ra the rugged man has been chewed up and crapped out by the record industry over the past decade and a half. i mean, rolling thru Jive threatening execs with a sawed-off and harrassing female employees didn't help but still, dude's got skills! what a triumphant first (released) album! the first 6 tracks are flawless. "lessons" was the single hottest jam of '05. for those like me that value raw rap over boom-bap beats, this is the joint for you! if you like watered down radio friendly hip-pop girly stuff probably not.

RA has been everywhere and done everything and is not afraid to tell you what a crazy time he had doing it and a great story about all of it. He first came out back in 1992 with a huge bidding war to get his music and then things went entirely to hell from there...

This is his DEBUT solo album, 13 years later. The tracklisting is probably a little more mellow than he would have done 5 years ago, but then again, 5 years ago he was pretty much as crazy as a person can be without being locked up...

The songs on this album are insane. The rhyme patterns that RA comes up with are so astonishing at times, it's really difficult to believe that he wasn't a superstar earlier in his career. Alas, his madness got him out of his record deal, onto the streets, and dealing with a very difficult home life...

This album is amazing. It's got amazing rhyming skill over very good beats. The only complaint I'd POSSIBLY have is the issue of versatility, but then again, RA doesn't try and be anyone that's changing the world, more than anything he just wants people to respect his talents and buy his album. He doesn't want fans to know who he is, he doesn't "want fans who don't know G Rap is" (and if you don't know the reference, you probably "don't deserve" to own this album anyways...)...

Well, If you DO know who G Rap is, and you DO appreciate a great rhyming artist at near his peak, then you SHOULD go buy this because it's very very good...

there'd been a buzz about the rugged man since the early/mid 90s,
but i didn't feel his whole s#!t 'til the TILL MY HEART STOPS verse
on the first soundbombing (97) compilation. he had another joint on there,
but till my heart stops w/8-off agallah was just diehard spittin'!
8-off's 1st verse was aiight, but ra just summed it up..
then the hook swept in, and it kept me hungry for more.

i got a hold of his 94 (non) release "night of the bloody apes"
as crustified dibbs.. and didn't really dig it too much,
mostly because of the production; and the so-called classic
C@#T RENNAISSANCE with biggie smalls was just ok.
ra had guest appearances and features on other albums
that were memorable, but DIE, RUGGED MAN, DIE is the one.

this album has the production that fits ra's style,
and i'm glad his crusty dibbs krazy syko inzane persona isn't here.
he's still clownin' but not as much. it's just ra in the flesh.
and at the risk of sounding wack, he's just keeping it real.

this is the ra the rugged man material i've been waiting for..
to me, this is the follow up to 'till my heart stops'.
i mean, eye know this is 2 years since this lp dropped,
and he still hasn't mapped as i'd like him, too..
but that's good (bittersweet, isn't it?) cuz he isn't overplayed.
imagine mos def or one of your underground idols getting spins
and g-unit-type rotations.. that might be sickening, no?
kanye west's jesus walks was great when it dropped,
but after months and months and months of hearing it everywhere, i had enough..
but i haven't had enuff of the rugged man.
this album keeps me satisfied for now.. it keeps me full,
and i'll be waiting patiently for the next serving.

When I first heard R.A. in the late 90's I liked him and never saw any album of his and came across this one day and I had to get it. A very good album, maybe 4.5 stars from self proclaimed dirty, broke, and grimey white guy. With 13 songs, guests are only on 2 (they're Wu-Tang related artists so they're good), you get a good deal of the Rugged Man. 2 almost classics, 3 ok songs, and the other 8 are tight. His lyricsa re tight, and stright dirty, gutter and grimey, like he says, he cares less about the money and fame just lyrics (he states the fact he loved a lot of the rappers in the 80's), but he has got some talent himself. Production is nice as well, from cats I mostly never heard of. N!gga Nilez does 4 songs, Ayatollah does 2, Koran the LTD, Cologero, Jocko, R.A, DJ Luciano, Dev One, and J Zone all do 1 song. A must have album for fans of true hip-hop.

I like the vibes that RA The Rugged Man has. A real grimey sound. Im feelin the production also. He has a pretty ILL voice at that so im feelin it, im feelin his lyrics. He aint all for that "fame" bullsh** so thats on a good tip and sh**. He doesnt give a fu** about all that MTV and BET sh**. Im feelin all the lyrics all the beats thats all I gotta say hands down. I recommend this album to ALL hiphop heads no doubt. This guy gots some good lines. Check it out no doubt.

I agree with both other reviewers re the duo coronet/organ arrangements on SOME of the bands of Disk #2 I have, but McCann plays them very well and the organ is fine if you like the organ (which I don't). BUT, the OTHER BANDS include orchestra and on ALL bands McCann really plays beautifully. However, I will not buy another disk of these because of the duo performance bands and - WHAT A SHAME as ALMOST ALL THE PIECES REALLY ARE AMONG WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL and MANY are very difficult, if not impossible, to find ANY arrangement of (though at least half on each cd readily avail other perfs arrangements).

Thought I was purchasing a nice compendium of beautiful songs to listen to on long trips. You'd better love the golden cornet if you buy this CD - or, rather, 5 CDs!

This CD set has all the greatest melodies... only they are performed by some guy and his "golden cornet" (a horn). There is accompaniment by an organ. This set WOULD have been great, IF it was performed by a piano. Huge disappointment. Would have been nice to know what instrument was used to begin with.
