1 out of 5 stars Offensive Content and Language.......2007-06-05

I love swing revival music, but my exposure to various groups has been limited. I bought this as a "buy it together" with another CD, listened to four songs, and turned it off. I won't listen to it again. The themes of the songs are sex-charged and the language vulgar. I guess I should have known by the title, "Cherry Poppin' Daddies," but I was thinking more along the lines "poppin' = jivin'" rather than it having a sexual connotation. Shows how out of the loop I am, I guess. Some people would probably love this CD, but as a Christian, I'm offended by the themes and the language. There was a low-class knock on God, too, and that was the end of the CD for me.

5 out of 5 stars Zoot Suit Riot.......2007-05-21

I postively love this cd. It so entertaining to listen to and if you are into swing dancing this is the music for you. The quality is like having Cherry Poppin Daddies right there with you performing it, it's that good. Zoot Suit Riot is a very up beat and fun cd for everyone to enjoy .

5 out of 5 stars Brought Swing to the 90s.......2007-03-12

The song Zoot Suit Riot brought Swing back to mainstream in the mid-90s, with it's ubiquitous radio airtime, that in turn spawned swing clubs across the country. That said, this album has a lot more to be said for it. Ding-Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line, Here Comes the Snake, Drunk Daddy, Brown Derby Jump and Shake your Moneymaker are all now mainstream Swing songs. Indeed, looking at this album, it has so many great songs it reads like a Greatest Hits album. Essential for any swing CD collection for both it's impact to the genre, as well as the quality of the music.

5 out of 5 stars zoot suit riot.......2006-11-03

I was introduced to this band by a friend, and have loved them eversince. This is the first album i heard of theirs and i must admit that it's one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars lacking a little.......2006-08-12

Overall, this is a good album and has a number of cool songs on it, which is why I rated it 4/5. "Drunk Daddy" is one of my favorites. =D

But, it was lacking a little. "Mister White Keys", "When I Change Your Mind", and "Come Back to Me" were't the greatest tracks I've heard. I didn't care for them.

It could have also been a little longer. I would have liked to have seen "Irish Whiskey", "Suicide Kings", and "We'll Always Have Paris" on there. =)

To me, it just doesn't qualify as a Greatest Hits album for this. It's good, but not for a Greatest Hits album.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07

I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.

I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...

4 out of 5 stars good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24

This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD

2 out of 5 stars Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29

It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.

The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.

When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.

5 out of 5 stars Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02

Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.

4 out of 5 stars Larry's warm, endearing voice conveys unabashed sincerity & classic country soul.......2007-05-02

Playing Time - 38:59 -- Unabashed sincerity has always been the hallmark of Larry Sparks' soulful and bluesy singing . Maybe it's an approach that he learned from his early days with Ralph Stanley in the sixties. Sparks was born in 1947, raised on a farm in Ohio, recorded his first record at age five, and formed his own band in 1969. Always possessing a strong affinity for Hank Williams' music and style, this album actually emphasizes Larry's voice wrapped around contemporary material with a more classic country sound. There are also some strong bluegrass and gospel offerings, but the majority of the set has Larry visualizing lonesome classic country situations and singing about them with the same kind of feeling that helped him win IBMA's Male Vocalist of the Year awards in 2004 and 2005. It's nice to see all the lyrics included in the CD's jacket.

Perhaps it was an intended stylistic approach by Larry and album co-producer Don Rigsby, but I felt that some of the instrumental breaks were conservative and vocal harmonies understated. It's also possible that Larry's debut on the McCoury Music label is part of a strategic plan to cross-market his music to a wider audience. Piano legend Hargus "Pig" Robbins appears in the mix of three numbers (The Last Suit You Wear, Hand in Hand, For Your Love). Others on the album include Del McCoury, J. D. Crowe, Don Rigsby, Larry D. Sparks (Larry's son), Jackie Kincaid, Josh McMurray, Ron Stewart, Randy Kohrs and Stuart Duncan. It's an interesting mix of his current Lonesome Ramblers bandmates with friends and session musicians. Larry's own instrumental "Larro" shows how he uses his 1953 Martin D-28 to provide an expressive voice of its own.

