Frantic is hardly an appropriate title choice for Bryan Ferry, who is the epitome of unflustered, cucumber-cool decorum. Frantic, his first album to feature original material since Mamouna, has been simmering away on the back burner for all of eight years. And it's all the tastier for it. The ingredients are just right: another song cowritten with former Roxy Music partner Brian Eno; tunes about models, movies, amour, and large houses; a guest appearance from Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood on "Hiroshima" (this is Ferry reclaiming his stolen clothes from the New Romantics' wardrobe); four fine new numbers co-penned in the 1990s with the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart; contributions from guitarists of the caliber of Chris Spedding and Mick Green; backing vocalists of the caliber of Lucy Laplansky and Alison Goldfrapp; a little bit of medieval; a little bit of Leadbelly; and a little bit of Dylan. Often the involvement of so many contributors results in too many cooks spoiling the broth, but not here. Compliments to the chef. This being a Bryan Ferry album, you can still play it at dinner parties, but the sensual ardor put into Frantic suggests Ferry had blood, sweat, and tears trickling down his tuxedo. Bryan's Back!.......2007-06-21

I was a bit worried that Mr. Ferry had lost his creative genius with the release of the tiresome covers album "As Time Goes By". I needn't have- he's back in full force with "Frantic". After kicking things off with a tasty version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", the original track "Cruel" is next and it rocks. There's a Native American motif in the melody that fits perfectly with the lyrics and is a little humorous whether or not it was intended to be. Following the somewhat rote cover of "Goin' Down" is a sexy, gorgeous ode to one of my favorite pop culture icons, Marilyn Monroe titled "Goddess of Love". Ferry's vocals on this disc are somewhat uneven though I don't mind that. Where his singing on "Goddess" and most of the other original efforts is relatively strong and clear, his age shows in most of the cover songs. But that works in his favor, lending them a subtle frailty and a vulnerable quality. "Nobody Loves Me" and "A Fool for Love" are wonderful songs that find our man wandering down a lane of self-pity. Here again there's some dark humor. The old classic "Goodnight Irene" is the only track on the album I don't particularly care for. It feels like a leftover from "As Time Goes By" and pales in comparison to the next final four songs. Perhaps Bryan intended this juxtaposition of past and present... "Hiroshima" is a stately rocker with great, odd backing vocals. "San Simeon" is kind of a sequel to Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" from "For Your Pleasure" as BF had written more lyrics to that song that weren't committed to the eventual recording. "San Simeon" has a nice melancholy edge to it which contrasts nicely with the following upbeat music and message of the cover "One Way Love". Saving one of the best for last, "I Thought" is another excellent track and is made more exciting for me with the collaboration of Ferry and Brian Eno not only writing together but singing as well! I never imagined I'd ever get to hear these two artistic giants sing together. They sound great and the song is subtle, thoughtful and closes the album with a hopeful feeling. More surprises like this one, please!

Ferry is fantastic...period........2006-12-04

I'm listening to this album again tonight after several years, and Oh My God, it's so good.. I've been a Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music fan since the first time I heard them in high school. Great singer, wonderful music, intricate and sometimes eerie arrangements and lyrics. Ferry and Roxy are one of the best bands in "rock" era history.

Bryan Ferry has to be one of my all time favorite singers. But how does an artist like him surpass such classic albums like "Mamouna" and "As Time Goes By"? Unfortunately, Mr. Ferry falls horribly short of doing so with his tepid follow-up album "Frantic." It's not a bad album, but it's definitely uninspired. So much of the album is taken up by weak cover songs (enough of the Bob Dylan already!) and forgettable melodies. "Goddess of Love" and "Hiroshima" are the most memorable songs, but it's not enough to save this album. It's also heartbreaking to hear how Ferry's voice has weakened with time. Well, maybe he can team up with Phil and Andy again and make another Roxy Music album. Here's to hoping!

Frantic: Not Really.......2005-09-03

Ferry's new album is a powerful composite of old songs and old players, new songs and new players. But age really isn't the primary issue even though all pictures on the CD are of a young Ferry. Love is still Ferry's bete noir and it has chased him (or he has chased it?) into middle age and beyond. However, Ferry still does sonic justice to his impulses and all the songs are exquisite. We get a delicious blend that's reminiscent of Roxy Music and early-to-mid 70s solo work, with contributions from some of the original musicians (Chris Spedding, Paul Thompson & Brian Eno). An added surprise is Mick Green's amazing guitar work, Dave Steward's song writing collaboration, plus some new textures from the guitarist of Radio Head. Unlike some previous Bryan Ferry albums, the vocals are up front, strong and still retain a youthful edge. Ferry can still pull out the stops and dig deep into his love smitten soul. Though Ferry cannot outrun time, this album is a testament to the lasting power of his talent to capture the sophisticated bitter/sweet urges and nuances of romantic love. And there is nothing frantic about that.

