Hindemith was the greatest German composer of the post-War period, and the last in that great line that began with Bach and extended through the Classical and Romantic periods. His orchestral music is varied and generally extremely approachable, and the percentage of major works is very high. Nobilissima visione, Symphonic Metamorphoses, Mathis der Maler, Symphony in E-flat, and Concert Music for Strings and Brass are all popular masterpieces, while works such as the Symphonic Dances, Symphonia Serena, and Harmony of the World Symphony deserve the same accolades. This set, excellently performed and recorded by a selection of fine Australian orchestras, really deserves the widest circulation among fans of listenable contemporary classical music. --David Hurwitz

Great performances of a great composer.......2006-08-23

While Hindemith will never be known for changing the way the world hears music, he will always be recognized as composing well-crafted minor masterpieces, even if they can be a little formulaic and his sense of melody was a little warped. All six discs in this set have gems that should be heard more often in the concert halls and recorded more. In particular, the Concerto for Orchestra on Disc 6 is fantastic -- with its addictive and fun themes and transparent structure, it was the only work I listened to for about a month. Of the rarer works recorded here, his Symphony Serena on Disc 5 is a little tougher to like, but is really quite good, while his Symphony in E flat on Disc 4 is nothing short of amazing. The Philharmonic Concerto, a set of variations on a strange but catchy theme that only Hindemith could write, also really shines in this set.

Of his more well known -- if you can call any Hindemith "well known" -- works, the recordings are a mixed bag. His Concert Music for Strings and Brass on Disc 3 have a wonderful fullness in the lower brass that I haven't heard in other performances. But the Mathis der Maler Symphony and Nobilissima Visione are both so-so and a little dull. And the performance of Symphonic Metamorphosis here is just outright terrible and a big disappointment, full of mistakes and uneven tempos.

But that's ok. Because you can get good recordings of his better-known works elsewhere. But because his lesser works are presented here in such convincing performances, this set is a must buy for anyone exploring Hindemith! The other 2 box sets on CPO that round out his complete orchestral works are just as good, if not even better. All are highly recommended.

Wow, this box set is phenomenal. First off, HIndemith is one of the most underappreciated and underrated composers of the 20th century. In my opinion he is definetly in the top 5 along with Stravinsky, Schoenberg, etc. This box set is simply amazing. Whether it is the sound quality, or the works themselves, they will provide you with hours and hours of great music. Although Hindemith was a 20th century composer, his works are EXTREMELY ACCESSIBLE and have a chromatic-romantic feeling to them. I am a music teacher and I have a huge classical collection and this box set is played more than most else. Also, I would recommend the other two volumes by CPO, they are just as good as this set.

I listened upstairs in bed, on the couch watching football with the sound off, while typing my uncle William E. Crawford's WWII journals. It doesn't get any better than Paul Hindemith, whether it is band music, symphony, ragtime, or overture.
I confess I sometimes have a love-hate feeling about the role of the Jewish Diaspora musicians and composers. But they do the time to the beat and more. I always go to them for performance. They should teach other Americans to compose and perform.

AMAZING
i did not purchase this from amazon, but rather on a recent trip to new york city, to see the new york philharmonic, after which i got
inspired to be better and then saw this cd, and bought it.
Wow, this is worth every cent! hearing how it "should" sound is immensely helpfull, and the advice with each track is outstanding.
A must-have for anyone considering a serious career in tuba!

Mr. Pokorny has created a superior CD of orchestral tuba parts. His spoken comments are insightful and his playing is top notch. As a prospective orchestral tuba player, I have found this CD extremely helpful in my preparation for orchestral auditions. This is a must for the serious tuba player!!!