Featured songwriters include Connie Leigh (Casualty of War, Lazarus and the Rich Man), Mark Brinkman (The Old Coal Mine), Tim Stafford, Larry Cordle & Bobby Starnes (Follow the Star), and Larry Shell, Larry Williams & Kim Williams (The Last Suit You Wear). In a solo vocal arrangement, Larry Sparks sings about being as "simple as the whippoorwill" in Marshal Warwick's "I'm Country and Nothing More." Truth is, we know that he's much more based on his large volume of work over the decades. While not quite up to the same exceptional standard of some of Larry's other releases (and award-winning "40" album), "The Last Suit You Wear" will certainly be of particular interest to those who want to hear his warm and endearing voice capture the simplicity of acoustic country sounds with a classic bent. Lynne's follow-up to 2003's Identity Crisis works the same sparse, moody territory, but if the title of the former spoke to her self-esteem at the time, Suit Yourself shows her being more confident in every way. Again acting as her own producer, Lynne took the demo tapes she made in her California home studio to Nashville, where she augmented her first-take vocals with guitar (the Wallflowers' Michael Ward), keyboards (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench), bass, drums, pedal steel, Dobro, and mandolin, employing those instruments merely as brush strokes on a wide-open canvas of voice and emotion. Throughout, Lynne strives to make the project so relaxed that a listener feels as if he's sitting cross-legged in the room--the first track begins with studio chatter, and elsewhere you can hear ice cubes clinking in a glass and the sound of someone pushing the stop button on a tape recorder. For those who prefer a more polished production, this fly-on-the-wall approach may be disconcerting, especially as the occasional track seems unfinished or a bit too rough, with an out-of-tune guitar or a rhythmic disconnect between singer and players. But ultimately, the album satisfies with the honesty and strength of the material, which ranges from Lynne's killer cover of guest Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia" (here titled simply "Track 12") to the smoky groove of "I Cry Everyday," the wistful ballad "Old Time's Sake," and the Waylon Jennings-like "Iced Tea." Speaking of outlaws, "Johnny Met June," one of the most memorable tracks, details the Cashes' "meeting" on the far banks of the Jordan. Lynne wrote it the day Johnny died. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shelby Lynne - an authentic voice.......2007-06-01

Here's what happened: I typed in Tony Joe White on Youtube and video links I got included Shelby Lynne - a singer I'd never heard of. The video clip of I Won't Die Alone was shot by someone at what appeared to be a record company event. What immediately struck me was Shelby Lynne's stripped down emotional authenticity. That and a fine composition, vocals that spoke of experience, and mean musicianship

So, onto Amazon to order her latest album, Suit Yourself, from which the track on the video was taken. Two weeks wait for the mail to arrive is as instant the gratification gets when you live at the bottom of Africa - but it was worth the wait. As with any album, there are the stand-out tracks but none that you would prefer not to be part of the selection at all. The ditty, Me, Myself and I, is album-filler kind of material though it probably has some specific significance to Shelby herself - but let's talk about the tracks that keep me playing this album over and over...

Where Am I Now, I Cry Every Day, I Won't Die Alone, Sleep - each of these are songs of experience that convey the emotional authenticity already referred to. Shelby Lynne adds her unique melodic touch to a folk-style approach that is tinged with country and some amazing pedal steel guitar, though I Cry Every Day has an R&B feel that many artists in that field could take lessons from in terms of musical economy. That same economy applies to the hard rocking opening track, Go With It.

Then there's Track 12. And this is where we get back to Tony Joe White. It's Shelby's version of A Rainy Night In Georgia and she inhabits the lyrics in a way that draws one deeper into the meaning of the song than before, with Tony Joe himself on lead guitar taking us even further into the world that he conveyed so many years ago.

