euripides. There is a distinct touch of ritual in this piece where the Chorus Leader (bass Alfred Reiter) declaims his lines with the rest of the chorus replying to him. The climax comes with the appearance of Aphrodite herself. Orff used a large orchestra with three pianos but the voices are of highest importance.
This recording by Franz Welser-Most is among the best and is superbly recorded. For someone wanting to give further investigation to the music of Carl Orff, look no further.
Terrific recording of Carl Orff's forgotten masterpieces.......1999-01-02
Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Aphrodite are the second and third cantatas making up Orff's triptych, which he gave the collective title Trionfi. Carmina Burana has all but eclipsed both of these works but they are both very deserving of a wider audience.
Catuli Carmina is a play with a play with a group of young men and women professing their undying love for each other being watched by world-wise old men. The old men laugh at the presumption of "undying love" and recommend the young people take in the experince of Catullus (the 1st century B.C.E. Roman poet)and his unhappy love affair with Lesbia. They all watch a play drawm from the poems of Catullus are sung by the poet himself and his love. But are they convinced?
The Trionfo di Aphrodite examines marriage through the eyes of the ancients. Orff set poems of Sappho, Catullus and a portion of Euripides' Hippolytus to music. The work proceeds from a wedding procession and ceremony to an ecstatic appearance of Aphrodite herself. The leader of the chorus is prominent in a speaking part that sounds like the invocation of ancient mysteries. The beauty of the music comes in the marriage of words and the colors of the orchestra.
Repeated hearings of these works are very rewarding and the subtlties of Orff's orchestration need to be heard more than once to take in the colors he lends to the words. For me, these works are a celebration of ancient literature and civilization. Carl Orff brings us into his idea of the ancient world and he succeeds brilliantly.

Jochum's Orff is about as good as it gets, full of the vibrant energy that suffuses the works in this triptych, but he also makes the most of the music's lyric passages. Orff, who ought to know, called Jochum's versions of his work "definitive." Though longtime favorite Carmina Burana is an oft-recorded staple, Jochum's 1952 first version still more than holds its own even with outstanding stereo competition. This set also offers the only compilation of all three works, and if you like Carmina Burana, you'll probably like them, too. They share their more popular sibling's power and rhythmic drive and the excitement offered by endless rounds of prominent percussion, pounding ostinatos, and catchy tunes. Catulli Carmina is based on poems of Catullus. Trionfo, based on poems by Catullus, Sappho, and Euripides, is, like Stravinsky's Les Noces, a wedding cantata. The sound, especially in the first two works, is amazingly fresh; only the lack of stereo and traces of not very troublesome distortion hint at the recording's age. But the excellent soloists come up clear and the big moments have plenty of impact. DG doesn't supply the often bawdy texts, but does provide a scene-by-scene synopsis. It's good to have these classic performances back. --Dan Davis

