Hip-hop continues to grow up, expanding beyond the 'hood and outside of its American birthplace. Like France's IAM or Britain's Dizzee Rascal, this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes "bling rap" ("Emcee Murdah") and who harks back to rap's golden era on cuts like "B-Boy Stance," a James Brown breakbeat-fuelled number. However, like Andre 3000 and his "Hey Ya" pop affectations, K-os's strongest material might be the tunes that are the least hip-hop-inspired. Between the foot-tappin', finger-snappin' "Crabbuckit" (with a rhythmic backdrop that mimics Ray Charles's "Hit the Road Jack"), the reggae-pop mix of "Crucial," and the wily Michael Jackson impersonation of "Man I Used to Be," the wide array of musical reference points show rap's sonic possibilities. The ultramodern blend of frenzied turntable scratches and classical strings on "The Love Song" is reason enough to cop this. --Dalton Higgins

America . . . we have a problem........2007-05-02
Just north of the U.S. border is a little piece of magic called Canada. It's a place many of us here in the States never bother to think about. That must be why we are missing out on so much that Canada has to offer. The best thing Canada has to offer (besides Mellyssa Ford, Deborah Cox and Tamia) is the music of k-os.
He is, hands down, one of the most talented artists making music today. His second album, "Joyful Rebellion", should be looked at as "Exhibit B", with his first, "Exit", being "Exhibit A". From front to back, "Joyful Rebellion" is an overall enjoyable listen. k-os' musical style ranges from rock to rap, to soul and back. The best part about it is that he's actually very good! You need this in your life.
Lightning strikes twice.......2007-03-30
With Joyful Rebellion, K-Os has unleashed another near flawless album. The production on Joyful Rebellion is a slight improvement over K-Os's previous album, Exit, without sounding overproduced. My favorite tracks are Emcee Murdah, Crabbuckit, The Love Song, and Dirty Water. Do yourself a favor and pick up this album as soon as possible. But be forewarned: You won't look at rap music the same anymore!
talented hip hop artist for once.......2006-08-05
k-os was always keeping it real. And when I first heard man I used to be I also thought of michael jackson(and marvin gaye) and thought I was the only one but I guess I wasn't after all. It's an awesome song and whenever it's on the radio we turn it up real loud. Keep doing your thing k-os Canada loves you!
Awesome!!!! 4 and half stars.......2006-05-30
When I heard Man I Used To Be and Crabbuckit on the radio I liked them a lot so I figured I would buy the album and find out just how good K-OS was. When I first listened to the album I was disappointed because it was not what I expected, but I figured I would give it a chance and play it through a couple times. Three or four reruns later I couldn't play it enough. And from then on my addiction to the K-OS and his Joyful Rebellion just kept on growing.
K-OS is a breath of fresh air from the more 'popular' hip-hop artists. Distancing himself from the obscene lyrics and the 'gangsta' rapper image K-OS shows what being emcee is all about. Its not about having fancy cars, beautiful girls and dying in a blazing gunfight, its about making good music. And thats exactly what K-OS does without any of the ego stroking or negative stereotypes.
There are some songs which are little weak such as One Blood and Hallelujah but otherwise K-OS's lineup in Joyful Rebellion is air tight. Dirty Water, the product of his colusion with Sam Roberts (another great Canadian artist) is excellent. Other tracks that are exceptional are B-Boy Stance, Neutroniks, Emcee Murdah and Crucial.
close, but...........2006-04-28
K-Os is unbelievably talented. There is no single bad song in Joyful rebellion. There are straight up hip hop songs and soulful ballads like "superstar". This album is lyrically and musically perfect but the problem is that it has no real depth. I feel like all the songs could be about anything. He lyrically and musically surpasses Mos Def but his words are pop song words and don't have the depth of true hip hop liek Mos Def has. Still, overall, I think this is an album you have to have. I also think we can expect better from K-Os in the future. Oh, and by the way, for all the reviewers comparing K-Os to Wyclef: K-Os makes Wyclef look like a nursery school rapper.

