Smoke'N Roll [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
One of the most talked about and anticipated artists coming out of the West Coast hip-hop scene, Max Julian comes fresh out of the Luniz camp, having been featured on a number of recent high-profile albums. On his debut solo album, produced by the legendary Lonnie Simmons and Maestro Maine, Maxs unique sound has been said by at least one Cali DJ to have "the flavor of a Tupac record."

repeat.......2007-07-06
I thought this CD was a repeat of the Lovehammers first CD. Marty DID take advice from INXS and stopped screaming so much but some of the remakes just didn't sound as good as the originals. The CD is good but if you purchased the first Love Hammers CD the only song really missing from it is "Trees." I look forward to some new material.
A good rock album, but not a great one........2006-09-08
I'm sure the Hammerheads will slam me for this review, but that's okay. I've given this album a long time to grow on me, but I haven't changed much of my initial impression of it, so my opinion stands.
Like many others, I first "discovered" Marty Casey thanks to his memorable appearance as a contestant on "RockStar: INXS" in the summer of 2005. I was immediately captivated by his incredible stage presence, his intensity, and his voice. Enthusiastically, I sought out his two previous albums with The Lovehammers, "L'Strange" and this one, "Murder on My Mind". While my love for Marty did not diminish, I have to admit that I was not as overwhelmed by these albums as I'd hoped to be.
My first problem is with the vocals. Perhaps it is just the mix, here. Perhaps it is an over-use of ProTools to smooth out the edges, but it feels at times that Marty's voice on this album is barely recognizable as the same Marty Casey we heard on TV. Much of the "edge" that I loved about his voice on the show seems to be missing, and that is a major downfall of the album for me.
The songs themselves start out strong, with the best two--lyrically and musically--kicking things off: "Tunnel" and "Eyes Can't See". After that, however, things begin to settle into a sameness of sound lacking strong hooks and originality. The impression I am left with is one of a strong "local" band, yes, but one that lacked that certain special something to propel them to more national acclaim. Perhaps that is why Marty sought out a fresh start on RockStar? It does leave one to wonder.
There are a couple other solid tracks, particularly the atmospheric "Clouds" and the punky "Call of Distress", but again, nothing that packs the instant catchiness of "Trees" as we heard on Rock Star. Perhaps Marty and the Lovehammers are a band that simply needs better production to be captured properly on disc?
I do look forward to hearing their next release, to see if they can break away from some of the more generic hard-rock aspects of their sound into something more fresh and original. I have no doubt that Marty Casey has the talent and skill to do this. I'm just still waiting to hear it all truly come together.
Raw Emotion & Energy!.......2006-08-12
What is it with major labels? They always suck all the life, energy and emotion out of a recording. They try and make it palatable for a wide audience. That's a mistake because when you try and please everyone, you end up pleasing no one. That's what happened with Marty Casey and Lovehammers major label release. It's a great album because of the musical content, but it's just just missing all the live, raw energy that this band is capable of. With the production of the songs on the Marty Casey and Lovehammers cd, I can completely see why people might want to compare them to bands like Nickelback. It's the production of the songs that make it sound like Nickelback, not the music.
Anyway..
Murder On My Mind is a stellar cd! I'd have to say that it's in my top 5 of all time and just kills the Marty Casey and Lovehammers' cd. If you listen to Call Of Distress on both cd's, it's perfectly obvious. The version of Call Of Distress on this cd makes me weep every time I listen to it, but the version on Marty Casey and Lovehammers leaves me cold. I completely blame that on the producer and sound engineer, who ultimately work for the label.
Bottom line.. If I could only buy one cd, I'd buy this one in a heartbeat. Too bad that this isn't their major label debut.
Hopefully, the Lovehammers will get a clue and go back to a more live, raw sound like on this cd when record their next cd.

Great!!!! It is Marty Casey & Lovehammers before Rockstar INXS. This is what they do best. I liked hearing them before they hit it big. You can really tell they poured their heart into this.
Breathe of fresh Air that rocks big time.......2006-04-23
This band is so intense and so together that their enegry almost blows out my ipod!
Buy this CD now! It is so refreshing to hear great rock again in a music world of lame pop, constant rap and lame.