What's terrific about the album is its sense of intimacy. This is like sitting at the kitchen table with Shelby as she shares her songs and her feelings, though that means no compromise on production standards and the feeling that this is a privilege.

5 out of 5 stars One of America's greatest voices!.......2006-12-08

Lord, can this woman sing! Been in love with her voice since the earlier days. No real comments on this cd expect that it's great and a little different like most of hers are.

5 out of 5 stars A Deserved Review Done One Year Late.......2006-06-27

I've wondered why I have taken so long to write this review, and I think I have two legitimate reasons. First of all, when this album came out I honestly wasn't aware that you were permitted to review an album on Amazon, and secondly, I think I'm writing this because of my disappointment with Shelby's sister, Allison Moorer's latest release. Allison is a whole lot better than her new one shows, but that's for another time. We're here to talk about Shelby Lynne.

One of the earlier reviewers of this album asked in so many words,"Why hasn't someone told me about Shelby Lynne before this?" Well, I'm going to tell you why, at least in my opinion.Way back in 1989, Willie Nelson was making an appearance on one of the early morning talk shows, and there was a young girl with long brown hair sitting beside him on a stool, as Willie was. The interviewer was talking to Willie about his new album, and then proceeded to ask Willie who the beautiful young lady was sitting next to him. Willie said, "Well, this is Shelby Lynne, who has done a few songs with me, and I think has one of the best voices I'v heard come out of Nashville in quite a while. And she's going to sing one with me right now. They then sang one of my old favorites, "I Love You So Much It Hurts". To say the least Shelby blew me away. I went out and searched and searched for her album, and finally found it. It's called"Sunrise", and in some circles is very hard to find. Now, at this point of her career, Shelby Lynne was considered a "country" singer. And, that's what she was. You almost won't even recognize her on the cover of her first album. I'm serious.

What we weren't ready at that time for was all the changes that Shelby would go through in the next 17 years. regardless of what you've heard, please keep in mind that here's a young girl who had gone through probably the most devastating experience any young child could go through without just giving up on life itself. I'd prefer not to talk about it. If you don't know what I'm referring to I'll let you look into Shelby and Allison's past for yourself. It's that bad.

To try to express the talent that this young lady has I'm going to mention each and every title of all of her albums. Id like to do that, because I think that after you give a listen to "Suit Yourself", you're going to want more. And, please listen to "Suit Yourself" at least three or four times with an open mind before you really make up your mind. You're going to hear a voice that is so pure, raw, and real that you're going to say to yourself what the other young lady reviewer said. "Why hasn't anyone told me about Shelby Lynne before?" Being a fan for 17 yeaqrs, I'm going to tell why I think you don't know her. Shelby not only wants it that way, she likes it. She may come off as a little wild on the surface, but underneath is a very caring, quiet, private person, with one heck of a set of pipes. This girl can sing anything, and I mean anything. Starting with "Sunrise", you then have "Tough All Over, "Soft Talk", "Temptation"(a lot of torch type songs - getting a little away from the country roots), "Restless", "Love, Shelby(getting alittle into the rock vein), then the big change, "I Am Shelby Lynne". I'm going to stop here for a minute, because this album came out in 2000, and I'm hearing that Shelby has been nominated for a Grammy for best new artist! I'm saying what in the world are they talking about! She's been around for awile. Then, I find out that the Grammy people have nominated her in the best new Rock singer catagory. And, to top it all off, she wins! It turns out to be a great rock album. I'm shocked, but I say to myself, "Well, heck, it's a whole lot better than most of today's rock that I'm hearing!". Then comes her next two albums, "Identity Crisis"(why was I surprised by the title?), and the one I'm supposed to be reviewing, "Suit Yourself".

