True Story re: this album.......2007-07-11
The townhouse next door to mine was for sale. The realtor brought a very unsavory-looking couple to look at it and I thought, "Oh, I hope THEY don't move in!" Suddenly, I had a brainstorm! I opened all the windows to my house, inserted Zero Tolerance in the CD player- and cranked it up!!!
Needless to say, the prospective buyers left very shortly thereafter and were never seen again.
I love Pat Metheny and I would buy any of his albums without a listen prior to the release of this monstrosity.
There should be a 0 star rating..........2007-06-23
I can't imagine how this got as many stars as it did. It's not texturally, rhythmically, melodically, or harmonically beautiful in any possible way. Listening to it is physically painful - and don't try to tell me that has its own kind of beauty! Someone with no musical sense at all, who had never before seen a guitar, could make better "music" than this. I can't believe it got recorded! I can only think that the gifted Mr. Metheny is laughing hysterically because "Zero Tolerance for Silence" is being taken seriously by anyone.
I have a theory about this one.......2007-03-22
I think it was an experiment: "Can I make an album of outside guitar playing ... using my FEET?
Creative license to tickle the soul -- the map is not the territory.......2006-08-12
It's not surprising that there are critics who can't, or at least don't, seem to understand the aesthetic of these pieces (especially someone who claims to have 3 music degrees and might need a 4th). I believe they contain an enormously welcome degree of beauty and freedom -- texturally, rhythmically, melodically, harmonically.
It appears that worship of the conventional is a trap that mauls the possibilities of what exists outside of our limited experiences, and this album is not conventional by any means. Yet there is a convention in this recording which is personal to Pat Metheny, whether it was an intended output, coalesced into abject musical anger in the heat of disgust, or evolved into a perverted joke's punchline.
One doesn't justifiably say that Derek Bailey is full of crap and a musical preschooler, or Eugene Chadbourne is sloppy and doesn't know anything about how to get a decent tone out of an axe. Roscoe Mitchell - Have you ever heard his tirades of notes, the several minutes of all-out circularly breathed otherworldly soprano sax bliss? He's Mick Barr of the reeds. There are others, as well, who are scrutinized under the microscope of convention, yet are masters whose advanced souls holographically express in everything they play; their dynamics, hidden polyrhythms and melodic patterns, musical "accidents."
Pat Metheny, likewise, holds a mastery which derives its own personality, and in that regard, exudes something multidimensional and way deeper than the surface noise that some people can't get beyond. He has, as does anyone, a license to change mind about what convention is, in any given moment, and flow with it, even if it flows backwards.
I think it would be great if Pat Metheny would more frequently offer a recording of equally daring creative expression, to demonstrate his evolution of aesthetic.
It's all there; the perfect beauty in the malformation, the extreme bliss of a frenetic interpretive dance. This album goes where no other goes.
IMHO, those that say it goes in the trash don't seem to get the point.
Wait... What?.......2006-08-04
Wow. When I first started listening to this album, I knew the huge amounts of controversy behind it. It is just Pat, playing over himself in huge amounts of disonance and noise. Part One to me just seemed like the same noise over and over again for almost twenty minutes, and I didn't get much listen out of that. Parts Two-Five however seem much more interesting to me. I am an avid Metheny fan, and although I have no degree in music, I understand it very well. I have played jazz trumpet for eight years and listen to the rest of his works as a means of escape from standard, strait-ahead jazz. His manipulation of rhythmic meters and styles that set him apart from the rest of the jazz world are just facinating to me, along with his outstanding ability to pump out an amazingly musical improvised solo.
This work however, is unlike anything I've ever heard. I'm not sure if you would call it jazz or rock or anything for that matter. It's at such an extreme to the musical spectrum that it is in its own way... facinating. It's definitely not something that I would listen to every day, but the disonance and occasional out of tune notes along with the melodies and countermelodies of raw, noise improv are still cool at times.
I read that this was Pat's way of saying "F-you" to his record label... whos contract forced him to come out with a new album of sorts that he did not want to do. Despite its craziness, I still believe that Pat Metheny is a genius, and even at his rawest and angriest form, still pumps out a very interesting and unique album.
I don't recommend this to avid Metheny listeners, but to those who are bent on completing their collection and finding what this album is all about... I say go for it.

R.I.P. Chuck Schuldiner. Thanks for your music and vision........2005-09-20
This double CD of loose ends by Chuck Schuliner is a miss mash of early and late Death & Control Denied demos and live stuff. I personally really enjoyed this release and appreciate the fact they DID NOT polish the original demos. The rawness lets me picture how they originally sounded like in the 80's to record execs contemplating signing Death. A major con is the liner notes written by I don't know who but he spouts negativity over the struggle to release this material after Chuck's passing. I am not an insider but however brutal Death's music was and became, Chuck's overall message evolved into and about positive energy and hope. I don't see how Chuck can be happy with the negative liner notes which left me cold and on top of that the grammar and spelling is horrible!!! How can that happen? Shame on the liner note writer but props to the natural sounding collection of demos for me to own and cherish.
.......2005-09-04
What can you do when you have the choice to purchase a 2-disc compilation comprised of unreleased Control Denied material but you know that such material was released against the wishes of the Schuldiner family? It could be a hard decision to make, especially when you consider the legacy of this Metal legend and the well-documented tribulations he went through before his passing. Anyhow, four rehearsals, vocal-less tracks of unreleased Control Denied material begin this compilation, and it pretty much showcases Chuck's vision of progressive power metal with the Death touch. Next, we have Death's 1985 "Infernal Death" demo, 1986's "Mutilation" demo, "Death by Metal" demo and "Reign in terror" demos-all raw and unpolished in their own way but very enjoyable. A young Chuck spews forth demonic verses of perversity and malignancy. Finally, we have a live show recorded during the "Spiritual Healing" tour, and it is the essential Death show. All in all, this is a nice package that should please fans of Chuck, especially his early years but at the same time it makes you wonder whether the Control Denied should have just been kept behind doors until the Schuldiner family felt it was the `right' time for its proper release. Not a nice way to glorify Chuck's pioneering; one can only hope there wasn't any ulterior motives behind this release.

Zero Tolerance for this Album.......2004-11-04
This was a utter disappointment. The only reason to buy this album is to complete a collection, not for listening. I respect 'artistic creativity' but this is too much. I'm almost certain I could have created many of the same sounds found on this album, and I have never played guitar in my life.

Customer Reviews:
12 years too late.......2007-06-29
If the Hit Squad had dropped an album when they should have, all indications show it would have been one of the all time greats. We all know how that went. It seems as if this is a "Parish Smith and Friends" album, listed as the Hit Squad to intice those fans who never got the crew album they always wanted. The only track featuring Redman and Erick Sermon features obviously dated verses. You can blatantly tell by how raw he sounds, Redman's verse could not have been recorded after 1992. As with the rest of the album and the "new hit squad" members...they aren't bad, but they are not what you are expecting when you buy and album with the name "Hit Squad" on it. None of the MC's stand out as horrible, but that's the problem with most of them...they don't stand out at all. Workman like verses that are forgotten when they end, but serve thier purpose. Fat Joe sounds uninspired, and Prodigy drops his usual generic verse of the same lazy trash he's been wasting mic time with ever since HNIC. PMD brings his game for the most part, as the coach/star player of the time, and makes this a decent effort. You won't hate this album, but you won't love it either. You will enjoy it when it's on, but won't reach for it often.
