Lyrically Memphis'Aqua Blaq could go toe to toe with the likes of Ludacris,Jay-Z,Talib Kweli,Eminem...really.This project is refreshingly innovative.On one cut titled "Gutter" Blaq spits a hardcore street sermon from his ghetto pulpit while the beat has you swingin and sayin "dam right" all at once."Shake It" is steadily becoming a gentlemen's club favorite in the south.I love "crunk" music,however dont think this is just your run of the mill "down south crunk album".The soulful groove and Bobby Womackish lyrics of "Dirty Dirty" take you back to the Memphis of the 60's & 70's.Just imagine it's 1972 and you see Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch,Curtis Mayfeild,Al Green and Aretha Franklin turn the corner in a 72' Seville with spinners and 24's.The infectious synthline and hook on "Bounce" will have you doin'just that.You may wonder what made me pick this CD out of a music store rap section infiltrated with played out cover art and warmed over gargage,especially since Aqua Blaq is relativly unknown? Well, one thing I notice and look for is song titles.Blaq has a cut called "5 Mics".I saw this and thought"Is this brother Serious?" Trust me he's SERIOUS.Once the people get to hear this brotha cats better step their game up or Aqua Blaq is gonna Reign for a while.