What I intended to say about this album has been said in a lot of different ways by the reviewers before me. I agree with almost all of the superlatives that everyone else bestowed on this artist. When you listen to this album, you're basically hearing it as it was being made. Personally, I love when an artist does that. They have the guts and confidence in the4ir ability to throw it out there at you, and if you like it, you do, and , if you don't, weel you don't. And, that's pretty much Shelby Lynne. What you hear is what you get. You're not going to get alot of backup singers that are there to simply attempt to coverup the lead singer's lack of talent that you get so much of in today's music, if you want to call it that. If you see Shelby, you're not going to have a gang of dancers behind her to distract from the talent that's not there. Because, believe me, with Shelby, the talent is there. If this girl wanted to be at the top of the charts, she'd be there. She doesn't care at all about that. She cares about ner fans and respects the integrity of what she does.

Lastly, I will tell you what tunes I think really stand out on "Suit Yourself". Actually the whole album is great, but in paricular, please listen to "Where Am I Now", I Cry Everyday", Old Times Sake", "I Won't Die Alone", Johnny Met Jane, "You Don't Have A Heart", "Iced Tea", and "Track 12"(which is actually Shelby's rendition of "Rainy Night In Georgia".

I've said a whole lot to bore you to death, but really, do yourself a favor. Give this girl a listen. She is one of the very best out there today. If you're waiting for her picture to be on the cover of the "Rolling Stone", you're going to be wasting alot of time. Thanks for your time, and sit back and enjoy!

How come nobody's told me about her before? This is a dynamic album! Every song - is - great. I can't wait to get to know the rest of her material. You can not go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars a rough but beautiful diamond .......2006-02-21

Shelby's DIY approach is quite refreshing in these days of slick production, and to hear her voice is always a revelation. The elegy to The Man in Black and his saving grace, June, is a song all should hear--the lyrics and soul of Shelby's voice could make a cynic believe that there just may be love in this universe.....

One of a handful of pop groups in the latter half of the 1990s to exploit the renewed interest in American roots (swing, big band, soul) music, this Eugene, Oregon ensemble scored big with a neat modern update of the old school. Purists take note: Cherry Poppin' Daddies built a following by touring with third-wave ska outfits like Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish, prompting main Daddy Steve Perry to wryly call his group "third-wave swing." But post-Swingers dance fanatics (rockabilly retro-cats, modern-day sockhoppers, and Royal Crown Revue boosters) don't sweat the particulars. Charged horn arrangements, bouncy rhythms, and saucy verve effectively recall masters like Basie, Cab, and Ol' Blue Eyes while injecting an unmistakable post-punk ethic. --Mark Woodlief

now look, from beginning to end, these guys did a heck of a job in bringing "swing jazz music" to life (the godfather rythom to allmost any music that ever made it mainstream in america).... yes, there are some lyrics on this album that has profanity... but SO FREAKIN WHAT!!! as far as i'm concerned about that aspect is, with all of the stuff that is popular now a days and what they talk about, this does'nt even come close to being vulgar like many of that STUFF!!! weather it be rock, rap, r&b, country, etc... so if you have an open mind and heart to what "music" was like before what's so popular now a days, then believe me, you won't go wrong with this album....

2 out of 5 stars One hit wonders? .......2007-02-16

Not really all that good. And, the language used could be better. Not a keeper... Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Nutso wacko swing...with a vengeance.......2007-01-16

This is not your father's swing band....whoa--not by a long shot! These guys don't hesitate to throw four letter words into their lyrics and combined with hot swing drumming, razzy brass and often snide vocals, you got yourself one heck of a different swing sound.

The sense of humor can be outrageous here--listen to "When I Change Your Mind" and tell me you ain't laughin' by the time the song reaches its wacky end. A number of reviewers pooh-pooh the musicianship on display here--one of 'em even said the entire album was "horrendous"--but ya gotta look past this kind of review and see what CPD is really doing--which is make fun of people looking for traditional swing in a new band and at the same time to shout out what swing was (and is) really all about--SEX. The word "jazz" itself was originally a verb that meant to engage in sex with someone (now replaced by the most infamous four letter word on the planet) and Cherry Poppin' Daddies know this (naturally, you can tell that even by the name of the band).

