Within the soul-drenched music of northern Florida's JJ Grey and band, the roots run as deep as the influences are indelible. "War" and "By My Side" sound like Southern-fried Sly and the Family Stone. "Turpentine" recalls the swamp funk of Tony Joe White. Both "A Woman" and "The Sun Is Shining Down" suggest long-lost Otis Redding sessions in Muscle Shoals, while "Mississippi" takes Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on a trip down to the delta. From the harmonica-laced country blues of the title track to the gospel piano and choir of "On Palestine," Grey's music compensates with conviction for what it lacks in originality. --Don McLeese

Album Description

JJ Grey & MOFRO's Alligator debut, Country Ghetto features 12 original JJ Grey compositions that come right out of the Southern musical and literary tradition. Grey's ear for detail inhabits his songs, whether it is a story passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend. His voice delivers them with an unflinching strength that makes the personal universal and paints a vivid portrait of an exact time or place with words and music. Like his songs, his rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly old beyond his years. And the music, from smoldering soul ballads to gospel-fried funk to straight ahead rock `n' roll, brings it all home with danceable grooves and a melodic freshness that will stay with you long after the album ends.

Grey's songwriting influences are widespread. "I listen to people who tell the story," he says, naming Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, R.L. Burnside, Tony Joe White, Jerry Reed, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone, Van Morrison, Bill Withers and Dan Penn. What these writers and performers have in common is a love for simplicity, evoking complex emotions with a minimal number of words. As a performer, Grey is influenced by the sexually charged blues of Howlin' Wolf, the country soul of George Jones and the hard funk of James Brown, as well as local personalities like street preachers and old time radio DJs.

5 out of 5 stars JJ & Mofro will make you swing.......2007-07-17

Saw these guys at Wakarusa rock fest in Kansas this June and they blew the crowd away. JJ and the band sound like a modern version of some country funk time machine. I told friends to catch thes guys when they played an outdoor show in Iowa with B.B. King. My friends agreed, these guys are full of soul and can really rock. Great cd, buy it, go see their show. This is the real deal!!

5 out of 5 stars music review.......2007-07-11

I love this cd. It is in frequent rotation at my house. It is good on two levels. For one, the funky swamp infested bluesy songs will have you dancing, but the quieter "love songs" are really earthy and sensual as well. It is a great combination of styles and musical instrumentation. I hope they keep on making great music for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Cant go wrong with Country Ghetto.......2007-06-20

I could write something about how much I love every song on this album but all I need to say is INSTANT CLASSIC. If you love Southern Fried Soul Music these are your guys.

"The Sun Is Shining Down" and "Tragic" are especialy powerful songs.

Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Another letter from home........2007-05-29

If you've never heard MoFro, then you need to tune in to and find out about some "front porch soul". If you HAVE heard the first two albums, don't think Country Ghetto is some rehash of previous material to fulfill a label contract. It IS the same soulful instrumentation and vocals. But JJ has more stories to tell and they come across to me like a letter from home - full of honest emotion about things we share, the good and the bad. Country Ghetto has a more serious feel to it for me than MOFRO and LOCHLOOSA. Its not just the lyrics of a young inciteful poet, talking about life. Its the lyrics of a man, living life with the convictions, dignity and respect for life you learn when you grow up in a Country Ghetto.

Roman Polanski's telling of famed Polish composer-pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman's survival in the Nazi-controlled Warsaw ghetto can't help but be infused with the director's deepest passions: he himself escaped the Kraków ghetto as a boy of 7. The musician's status as a musical hero to the oppressed Polish Jews of World War II was surpassed only by that of Chopin, the composer who was at the core of Szpilman's repertoire. Thus this score revolves tightly around Chopin's music, with modern Polish pianist Janusz Olejniczak paying passionate homage to both his musical and national forebears, the haunting strains of the Nocturne in C-sharp Minor setting the film's historical and dramatic tone. The underscore of previous Polanski collaborator Wojciech Kilar (The Ninth Gate, Death and the Maiden) is represented here by the soulful "Moving to the Ghetto," a cue that helps anchor the soundtrack's troubling time and place with understated grace. The collection concludes with a rare, remastered performance of Chopin's Mazurka Op. 17, No.4 by Szpilman himself, recorded in Warsaw in 1948. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......2006-02-11

While being very familiar with the Holocaust and F. Chopin's work, I have to admit I had no idea who Wladyslaw Szpilman was. After watching Polanski's masterpiece of a movie, I'm glad that I got to know the life of a man who went through hell and managed to survive thanks to the courage and strength given to him by Chopin's music that he constantly played in his head under surreal circumstances.