YES, Mr. Ferry gives us another brilliant piece of music! I got to know Roxy through Avalon, then worked backwards. So I bought Boys and Girls because I thought it was his first solo album, which was wrong, it was his first solo album AFTER Roxy Music. Anyways, by the time of Mamouna, I first listened, and thought oh, it is good, but it is more of the same since Avalon. Then after several months and spins, I came to just love it on its own. That brings us to Frantic. If you are a fan of his music, then you will love this! If you liked Roxy Music, especially their last few albums (Avalon, Manifesto, Flesh & Blood) then you should check out his solo albums--Boys & Girls, Bete Noire, Mamouna, and now Frantic, you'll love them! I always say, if you're not a fan, you should try one of those last Roxy albums, and if you like it, then go forward from there into the solo stuff.

The Frantics comedy troupe ruled over Canadian radio from 1981 to 1985 and did several tours. Frantic Times is a collection of their best sketches and songs reissued on CD for the first time. Frantic Times did wonders for my weight. After listening to this CD, I discovered that I had laughed my ass completely off! While this will most likely bring about other problems in the future, I am currently wearing pants that I normally would be unable to zip up. Thank you Frantics!

But seriously, this is some of the most clever and joyously wacky sketch comedy that I've heard. I recently checked out their website at it seems the group has reformed and is doing live shows every month in Canada. Awesome! There is also some cool information on Frantic TImes at deepshag.com.

Do yourself a favour and check this CD out - very funny!

Good Stuff.......2004-07-08

I got hooked on these guys from Dr. Demento in the 80's. This is the only one of their discs that I managed to pick up and I really enjoyed it... THEN MY GIRLFRIEND STOLE IT!

So now I'm waiting and waiting for Amazon to send me a new copy. When they say that it takes them 3-5 weeks to get something, they mean it!!

It's worth the wait. The Frantics have a blunt humor that hits you like a boot to the head.

Surprisingly good..........2007-04-07

I shudder every time I decide to do a review of a band on The End Records. They're notorious for housing acts that are bizarre enough and so far off into left field that most attempts at coherent and informative reviews turn into humiliating displays of self-deprecation. Fortunately, humility isn't lost on me.

Actually, The Sense Apparatus isn't too weird so much as it's a bit unsure of itself.

Firstly, I'm torn on the vocals. Kjetil Fosseid sings in several distinct styles - a screech reminiscent of typical black metal, a strikingly beautiful melodic croon, a sort of distorted yelling, and various instances of soft, menacing whispers, brooding narration, and dark intonations that are entirely believable. Of these, his melodic voice is by far the most impressive and most fitting for the kind of music on display... though he doesn't use it as often as I'd like. There are also guest vocals from Madder Mortem's Agnete Kirkevaag - she's good.

The production is very thick. The guitars feel quite weighty, as though the chords themselves have a sense of physical mass. The drums have a chunky sound that's a bit overbearing - every single drum hit and every cymbal crash is completely distinct and powerful in its own right. The bass mostly resigns itself to the background, but is quite deep and does a wonderful job of making the overall picture complete.

The playing itself doesn't fail to include technical spasms that encompass the usual tempo shifts and rhythmic variations, but these things are not the focal point of the album, nor are they the point of the album at all. Frantic Bleep do not want to be a "progressive metal" band. The music here is not about crafting elaborate arrangements; it is not about instrumental wizardry; it is not about complicated rhythmic structuring; it is not about going out of your way to screw with melody and harmony until only the nerdiest of music nerds in the universe will "understand" what the hell it is you're actually playing.

So what is it about?

Atmosphere. Every note, every melody, and every lead exists to craft an atmosphere of longing, sorrow, despair, and hope (have a listen to "Sins of Omission" - gorgeous). The shifts in dynamics from dark, brooding ambience to austere assaults of metallic rage serve to create bleak emotional storms; unwavering shining beacons in a desolate wasteland of inhumanity. In doing this, Frantic Bleep succeed admirably.

