30 years later, still playing the original vinyl..........2007-06-23
I was 14 that summer day when I made my weekly bicycle trip to our local record store (yes, imagine that: a locally owned record store) where "But Seriously Folks" was being piped through the shop. I immediately picked up a copy and am still enjoying this beautifully written and performed album by Joe Walsh almost 30 years later. It's unfortunate that the corporately-owned, big, conglomerate, commercial radio stations choose only to play "Life's Been Good". In this case, that's like having a prime rib dinner and choosing only to eat the baked potato. "Indian Summer" remains one of my favorites to this day as does this album among the hundreds of old 33's in my collection. Thanks so much for the music, Joe!
Come Amazon.......2007-06-08
It would be nice if Amazon would record a sample of the guy actually singing the song.
Joe proves he could do it again...and again, and again. 4 1/2.......2007-04-01
Production on this CD is phenomenal, musicianship is unreal. Joe is a true rocker and is very humorous, too. While he didn't take himself too seriously,he DID take the music and his talent seriously. Guitar lovers will totally dig on this one. The mixing and layering of instruments on this release is a case study of how to make rock records sound great. This is a must have CD,Folks!
A Very Good Album By Joe, But Speaking Seriously..........2007-03-18
Thus is a very good album indeed, well crafted, great compositions. But much to my surprise, reading all the comments related, most of the reviewers seemed very well aware of Joe's work with The Eagles, here and there a comment about his tenure with James Gang, his previous albums "The Smoker You Drink" and "So What" but..not a single word or comparison of "Seriously..." with his MASTERPIECE "Barnstorm" . That's why I gave this album 4 stars.
"BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." THIS IS A GOOD WELL MADE JOE WALSH ALBUM........2007-02-04
Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." by one of Rock's greatest personalities and a member of the legendary band, THE EAGLES. I give you MR. JOE WALSH. "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." was originally released in 1978 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the Elektra Records label in association with a Time Warner Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
JOE WALSH is no stranger to Rock n' Roll. Prior to joining THE EAGLES in the mid 1970's, Walsh played in a very popular band in the early 70's called THE JAMES GANG. If you have never heard the rock classics such as "Walk Away" or "Funk #49," you are definitely missing out. These songs are the real rock stuff that are made of legend. When Joe Walsh joined the famed legendary band THE EAGLES, he would contribute in changing THE EAGLES sound into a more Rock n' Roll sound. "Hotel California" and "Life In The Fast Lane" are true testaments of WALSH'S Rock n' Roll sound. Now WALSH would take a break from THE EAGLES and head into the recording studio and record a solo album that would pretty much sum up his career. JOE WALSH would evolve from the recording studio and hand Elektra Records his masterpiece album entitled "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." In my opinion, this is a very well made album which contains one of the greatest Rock anthems of the 1970's ever recorded. When you listen to this album, it sounds just like a typical EAGLES album. Coincidently, EAGLES members Don Henley, Glen Frey, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit do lend a helping hand in the recording of this album. Believe it or not, the credits in this album do mention the late great John Entwhistle of THE WHO.
I will list and briefly review certain song tracks that are of great importance and relevance to this album. I will list these song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Over And Over," (This is well made song. The music does sound a little humorious. I love the way Walsh plays certain guitar chords in this rocker. Walsh does know how to rock when he lets loose. I like Walsh's sliding guitar solo in this one.) (3.) "Indian Summer," (This is a beautiful Rockin' song. This song sounds so much like THE EAGLES. The music sounds so heavenly and refreshing. The harmonies sound incredible.) (4.) "At The Station," (This is another well made Walsh Rocker. This song has similar chords to the classic Walsh song "In The City." This song also sounds alot like a typical JAMES GANG song. This song truly Rocks.) (7.) "Theme From Boat Weirdos" (I love this song. This is another beautifully well made instrumental song. Walsh does let loose a little with his guitar playing. This is another song that truly Rocks.) and (8.) "Life's Been Good." (Ah yes, this is my most favorite song on the whole album. In my opinion, this song is the main centerpiece of the whole album. This song should be voted as one of the greatest rock anthems of the 1970's. This song sounds like an all out EAGLES rocker. The lyrics are so humorous that we can almost relate to it, at least I can. This is a true rocker that defines what great Rock n' Roll is all about.) Overall, this is one hell of a album worth seeking out.
I would like to highly advise everyone to purchase this album for their own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, JOE WALSH has managed to entertain us with his music and humor for many years. JOE WALSH has performed successfully on and off with THE JAMES GANG and THE EAGLES. Believe it or not, JOE WALSH did run as an independent for President Of The United States. As I am writing this review, THE EAGLES are in the process of releasing their first studio album in 25 years. This is great news for Rock n' Roll. I really do hope that THE EAGLES will stay together this time and grace us with more great albums in the near future. Rock n' Roll needs a great legendary band like THE EAGLES to keep Rock n' Roll breathing. So heres to you Joe, Don, Glen, Don F. and Timothy. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? GO EAGLES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02
Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?
If you are a violin lover, buy it.......2003-01-19
It's beautiful. Simply put.
This is "THE" Greatest Hits alum by Perlman.......2000-12-03
Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!
This is a relaxing, however, somewhat disjointed collection........1998-11-12
This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

Customer Reviews:
It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10
This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).
The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.
Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.
I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.
If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."
If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.
I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.
I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.
My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20
Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour
but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..
An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17
Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.
In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.
OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25
Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.
It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14
I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.
This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

