5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")

Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-03-03

When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

Thank you, EMI.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

5 out of 5 stars An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26

Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

5 out of 5 stars There and Back Live!!!.......2007-01-02

This has to be one of the best sleeper Rock/Fusion albums to date. I saw this group perform the album live at the Philadelphia Spectrum on October 8th 1980...of the hundreds of concerts that I have seen, the There and Back performance which include an amazing performance from a 23 year old drumming sensation Simon Phillips has to be in my top 5 along with Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath in 1978...I highly recommend getting "There and Back" you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A More Modern Sound........2006-12-05

"There and Back" is an excellent disc. On this 1980 release, there is a more modern sound than on Beck's late 60's and 70's material, naturally... If you like soulful & expressive electric guitar compositions, then you would really enjoy this disc. We shouldn't overlook Beck's bandmates, as there are playing at a very high level of proficiency and artistic expression as well. Get "There and Back" you will be glad you did. I've always enjoyed this release!

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Beck.......2006-11-07

I've just discovered Jeff Beck's music and words are too small to size the experience of hearing it. So, enjoy it . . .

5 out of 5 stars SMOKIN'.......2006-07-12

All I have to say is that this is one of Jeff Beck's best albums. A must have for true fusion fans.

5 out of 5 stars There and Back and Back Again.......2006-02-14

This is an AMAZING CD!!!

I bought the album years ago, and getting the CD brings all the joy back again. Jeff's searing guitar licks cut through the heavy bass backing, and Simon Phillips on Drums wales and these have got to be some of the best tracks he's ever layed down!

You can not buy Star Cycle as a download anywhere, and I'm very glad I bought the whole CD as there is not a bad track on it!

I have been cranking it in my car, home and even in the shower as a big "Wake Me Up!" and the whole neighborhood in the morning!!

A must for any Jeff Beck Fan!!

You won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars I Went There and I'm Glad.......2007-03-04

Although it's their fourth studio album, this just happened to be the first one that I scooped up. I was prompted to buy this because of how much I loved the track "Maybe Tomorrow", which I had discovered on the Wicker Park soundtrack. I'm really glad that I bought it. Although it's not my favorite Stereophonics album, it is excellently produced and shows them going in some new directions, that lead up to some of the experimental sounds that can be heard on Language, Sex, Violence, Other? Along with "Maybe Tomorrow", Jones and crew have put out some cool tracks here. "Help Me" is a rocker that really pushes some of their rawness to the test. "You Stole My Money Honey" is great in the fact that the alt-country flavor is there along side Jones' screeching vocals. Then there is the orchestrated "Rainbows and Pots of Gold", which shows that they as a band are willing to try out something that they really haven't done to this extent with the use of unconventional rock instruments. I'd have to say that my favorite though would have to be "I'm Alright"(You Gotta Go There to Come Back)" due to the fact that this is their most exploratory sound yet to date. The lyrics are seductive also. Great tune and all in all, great album.

4 out of 5 stars what's all the negative reviews about? eh?.......2006-01-31

the stereophonics have always made good acoustic rock sounding sounds on previous albums they were filtered in here and there espically on J.E.E.P but this is there next album and i must say i don't agree with most of what the other reviewers on amazon are saying "so what is they've mellowed out" if it's good who cares? this is a fantastic stripped album with great melodies and hooks [jones's playing and singing are superb]
check out "getaway" "nothin' precious at all" too excellent tracks that are up to the standards you would expect from the phonics...
the singles they chose to release from this album were good choices
madame helga" being the rockin' head twistin' stadium rocker
maybe tomorrow being the morning chorus dawn song that draws you in
"since i told you it was over" being the song for the lighters ablaze
this album starts with a ear grabbing song "help me[she's out of her mind]
and doesn't stop till the previous song and single i mentioned
the stereophonics surely buttered their bread with this album
and what i hear from their new album they went back too the "performances and cocktails" days of hard edged rock

the stereophonics are a fantastic band and their not just a band that does songs that go up to eleven..kelly jones can write beautiful melodies and witful words that makes you think of a summers afternoon with a glass of wine in your hand relaxing
PEEEEERFECT

4 out of 5 stars I bought this album because I liked "Maybe Tommorow".......2006-01-16

and that stands as my favorite track on the album.

I very much enjoyed the whole "garage" feel to this album, and it's mellow energy... if that makes any sense. I think this album is best if you are relaxing and just looking for good entertaining music. I would buy another Stereophonics CD.

Reason I gave it a 4?

Because I want to leave room to give a better score for any future stereophonics albums.

5 out of 5 stars There's a reason "Maybe Tomorrow" has been on every sound track in the last year, it's that good!.......2005-11-18

This album is seriously amazing, especially the single "Maybe Tomorrow" which has to be one of the best driving-pensive-songs in recent history, yesterday it inspired me to just get in my car and drive, which I did, to Wisconsin. I just think they have something special, it's the perfect soundtrack song, and that's why it's on like 100 soundtracks! Great work from a great, prolific band.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Don't start here!.......2005-08-27

I Absolutely loved Cocktails, Word Gets Around, and JEEP...especially JEEP! I was so excited about this band and for this album I actually ordered The Import before even available in the US!