Let me just say that I love Prog Rock and Metal. Opeth and Porcupine Tree definately get the most 'spins' in my cd collection. Frantic Bleep, however, is about to take a giant leap to the front of the line. This music goes beyond progressive...it's simply brilliant. I can't wait for their next album, which according to their website is nearing completion. Better buy this now so you'll be up to date when the new one gets here!

the epitome of originality.......2007-03-02

This is one of the finest pieces of avant-garde metal/hardcore/whatever you will ever come across. With face melting riffs and splintering arpeggios starkly contrasting with gentle, acoustic progressive hooks, one will immediately think of Opeth.. but Opeth this is not. Frantic Bleep definately have a sound all to their own, and a dosage of talent to keep this album fresh and riveting even after multiple listens. You will even find tinges of electronica scattered throughout this masterpiece for good measure, but you will never find anything out of place, awkward, or askew.. which is a true gem in the world of the avant-garde.

Incredible musicianship, arrangements... SCARY!.......2006-05-29

The first thing that struck me about this is the melody. It's not just melodic, but it's TROUBLING-it really frightens you! I can see a whole storyline with this kind of music, and it's enough to make one perspire in an Arctic landscape...I am very uncomfortable when I hear this, but I always want to hear it in its entirety because of its power.
The music and musicianship is beyond exceptional. It's a bit progressive, but not in a math-rock way. This kind of stuff is incredibly hard to sing to but the vocalist manages well enough. There are some iffy parts, when there's some screechy grindy elements, but on the whole, the vocalist(s) don't go over the top, which would be so very easy to do with this kind of music.
So beautiful. Hire Frantic Bleep for your Armageddon party. If there's enough time... (if they're still around...and they probably aren't in this lame day and age..)

Unique, well done, and highly recommended.......2006-04-28

It seems that The End records, as a label, specializes in bands that are ridiculously hard to describe in a review. I mean you have Ulver, Agalloch, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Sculptured, Subterranean Masquerade, Age Of Silence, Peccatum, Sigh, and Winds. If I were forced to accurately describe any of those bands's music with words I would probably fail miserably. And now you can add Frantic Bleep to their extremely impressive lineup.

So where to start here? Well I guess I'll start with vocals: Kjetil Fosseid's vocal style brings to mind something of a post-black metal, feel as he alternates between black metal's throaty screachs, and then a variety of whispering/singing/crooning/distorted singing that brings to mind Garm's work with Arcturus. Throughout the course of the album he displays awesome vocal talent, and primarily sticks to his beautiful singing which is probably a good thing, as it suits their music best.

As for the instruments, they focus primarily on atmosphere. The guitars and bass have a very chunky sound that reminds me a bit of Meshuggah, although not quite as angular or melody-less, especially in places like the opening riff of "Curtainraiser". They also provide their fair share of complexity, rhythm shifts, and speed, so for those who are traumatized by simple instrumentation should fear not. The leads and keyboards are what truly add atmosphere as they sprinkle simple yet effective complements to Kjetil Fosseid's vocals, creating a bizzare and effective futuristic atmosphere that I think many bands in this style try to achieve but most fail (Winds and Age of Silence come painfully to mind).

Atmosphere is what this album is truly about. And Frantic Bleep do far more than just create and bathe in it here, they make beautiful use of it. In a style similar to Opeth, they create emotion with dramatic shifts from soft, atmospheric sections to heavy, technical sections. Personally I love bands that do it because it just sends chills down my spine. The album is somewhat comparable to Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse in its mood as well, somewhat doomy, but with moments of beauty and spiritual triumph included for dynamic effect.

I meandered a lot in this review, but it's a very hard album to describe... so just get it if you like progressive, atmospheric metal that is original without being overly weird. It is very well done and I can't wait to see where these Norweigeans will go with their follow-up.

Morricone's Most Modern & Elusive Soundtrack.......2005-10-20

For years this was one album from Morricone I had to have as an avid movie soundtrack collector! Luckily, I obtained my cd copy from eBay a year ago for a price extremely lower than what some sellers are trying to pawn it off for (can you say price gouging)!...It's only hard to find(out of print) because neither sales for either the film or soundtrack were "astounding". The only minor fault with the soundtrack is the repetitive main/central Frantic theme song for the opening and ending credits that plays throughout the cd in subtle variations.

However, while this Roman Polanski/Harrison Ford thriller flick came and went, back in 1987, the music itself from the film is something to behold.The Frantic soundtrack is exactly what it is;a dramatic soundtrack that captures the film's most tense moments as well as an atmosphere of suspense and mystery. There's only one slow and mellow jazz-like vocal track sung by Simply Red but the rest is all Ennio Morricone's artistry.My only quip is that it should have also contained other tracks featured in the film by artists such as Grace Jones and David Sanborn and a few others.Most of the soundtrack is built around the main Frantic theme complete with sweeping orchestral strings/violins/flugel horn as major musical components and classical musings with an electric bass guitar. The guitar should sound out of place but doesn't and only makes for a memorable movie theme. It's really the whole album's trademark sound.It's the guitar work that gives Frantic it's contemporary/modern edge.Where any other artist or composer would have botched the marriage of an electric bass guitar with an orchestral ensemble, Morricone's guitarist makes it all work flawlessly! It almost has that spaghetti western sound or feel much in the same vein as when Morricone also created the music for The Big, The Bad and the Ugly from the 60's starrring Clint Eastwood...Frantic serves as an updated or modern homage to his earlier work in those terms...In order to really enjoy this soundtrack fully you must first see the film to really feel it's memorable impact.The entire film is set against a Parisian/European backdrop(hence, why you will also hear an accordion instrument also strategically placed in certain portions of the soundtrack).Ahh, Paris !