Backs against the wall . . . .......2005-06-22
As mosh-pit success loomed ever closer for dnc, Island Records pushed them into this riff-heavy follow up to regional smash "Fly Me Courageous." The resulting affair continues the trend toward AC/DC-style brain-pounding rock that had begun with "Malfunction Junction" on the "Mystery Road" album. While the band owes debts to the Stooges, the MC5, the Dictators, other heavy bands from the 70s, much of "Smoke" veers too close to the spandex sounds of the 1980s. Tracks such as "She Doesn't Wanna Go" and "1000 Swings" sell the band short of their nouveau-Crazy Horse potential. Only half of the songs, including "Turn it Up or Turn it Off," "What's the Difference," or "Eastern European Carny Man" does the Georgia quartet remind us what kind of band they had been. The album failed to "break" dnc to a nationwide audience, but it did "break" them with Island and with guitarist Buren Fowler. When dnc returned after "Smoke," they steered as far away from the hard rock excesses as possible. For an interesting comparison, listen to frontman Kevn Kinney's 1994 solo album "Down Out Law," which showcases a number of songs squeezed from "Smoke" to make room for more head-banging.
Very Underrated DNC Album.......2005-06-10
I recently purchased this cd through the Amazon marketplace for only a few bucks. It was well worth it. Granted, this album may take a few listens to appreciate, but it is well worth the patience. It is harder rockin' than "Fly Me Courageous". My favorite tracks are "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off", (which I think has some poignant lyrics despite its hard rockin melodies),"Eastern European Carny Man","Whiskey Soul Woman" and the quirky "Patron Lady Beautiful". Definitely worth it if you can get it cheap like I did.
Good Stuff.......2004-08-19
This is probably my second favorite D&C album. MYSTERY ROAD is my favorite. If you like heavy guitar riffs, than this album is for you. To me the best tracks are "Back Against The Wall", "Patron Lady Beautiful", "She Doesn't Wanna Go", and "Whiskey Soul Woman". The songwriting may not be the best, but, the guitars really rocks!. So if you like the hard-rocking version of D&C check this album out.
Definitely have a Smoke!.......2002-12-12
Coming off the success of 1990's metallic Fly Me Courageous, which included two FM and MTV hits, Drivin' 'n' Cryin' returned in 1993 with Smoke, another collection of heavy, riff-oriented songs. Although both records were produced and engineered by Geoff Workman, Smoke had a less-polished, raw feel that should have fit right in to the new post-grunge world. But, as they'd done on many prior albums, they (or the label) made a horrible choice for the first single, the uninspired "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off," and the album never took off.
Which is a shame. While not as lyrically strong as prior albums, Smoke still contains some great songs; meaty riffs on insanely heavy opener "Back Against The Wall," the driving title track, the soulful "Whiskey Soul Woman" and Zep-homage "All Around The World."
And while the album is pretty heavy as a whole, fans of the band's lighter (crying) side will find some nice stuff here as well: the haunting dirge "When You Come Back," the wistful feedback of "What's The Difference?" and the slowly building Civil War epic "Patron Lady Beautiful."
Lead singer and songwriter Kevn Kinney has dismissed Smoke as too riff happy, and says he wrote the words to fit the riffs instead of the other way around, but it's still a classic album from one of rock's most underrated bands. Light it up.
"Smoke" Doesn't Catch Fire.......2002-07-15
Quirky southern rockers Drivin'N'Cryin' followed up their best album, 1991's masterpiece "Fly Me Courageous," with the album that is easily their worst. Whereas "Courageous" is loaded with top notch songwriting and killer hooks, "Smoke" is marred by a decided absence of the same. Even when it starts to take off, like on the intermittentaly powerful "Patron Lady Beautiful," or the beautifully accoustic "What's the Difference," inappropriate sonic intrusions mar the groove. It's as if the band deliberately sabotaged their strengths in an effort to avoid merely repeating their past success. The second half is considerably better than the first, and the best song on the disc is rocking "Whiskey Soul Woman."
Overall, a failed effort that marked the beginning of DNC's unfortunate fade into obscurity. At their best, they were a force to be reckoned with.

Album Description
Smoke Ring Haloes includes jazz-tinged ballads, an uptempo rocker or two, a country-ish tribute to musical cowboys (with a great-sounding pedal steel guitar) and touches of the blues. Although this diversity might make it hard to pigeonhole, this is an accomplished debut by Seattle-based singer/songwriter Steve Wacker.
Wacker plays almost all the instruments, and he clearly enjoys having fun with the language (although some puns are more obvious than others). The songs are primarily based on acoustic guitar, and the arrangements are fleshed out with bass, percussion, harmonica and various electronic keyboards.
Highlights include Cowboy Song (featuring Bob Knetzger's sweet pedal steel), a soulful cover of Bonnie Koloc's Children's Blues, and a duet with MJ Bishop (this girl can really wail!) on Love So Elusive, a funky-sounding shuffle. Scrambled is a fun commentary on that morning-after frame of mind, and Wacker somehow extends it into a comment about day-to-day existence. He also paints some vivid images in More Than Meets the Eye and Seattle, both of which achieve a jazz-like feeling through progressions based on major seventh chords.
Nice production, well-written songs, good arrangements and solid vocals by a truly American songwriter. Buy this disc--you won't be disappointed.

This Album is Incredible!.......2006-02-17
This album rocks. It is such a great combination of raw sausage; slower, smoother tracks; and everything in between that I can't stop loving it! I guarentee you won't be disappointed with this album.....I haven't taken it out of the CD player in my car for months! The songs have great, powerful lyrics that are expertly written by the leader Cosmos, who is a true poet. Check out especially "Ghetto Mind" and "WITTR." The last track on the album, "Farewell," is an unexpected gem, the way it contrasts with the faster songs on the album. It is intensely beautiful and not to be missed. Great job, too, with covering a song by a very influential group (Black Sabbath, "Electric Funeral") and not only making it sound amazing, but also with making it their own.
Great Album, trust me, you will love it.....

Awesome CD, awesome Band, awesome Singer!! This is the band to watch out for in 2006 and beyond. Marty Casey is smoking hot!
AWESOME!!.......2005-12-22
Awesome indie album!! Something for everyone: ranges from acoustic "Sleeper" to sizzling "Summer in the City" to hard-driving, head-banging "Real Man". The Lovehammers write great rock music with hooks that keep the songs looping over and over again in your mind. Not to be missed!
LOVE.LOVE.LOVE This CD!!.......2005-12-08
As a fan of Marty Casey (from Rockstar:INXS), I originally purchased the Lovehammers CD, Murder on My Mind. I totally enjoyed it. I had to search a bit harder to find this one. My first impression was slight disappointment, as it is much slower, less "hard rock" than MOMM. However, after listening to it a few more times, I like L'Strange so much better than MOMM! I listen to this over and over in my car and I never tire of it. Bulletholes and Never Forget are definitely my favorite songs but the whole CD is great. I highly recommend this!!