Union Underground's debut album is a bit of a mixed bag. Though they come from the industrial end of heavy metal, they're at their best when they incorporate the back-to-basics Southern grind of Monster Magnet and White Zombie on excellent tracks such as "Turn Me on 'Mr. Deadman'" and "South Texas Deathride." The amped-up spirit of grunge-rockers Alice in Chains loom large over "Killing the Fly" and "Revolution Man." Unfortunately, "Until You Crack" is fairly predictable, while "Trip" boasts ridiculous lyrics ("I'm a junkie / God is gay"). --Robert Burrow

One of my favorite albums over time.......2007-07-06
I first bought this album sometime in middle school, [...] I believe. I was in the midst of a big Powerman 5000, Monster Magnet, etc., kick, and they had come up through some recommendation. I bought it then, which was around 8 years ago, and lost it sometime in college. I recently repurchased it, and it was as excellent as I remember. It's one of the only albums I can sit down at any point in time, and listen to. It's also great music to just turn on and let play while doing other stuff. The first two tracks took a little while to get into, but tracks like Revolution Man and Bitter have always been favorites of mine. It's really unfortunate despite the rumors, that they never put out another album, as I think they would have only grown better. As is, for a first and only album, it's fantastic, and a great listen any time.
great listen over the years.......2006-12-02
even though there was unfortunately no follow up to this album, i must say even after five years of owning it, it never got old. the songs are short and sweet enough that the cd invites you to listen to it in its entirety. in this day and age, i only buy cd's from artists i really respect and i would buy this album time and time again if i had to.
A Promising Band That Never Filled It's Potential.......2006-07-21
The Union Underground have not been heard of as much since their appearance on Ozzfest 2001. Even though on Ozzfest they proclaimed to release a new cd and played one of the tracks on the "soon to be released" CD, that was never actually released. This CD was definitely good but apparently the band didn't really pursue to follow up too much, which could be due to many various reasons. It has been too long for them to expect their name to do much for them as the time in which they came out is long since gone. My personal opinion is that it is a mix of southern rock(Pantera) with a nu metal(Slipknot) edge and then a bit of an industrial(Nine Inch Nails) feel to it. It is definitely worth a listen, or even worth buying, but don't expect any strong follow up. . . ever.
One Of The Overall CDs I Own.......2006-04-15
Every once and awhile i find a CD that is great. This is one of them. I really started listening to UU at the end of 2005. I bought the cd at a local music store because it was really hard to find in other bigname stores. I was introduced to UU when i was watching Monday Night Raw, A wrestling program. I heard the song and immediatly downloaded it from iTunes. Then like other band if i liek a song ill buy their cds. This is one of those CDS that is purly excellent. You know.... the cds when u fall in love with EVERY DAM SONG ON IT!
I only know of a few other cds in my eye that has only good songs.
Nevermind-Nirvana
Americana-Offspring
Every Six Seconds-Saliva
Sinner and Desensitized-Drowning Pool
My Favorite songs on this cd are "Revolution Man" (download the video off iTunes it rocks)"Trip With Jesus", my favorite song on the CD, and "South Texas Deathride".(i reconmend get "Ozzfest 2001 2nd Millenium" and "Live...One Nation Underground" to hear great live versions of the song.
Incredible Sound!.......2006-03-24
This is one of the best "old" albums I've bought in quite some time. It's been a strange year for me, as far as my tastes in music. I've been continually frustrated with the selection in music stores, and I am growing EXCEPTIONALLY upset with the radio cuts of what they consider "good" rock. Therefore, I've been scanning Amazon's collection and looking for ANYTHING that MIGHT be good between 1989 - 1997.
I got REALLY lucky when I ran across this band.
I can compare them to so many other bands, but they only seem to adopt certain qualities from each, so in a sense, they're a hybrid of originality. Take the frontman's voice. It reminds me at most times of Layne Staley (RIP), but at other times, it borders a Manson-esque/Rob Zombie feel. The guitars are tight, and while the riffs aren't necessarily all original, the twist of electronica gives each song a totally new appeal. The percussion section isn't anything that struck me as amazing, but this is good; it somehow meshes well within the song. (Most industrial-flavored bands-at least to me-have drums that stand out a little bit too much, making it easier to identify flaws or awkward musicianship).
What makes this album stand out is the INTENSITY each member puts into each song. I know I could be cyber-hanged for saying this, but I think they are BETTER than PM5K (whom I love, by the way). There seems to be a lot more vocal flexibility...the frontman ranges between creepy, growly whispers to throaty, infectious screams, to edgy anti-pop vocals (probably bad wording...think of Rob Zombie when he's carrying tunes instead of screaming or whispering). That's the best analogy I can think of at the moment.
As far as I'm concerned, there's not a bad song on the album, but there ARE standouts. Obviously, the ferocity displayed in "South Texas Death Ride" and "Turn Me On, Mr. Deadman" are immediate moshpit starters. "Killing the Fly" slows down the pace just a little, until the prechorus storms in with the anthemic: "I wanna break you!...". And personally, I don't care what the Amazon.com editor says. "Trip with Jesus" is THE best song on the album. Listen to it ONCE...LOUDLY. I guarantee you, you will find more climaxes in this song than any industrial band out there today...and this includes most Nine Inch Nails tracks.
Angry, bitter, fast-paced, and so much fun. I wish they had more albums out...I would definitely buy them.
Even if you still believe this review is questionable (and I guarantee, if you like Rob Zombie or PM5K, you'll love this stuff), it's really cheap, so what have you got to lose? Seriously...pick this UP!!!