"The Pianist" music soundtrack is a wonderful collection of Chopin's piano works. Of course a few masterpieces of the polish great composer have been left out, but I think that's more than understable. After all, Polanski needed certain pieces that connected best with some of the images and scenes of his movie. And in the end we all agree that he certainly pulled it off.

Before watching the movie, I didn't know who Janusz Olejniczak was either. Now I do. His Chopin is really marvellous, especially the "Nocturne in C-sharp Minor", "La grande Polonaise brillante" and "Nocturne in E Minor Op. 72 No 1". Getting to know Olejniczak's Chopin is yet another reason to be thankful to Polanski.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2006-01-30

While not versed in the finer aspects of classical music or their composers as other reviewers on this page are, I like to think of myself as someone who appreciates classical music and the Pianist soundtrack is classical music at its best.

Being half-Polish, I heard of Frederic Chopin through the years but was never told of him or his beautiful - if somewhat sad - music (I learned much about Beethoven, my favorite composer, though). I was cheated but feel that I have caught up for lost time with this soundtrack.

My favorite track is "Nocturne in E Minor, Op. 72, No. 1." It's four and a half minutes of pure bliss. Kudos to Janusz Olejniczak for playing beyond beautiful piano (he's not a concert pianist for no reason, eh?).

The Pianist is one of the best movie soundtracks of all time. The movie was powerful (unlike *other* directors who made Holocaust films, Roman actually lived through that black period in human history, making it a cut above the rest), the book was moving and the soundtrack is great relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars one word beautiful.......2005-11-08

Excellent and very beautiful. The Grand Polonaise in E flat major fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars Felt the movie, now feel the music that truly inspires.........2005-05-29

The Pianist is a great and "fantaztisch" movie itself! Note the great actors Adrien Brody and Thomas Kretschmann. Now, how would the movie be without the music itself that inspired and still inspiring thousands of people who listened to it.

All the piano works are classical and have a story of it's own.
From the Nocturnes; sad, moving and played on the first part of the movie (yes, the intro) and when the jews are fighting and facing their nightmares.
To Ballade 1 & 2, which was played by Spilzman (adrien brody) in that movie when he met up with the german officer Hosenfeld (thomas kretschmann)..

Just by listening to the soundtrack you could already see and feel the whole movie. Especially the Nocturnes... very touching.. recommending this album to those who fell in love to the piano works in the movie like i was, just by listening it for the first time! :)

5 out of 5 stars A Too-Easily Dismissed Artist.......2005-05-09

A previous reviewer considerately corrected others who are perhaps not as well versed as he is about classical music. That reviewer also quite cavalierly dismissed the playing of Janusz Olejniczak, chiefly it appears because this is a movie soundtrack.
A number of eminent pianists - Rubinstein, Bolet, Moravec, Ax, among many others - have recorded movie soundtracks. And, like them, Olejniczak has recorded a great deal more. For instance, his albums for the Opus 111 label, which also recorded Sokolov, should be sampled by all lovers of Chopin, if only because Olejniczak can be heard playing on one record an Erard piano from Chopin's time, and on another an even more remarkable Pleyel. It's fascinating to find the Erard really does have what Chopin called a "ready-made" tone; the Pleyel by comparison is a revelation.
But then so it the playing of Olejniczak. He was not discovered by Roman Polanski. Olejniczak was a prize-winner of the Warsaw Chopin competition at the age of 18. He is greatly respected in his native Poland and in Japan, which both know something about great Chopin playing.
Olejniczak is a forceful artist who nevertheless never pounds; one frequently is put in mind of how Chopin envied the powerful way Liszt played his etudes. Olejniczak's Polish "accent" is, of course, entirely appropriate for Chopin, as is his wonderful voicing of chords and sure but free rhythm. Olejniczak plays with a full-throated lyricism -- it is the Bellini of "Norma" rather than "Sonnambula" -- but the pianist can also be touchingly tender. Above all he is dramatic in the fullest sense, vividly characterizing each piece. It's easy to see why Polanski and other film directors have been drawn to him. Chopin clearly is Olejniczak's life blood.
That previous reviewer may sincerely prefer such very different musicians, one to the other, as Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Cortot and Argerich, but I hope no one will hold it against Olejniczak (who, by the way, I don't know personally -- no special pleading here!) simply because he is not as widely known as some other pianists. He is a genuine find, and Polanski should be thanked for sharing a superb talent with a wider public.