Though he may not be a piano superstar, Bruce Brubaker is clearly a musician to watch. On this recording of solo piano works by Philip Glass and John Cage, Brubaker somehow shifts between these two very different modernist composers to create a seamless disc of mesmerizing keyboard music. While Glass's own playing is often precise and austere, Brubaker is a different beast altogether. With him, we get a hint of Impressionism and a sense of contemplation with each note. The five parts of Metamorphosis are given shades of melancholy, along with frenzy; on the expansive "Mad Rush," Brubaker goes wild where he has to, but always returns to the piece's calming, sweet center. The piano music of John Cage is limited to just two cuts--"A Room" and "Dream"--but they, too, are hauntingly beautiful (especially the latter, longer piece). For anyone who has grown tired of Philip Glass's recent electronic keyboard forays or the ubiquitous prepared-piano CDs of John Cage, Glass Cage will sound like a fresh and sublime homecoming to two musical mavericks. glass at his most subtle.......2005-01-21

Brubaker really understands and enjoys the music he's working with here. His playing is cerebral, thoughtful yet emotional. One gets the sense that this selection reflects his personal taste. The Metamorphoses also appear on Glass's "Solo Piano" album, played by the composer himself. There they are mesmerising, but formal, structural, harsh. Brubaker lets the pieces breathe, finding individual character in each one of the five.

"Mad Rush" has a suitable wash of sound feeling, but the real standout is the "Satyagraha" excerpt. This long, unadorned piece has a beautiful, solid rythmic line that builds logically, linking each evolving section. It gives a kind of slow, ritual or martial feel to the act.

The Cage pieces are more challengingly unmelodic; I honestly seldom listen to them (though I do love some Cage music). The attraction of this cd is to hear Glass anew through a sensitive interpreter.

(Warning: the sound is not mixed for a rock audience, like many Glass cds. I find I need to turn up the volume on my system whenever I put this on, but there's little distortion).

This is one of most intensely beautiful performances of Philip Glass's work I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot). It's unbelievable to me that this recording isn't better known.

Captivating Performance by Tremendous Pianist.......2001-08-29

I was immensely lucky to have had Mr. Brubaker's intro to music class at the City University of New York in the mid 90s. He is an outstanding performer, and this disc will not disappoint (even if you are not a great fan of Cage's music). Highly recommended. Nice going, Bruce!

Recommended - with one caveat.......2000-10-19

This is a very rewarding disc. The Glass/Cage compilation shares the same kind of mesmerizing, meditative continuity as I find on the ECM discs of Arvo Part. I had not been familiar with Bruce Brubaker before this performance. By all accounts, he acquits himself well. I do not own the Glass piano pieces by the composer, so I cannot compare the performances. However, Brubaker held my attention completely for the full 63 minutes. The Arabesque label has produced many fine, adventuresome discs in the past and this adds to the list. Here's hoping they continue programming music that's off the beaten path.

My only caveat with this effort has to do with the recording. It seems, to my ears, rather closely miked. The first track jolted me a bit - if felt as if we were right on top of the piano. While your ears eventually adjust, I would have preferred a more distant perspective. I think this kind of minimalist music can benefit from a more distant recording perspecitve as it can add to the meditative quality. On the positive side, the recording is quite clean and crisp. Overall, I think listeners who are attracted to Cage, Glass, or Part will like what they hear.

I disliked Glass' piano music. The Solo Piano CD was dull, boring, unimaginative. Glass was hammering on the piano instead of playing (hey - this is a piano, not a Farfisa). This wonderful CD changes it all: Brubaker plays the Glass pieces with emotion & tenderness without loosing the accuracy of the pieces or running amok with wild interpretations (as was the case of the Italian pianist whose name skipped my mind. Arthuro something). Any Glass fan - buy this CD, close the lights, pour yourself a semi-strong drink, sit back and relax, hit play on the remote. The Cage pieces are nice (I have no acquaintance with other performances, so I can't really say anything else). Great job Brubaker - any plans for conducting?

Early CD by the great dean of American bell ringing.......1999-02-25

This is the earliest CD recorded by Don Allured directing the Westminster Concert Bell Choir; it consists of a number of original works, such as "Bandelier," "Bellfest," and "Rondo Passacaglia," in addition to well-known arrangements by the finest arrangers. Pay special attention to the interesting "Metamorphosis," which centers around a whole-tone scale. Westminster played on what was then the widest range of handbells in existence: 7 full octaves. Don Allured is a pioneer for the musical possibilities of handbells and has influenced musicians across the world. As an early CD, it suffers from poor recording technology and sonic reproduction, but its historical value and treatment of inventive repertoire is worth the investment.