Like Metallica, this So-Cal hardcore quartet has matured smartly into a rock juggernaut without betraying its initial fire and anger. The Peter (Queensryche) Collins production shines on "Accept My Sacrifice" and "Monopoly on Sorrow." --Jeff Bateman

My intro. to Suicidal Tendencies.......2005-05-13
As my title says, this was the first Suicidal Tendencies album I got. I expected it to sound punky, as everyone says they're so good a punk band. I was surprised, and NOT the bad kind! This album is straight forward metal. The first two albums had a punk influence, but HCILTWICEST and everything afterwards was a metal album. This is one of the best albums of the 90's. Mike Muir's vocals are top-notch here. Rob Trujillo's bass is great, the guitars from Mike Clark and the other guitarist (forgot his name...sorry!) are great, as are the drums. The album starts out with "Cant' Stop". NO, not the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song! It's one of the longer songs, but it's a great start to this great album. The next songs, "Accept My Sacrifice" and "Nobody Hears", are my favorite songs on this album. I like all the songs on this album, but the above three are my favorites. Recommended if you like metal, speed metal, and Suicidal Tendencies.

PS, new Suicidal Tendencies album later this year!
It contains one of the most mesmerizing songs ever!!!.......2005-03-09
I am 36 and have been listening to hard rock/metal since I was only nine. I own more than 1,500 hard rock/metal CDs. I am not bragging here, but rather trying to put things into perspective when talking about this album.
This whole album is incredible. It's easily ST's best, but you got to let it grow on you for a while. This CD contains ST's best song ever, and one of my top ten songs of all time: "Asleep at the Wheel". I probably have listened to that song more than 1,000,000 times since this CD came out, and I still close my eyes and sing it out loud EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! It's a very original song, impossible to describe with words. It's magical, it's mesmerizing (By the way, you may skip the first two minutes of the song since they are very forgettable and have actually a different name - "I Wasn't Meant to Feel This").
Another great song is "Monopoly of Sorrow", especially after the 3:37 mark. This has to be one of the best song endings that I have ever herad. That combination of fast pace acoustic and electric guitars is simply top notch.
Anyway, get this CD and let it grow on you. You will not regret it.
Hard rock can be art.......2005-02-25
When I bought this album I didnt get what I thought I was getting into. For awhile I was highly dissappointed listening to it, and to be honest I didnt like it to much. I gave 'The Art of Rebellion' some time though, and it grew on me. The lyrics can be a bit corny and annoying some of the time though, and that brings it down a half point - from a perfect five to a 4.5. Thats still really great, and perfect albums that truly warrent five stars are really far in between for me though. For anyone who wants an album they can listen to years for now (unlike those whiny emo bands who will be gone after the fad wears off), then pick up this album. You cant stop the run away emotions in me, you know... Never mind. Buy the album and you will know what I'm talking about.
I agree--best ST album and last good one.......2005-01-19
I love this disk,I am a huge fan and like all there stuff up to this cd.after that it went pretty down hill.
every song grabs you from start to end.