A driven performance........2007-06-10
This is one of the very few recordings that are or were ever available of Carl Orff's complete Trionfi, a trilogy of dramatic cantatas written between 1937 and 1953, of which the first, Carmina Burana, is the most famous.
The inevitable desire to compare this performance of Carmina Burana to the more well-known one Jochum recorded in 1968 (also for DG) reveals the essential character of this entire recording: the solo singers here are not nearly as smooth or varied in vocal color as on the '68, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony is a much grittier-sounding ensemble than the Orchestra of the German Opera, Berlin. (Language aficionados will also enjoy comparing the different pronunciations of the vulgate Latin and Middle High German lyrics between the two.) On the other hand, this earlier performance has more edge and drive. There is, in fact, a rawness and a rhythmic vitality to the performances of all three works here that, to my ear, serve the music brilliantly. If you want slick and clean, this is probably not the recording to get. But if you want a performance with sonic bite and gripping interpretation, this one delivers.
NOTE: All three works are recorded in mono, albeit with rather high fidelity.
a wonderful music..........2006-07-04
...with a competent conductor, admirable interpreters and an unique orchestra. I recommend this item strongly. Extraordinary.
ribald, raw, and wonderful !.......2004-12-26
Rousing and wild, this is a fabulous recording of Orff's "Carmina Burana". It has a lot of lively fire to it, and has not been tamed in the sudden soft/loud changes, making it one of your neighbor's worst nightmares, second only to Wagner operas. "Carmina Burana" is a favorite of Madison Avenue ad-meisters, and is used on TV to sell everything from movie promos to toilet bowls, so even if you have not heard this piece, there are portions (especially the "O Fortuna") that will sound familiar. This piece is written in "dog-Latin and low-life German", based on 13th century songs found in a Bavarian monastery, and is cetainly one of the most unique pieces of 20th century music.
"Catulli Carmina" is based on the erotic poems of Catullus (84-54 BC), and "Trionfo di Apfrodite" on poems by Catullus, Sappho, and Euripides. Both pieces echo "Carmina Burana" somewhat, except they are a little more civilized, but nonetheless interesting.
Eugen Jochum's interpretations are masterful, with much precision and vigor, and the soloists and chorus excellent. The recordings are from the mid 1950s and are in mono, and considering the age the sound is adequate.
The booklet insert contains a track list, and liner notes on Jochum and the compositions.
Disc One: "Carmina Burana" (1937), soloists: Elfride Trotschel, soprano, Paul Kuen, tenor, Hans Braun, baritone.
Total playing time is 55'39.
Disc Two: "Catulli Carmina" (1943), soloists: Annelies Kupper, soprano, Richard Holm, tenor.
"Trionfo di Afrodite" (1953), soloists: Annelies Kupper, soprano, Elisabeth Lindermeier, soprano, Elizabeth Wiese-Lange, soprano, Richard Holm, tenor, Ratko Delorko, tenor, Kurt Bohme, bass.
Total playing time is 76'38.

The best version of Carmina Burana I've ever heard.......2006-08-02
We own several versions of Orff's Carmina Burana, including this one, Robert Shaw conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and André Previn conducting the LSO. This recording features a great orchestra well-balanced with a great chorus and soloists for the finest recording I've yet heard. Since there are so many versions that have been recorded, I would never have guessed that Kegel and the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus would trump the rest if not for a friend's excellent recommendation.
The 20th centuries greatest collection.......2000-06-13
Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is an extremely wonderful piece. A must for classical collectos the O Fortuna is recognizable to just about anyone and the level at which the choir performs is simply outstanding

Great album.......2006-06-14
Great album. It has a good flow it. Nice variety and nothing seems out of place as Imani Coppola goes through a pop, funk, r&b, rock genre blend ("Dirty Girl" sounds kind of bluesy, even). It feels personal. Introspective yet witty and relatable. It took me multiple listenings to fully appreciate it at first, because all I had been exposed to musically of Imani was Chupacabra. On Imani's official website she makes available albums that were made in between Chupacabra and Afrodite. To me those link the two together, sound-wise and with some of the subject matter, for those who think this album is too different from her earliest check those out. Imani Coppola's albums since Chupacabra have showed far more range. She keeps growing musically and trying things.
Sex, Liberty, Rock and Funk.......2005-10-02
On this wonderful effort Imani has composed, produced and preformed almost all instruments on each track. Afrodite is more accesible than her first release, but her artistic values remain "steel". The sound is rock, funk, soul, and dance. She's defying genres once again, and it sound so good. Lyrically she tackles sexuality, liberty and just plain fun.