4 out of 5 stars Funky & Danceable 3rd LP from hip-hop's Teacher--.......2007-06-04

Ghetto Music--
Released in the summer of 1989, Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip-Hop was the third studio album from Boogie Down Productions. The music is crisp and thick with rhythm. Sonically, Ghetto Music is slightly less up-tempo than both Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary. KRS-One flaunts his reggae influence more than ever with this album, and even incorporates more live instruments on several songs.

Standout cuts include "Jah Rules" with a nice sung chorus by group member Harmony; "Jack of Spades" gives the lowdown on Keenan Ivory Wayans' vigilante hero from I'm Gonna Get You Sucka; "Why is That" re-imagines Biblical characters with an Afrocentric view and criticizes America's public education systems; "Who Protects us from You?" admonishes police brutality: "So do not kick my door down and tie me up while my wife cooks the stew; `cause you were put here to protect us, but who protects us from you?"

The most surreal narrative is "Bo! Bo! Bo!": KRS One's lyrics find himself being rousted by police while on his morning jog; the confrontation turns ugly, and before he knows it, he's taking on several cops in a shootout, blacks out, then wakes up in a bookstore that apparently doubles as a headquarters for militants. "World Peace" is a good closer to the album, with KRS advising banner-waving types that they need to be more aggressive if they really want to achieve their goals. A re-release should include any available bonus material, including the superior remix to "You Must Learn".

3 out of 5 stars KRS already made an album called Blueprint first..................2006-12-30

So says Nas. KRS went from being a hiphop B-Boy to straight teacher and preacher on Blueprint. I remember when this joint dropped in the summer of 89. It was too preachy for a summer record and not as dope or ground breaking as his hit Self Destruction or PE's Nation of Millions.

4 out of 5 stars Propaganda? Sure...great hip hop? Definitely..........2005-09-13

A phrase I've seen a time or two in reference to James Brown and Little Richard suggests that they can be forgiven their egotism because their music lives up to the boasts. That thought came to mind after ingesting this CD from "The Teacher" KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions.

Those who suggest this disc is musical propaganda are correct. Kris Parker's general message here is that the police are not to be trusted, the educational system is failing to pass on the achievements of black Americans of the past and of African culture, and that sometimes a black man's only friend is his firearm. He uses an intense vocal delivery while musically smooth rhythms take some of the edge off the bitter pill. Reggae flavors turn up often, being most pronounced (ironically enough) on "Hip Hop Rules". The group also make time for a nod to the beat box sound in "Breath Control".

HIGHLIGHTS:
The scratched hook of "Jack of Spades" is relentless. Ever wonder where the origins of "throw your hands in the air" were? Check the rhyme...Parker's sister Pamela "Harmony" Scott turns in a nicely soulful vocal on spiritual paean "Jah Rulez". ("What can they do?/What can they say?/They can't live without your love/another day...") "Who Protects us from You?" aims at police brutality, questioning whether the quality of protection varies by class. ("It seems that when you walk the ghetto/You walk with your own point of view...") "You Must Learn" indicts the educational establishment's failure to teach about the achievements of forebears like Benjamin Banneker (creator of the almanac) and Granville Woods (inventor of the walkie-talkie). It's not just young blacks who miss out here. ("When one doesn't know about the other one's culture/Ignorance swoops down like a vulture..") Gangsta rap template "Bo! Bo! Bo!" is catchy, if not more than a little disingenuous on a disc that also includes "World Peace" and the logo of the "Stop the Violence" movement.

LOWS:
"World Peace" is simultaneously musically catchy and lyrically vapid. "If we really want world peace/and we want it right now/We must make up our mind to take it.." is the answer according to Parker but that doesn't take into account the fact that many world conflicts are based in deep seated religious or ethnic divisions that won't go away just because of "positivity".