This is a lot of fun for those with a sharp edgy sense of humor. It's a novelty item, no question, but there's no way you're ever gonna find another new swing band that does what these guys do. This kind of like listening to a band made up of nothing but Jokers (i.e., the Joker from Batman)--you can actually HEAR the wicked cackles in their music with just about every tune.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Red Hot Swing ,Smokin' Horns,.......2006-09-23

This CD has been a fave for me over the last 8 years or so...I keep comin' back to it for an adreneline boost, literally. I've also got cds from BBVD,RCR,Squirrel Nut Zippers etc.,but for my money this is the real deal. There's not one bad track and several outstanding ones...my faves include Ding Dong Daddy(breathtaking opening)Mister White Keys,Master and Slave,Dr. Bones,Come Back To Me,Drunk Daddy(disturbing images, but killer track all the same)and Shake Your Lovemaker.I admire Steve Perry for his skill with lyrics .While at times dark and nasty ,it is honest, full of imagery and downright fun for the most part.He is not blessed with much range in his voice , but uses what he has well. The music ,especially the horn arrangements literally jumps out of the speakers .Go ahead ,Try and keep still.Hopefully,we'll hear more ,even though swing has gone below the radar again, the music is too damned good to completely disappear.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-12

David Bromberg at his best! I listened to these in the late seventies/early eighties and recently bought the CD's. What a pleasure to listen to them again. Bromberg is by far on of my top 5 favorite artist. Glad he is back.

5 out of 5 stars Almost an Old Classic.......2005-05-21

Well, I was looking to replace my vinyl copy of Reckless Abandon, and found this instead. I could kick myself in the arse for lending it out. Now I won't have a copy of "Beware, Brother, Beware" OR Stagger Lee. Damn. So, my review is thus: best muscianship you'll ever hear, delivered in a fun, funky and accessable style. Sort of like blues, bluegrass, Irish, rock n roll- all intermingled. Sigh....

4 out of 5 stars Master of Versatility.......2003-04-19

You may listen to this album and find it hard to believe its all one band. How can one group of musicians _possibly_ produce dixieland, bluegrass, electric blues, Irish music, country, Delta blues, jazz, several flavors of rock, and God knows what else, and sound credible at all of them?

I don't know...all I know is that listening to this band is an incredible experience and an endless joy. The songs are good, the musicianship is incredible, and there is a feeling of fun, of feeling good, that suffuses everything they do.

I bought this CD after having "Reckless Abandon" on vinyl. Getting to know the other album, and it's a treat. One casualty of the jump to CD....the original cover of "Reckless Abandon" by B. Kliban was wonderful in itself. Its what led me to buy the vinyl album in the first place!

I only regret that I missed the chance to see this band live. I understand that Bromberg has retired from performing and recording. A great loss...must have been God's own bar band. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Missing "Beware" but still worth 5 stars.......2002-08-18

Like another reviewer I was hugely dissapointed that "Beware, Brother, Beware" , which was originally on "Reckless Abandon" is not included in the cd. I too am at a loss as to why. It is one of his funkiest and funniest songs. That said, this combination of what were 2 albums by the David Bromberg Band still gets 5 stars for the many other variously energetic and poignantly beautiful songs.
I do hope that "Beware, Brother, Beware" will see cd light of day.

5 out of 5 stars Beware, Brother Beware.......2001-08-15

I love it, BUT: it is missing "Beware, Brother Beware", a favorite of mine. I wonder why. However, I am very happy to have these classic, excellent Bromberg albums on CD. The sound quality is great (a pleasant improvement over the cassette tape made from my vinyl). I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Since the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--an ever-changing group of hardcore 78-collecting friends--have been playing what they love--old-time jazz, folk, string-band, Hawaiian, and ragtime music. Best known for having two of the best comix artists ever in their lineup--Robert Armstrong and R. Crumb--the Cheap Suits aren't slouches in the instrument-proficiency department (Armstrong's musical saw ended up on the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest soundtrack, and occasional bandmate Bob Brozman has made an entire career out of touring and playing music). On Chasin' Rainbows, some of the group's finest moments are captured. Classic songs like "Persian Rug" and the title track are played alongside CSS originals like "Fine Artiste Blues." You'll never hear these fun tunes (usually relegated to CD compilations of 78s) played in a higher fidelity, nor will you probably hear them this spirited. A great resurrection of lost music by a group of guys dedicated to the stuff. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just terrific........2007-01-30