Unfortunately, this album never really bears fruit. The songs are all over the map...they range from just noise, to bad 80's power rock (e.g. High as the Ceiling)...to feeble attempts at soul (e.g. Miss You Now). What happened to the great (and incredibly witty) songwriting of the earlier albums!? It's like they said "let's do something different...for the sake of doing something different..."

I was so disappointed in this album...I've yet to check out LSVO!

Paul van Dyk spent most of the '90s perfecting a strain of credible, melodic Eurotrance that connected with clubbers all over the globe. Having honed his style and established a trademark sound, the East German DJ brings it all together on this, an album the overzealous are calling the first great dance record of the century. It begins in fine fashion with the cool breakbeat shimmer of "Vegas," swiftly followed by "Pikes," a valve-pumping Ibizan knees-up that's a tribute to the island's fabled hotel. So far, so good--this is topnotch progressive house that's guaranteed to make them move. However, if you're expecting more of the same, beware, because from here on in it's out with the Glo-Sticks and on with the face paint as a succession of clichéd trance anthems rudely gatecrash the party. From the lunar-landings vibe of "Avenue" through to the sweet pop lilt of "Face to Face," hypnotic riffs, sanguine chords, and hollow metronome beats take center stage. Van Dyk's no ATB, but ultimately this is just as one-dimensional. --Paul Tierney

i didnt even buy this cd just heard snips of it at random and it sounded good this is an old cd and still cutting edge thats why paul is number 1 right now. some of the other masters i.e. sasha, armin van buuren, tiesto, started with proper music format and then just jumped to a whole new mature so called sound. i mean is it a mid life crisis i dont know but if you spin new music format in front of me you better be ready for my criticism because it aint gonna be good. if the beats are off, sound rotation off, sound structure off, bass off, treble off, pitch off, i or any so called professional musician will raise are hands and say hey what they hell is going on you guys played perfect now you play like shrek 2 all of these so called masters cds can be shelved with the shrek 2 music anthology its that bad. the most terrible sound ever created by it or what or who would have to be attributed to the shrek 2 sound track, i still have sound nightmares from that cheese whiz oozing from the crazy minoet or sonata blarred from those god dam creatures. those so called masters are beginning to sound like the shrek 2 musical dynasty and im not the only musician sitting back and laughing maybe im wrong and i need a hearing aid but if it sounds funky its gotta be funky but dam thats like a terrible sound but if the masses want to hear the new shrek sound format than so be it but i will cover my ears

Ladies and Gents, read the Amazon review of this CD, by one Paul Tierney, and weep for the guy, he's just a talentless hack. First of all, Van Dyk unlike everybody else in this genre, is not just a mixer, he is also a composer (I know Van Buuren and Tiesto have written their own stuff, but it is, shall we say, less than impressive stuff). Van Dyk's material is first rate (check out "Spellbound" on his later Reflections CD for another superb example of his composing ability). Second of all, this is one of the most fabulous mixes, the tracks fit brilliantly together, and it is all his own creations. Third, so far as the "same old stuff" charge by Tierney goes, just check out the last track, technically it is "We Are Alive," one of van Dyk's best known ORIGINAL compositions. Van Dyk has basically "inverted" the song, bringing forward stuff kept in the background in the original, stripping it down to a stylized few musical pulses---basically he takes his star tune and creates a new track out of it. Hardly hackneyed. The title composition also makes for an outstanding, irresistible peak song in the mix. There is nothing else like this track "out there" or "back." Really, I would love to know what Mr. Tierney thinks is original.

In Mr. Tierney's defense, many of the tracks on this CD were floating about in the community before the album came out. But that doesn't make CD1 any less impressive; indeed, the reverse is so. Van Dyk does use some of the same sound effects here as in some of his other works, and it would be better if he hadn't, but that is small change compared to the achievement of this CD.

CD 1 is the big draw, described above. CD 2 starts with a little trio of great tracks, then veers into some moderate remixes of older van Dyk hits. There is less mixing, but solid music. The highlight on CD 2 is "Tell Me Why (Club Mix)".

This is a must-own CD for anyone interested in House/Trance. It was the first mix I ever listened to (the second was Armin van Buuren's "004", which like "Out There and Back," features a fabulous mix on CD1, and solid backup stuff [mostly mixes of late 90s classic trance tracks] on CD 2). Those two have set quite a bar for later listens to meet, really only Digweed's Fabric 20 has come up to that level, with perhaps van Buuren's State of Trance '05 CD1, and some of the Hotel Costes stuff, coming close (such as, in the Costes series, the excellent Saks CD).

Hey Mr. Tierney, why don't you switch over to "reviewing" country music or Pee Wee Herman's greatest hits, where you belong?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-20

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03

The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02

Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.

She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.

She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.

Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.

"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.

Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.

She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.

    Grade= A

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27

Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars ....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18

I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10

... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

5 out of 5 stars "Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-22

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

    5 out of 5 stars uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars scadalise my name.......2004-10-29

this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