BOTTOM LINE:
You have to take some of the "education" here with a grain of salt. But there can be no doubt at all about KRS' skill on the mic. He absolutely defines the foundations of old school hip-hop and this album is one of rap's cornerstones. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS I HAVE EVER HEARD.......2005-09-10

in a world overpopulated by fake gangastas, players, thugs, and wannabe rappers krs-one has constantly proven himself time and time again to be one of the greatest MCs of all time I recall seeing him live in 2002 and to this day he is still one of my favorite performers. I mean were talking about a guy who over the years has literally crushed thousands of MCs and wack crews both here and overseas how many MCs do you know who can claim that. This album is B.D.P. at the top of his game blazing lyrics and beats that are a good 10 years ahead of their time and when you look at other rappers from that timeframe such as kane and Kool Moe Dee without a doubt B.D.P was the best. while not as good as Edutainment this album is still a wonderful introduction for anyone looking to get into BDP or hip hop in general.

5 out of 5 stars You must learn!.......2005-07-26

Any BDP cd is an instant classic. KRS-1 is your favorite MC's MC. Learn hip hop from the TEACHER!!! Extremely DOPE!!!

Album Description

In Jamaica's ultra-competitive music scene, stars are born every day and fade away just as fast. But ever since the mid 1990's, Baby Cham has represented the best of cutting-edge dancehall reggae. His every release seems to bring forth new sounds, new slang, and up-to-the-minute ghetto news reports guaranteed to "bust the dance", and this release is no exception.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CHAM DOES IT AGAIN !!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-22

this album is really good, this is one is a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Stick with Sizzla and Capleton...........2007-02-08

I'm not totally sure what to think of this album, but one thing is for sure, I definitely do not like it. As far as the dancehall genre is concerned, this album falls far short. There are no tracks on this album that actually makes you want to dance. To get a true taste of Dancehall reggae, stick with "Reign of Fire" or "Black Woman and Child."

If I were to judge this album on its own merit, I would give it a 3/5 stars, but I do think that is being a bit generous. I suppose the album is worth checking out, Cham certainly has a unique sound, but it is nothing to laud.

5 out of 5 stars Cham Nails it WOW WOW.......2006-10-05

Cham came through on this album, from start to finish, the whole thing can be played through. I give Dave Kelly much respect for the effort he put forth with Cham. An essential Dancehall album!

2 out of 5 stars Not too Great.......2006-08-21

I don't know if we are all listening to the same CD but this CD is no good. Cham is capable of more. I've heard half these tunes, how many remixes of ghetto story which is over a year old are we gonna hear. The tunes are old and it's disappointing that reggae artists always have to use old tunes on their album all thet time. Sorry this album doesn't cut it.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Dancehall Reggae Album.......2006-08-21

Chances are you have heard the song "Ghetto Story," by Cham featuring Alicia Keys on the radio this summer. Well Cham (the artist formerly known as Baby Cham), has released his latest CD titled Ghetto Story. The 17 track album was produced by David Kelly. If you pop in the CD, you will soon hear the music and lyrics of the song "Ghetto Story," without Alicia Keys. It seems kind of strange that the lesser known version of the song is featured as the first song, but fear not the Alicia Keys version of "Ghetto Story," which is titled "Ghetto Story Chapter 2," is track #15 on the album.

Cham is a true reggae/dancehall artist. On Ghetto Story he doesn't try to be something that he isn't. He delivers true reggae music on this album. His well known song "Vitamin S," is featured on Ghetto Story as well as the popular song "Boom Boom," featuring Rihanna. Other stand-up tracks on the CD include "Bad Boys," featuring Tia Jean and "Girl," featuring Jimmy Cheazetrix.

Cham's latest CD is a solid effort. It has a very authentic reggae/dancehall sound to it, so he will probably have to team up with mainstream artists to get heavy airplay in the U.S. He's off to a great start though.

The CD features two bonus tracks. A third version of "Ghetto Story," featuring Akon and a song titled "Bad Mind."