Amazing, Incredible, Work Of Art MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-03
Well, reading the eight reviews, some of those people had a head on their shoulders, some didn't. Please disreguard some of the negativity that's written. If you love and appreciate music, great songs, and meaningful lyrics, this album should be yours. This album is truly amazing. I've been an Imani Coppola fan since the first record. On this album, she really was able to spread her wings and fly. The songs are incredible, and the instrumentation and production is to die for. My favorites are "Hope For The Future", which I know one day will be a monster hit, "These Days", and "Afrodite." Of coarse this album is different from the debut, but you can tell this was Imani's vision. She actually did all the production, songwriting, and played all the instruments herself. The mixing is fierce, and I guess I could go on and on. Her voice shines, and the songs will instantly charm you. Slamming album.
Eh. Not that special anymore........2005-04-19
Whatever it was that made Chupacabra "different and special" -- the lyrics, Imani's clear and strong voice, the rhythm -- is gone. Don't buy it expecting to hear Imani. If you are into over-hashed voices that are barely recognizable due to the electronics, then this is for you.
But don't expect "special". Don't expect "different". Before, her differentness and specialness were in a category of her own, maybe closer to "They Might Be Giants" than to the usual Sheryls of the world. Now, Imani is as "different and special" as any other alternative singer today.
Sorry. I still listen to Chupacabra intently, and don't see myself giving this CD a sixth thought. But I still give it 3 stars, because as a CD, it is ok. Just doesn't blow my mind is all. Where did the fun go???
wow!!.......2005-03-06
i've never heard of her until i watched her in action at the brooklyn museum on march 5th and my friends and i were immediately hooked. her lyrics are catchy and comical, familiar and shocking and the melodies just shake you awake. she had the challenge of performing in a huge room filled with adults AND little people who haven't even learned to tie their shoes yet but she still managed to pull everyone in though she had to improvise on some of the content for the virgin ears (good job too!). her band was cool and she had such a great spirit when she stopped to sign autographs of her cd which were definitely selling that night. she gives a lot of energy on her album and in person so she's definitely 1 to check out on the concert venue.

Anne Sofie Von Otter is a born singer of songs, and this collection of Swedish miniatures dating from about 1910 to the 1950s are easy to relate to both in their Romanticism and the direct, unaffected manner in which the fine mezzo puts each across. In Ture Rangström's "En gammal dansrytm" (Old Dance), she uncharacteristically slides into the song in a sultry fashion; it makes you sit up and listen. She rarely brings any darkness into her tone. In keeping with the CD's title, we get soft, Northern light in both her tone and pianist Bengt Forsberg's--and by so avoiding any false sense of drama, each song's subject, particularly the ones about nature are, well, natural. But when something else is called for, as in Bo Linde's "Är jag intill döden trött" ("I Am Tired to Death"), von Otter knows how to emphasize the text amost conversationally. This lovely collection of pastels occasionally threatens to evaporate, but close attention reveal true delights. The mezzo is in fine voice, with no "opera diva" behavior to get in the way of the songs' charms. A specialized collection, perhaps, but one which reaps fine rewards. --Robert Levine

Thorough, Complete, and High Quality.......1998-09-30
Rarely does Orff's complete Trionfi accompany the better known Carmina Burana (the first work of the triptych), and the opportunity to accquire the complete series should not be missed. The CD booklet is likewise complete, with full song texts and over 6 pages of discussion of Orff's career; 3 pages are devoted to explanation of the Trionfi (all text appears in Czech, English, German, and French - the theme is "thorough"). The recordings date from 1961-69, but the AAD transfer is clean, sharp, and dynamic - Prague was a former Soviet CD publishing center, and this is probably the cause for such a decent recording (although not quite full digital sound should be expected). The Czech artists provide a convincing and enjoyable studio performance - these are not live concert recordings. If I had one bad thing to say about this issue, it would be that the second work, Catulli Carmina, begins on the first CD, and continues on the second. Without a multi CD changer it is not possible to get an uniterrupted experience. Still, I would highly rate this CD set for Orff fans.

A fascinating performance of a rarely performed work.......2001-02-14
So far as I know, this is the only complete recording of Orff's "Triptych" of secular cantatas for chorus and orchestra--Carmina Burana, Catulli Carmina, and Trionfi di Afrodite. The last is a rather mysterious work because it's hardly ever performed in concert or recorded. Listening to this recording, you can understand why: it seems sparer and even more inaccessible than "Catulli", which it otherwise resembles to a considerable degree. That was my first and immediate reaction when I listened to the "Afrodite" tracks on this double CD. As the piece progressed however, parts of it began to grow on me, as did the realization that I would have to come back to explore this orphaned work in greater depth.
Smetacek conducting the Prague and Czech philharmonics and the Czech Philharmonic Chorus does an admirable job. His "Carmina Burana" is rich without being overblown. Throughout, the sound is crisp and clean.
I had to wait nearly two weeks while Amazon tracked this recording down for me. It seems that it's hard to come by. If you're interested in Orff's work and haven't heard "Trionfi" I think you're missing a lot. Get a copy of this recording while it's still available.

Customer Reviews:
Orff: Trionfi.......2001-04-17