The Frantic soundtrack definitely captures the mood, feel, and look of a Polanski film that unfortunately kinda went unnoticed by the public and critics. However, be cautious when purchasing this out of print soundtrack from various online sources. Prices range from clearance red tag costs to the extreme "one of a kind" mark ups !...

i have to say, i saw their live show, and it rocked my socks. so i bought the cd and i was very dissapointed. it definetly doesnt capture their live preformance. so id say, go see their show if you need a kick in a glass.

saw these guys the other day with someone called "extreme elvis". I must tell you, he was extreem. However, no one seems to be able to top the Librarians live. Not even the King himself, now in extreme form, can touch the raw energy these guys put out. I wish there were more bands like this and I hope they all stay slightly below the radar of the masses.

Backed up the hype.......2003-04-26

As catchy, rocking and simply impressive for a first album this is I can't give it a full five stars. But let's remeber this isn't olympic diving and a four is pretty darn good. I can say that this is one of the rare occasions where the reviews of the album were pretty dead on.

Better and better.......2003-04-23

Not only does this album get better with every listen, it actually gets better through the album. Thank You For Me is simply incredible! I once listened to this album for three hours in a row on a late night interstate drive. It kept me both awake and rocking!

A Good Single but Pricey. .......2005-10-13

If you have no access to downloading music and you want some great Metallica then by all means buy this album. It's got a great song and two great live tracks. But for 12 dollars which is the price of one album I'd want a lot more. I agree with the other reviewers in that we can only see so many versions of Blackened and Harvestor of Sorrow. I have a bunch of Metallica bootlegs that I got off the interent and almost all of them have these two tracks on it. I have almost no live tracks from St. Anger and it woulda been great to have some on this disc.

One For The Die-Hard Fan's Only........2003-11-07

Metallica have been sounding a little old and tired live lately. To me, they sound like they're just going through the motions, but in all honesty can you blame them? After selling a kagillion records and making ten bazillion dollars what else is left for them to do but churn out more tosh for the legions of diehard fans to shell out their hard-earned dollar on.

Blackened contains none of the fire and righteous anger from its halcyon days. Lars' drums that once pounded through the very gates of hell themselves now sound like an old organ grinder's monkey slamming on a cake tin. The vocals from the new boy Rob are weak and unispired and James himself forgets the lyrics in places. The mixing is poor and the production overall sounds like a mediocre fan recording. Fact is - I've heard better sounding bootlegs than this.

Harvester of sorrow? Come on guys, I mean how many more times are you gonna commit this to tape? Surely you could have given us something a little more interesting to listen to. How about a live version of Crash Course In Brain Surgery or Ride The Lightning or even (in keeping with the "...And Justice For All" theme) a ripping version of Shortest Straw?

The only redeeming factor to this CD is the enhanced video of the title track. The video is pretty good, your typical alcohol and sex fuelled drug binge ending with the obligatory car crash.
If not for this redeeming factor I would have been forced to give this CD the lowly rating of 1.

great B-SIDES.......2003-10-20

This captures Blackened live. Of course the song is weaker without the backing vocals of Newstead. However, the sound quality is excellent. I thought the version of Harvester was cool but there are a few mistakes in the song but hey we are not perfect and neither is metallica. All in all a worthy buy, but you might want to wait for the more expensive ep that always releases later with all the singles combined on one. I, however, could not wait to get a taste of the "new" Metallica. If you are collecting the live singles this is a great addition to your collection and if you are a die hard fan like I am this has been a long time in the making. Now if only they would put Fight Fire with Fire live as a B-side I could die happy. I HOPE THEY CONTINUE TO PUT OUT THEIR LIVE SONG B-SIDES AS METALLICA IS BETTER LIVE. The live songs are really cool!!!.......2003-10-07

This cd is really a must for true metallica fans!! The 2 live songs are really good! For myself, it's a gift to have Blackened in it's live form from the 2003 tour! Metallica is still a great live band and will be for I hope at least 15 or 20 years!