Former George Clinton and Maxwell sideman Amp Fiddler walks his own middle ground on Waltz of a Ghetto Fly. Neither as all-out funkadelic as Clinton or as straight-ahead romantic as Maxwell, Fiddler offers a keyboard-heavy blend of styles that's both airy and rooted in a deep groove. Overdubbing harmonies, he presses his rangy voice to its expressive limits. "Superficial" begins with a rhythm pattern that sounds like Blondie's "Heart of Glass" turned inside out before bursting into a Latin-dance extravaganza. Other tracks benefit from jazz touches, such as the elegant piano solo that highlights "Possibilities." Fiddler's songs are often little more than vamps, but it's this brand of musicality that lights them up. --Rickey Wright

This is one the best R & B soul albums of the millenium in my opinion. Every song is sophisticated & smart yet simple & smooth. I've heard the instrumental from 'Waltz of a Ghetto Fly' before. It's the hidden end track on Q-Tip's solo album 'Amplified'. Oh...and, speaking of hidden songs the one after 'Waltz' is splendid. Don't forget to fast foward or you'll be missing out.

5 out of 5 stars soooo smooth n sexy.......2006-08-04

I struggle to fathom how one album can exude so much sexiness, but 'Waltz of a Ghetto Fly' managfes it.

Amp Fiddler's voice is smoother then Teflon, and this album doesn't dissapoint.

Some stand out tracks include: 'I believe in you','superficial' and 'dreamin'.

If you ever get the opportunity to see the man live, your in for one hell of a suprise.

He is one brotha that sold me on the first go round. When he drops a new one, I won't hesistate to buy it. I rock this CD in my Jeep and the bass on Dreaming is kicking....I love this brotha...can't wait to see him in person... Nothing like AMP to get you going in the day... Verjaunne - Baltimore, MD

Despite the distinctive phrasing and tone associated with each member of this trio and the fact that they all write for their own particular vocal styles, there is a Meditations sound--passionate, yearning, roots-raw, and, above all, messianic. Danny Clarke, Ansel Cridland, and Winston Watson have broken up and reunited more times than anyone can count since they first got together in the '70s, the heyday of reggae's harmony trios. Over the years, they fired the musicscape with hits like "Fly Your Natty Dread," "Rasta Shall Conquer," "Standing on the Corner," "Turn Me Loose," and "Woman Is Like a Shadow," a paradigm of male misogyny drawn from the poisonous stream that, unfortunately, runs throughout reggae history. Oh well, they know not what they do. And despite all those breakups to makeups, the Meditations sound as good as ever. Their tone remains as baldly challenging to the corrupt powers that be as those villains deserve. The harmonies strike a perfect balance between rough and polished, and the writing is surprisingly current and fresh. Though Watson takes the lead less often than the more prolific Cridland, Watson's roots from-the-gut singing style in "Living on the Edge"--reminiscent of the operatic Prince Lincoln--is a standout. And the group's bouncing covers of Bob Marley's "Blackman Redemption" and Curtis Mayfield's "Do Be Down" provide the yardsticks to measure these vets against reggae's many other trios. --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars best of 1999.......1999-07-13

This is the best reggae cd of 1999! The Meditations have done it again with a killer collection of new material. The harmonies are sweet, the lyrics catchy, and the music wicked. Standouts are "Jah Music", "Ghetto is a College", and "Educated Fools." It's nice to see that someone is keeping true roots and culture alive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic Reggae.......1999-05-04

Whether you are a hard core reggae fanatic or just a casual listener, you will enjoy this album. It contains classic style reggae with great rhythms and hypnotic beats.

5 out of 5 stars The New Message from the Meditations.......1999-04-18

The "old time something" comes back again in contemporary style on the Meditations' new CD "Ghetto Knowledge." Though the trio rose to prominence as a classic harmony trio in the 70s--reggae's golden era--the album sounds fresh and modern. Its musical foundation is classical roots reggae; socially conscious lyrics set to bubbling beats, with plenty of Meditations-style blended harmonies. To that mix, each Meditation adds his own special seasonings. Each man is a skilled songwriter and sings lead on his songs. Meditation Winston lends his silvery falsetto to "Living on the Edge," Danny a mellow croon to "Ghetto is a College," and Meditation Ansel his burnished tenor to the joyous love song "Never Desert You." In addition, there are fine covers of Marley's "Blackman Redemption" (the trio sang backup on the original), and Curtis Mayfield's "Do Be Down." A satisfying album, and a reaffirmation of reggae's joyous, healing power.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning new roots from the legendary trio.......1999-04-08

GHETTO KNOWLEDGE has everything a reggae lover would want in a CD. It has live hardcore roots tracks that stand up to the classic reggae of the 70s as well as modern selections. There are too many great tracks to mention here, but some stand out tracks are: The Police; Ghetto Is A College; Black Man Redemption (a remake of the Bob Marley Classic on which The Meditations sang on) and One of Us. This CD is a must for any collection.