a lot of people did not think it was hard enough, but it is and it has some real musical substance.i say buy it you wont be sorry. I would give more stars if I could.
A good comeback after "Lights".......2004-04-07
This album is more like "Lights" than "How Will I Laugh" in it's song writing style but done way better. The tunes are good, not dry like "Lights" and the album feels well-produced. You'll find the songs high in content and quality but not that fast or thrashy. This is NOTHING like early S.T.'s but it is a good album nonetheless. I regard this as Suicidal's last good album. Trust me, after this, it's completely downhill in the worst way.

Great Great Album, but . . ........2005-02-12
It could have my 5 stars.
but the copyright protection ruin the CD once again, I can't put it into my iPod or computer media to listen to!
What a waste!
I'm so disappointed that Amazon should state the fact if the CD is copyright protected.
Wow.......2005-01-20
Having previously heard only a few of his songs I didnt expect very much but I decided to buy it in order to suport an artist that would truly deserve it. I was - and still am- very impressed by this album. The production is amazing and K-OS's talent is undeniable; he's not only a rapper, his singing voice is reminiscent of Bob Marley's. This is one of those albums you want to have for life, it's a classic with the kind of tracks (Love Song, Crucial, Man I Used To Be, B-boy Stance...oh what the hell, all of them) that will never grow old. I hope that K-OS gets all the respect he deserves as a talented artist because that's what he is; a true artist.
POSSIBLY THE BEST HIP-HOP ALBUM OF ALL TIME.......2004-12-28
He tells you what he thinks, and what is damn true right off the bat. Hip-hop is dying, and its being killed by money, cheddah, the bling bling, all that crap. Stop it, you damn sellouts. This is such a good CD. Amazing lyrics, amazing production. This is a message that needs to reach all music listeners. This is real hip-hop. If you don't pick this up, you don't know hip-hop. Straight up. If you loved this, you'll love The New Danger, by Mos Def. If you listen to all of the last track on Joyful Rebellion, there is a secret message from K-Os himself, in a high pitched voice.
such a musically gifted guy..........2004-12-03
everything about this CD is awsome. He starts off with a sick slow beat lyrically sound song in mcee murda, and then goes on and on switching up his styles. He'll throw some up-beat reggae at you, then switch it up to pure hip hop. I can sense a hint of jazz in this CD which adds another style to the list in K-OS's arsenal. Great CD, one of my all time favs...
One of thse albums.......2004-11-04
I've had a healthy respect of K-os for as long as I've known of his work. I picked up this album as soon as it came out and I was VERY pleased because - for the first time in a long time - every track was fantastic (nearly perfect) and the songs only grew on me after I listened to the disc 40 or 50 times.
JOYFUL REBELLION is the best disc of 2004, with the percussion that could come out of 40's New York, singing that could come out of the 70's Kingston, Spanish guitars and rich strings which are timeless, and, of course, rap that would be at home in the Bronx in the golden age of hip hop. It's varied in style, but never in quality.
Anyway, the point is, listen to the album - or in the very least, see him in concert. It's a rare thing to see someone live who you know will become a musicial legend, and it's even rarer to hear a CD which is your favourite album after the fist listen.