Although I do love this album, I have one question. Recently, I found an untitled album of R. Crumb's in my iTunes library. I have absolutely no idea what it is. There are 19 tracks and the first one is 3 minutes and 24 seconds long. If anyone can help me out in trying to figure this out, I'd really appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and funky.......2006-11-10

This is another great CD from Mr. Crumb et al. I am so thankful that people are still playing this music at all, let alone with the style and grace these guys have. You'll laugh and you'll marvel at the musicianship, and the vocals go perfectly with it. Their next one was even better with the addition of genius Bob Brozman. Get both!

4 out of 5 stars Even more incredible than the last one!!.......2005-08-31

R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD is a reissue of their second album, originally titled "Number Two". The four band members are clearly having fun here, without taking themselves too seriously. They are playing the kind of music they like, and having a blast doing it. While they aren't really professional musicians, what they lack in technical ability, they make up for in enthusiasm. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to get the toe to tappin'........2002-02-07

I'm a big fan of indie-rock and avante-garde jazz, but I can't deny a serious affinity for good down-home music like this. This band of misfits, dorks and comic-book geeks has got the right idea when it comes to playin' some 'toons (pun intended). The atmosphere of this music is silly, goofy, slightly perverse and deeply sincere. If you liked the music from "Oh Brother where art thou", but thought the movie was inauthentic and a bit shallow, you should give this a listen. This is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars IT WAS ABOUT TIME!.......2001-09-01

Finally, some REAL music. It had been a long time since I had heard such sincere and rustic musical farcities. Although Robert Crumb is "way out there", his handling of his short stab at the music game proves that if you have a dream, you can"t be all bad. Nice cello parts from Terry Zwigoff. "Persian Rug" has got to be one of the best of the best. Buy it, you'll like it!

The biggest (and only relevant) member of the St. Lunatics crew fully indulges his rap-meets-R&B fixations on the enjoyable (if predictable) Suit. Whereas companion CD Sweat is geared toward the male thugs in the clubs, this one's for the thugettes. More lyrically compelling than Sweat, Suit shows a softer, more cerebral, less flashy side to St. Louis's favorite son. Check out "Die for You," Nelly's ode to youth, and the calypso-tinged, introspective "In My Life," which reveals a more worldly rap duke underneath the band aids and chunky jewelry. Nelly's unique "singjay" flows tend to take a backseat to the beautiful harmonies of guests such as Jahiem, who sounds like a modern-day Teddy Pendergrass on "My Place," and Anthony Hamilton, whose spot on "Nobody Knows" reminds us why he's the most underrated of the contemporary soul balladeers. When Nelly said he was going to introduce his Midwest style to a wider audience, he wasn't kidding: even country star Tim McGraw joins the fray on "Over and Over." --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Warrior Lioness.......2007-07-15

As far as I am concerned, I enjoyed the albulm.Nelly was really never interested in gangsta rap which is what some of you brothas were stating and correlating him to that. Anyway I like this albulm because it has shown his growth and maturity, as well as entrance to the next level in life. He has chosen some deep soulful brothas to collaborate with such as Anthony Hamilton and Jahiem. I think that Sweat is good but I like most others prefer this albulm. It shows that he has substance as well as being able to intermingle with mainstream minds.PEACE

This is a sorry excuse for an album.
I heard recently Nelly was fueding with Eminem.
Eminem is a king Nelly is a crack head
Nelly pussied out and squashed the beef he knew damn well Eminem would ruin his carrer (or what's left of it)
And to that Tash A Megget person who gave this a 5 stars.
I don't know weather to laugh at that or throw up.