4 out of 5 stars Some of Trip Hop's best.......2003-12-20

I've had this CD for a few years now and I consider it an essential part of my binder. My favorite songs on the album are "The Beat Goes On" by Basco, "Terminal Intensity" by Wizard of Oh and "Weekend Starts Here" by Fatboy Slim. I used to hear the Basco track at raves back in the day and it sounded a lot better at a faster tempo, but its still a good track. The Wizard of Oh track sounds in some ways similar to my all time favorite Prodigy song, Poison, and the Fatboy Slim track sounds similar to a once popular Snoop Doggy Dogg song. This album was made around the same time so the DJ's and producers were using the same machines. Its interesting to hear how different ideas materialized using the same medium. This is definitely not to say that these songs are a rip off of other commercial hits. As for "Nothing Like Tomorrow" thats my least favorite song on this album and I don't feel it even belongs on here. I skip this track every time I get to it. I just cant stand the bassline. I'm not an authority on the matter, but I don't think that track even qualifies as Trip Hop.

1 out of 5 stars The Oversoul Song.......2001-03-26

Please ignore the rating, but if you listen to the sample the song "Nothing Like Tomorrow" and really like it, or if you have the CD and really like that song check out the band "Supreme Beings of Leisure" because it sounds like it is them under a different name. Their debut is self-titled and pretty good. In fact a different version of "Nothin' like Tomorrow" appears on it. I don't think they sound at all like Portishead-- Much more upbeat.

2 out of 5 stars Is missing something.......2000-06-11

In my opinion, this CD is a all right but needs to be listened to couple of times before you can really start to appreciate it. It doesn't have anything that really grabs your attention at the first time so it is a potential for one of those CD's that is forgotten after a while. It is also missing the depth to it and is all to alike. I liked Nothing Like Tomorrow - Oversoul 7 the most. It reminded me of Portishead and was the only song that really got to me. It had a mysterious sound to it and by listening to it you feel like you are drifting away. I am an avid fan of music that gets deep into the soul and has a beautiful sound. Most of the other songs on the CD were too alike to each other. I personally prefer more variety I would recommend this CD if you have patience and are ready to listen to it couple of times before you start liking it. I have to admit that I do not know much about the other music they have made so I wouldn't be able to compare it to that so I will leave it to say that I am willing to keep this CD but I would not invest in any others without prior listening.

5 out of 5 stars The birth of a legend.......2003-09-23

This album is essential to any music collection. Sugar Minott's first self produced LP shows the love and dedication of someone bursting with talent. The music is classic Roots Radics and the dubs are haunting. Now that this release is finally on CD, get your copy today! And listen for the backwards guitar, they may not have had much money in 1979 Kingston, but they were not short of innovation.

1 out of 5 stars Dem sugar no sweet.......2003-05-03

I did not like this album at all. I am not a fan of dub, but the roots was basically a juvenille effort to pull something together on the fly. Really disappointing lyrics, and n.o. vocal range.

4 out of 5 stars Dubroom Review.......2001-11-09

"I was so naive about being a star. I just wanted to play the music. When it hit, man... look here, this picture on the cover, in the boathouse, my girlfriend made me this shirt, Big Youth gave me his old guitar, and I don't remember where I got this hat from."

Ghetto-ology: living in the ghetto.

Ghetto-ology: Originally released in 1979, Sugar's first self-produced album.

Or albums, I should say. Because Ghetto-ology originally came in two versions, a vocal and a dub album. You can hear Sugar Minott, just after he left Studio One, and before he became to know as the godfather of Rub A Dub. Most tracks were layed down at the Channel One Studios by the then relatively new Soul Syndicate. The Dubs were mixed by Prince Jammy and the unknown Lancelot Mc Kenzie at King Tubby's. Also you'll hear Freddie Mc Gregor... on dums!