Amazon.com essential recording
One of the more woefully underappreciated blues artists of the last three decades, Taj Mahal has consistently made great records that combine his extensive knowledge of roots music with a refreshingly non-elitist sensibility. Giant Step/De Ole Folks At Home from 1969 was Taj's commercial high point, and it's easy to understand why. The first half of the album (originally released as a two-record set) features Taj and band blending rock, pop and blues on songs like "Take a Giant Step," "Give Your Woman What She Wants" and "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." The second half is more laid-back and down-home, with Taj essaying solo renditions of "Fishing Blues," "Stagger Lee" and "Light Rain Blues" on banjo, harmonica and acoustic guitar. The most effortlessly enjoyable record of an effortlessly enjoyable career. --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
An American Classic...just wonderful!.......2006-06-14
Giant Step by Taj Mahal is an American Classic plain and simple. It is a wonderful cross section of delta blues sung as only Taj Mahal can. The folksy blues rhythyms in this CD take you to different place. Originally released on vinyl in 1969 this album has lost none of its charm.
The album opens with Ain't Gwine Whistle Dixie Anymore and just builds on that wonderful tune. My favorites are the gospel rich You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond, the countryish Six Days On The Road, the classic folk tune Candy Man, and finally the catchy child like Fishin Blues. Not a bad song in this collection.
Taj Mahal should be honored at the Kennedy Center. He is an American original. A wonderful, naturally gifted singer, and performer.
Finally, for a real treat catch Taj Mahal as Ike in the 1972 film classic Sounder. Buy this CD, you will not be disappointed.
Sitting on the porch with Taj.......2004-08-02
This is Taj Mahal at his best -- laid back, having fun, playing a combination of blues standards and his own stuff. A classic and a standout by an artist who has consistently made great music for decades.
A Great American Album.......2003-04-26
Taj at his best with a GREAT band , but -Jesse Ed Davis III- ,-alone-, is reason enough to need this cd. His perfect string bending solos and fills are backed up by his own keyboard work,(Taj himself makes -no- apparent instrumental contribution on tracks such as the classic re-working of 'Six Days On The Road'), the liner notes' calligraphy is by his hand, and the production bears a strong JEDIII sound, although uncredited . He manages to use modern effects,(for the time, such as guitar through a Leslie speaker), and still sound down-home all the while, and played impossibly difficult riffs with such grace, relaxation, and musicality that he could easily be taken for granted. Davis is a great forgotten American treasure,(perhaps best known for the fills and solos on Jackson Brown's 'Doctor My Eyes', {but even -that- was thirty years+ ago}, he was favorite of Eric Clapton and George Harrison).
A Unique Experience.......2002-02-18
If you've never heard him before, it's hard to describe Taj's music. He's usually labelled as a blues man - but his music is a mixture of all kinds of folk traditions - including american, african, and caribbean. I've seen him live several times - he's intelligent, articulate, warm, and has a great sense of humor. He plays a wide range of instruments - most often guitar or banjo. There is something truly special about him. His songs are usually playful and infectious - you just can't help tappin' your toes and humming along. He's recorded a number of great albums, but Giant Step has always been my favorite. The CD includes both albums in the original vinyl release, Giant Step and De Ole Folks At Home. On Giant Step, Taj is backed by a small group of electric blues musicians (featuring Jesse Ed Davis on lead guitar). On the more down-home De Ole Folks At Home, he plays solo, accompanying himself on guitar, banjo, and harmonica. My favorite song is "Take a Giant Step" - it's a tender look at rediscovering love. There's something about this song that captures Taj's essence - it's simple and direct and honest. Taj is a unique soul - his music always makes me feel good.
Landmark Recording.......2000-03-21
Taj has contributed a lot of great music over the years he's recorded music but I keep coming back to this one. A lot of critics have termed it a "blues" recording but it's really more than that. I see it as a very enduring document of American folk music...not Dylan...more like an audio history of rural southern America...the subjects he deals with are those dealt with daily in the rural south by the common man living there. There are a number of songs that work their way into your mind...simply irresistible tunes...you find yourself humming them at the oddest moments... If you only buy one Taj Mahal recording, make it this one.

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13
I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.
Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27
I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.
Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21
Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.
I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.
I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator
Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20
This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......
Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......
Here's to ya Hawks...........
One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09
This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
kiri kern.......2007-03-29
Kiri is sensational on this CD. Jerome Kern music is stupendous and the arrangements superb. Three top esses.
Kiri sing Kern is a great experience.......2004-01-18
I love the way she sings Kern's songs. Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.
On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.
Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01
Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.
The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."
If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.
White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20
I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.
mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30
Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Album Description
The best way to explain what this band sounds like is that they are a combination of REM, Hootie and the Blowfish and Dave Matthews with a smidgen of the Allman Bros. for good measure.
This band has a melodic foundation with a marvelous pop sensibility; they are intelligent, crafty, and very talented at every position in the band. Get ready folks, the south is gonna do it again. They have all the cardinal traits of greatness and I hope you as the listener are curious enough to check them out.

I normally don't listen to Rock, but this album draws you in. Every song is perfectly done and very smooth. If Dr. Dre did rock music, it would sound like this! This has become my favorite album by far.
title of review.......2005-05-26
These guys really are at the absolute top of the commercial radio pop-rock pile, as good as Collapsis, Athenaeum, and Transmatic. I don't know how these guys haven't got a major label deal, because they're totally better than 95% of major label rock, and every song on this album has hit written all over it.

I personally do not like Cardinal Trait or this type of music. They are just another cookie cutter band with nothing to make them stand out in an already flooded music world.

Customer Reviews:
Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03
This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.
If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.
You can have your own party just from listening to this music.
Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29
I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.
As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.
Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?
This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.
The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.
So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!