1 out of 5 stars Can anyone save the rap game?.......2006-08-04

I was recently over a friends house - when I suddenly heard a bunch of dogs barking out back. Me and my friend went outside to see what the commotion was all about - suddenly I felt their pain and began to hollar amomg the feeble animals. As I listened to Nelly's Sweat album from the car of some confused teenagers realized that my beloved rap was just a thing of the past - along with disco music (which is not that bad compared to the garbage that is out now). Now I realized why I never fully gave my heart to the so called "rap game" even when their were some top quality MC's that actually had something to say (Rakim,Public Enemy,De La Soul,Leaders Of The New School,Jungle Brothers, ect.) And this is the reason I'm a avid fan of classic soul, funk, jazz, and rock (not the heavy metal or punk type), and this is the reason those guys's are spoken of as legends as opposed to 95 percent of those "gone by tomorrow stars" of hip-hop. This clown Nelly is consistently excellent in putting out consistent trash. But what I and many other's don't understand is how he's sold so many albums, and I don't kow anybody that owns anything fom this [...] This guy is not an artist he's an con-artist for this trash to the masses of kids and adults a like. I didn't continue to put my ears through the that kind of torture - so from what I heard lame beats, lyrics, song content, ect, ect, ect. This and his other contemporaries such as St. Lunatics(wack),Lil John(awful),Ying Yang Twins(horrendous), and others - it's to many to go down the line (all day affair) LOL! How many times are these record companies going to promote this absurdity. It's like anyone can be a rapper these days - no let me rephrase that - ANYONE can be a rapper these days. This along with his Suit album is the reason hip-hop is losing many fans and are exploring different genres and elements of music. I was born in 1973(a year before Nelly)so i feel privelidge growing up knowing about all different kinds of music. And I feel sorry for these kids today because to many of them - this is all they know. That's why it is up to parents such as myself to educate and help steer the youth in the right direction, because as of right now we as people have been doing a dismal job. Kids look up to these rappers for inspiration the way my generation looked up to Stevie Wonder,Marvin Gaye,Temptations,Smokey Robinson, and Aretha Franklin. And even though many of our heroes had troubled personal lives - they never preached such negative and derogatory music. To sum it up avoid this album like the plague and pick up something with more meaning such as, Marvin Gaye(the greatest),Stevie Wonder,(legend),Dramatics,Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes,Eagles,Steely Dan,Doobie Brothers,Three Dog Night,Gil Scott Heron,Bob Dylan,Michael Jackson,Al Green,Bread,Genesis,Aerosmith,Pink Floyd,Manhattans,Maze featuring Frankie Beverly(must have),Jacksons,Heatwave,O'Jays,Billy Paul,Bee Gees,Commodores,Common,Tribe Called Quest,James Ingram,Prince,De La Soul,Kem,Van Hunt,Brian McKnight,Anthony Hamilton and Hootie & the Blow Fish.

1 out of 5 stars NELLY IS POSSIBLY THE WORST RAPPER EVER.......2006-06-25

i cannot believe this rubbish has gone platinum, what is this?, nelly has to be possibly the worst rapper ever to pick up a mic, in fact, calling him a rapper is an insult to rap, hes a pop artist, he has no flow, no good lyrics, he does not rap about anything meaningful or deep,he is ruining rap and making it seem like a joke, which is quickly what its becoming, nelly, along with ja rule, chingy, 50 cent, the game and all the other terrible rappers, should be banned from rapping, i cant believe nelly had the nerve to diss KRS-one, who killed him on a diss, and if krs-one was more famous, and more people heard the diss, it would have ended nellys career, like mf doom said

"Viktor the director flip a script like Rob Reiner, the way a lot of dudes rhyme their name should be knob-shiner"