Ghetto--ology comes with a small booklet, unfortunatly not as descriptive as Blood & Fire always does, but it contains a little interview with Sugar Minott, conducted in 2000. Personally, I like every track on this album, especially the dubs. They all deal with conscious subjects and there's a good mix between militant steppers and one drops. Spiritually uplifting, definitly! Where you hear so many rich people say they do not believe in Jah because of all the suffering, it is the sufferer's themselves that cry unto JAH. The dubs all have a completely different musical atmosphere then their vocal counterparts. A suberb master piece of mixing, I must say.

5 out of 5 stars Great Roots Re-Release.......2000-08-06

Roots reggae collectors -- it's a classic! Positive message music.

5 out of 5 stars A classic rediscovered.......2000-06-16

This release brings to light one of sugar minott's greatest recordings, Ghetto-ology, which was one of his first productions after leaving Studio One in 1978. The music is mainly provided by the Soul Syndicate Band, best known for playing with Peter Tosh, and here they provide Sugar with highly original backing tracks, loaded with interesting touches like backwards guitar, different percussion instruments, etc. Sugar's voice sounds as good as ever, strong and supple. And Sugar's lyrics bring out life in the ghetto powerfully. This release is also benefitted by the inclusion of the even rarer complete dub version of the album, which was mixed by King Tubby and Prince Jammy. All in all a great release, and a must for anyone interested in roots reggae of the late '70s and early '80s.

1 out of 5 stars Sophomore Blues.......2007-02-19

I was really excited about this cd since I fell in love with Christion's first album, "Ghetto Cyrano". However, I was severely disappointed. It doesn't even have as much soul as most songs on the RADIO!!! The beats are generic and boring, lyrics sound forced and you can just tell that these guys are no longer singing about stuff they understand or know about. "My Reason"?!?! That song's just cheesy and I only listen to it for a good laugh. And "Where Yo Girlfriend At"? Again, only for a good laugh. Not sure what happened between the first album and this one (other than Allen Anthony's departure), but things just ain't the same. And GW's right, most of the reviews claiming this is a must-buy are from family members, friends, managers, and other business partners. KNyte had something to do with their silly "Let Em Know" video, I believe. Anyway, I hope y'all find this review helpful....if you want a Christion cd, go for the first one. But hey, everyone has their own taste in music and maybe y'all don't care bout listening to the real..... but if you do, then stay far far away from this cd (unless you just want somethin for laughs).

3 out of 5 stars Different from first but still smooth.......2006-05-17

I have been a fan of christion since they first came out. I do admit that this is some what different from the first in terms of the music. I think what makes the songs good are the story lines. I loaded the cd to my MP3 player with the first and compared and it still keeps that street (pimps and players) style to the songs. There are some good tracks that start on chapaters 4 and on. The rest are something that I would say you have to relate to in order to understand. You can notice the difference of A.A not being in the group. As a matter of fact, the best songs on the cd are when he appears on the track. Overall I would say its not a bad CD but if you compare it to the first that was more for the "grown and sexy" then you would not feel it as much. You can also tell that the touch of Jay-Z is not on this release. He played a big part in the story lines they wrote about while Dame Dash selected the tracks. Out of all the tracks I think most would fall in love with Slown Down, and Broken Streets. "My Reason" should be loaded to your romantic selection. If you are someone that can relate to the stories then by all means you will enjoy the tracks. As for A.A I hear he had an album coming out called Oakland International so lets hope that will entice the hears of the ones missing him.

1 out of 5 stars Whats going on here?.......2006-04-19

First, I was really looking forward to this album. I do understand that people have different tastes but "a must have", and "slammin" and "what music has been missing". I think I found all of the fans that think that American Idol is soulful. This is either a really distasteful joke or its the mothers of the artists leaving comments. Im not trying to rip anyone apart but this album bears "NOT ONE" resemblance of the creativity, the production, and vocals that this group once carried. Ok...so Its different. No big deal. But Im just trying to figure out what these people are listening to. All and all, dont take my word for it. And dont take theirs. Buy it for yourself and Im sure it will become clear on whether this is the last Christion album you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Their may have been a reason for no album in so long.......2006-01-25

The original Roc-A-Fella soul brothers are finally back with an album of smoothed out love songs and up-tempo club jams. The Roc fell apart and they moved on to The Mint and deliver a 20-track album with five chapters and mix results. My first thoughts about this album were that it was too long and that has proven to be true upon repeated listens. The other question I have is what the significance is of the chapters. They are trying to tell a story but the songs in each chapter do not always match up with the chapter's title. As far as the music goes, it's just ok. There are lots of R&B/Soul singers out doin their thing and these two are no different. They have the intense sexual songs (Presidential Suite #8) and they have the love song that goes out to the girl they lost (Farrah #15), did they ever stop and think maybe if they were not out trying to freak every girl they might not have lost that one perfect one? The production is nothing special, Kenni Ski does a decent job pulling double duties as singer and primary beat maker. The one thing that it seems these brothers got goin for em is that they can sing. Their harmonies and verses are generally on point and stand out at times, compared to the rest of today's modern so-called "Soul" singers. If you are looking for some real classic type soul music then go check Bilal, but if you want modern R&B with a touch of the classic seventy's sound this album will probably at least wet your appetite.

3 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPPENED TO THE CROONERS???.......2005-12-14

Christión did some serious croonin' on their debut release "Ghetto Cyrano", bringing us hustlers-need-love-too anthems and street-life grooves reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. Now on their very disappointing follow-up "Project Plato", Christión minus vocalist Allen Anthony have become a bit too mainstream for my taste, sounding a lot like these new kids on the block who beg and whine just to make a dime--y'all know who you are!!! Nothing on "Project Plato" grabbed me, although I'm sure with the current condition of music today it will appeal more to the masses. Every song here lyrically sounds ridiculous and the sexiness seems forced, unlike on "Ghetto Cyrano" when it was natural (obviously due to Anthony's absense). I tried listening for a glimmer of hope on this release--a song that made me fall in love with Christión in the first place, but I simply couldn't. Maybe as I listen to "Project Plato" more, it will grow on me, but that's not likely. I know each artist's release has to progress and shouldn't sound dated. I didn't expect Christión to sound the way they did eight years ago, but you gotta admit at least eight years ago--during the Timberland era--music was music and Christión had it goin' on.

5 out of 5 stars still working out the kinks.......2005-09-06

althought this is the worst cd to carrie the name of matt good it is still better than the rest of the crap of its time.

3 out of 5 stars Not Beautiful Midnight.......2005-02-09

Not a great CD, but if you're a big Matthew Good fan it's worth buying. If you're not a big fan of MG then stick to Beautiful Midnight and his solo work.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2004-11-21

Wow. This album is amazing. I really don't see why people are giving this album bad reveiws. I haven't heard much other music by Matthew Good (the only other songs that i've heard by him are Indestructable (which is a good song) and Alert Status Red (which is not))

I would recommend this album to anybody. Vermillion has a great bass riff that gives me shivers every time i listen to it, Symbolistic White Walls has this feeling to it that reeks of anger and impatiance. Native Son has a great intro to it and absolutely awsome refrain that has some of the best lyrics on the album, and it has some great keys parts during the post-refrain/pre-verse parts, and another great bass part during the bridge.

The only bad parts of the album are Every Name is My Name, which has good lyrics but lacks the music. It's more of a poem than a song. But, this song is still great compared to crap like good charlotte and simple plan. The other bad part is Alabama Motel Room, which is O.K. during the first listen, but gets boring, and i usually skip it when i'm listening to the album.

2 out of 5 stars What [junk]........2002-04-20

This is my favourite band in the whole world, so when I bought their debut album I thought it was going to be good. But it is terrible. Matthew Good hates this album, and with good reason. It is awful. The songs are mediocre; they put the album together fast, put very little money into it and it shows. Compared to their best album, "Beautiful Midnight", "LotGA" is awful. I give this album two stars, simply because it has one redeeming quality, "Omissions of the Omen." It is an excellent song, even though it isn`t mentioned in the track listing. It`s a hidden track that that comes after "The War Is Over" and it`s definitely worth waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great 1st Albumn.......2001-08-07

I would disagree with those who have rated the albumn a 2 or 3. Even at MGB's worst Last of the Ghetto Astronauts is far better than 80 percent of the music out there. As mentioned by everyone here Alabama Motel Room rocks, but Haven't Slept In Years and Symbolistic White Walls are both great songs that should be given a lot more credit than they have been. I have seen MGB in concert at least half a dozen times and in all they have played Symbolistic once at my first concert and it blew me away. I think that the songs on the albumn are great (even if they aren't as focused as those on Underdogs or Beautiful), and MGB should bring them back out of the wood work in a live albumn.
